Movie 26 (Black Iron Submarine) Review

Raw feelings:
I'm completely speechless by this movie. It was way beyond any of my minimal expectations. It was extremely good!
I was baffled out of pure disbelief at how much main plot stuff they were revealing in this movie to the point that my brain fried. You could immediately feel that it was a movie you needed to rewatch multiple times in order to fully digest and appreciate its greatness. It was pure fanservice in the best way possible, not the botched M20 way, where fanservice scenes didn't feel earned, mystery being completely gone and main plot/cast characters getting sidelined. Everyone had their moment to shine.
After 15 years, I get a DC movie that finally topped M13 as my new all-time favorite DC movie. I was so thoroughly satisfied that I couldn't help but clap at the end.
Haibara (Sherry)
Haibara truly shined in this movie. Not only did she have proactive role in rescuing herself, Naomi and later Conan, but her personal romantic feelings, childhood past and current relationships with her dear friends were further fleshed out. I was floored by the degree that she got exposed, to the point of the OG antagonist Vodