・┆✦SIDUS — a what if fanfic about dcmk.
There’s a world out there, where there’s thieves and witches and detectives. Only thing is, they aren’t the ones you think who play as such.
Consider this: instead of Kuroba Kaito walking through the hidden door in his bedroom to the basement eight years after Kuroba Toichi's death, it is Nakamori Aoko who does.
Aoko, who was only trying to find Kaito because he left his bag again (the idiot), headed inside the house and placed the bag on his bed. She was about to leave, when her attention was caught by the huge poster Kaito's father on his room. She touches it, and she falls. She is scared at first, but thinks maybe it is one of Kaito's pranks, and yells some threats.
When the chair keeps her locked in, she realizes it is not a prank. And the record plays, and the costume of Kaitou Kid pops up. And she's scared again.
Was Kaito the thief? No, impossible. His father then?
She couldn't possibly tell Kaito, or her father, or anyone for that matter.
So she steals borrows the costume, and it was her who stands on the rooftop of the building. Her who finds out about Ryonosuke Jii, her who finds out that Kaito's father was killed. Murdered. It wasn't an accident.
So she learns, and she tries, to fulfill the role of Kaitou Kid. To try and find out who killed her best friend's father.
(She thinks it's fun that her father finally, finally gives his full attention to her. And she makes fun of Kaito, for she tells him that Kid, is, of course, "superior than you in every way!" Kaito does not like it at all.)
When a detective—a very pretty high school detective, one might add—steps in their school, Aoko is alert
Koizumi Akako enters breezily and when she introduced herself, she seemed almost flaunting. Being beautiful, most of the boys are already on her feet. But she cares not for them, because it is the truth she needs. But one look is all it took for Aoko to realize that Kaito, though not engrossed with her like the rest of the class, is intrigued.
So when Akako challenges Kaitou Kid, Kid responds. Challenge accepted.
Kaito tries to chase after her, or at least, Kid. He tries hard to capture Kid, tries to upstage the thief with his tricks, and despite the fact that it is Kaito with more skill, it is still Aoko with the odd, fascinating, useful gadgets.
She loves having fun with Akako too. She’s really pretty, and their ‘game’ really exercises her for other heists.
And then, in the Western part of Japan, there is a girl called Toyama Kazuha. She is called the Great Detective of the West, another of the 'Great High School Detectives.'
When Kazuha tries to look for her rival, instead of finding a shrunken Kudo Shinichi, she finds a shrunken Mouri Ran, who had changed her name to Hashioka Risa. Mouri Ran, the Great Detective of the East.
Because that night, in Paradise Island, it wasn't Kudo Shinichi who followed the two men who wore black. It was Ran. It was Ran who was unfortunately hit on the back of her head. It was Ran who was given the drug supposed to kill.
And instead of the Professor, she ran all the way back home, where Mouri Kogoro is unsure of what to do (His child had just been turned back to a brat). Still, he nods and takes care of her because this is his daughter. And when Shinichi comes in looking for Ran, both father and daughter decided to keep the secret to themselves. Telling Shinichi that "something came up in a sudden, and Ran had to leave." (Or at least, mini-Ran does, Kogoro is more on the verge of kicking Shinichi out his house, really.)
It is Hashioka Risa who solves the cases with her father and the police, and it is she who becomes the member of Shounen Tantei-dan along with her first grade classmates. (Kogoro is actually happy with this, he gets to spend time with his little girl once again. Just... a very nagging little girl.)
Later, it would be Risa who solves Hirota Masami's robbery case. It is Hashioka Risa, who wears Kisaki Eri's old glasses and ties her hair in a ponytail that befriends Miyano Shiho—Haibara Ai.
It is Hashioka Risa and Haibara Ai who eventually defeats the Black Organization hand in hand as partners sisters.
(In this world, it is Kuroba Kaito who tries his hardest to capture Kaito Kid, Hakuba Saguru charms the ladies rather quickly with his witchly powers, Hattori Heiji gives charms to his loved ones, and Kudo Shinichi waits for someone's return.)

Shinichi's Perfect Rival?
spoilers for Chapters 350-354 (Episodes 266-268), and very minor spoilers for Chapters 981-983 (Episodes 885-886) and 1039-1042 (Episodes 1024-1025)
There are many potential rivals to Kudo Shinichi in the Detective Conan universe. First, there's Hattori Heiji, the "Great Detective of the West" to Kudo's "Great Detective of the East". There's Kaito KID, who's the modern-day Lupin to Kudo's modern-day Holmes. But of all of the characters, there is one person who would be an even better rival than Heiji or KID. Someone who mirrors Shinichi as a detective, while also being morally at odds with him. That someone... is Ooka Momiji. Yes, the rich girl from Kyoto. Let me explain.
Okay, let’s start with the first piece of the puzzle: Momiji’s detective skills. In one case, she is implied to have come to the right conclusion before Shinichi, Heiji, and Rei while not even being in the same city as them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neither Shinichi or Heiji has shown much ability to solve cases without being present at the crime scene itself. The best comparison I could make to Momiji's feat would be the time when Kudo Yusaku was reading the newspaper on a murder and figured out the solution to a case.
Tumblr media
This isn't the only time when Momiji demonstrates her detective prowess, though. It's just the most clear. Another time, she gives a hint in the middle of a sentence which gives Heiji and Shinichi the needed information to solve the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the case where the code is solved by 'adding' and 'subtracting' different parts. Now, this leaves a lot up to interpretation, and I definitely didn't see this scene as Momiji being a really good detective when I first watched it, but if you really think about it, there was no reason for her to say "add" and "subtract". She could have just as easily said "The restaurant should make the food cheaper since the lines are so long." Which, now that I'm thinking about it, makes zero sense since that would only increase demand and make the lines even longer. So, my guess is that she was looking for a time to smoothly give the "add" and "subtract" hint, and found the perfect opportunity to say it.
(She did act surprised when they came up with the answer, but I'm just pegging that up to excellent acting. Wait, is she both of Shinichi's parents at the same time?)
Now, if Momiji solved the code before even talking to Heiji and Shinichi, that leaves a big plot hole. Specifically, why doesn't she just... go to the area herself (where she knew the guy was supposed to be) and potentially stop a murder from happening?
Well, the answer is actually very simple. Momiji is a brat who cares more about marrying Heiji than the life of an innocent person.
In the cases she appeared in she showed little to no interest in solving the case, instead usually pursuing Heiji. Even in the Cafe Poirot case, her motive is purely to 'help Heiji'. Despite being brilliant at it, she just does detective work whenever she feels like it. Also kinda like Yusaku, now that I think of it.
Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked. Let’s talk about Shinichi’s beliefs. Shinichi, unlike Momiji, actively pursues justice, that being the main reason he fights against the Black Organization for the same reasons. His moral compass even guides him to save the lives of people who attempt to kill others, just because he sees that the life of a person - any person - matters, even going out to say:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, you have a detective who pursues justice and values his moral compass, and a detective who completely acts in her own self-interest. Seems like a perfect basis for a potent rivalry.
Now, why does it have to be Momiji? Why not his father, Yusaku, since he holds a lot of similar traits and has a closer connection with Shinichi already? Well, Yusaku is Shinichi’s superior, and Momiji is his peer. Shinichi might begrudgingly accept the fact that Yusaku is better than him and doesn't pursue the truth, but he most certainly would not accept Momiji being either of those things. And Momiji, who expects respect from others, would react very poorly to this.
If Momiji learns about Shinichi’s secret identity as Conan, she might blackmail him to be supportive of her advances on Heiji or something, causing him to hate her even more. As is, Shinichi would be poised to see her as a disdainful rival, but might try to blackmail her back to have her help him hide his identity.
However, putting Momiji at odds with Shinichi would do more than create tension against each other. It could easily give Momiji some more character dynamics. Currently, her only real dynamic is the love triangle with Heiji and Kazuha, but if she was rivals with Shinichi she would be able to have more interesting relationships with Shinichi, Ran (if she sees the rivalry happening), maybe even Heiji and Iori. And character dynamics lead to character growth. Spending more time with Shinichi could let her mature and become less selfish and spoiled.
For Shinichi, he gets a rival that is also a detective, but also ideologically opposes him for more than five seconds (Heiji, I love you, but you moved away from rivals to friends with Shinichi... very quickly.) And this conflict with Momiji can make Shinichi rise to become a better detective, and could give him a new ally that could help with the takedown of the Black Organization.
Who knows, maybe they develop into friends after a long time. Maybe they never develop a respect for each other. Either way, I believe that Momiji would be the perfect rival for Shinichi: they are both very skilled detectives (and if I had to give one an edge I'd give it to Momiji), but they have different priorities and goals which cause them to butt heads.
So... I hope you enjoyed reading this essay as much as I enjoyed writing it, and have an amazing rest of your day.

"I can't say I'm surprised. After all, who'd suspect that the great Detective of the East was a murderer himself?"
- Kudo Shinichi, from Innocent Murderer (written by Distorted Domain)
-------
I am back once again with the Evil Shinichi/Conan AU shit, thanks to this post and the Detective Conan fanfic I mentioned above.
As you can see, based on his clothes, you could assume it was Makoto Okuda, it's because I was inspired on the episode "Kudo Shinichi, Murderer". Just imagine if that was really Kudo Shinichi who kills people on hindsight and make them look like a suicide, while solving cases as the famous Detective of the East.
I mean... psychopath!Shinichi is an interesting concept, since psychopaths can also be very charming (even if only superficially) and they have the ability to confidently take risks, be ruthless, goal-oriented and make bold decisions. They also react far less intensely in such fear-evoking situations. If anything, they remain calm.
Shinichi already has the intelligence, is reckless and has the charm to manipulate other people, since he can fool everyone as Conan with his cutesy voice and his jab on the target's weaknesses (he had manipulated Kogoro to let him come to crime scenes many times because of Kogoro's tendency to boast). In fact, he was always calm and collected in crime scenes, and sometimes show no emotion over the matter (although he sometimes feel bad about the people involved in the case, but he has to feel calm to solve them).
But in this dark Detective Conan AU, what if he had developed the urge to murder people when he was a little child, back when Yusaku first brought him to crime scenes?
--------
I got another idea for this concept all thanks to:
This post about Shinichi and how he was depicted as comedic evil and ladykiller by some even though he's technically a Holmes nerd: https://alitheakorogane.tumblr.com/post/674363351938285568/detectivegeekshin-yesyunniechan-serinoxtv-i

I apologize for the terrible blood splatter in the fanart, I sucked on drawing bloody and gory ones. My imagination was sprouting ideas, but my art skills says no.😂🤣

DCMK Recs: Conan is Shinichi reveals
SHOCKING- the KID Killer's true identity revealed! by glowingGalaxies
Words: 27,921
Sure, it’s not her 7-year-old and 17-year-old faces appearing side by side in the report, with the headline “Great Detective of the East is the KID Killer??” but that doesn’t really change the fact that they are both absolutely and irrevocably fucked right now. Even if they somehow manage to debunk this story, there is no way the Organization is going to forget, or literally anyone around them. He’s probably not even going to survive the rest of the day.
Moriarty didn’t realize Holmes was going to be his downfall and announce it to all of London.
The morning news report immediately leaves Shinichi with several problems, some of the top ones being: 1) His cover is blown, 2) Ran has a lot of things to say to him, 3) The media shouldn't have been able to get some of this information, and 4) Everyone that knows Conan Edogawa expects an explanation. Needless to say, it's not a great way to start the day.
Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, this ends up being the start of basically everything in his life changing for the better.
One of my favorite reveal fics. Things are explained, relationships aren’t ruined, and there’s a happy ending at the end of all the panicking.
Family of the heart by Agirlcandream100
Words: 6,759
One look was all it took.
There was no logic or reason behind his realisation, just a pure sense of instinct.
That was his son.
The boy wore a look of protective determination and clutched a thick volume of Sherlock Holmes in his arms. He appeared to be in deep conversation with Ran, but still sent a fierce look at anyone who tried to approach them.
Kogoro felt like all of the air had been sucked from his lungs and he was left reeling in the enormity of the moment.
It felt as valuable to him as the first time that he had cradled his daughter in his arms.
Mouri Kogoro has a daughter. He also has a Soul Son, Kudo Shinichi. No matter what life throws at them Kogoro vows to protect and care for his son as much as possible.
Heartwarming. Shinichi/Conan is part of the Mouri family and deserves to be recognized as such. Hurt/comfort. Good for a bad day.
The unsolved mystery of Edogawa Conan by Idis_of_Rohan
Words: 1,897
Edogawa Conan was a mystery, more so the further you inspected him. Wataru had gotten a better look than most. Now Conan was gone, supposedly moved back abroad, and seemingly impossible to get a hold of. Wataru hadn't gotten his answers and it seemed like he never would.
An unexpected visitor changes everything.
Really illustrates how Takagi views Conan. Shinichi deserves to keep the relationships he’s built up as Conan.
The Confidant by MeridianGrimm
Words: 4,351
Hakuba Saguru overhears something strange from the small, bespectacled detective and decides to investigate.
Good for anyone who prefers the characters piecing things together on their own. Includes a dash of Kid shenanigans.
The Replacement by Phantoms_Echo
Words: 11,924
A familiar hang glider caught his eyes instead. His shoulders slumped as he watched it grow smaller and smaller, disappearing into the night.
With it, his last respite vanished before his eyes.
“Conan?” Ran called from the stairs, “What are you doing?”
“Nothing,” Conan’s voice cracked around the quiet word. He swallowed thickly around the lump in his throat and tried again, “Nothing.”
Angst-filled. Made me cry the first time I read it. Very cathartic with a wonderful resolution. Comforting for when you feel empty or exhausted emotionally. KaiShin but can be read platonically if you prefer to interpret it that way.

hex, my beloved, would you share your thoughts on the diplomat murder case with the class
Weeeelllll... if you insist, anon :3
Hex Goes Off(TM) again below the break, surpriiisssee
As it turns out, The Diplomat Murder Case is responsible for a lot of my current HCs about Shinichi/Conan. It's my favorite of the transformation arcs, it's the very first one-- and thus the hardest-hitting, at least when you get to experience it blind-- and also our introduction to transience as a theme, though admittedly I'm probably a bit biased here... Babby Hex has fond memories of sneaking out of bed to watch this one when it still had a slot on the early morning block, so I often come back to these two episodes wearing nostalgia glasses.
Branching off that, I should probably start by saying that for episodes 1-123, I am almost exclusively familiar with the Funimation dub only, which... as the fanbase knows... has its fair share of strange and silly localization choices. I personally find much of it charming and it has no effect on the story or its appeal for me... except when it does (more on that later).
So despite having lost track of how many times I've rewatched this case, my thoughts on it are actually quite scattered - it's the starting place for a lot of the DCMK ideas I currently subscribe to, but those ideas gained their traction in other places (cough, The Desperate Revival, cough), so I apologize beforehand if these aren't bookended well and also idk how to lead into them so IT'S LIST TIME
1) Vices and Expectations
At the time, the idea of Shinichi returning to normal-- let alone temporarily-- was likely one only being entertained by the audience as the setup for (if not the result of) the grand finale. I remember it surprising me, and it's a hell of a move to put forth such a scenario in the first place, only to take it back. Shinichi himself believes the transformation is permanent until it becomes... horribly apparent that it isn't. It's a nasty surprise for everyone, the nastiest of them all (being the very first in a long line of GOT 'EMs), and I think that as a result this is arguably the most powerless he's ever been in his own body, at least for a while. The depiction of the pain he endures is frightening (something I feel is lost in later transformations): freezing on the surface, but burning beneath the skin... like bones made of magma as they die within the flesh-- his heart beating out of his own chest, faster and faster, harder and harder as if to escape its own agony-- the world blurs, nausea takes hold, balance wavering-- 'This is no longer your fortress,' he hears it whisper in his ear... TBH how he can even think coherently at this stage is lost on me. It's shown to be a debilitating process of physical self-destruction and I don't believe for a second someone could acclimate to it, even after repeated transformations which is lowkey why it bothers me a bit that these feel less weighty as time goes on. Control is Shinichi's domain, and the uncertainty which plagues him as he painfully returns to Conan is a peek behind the curtain, a glimpse of the mortality he-- for all his bravado and cool, calm exterior-- is still very capable of realizing.
Although not nearly as dramatic as the next transformation, I personally find this to be a cruel little hint towards Shinichi's vices. Up til now we have not had many (any?) opportunities to explore what really-- and I mean really-- makes him tick. The recklessness he falls prey to when he thinks his old life is within reach again (see: literally every time he's tempted by The Antidote) is teased here-- not overtly, mind, but this first experience with temporary normalcy introduces the idea of hope to Shinichi's world, and the expectation that he can come back to it, actually, is suddenly set. Even if for a brief moment, we see the hands which have wound his potential to self-destruct...
2) Othering
I mentioned in a previous tirade post that the Funimation dub adds some interesting dialogue which is absent from the JP version:
"... From my own mouth, not his!"
...But is substantiated by dialogue which is present in the original:
"Am I turning back into that kid again?!"
"...With my real mouth... and my real voice..."
I find it so, so intriguing that this early on, it's already implied that Shinichi thinks of Conan as an entity separate from himself, despite that obviously not being the case and especially considering that-- here, at episode 49/50-- Conan hasn't really been present for long enough to establish himself as Conan (Ran sleuthing out his Real Identity is still a very real threat at this point, after all). Shinichi rarely mentions Conan by name throughout the case, in all other instances referring to him as something else-- "that kid with the glasses--" and... idk, to me that indicates shame, or fear, or resentment, and just reeks of plain animosity. I know for the sake of appearances he needed to Other Conan in front of Ran and Heiji, but when he's alone with his thoughts... it's not necessary to actively think of Conan like something to be hated unless he really feels that way, unless he really feels vexed by this child, this thing that is both him and not.
I dunno, I just find that fascinating. That one Funimation line is single-handedly responsible for this whole entire HC in my head ahahaaa
3) Heiji, and Hope
My angst-brain is constantly honing in on Shinichi, but The Diplomat Murder Case is pretty important for introducing Heiji, too!! Kaito won't see his DC debut for another twenty or so episodes, so imo it's Heiji, debuting as a rival detective, who first introduces the idea of a possible foil for Shinichi. This... obviously doesn't pan out this way-- quite the opposite-- and the entire premise of Heiji seeking out The Great Detective of the East as his "thousandth sword" only carries a lot more weight after the parallels to Benkei and Yoshitsune are made more plain in Crossroad in the Ancient Capital. So for all intents and purposes (especially since the Funimation dialogue was changed around quite a bit), Hattori's appearance here isn't particularly outstanding in itself aside from being his first, except...
...Except Heiji also introduces the baijiu here, the catalyst for this entire arc and my subsequent observations, the vehicle through which Shinichi becomes aware that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and the knowledge of which Conan repeatedly draws upon whenever the antidote comes up. Given that Heiji eventually discovers Shinichi's secret and, in their friendship, serves as one of his lifelines to his former self (as "companionship," in my head... more on that in another post, maybe), I find it... very striking that he would be the first one to deliver him hope. Good God.
Like Kaito, I want to think about Heiji more in-depth too, but there are better episodes for it... Murderer, Shinichi Kudo
eeeEEEEE okay i'm done tysm for letting me screm anon this case has a special place in my top ten aaAAAaaaahaha

Listen... Kudo Shinichi, great detective of the East, genius beyond compare, the one who took down the Black Org, just straight up. Not realizing Koizumi Akako is a witch
Akako: I was working on a spell-- Shinichi: She’s someone who respects her privacy and makes these kinds of jokes!
Akako: So Lucifer told me-- Shinichi: Oh, is Lucifer the name of your cat? That’s so cute. Akako must be really smart but just pretending that her cat told her for the gag
Akako: My love potion-- Shinichi: I like that she acknowledges that she’s hot but like, in a funny way
[Akako flies on a broom] Shinichi: Oh, are you a magician like Kaito? I guess that explains why you’re such good friends
Akako: I’m a witch Shinichi: Good one! Love the aesthetic
Kaito: Akako’s a witch Shinichi: She’s a WHAT NOW Akako: We’ve been over this??? You’ve been to my room??? Saw my cauldron and spellbooks and everything??? Shinichi: I thought that was just your aesthetic and that you were like... studying it because you’re a well rounded, intelligent person Akako: I AM a well rounded, intelligent person, it is my aesthetic, and I am studying it because it’s my religion

I really appreciate those who read my random fanfictions so here's one for all of you
-
Kudo Shinichi is a proud man. He's composed, calcutive, and strict. Being exposed in a world of crimes and injustice through books and media ever since he was a young child, he created an image built upon his own desires. He strived to save victims and put criminals behind bars. Unlike his father who's contented with writing about amazing detectives, he wanted to be one.
And so he did, at a young age and still in highschool, he managed to rise to the top by helping the police with even the most difficult of cases. He craved mystery, like they were drugs. Something he can never live without. He isn't just Kudo Shinichi, son of the great mystery writer, Kudo Yuusaku and legendary actress Fujimine Yukiko any longer. He's Kudo Shinichi, great high school detective of the east, and saviour of the police force.
Of course, just like anyone, he has an idol and a role model to be inspired from. Who's a better encouragement than the greatest detective of all time, Conan Doyle's masterpiece of a character, Sherlock Holmes? Just like Holmes, Shinichi's someone who despise injustice and corrects it. Just like Holmes, Shinichi has a sport he's good at when violence is needed. Just like Holmes, Shinichi is a living mystery killer, who sheds light to even the darkest of enigma.
People claimed him to be 'not just like Holmes' anymore, rather, he is him. The Sherlock Holmes of the modern era.
But people who really knew this person would beg to disagree. He may have similarities with the world's most famous detective, but they're all—except for their brand of justice— taken from face value. After all, Holmes was described to be someone who's logical through and through, never letting emotions get the best of this respectable man. But Shinichi? Shinichi has feelings. Compared to his beloved fictional character, Kudo Shinichi is human.
As a human, he naturally have emotions. Emotions such as dread and anger showed when he was drugged by those men in black that unfortunate day. Feelings like panic and fear kicked in whenever he gets in contact with them. Sensing regret and self loathing every time he thinks back to what could have happen if he wasn't so careless?
He was trapped. Trapped by anxiety and paranoia that they'll come after him and those he loved if they ever found out. Trapped in a body of a 6 year old kid who's basically useless in every sense of the word. Trapped in a place where no one, not even Haibara Ai—or Miyano Shiho—can get to, despite being in the same predicament.
But he didn't give up. He couldn't. Giving up meant throwing away everything he's been living for. Letting the evil ones win while he rot and die. Whether as a detective or as a person, he can't let that happen.
So, after a year and a half of careful planning, cunning actions, and mind boggling game of hide and seek, they finally did it. It was hard, but it was worth it.
He got back to his old body and everything has gotten better and better, as they all live happily ever after.
If only it had gone that way.
Even after the final battle, he couldn't sleep. Always on his guard, tension filling his lungs, his body can't even relax. He felt like he's being watched, that Gin and Vodka would come banging at his door, waking him up from a dream. They would traget his parents and the professor, even going as far to kill everyone who made contact with him.
But of course, none of his wild imagination happened. Years went by and as the organization was left behind by those involved, he felt like he was still in the past.
He was suffocating. In the day, he had to always be careful to anyone he converse with, fearing they might be Vermouth in disguise. During the afternoon, he always had to check any unuasualness, dreading Chianti and Korn would shoot him anytime. At night, he wouldn't—couldn't— sleep a wink, ready at any moment the men in black would take away everything he has gained back.
He may be freed from the chains of their crimes, but he's still haunted by the scars so deeply imbedded in his arms he couldn't move on. They might be dead, but he's still being taunted by their malignant ghosts. The black organization was gone, but they took Kudo Shinichi with them to suffer.
But, just as he thought he had reached rock bottom, a hand would appear everytime, holding out to him. At the other side would be an angel, in the form of his most beloved wife, Mouri—now it's Kudo— Ran.
She would hug him, filling his cold world with warmth he didn't know he needed until then. She would whisper sweet things in his ears, making his trembling body stop it's nervous shaking. She would kiss him, giving him the air he'd then realized he lost. She would comfort him, using her presence alone, reminding him he's not alone. That he'll never be alone.
And everytime that would happen, he would always feel like he didn't deserve her. It wasn't a new feeling. Ran was so kind that no one deserved her. But, he was selfish, taking everything away from the woman who loved him too much.
The woman he deceived and lied to for too many times.
The woman who believed in him even when he didn't believed in his own self.
The woman who didn't give up on him even when there was no hope he can grasped on to.
The woman who's kindness got her involved and almost killed.
The woman who stayed for him, when he abandoned his own.
The woman who waited.
And the woman who he loved most in this cruel world.
He'd always whisper into her right ear with a quivering tone, burying his exhausted being in her long chestnut hair, enjoying his—yes his and only his— wife's warmth.
"I don't deserve you."
Then he would feel her smile on his shoulder, giving it a light kiss that still gave a million butterflies in his stomach.
"You're worth it Shinichi. You're always worth it."
She'd reply in that sweet voice of hers, satisfaction and gentleness so painfully clear that Shinichi was always forced to believe it.
He'd always hold her a little closer and a little tighter, confirming that she's real. That she's not dead and that he won't ever lose her.
With that, Kudo Shinichi will live another day, fighting the demons that dragged him down, knowing that an angel will always pull him up.

Red-Hearted Tragedy
For @tanteigisachi, thank you for pulling me out of my hole and back out here <3 You’re the kindest! I hope you can visualize the chirping birds and colorful butterflies and glittering rainbow that I’m presenting you this with (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚*
Fandom: Detective Conan/DCMK Pairing: Shinichi/Ran, (side Heiji/Kazuha and Kaito/Aoko) Rating: G Genre/Tags: Fluff, Domestic Warning: None
Shinichi has a theory about parenthood.
He used to think it’s not possible that once one becomes a parent, one also stops being anything else. Like the status he has right now. He was always known as a Great Detective of the East, the badass son of the famous writer Kudo Yusaku and a soccer enthusiast. Now he's barely himself, the state of parenting having sucked his body dry of anything remotely cool he had going on. Shinichi wonders if Ran feels the same. When Conan first arrived, they were extremely thrilled about finally being a family and so for a long while, Conan was pretty much everything in their minds. Ran started refusing to go to work at Teitan and Shinichi missed more cases than he can account for—all in favor of watching their baby grow healthy and in a strong household.
They succeeded. Conan is now a kind, obedient, smart and very lovely four year old and there is still nothing more important than him in his parents’ lives.
However.
It will be Valentine's Day soon and Shinichi would love for this to be their first Valentine’s Day without Conan's presence jumping and screaming for them to watch Pororo instead of opening a bottle of wine. Don't get him wrong, he loves his son. He just misses being romantic with his wife. That’s just tragic.
That's why he calls Heiji.
"Forget it," the guy says. "Kazuha and I had a hard time booking a nanny for Valentine's. She's pretty expensive and the only one who hasn’t been threatened by the twins so far."
Shinichi traps the phone between his ear and his shoulder while typing the report to finish up his latest murder case. It's the second case he’d taken this week. He's tired and grumpy and wants to end his week early to spend the whole Valentine weekend, but people seem to be exploding with their grudges, stalking ex-girlfriends here and murdering ex-husbands there.
"You should get them checked," Shinichi jokes half-hardheartedly.
The other gasps. Shinichi can practically hear Heiji’s Giant Head of Doom growing in size. "Don't insult my beautiful children!"
"You could at least ask your nanny to look after Conan as well. He's quiet, and you know he won't make any mess."
"Get your own nanny." Heiji scoffs. "Where ya’ at?"
Shinichi exhales. "Working."
"How many cases ya’ got this week?"
"Three. People really need to chill. It’s the holiday of love, not hatred. ” Shinichi answers with such exasperation and Heiji laughs. “I take it you’re just as busy as I am?”
"Nah, I got a murder and a robbery earlier this week but now I’m chillin’ and ready for the weekend." Shinichi just knows that his best friend is grinning ear to ear at this moment.
And so he decides he's had enough of him. He hangs up with a scowl, but not before sending one last grumble in Heiji’s way.
Ran places a cup of coffee in front of Shinichi, Conan's orange juice in one hand and this morning’s newspaper under her arm.
"He won't do it," Shinichi says.
Ran squints, sitting across from him at the dining table. "Kazuha-chan told me they’ve gone through a lot of trouble to find a good babysitter. I think that means they do not want to babysit this weekend."
"Well they just found one and he says he won't share." Shinichi sips at his coffee.
Ran chuckles, standing up and calling for Conan, who walks out from his bedroom already perfectly dressed (hair a mess, though). The four year old tiptoes to reach his juice box, jumping on the couch once the box is secure between his hands. Shinichi gulps his coffee before walking toward Conan and sitting himself next to his son on the couch.
"Hey," he says.
Conan blinks dazedly, clearly bored out of his mind and undoubtedly thinking about the comfort of his bed. It's barely even eight and the kid is already tired.
"So... today is a special day," he continues. Conan stares at him. "A special day for... daddies and mommies."
"Valentine's Day?" Conan asks. Shinichi frowns.
"Yes, how do you know about Valentine's Day?"
"Everyone knows about Valentine's Day, Dad."
"But you're too young to..." he shakes his head. "Never mind. Are you ready for school?"
Conan stands up as if doing so is such a burden, and Shinichi thinks about talking to Ran about ways to make kindergarten seem more interesting for their toddler.
There is no nanny available. All nannies were already booked by smarter couples that probably have been planning their Valentine's night for days. Shinichi and Ran are easily 'the rest'.
"Kuroba, please? Can you watch Conan just for one night?"
"It's Valentine's Day, Kudo."
"You told me that you don’t have any plans with Aoko anyway. You could use some company. Conan is nice company, he likes your magic tricks and he's an amazing listener. You can dump all your dissatisfaction with life and your father-in-law and the world on him, he won't even mind."
Kaito is beyond outraged. "First of all, I DO have plans with Aoko! It’s just that her father wants to have a Valentine's dinner with her that she can’t say no to.” Shinichi has to drag the phone away from his ear. “Second of all, ALL kids love my magic tricks and. And I am definitely NOT dissatisfied."
Shinichi wisely chooses not to point out the extreme dissatisfaction in the magician’s voice. "Please? Ran and I really need this moment. It's been ages since we went on a romantic dinner. We haven’t even had the chance to spend any alone time outside lately."
"And you blame that on your son." Kaito's tone is accusing and reprimanding.
"No. Yes, somehow, but, not in a bad way. It's just... Being a parent is hard. We focus all our time and energy on Conan and end up with nothing left for ourselves. I miss having a day for us, you know?"
There's silence. Shinichi hopes Kaito is trying to picture how hard it is to have a child and eventually consents, because he's Shinichi's last option. But to be honest, maybe it’s not the best idea to put in the magician’s head. He doesn’t want an angry Aoko coming for him.
"Ok, fine." Kaito answers and Shinichi punches the air in celebration. "Remember that you owe me another one and that I expect free food."
"You got it, Kuroba!"
If all kids are as calm as Conan, Kaito muses, then he can’t wait until Aoko and his bundle of joy arrives. He only prays that his child wouldn’t turn out to be as hyper as the Hattori twins. Conan doesn't seem affected by Kaito's presence, but then again, everything the kid needs is his pillow and a television. Preferably some cartoons.
Shinichi averts his gaze from the two just as his wife walks into the living room. Ran looks good. So good. And Shinichi's hands are sweating with anticipation. It's been so long since the last time they've gone out, just the two of them where clowns and kiddy toys aren't involved.
He approaches her, who is now leaning against the wall with arms folded on his chest and a fond expression on his face. She's watching Conan staring at the TV while clutching his pillow, the boy's eyes already drooping with drowsiness. Kaito sits next to him and occasionally attempts to chat, but Conan isn't exactly a conversationalist. He's one of the quiet ones. And definitely Shinichi’s son.
"He's so big," Ran mentions in that tone she only uses when talking about Conan. "Did four years really go by that fast?"
Shinichi sighs as Conan perches his head up to watch Kaito perform some tricks. "Why? Do you still think about him as a baby?"
"He's still a child. He still needs care." Ran bites her lips, worry washing over her features. "Maybe we should cancel Valentine's Dinner."
Before Shinichi can muster up an angry answer about several months without a couple's moment and the survival of their relationship while being parents, Kaito walks towards them.
"You guys should go or you'll miss the reservation," he says, that annoying complacent smile on.
"Do you have the list of things he's allowed to eat and do you have the list of numbers to call if something happens?" Ran fidgets with her fingers. Shinichi promptly holds her hands.
Kaito smiles. "Yep, I've got it covered, Ran-san. Just go and have a good time and come back early if you can."
They probably wouldn’t.
Shinichi also has a theory about having a good time on Valentine's Day.
For them, it's not possible anymore.
They make it to the reservation in peace and the lobster Ran ordered is on its way when Shinichi's phone rings. It's their home number, so it has to be Kaito. He takes a deep breath to mentally prepare himself for a disaster, but instead of destruction he gets his son's voice.
"Heiji jichan?" Conan says.
Shinichi pulls the phone away and glares at the screen. Why would his own son call Hattori, not him? Shinichi did set Hattori’s number on their speed dial after his and Ran’s, but nevertheless he is gravely disappointed.
"Conan?" he asks, Ran frowning.
"Oh Dad? Sorry, I want to call Heiji jichan. Goodb—”
Shinichi narrows his eyes and interrupts before his son can hang up. “Hey buddy, is everything ok?”
“Um, It's Kaito jichan, dad. He's dying."
Shinichi's brain processes the fact that his toddler is nowhere near harm, and he exhales very loudly in relief. And once he processes what his son actually said, he chokes on his own saliva. Ran leans towards him, eyebrows knitted together. 'What's wrong?' she mouths. Shinichi can't even bring himself to say it.
"What—” he coughs into the phone. "What do you mean, Conan? You didn't make someone stick a fork up the socket again, did you? Conan, I told you that is dangerous."
Ran gasps, horror freezing her face. Both her hands fly to her mouth as she stands up, dropping to the floor next to Shinichi's chair. He runs a hand through his hair and slowly shakes his head, reassuring her that their son is ok. Although there is someone dying and they should be on their way home already.
"He ate something from the fridge, Dad. Now he's moving funny and he sounds weird."
If he tunes everything out, he can indeed listen to faint noises in the background. That's probably Kaito having a hard time.
"What is it?" Ran asks, squeezing Shinichi's thigh.
"Kuroba ate something and is now dying."
"DYING?" She pulls herself up and paces around in panic. "He didn't eat the stew did he? Because Sonoko sent us that and she said it’s something called Bouillabaisse which is—”
“— fish... stew." Shinichi finishes lamely.
Which Kaito is tragically allergic to.
"We need to go," he jumps from his seat, drawing his wallet and throwing some money on the table. He wishes no one would steal it because they're in a hurry and he always sees people throwing money on tables at movies so he figures it works. Out of luck, the restaurant Shinichi picked is a few minute drive from their house. There's a nice chance they'll get to save Kaito.
Shinichi's theories have been proven correct:
1. He's no longer simply Kudo Shinichi, great Detective of the East and husband of Mouri Ran. He's now Kudo Shinichi, Conan's dad. 2. Therefore, it's tragically impossible to enjoy Valentine's Day with only the woman he loves.  3. His son is perfectly okay with conveniently inconveniencing his uncle Heiji at any given circumstance (in this case, he calls Heiji after Shinichi hangs up just to see which one of them would arrive to save Kaito the fastest). 4. Couldn't Kaito have picked another moment to try and die?
Shinichi's Valentine's Day is now being spent at the ER, with his four year old son fast asleep in his wife’s arms while said wife stares glassy-eyed at the television in the waiting room. It turns out that Conan was trying to call Heiji instead of him because he did not want to ruin the “special day for mommies and daddies” for his own mommy and daddy.
Well, it doesn’t really matter now. Everyone’s Valentine’s Day has been ruined beyond repair. It’s something they’d definitely look back and laugh about, but looking around the room, Shinichi’s certain that none of them has enough energy to muster a nice joke.
Although, he actually chuckles when he hears Kazuha say, “I told you something was gonna happen tonight, Heiji. I told you so.”
There are bags under Ran's eyes and her hair is disheveled, the red sweater she'd carefully picked for their date now draped loosely around their son for his warmth. Shinichi snorts, feeling mocked. All he wanted was a romantic night with his wife. That's all.
He sticks his hand into his pocket, thumb flicking over the pendant of the necklace he was supposed to give to Ran as a surprise. It's a simple necklace. Not that he doesn't have the money—it's just that Ran doesn't care about expensive stuff.
"Hey," A whisper pulls him from his reveries and Shinichi glances at his wife. Ran looks tired, but so damn beautiful. How could someone as gorgeous as her have ended up with a piece of geeky detective like him? "Don't beat yourself up."
He sighs, blinking as he drags the necklace out of his pocket. "We've changed, haven't we?" He brings his eyes up to Ran's.
“Of course we have. There are three of us now. It doesn't mean we can't have a good time. Look at Aoko-san and Kuroba-kun, I’d say they’re having it worse than us.” Ran smiles knowingly, hand caringly brushing over Conan's hair.  “Also, is that my present?”
Shinichi smiles back at her, lifting his hands. "It is... Yeah, it's supposed to be your present."
"I love it!" Ran laughs.
"I already know you do." Shinichi takes one last look at the necklace and decides that it will look better around Ran’s neck. He would gladly help Ran put the necklace on, but Conan is an effective clinger, both arms locked around his mom’s neck.
"Shinichi… thank you. I didn't have time to get you a present, sorry." She mumbles the last part of the sentence with guilt, eyes still locked with his. He can see the apologetic shine in her eyes, even though he doesn’t understand why she feels the need to apologize to him. He doesn’t want anything else from her. She’s already everything he can ever wish for.
"I don’t need anything else," he says, pushing the necklace into Ran's pocket before leaning over to peck at his wife’s lips.
Shinichi has another theory about this night.
It didn't turn out to be what he was expecting it to be: his friend almost accidentally killed himself; his four year old son almost witnessed someone die; his best friend is willing to drop anything just to attend to said son; they nearly ran over an old lady in their haste to go home to save Kaito's life (which was proven futile anyway, because Heiji miraculously appeared first to get them to the hospital) and all of them are now ending their very special night at the hospital as Kaito recovers from his near-death experience.
It was a tragedy. Everything went wrong except for one thing. Shinichi and Ran went through it all together.
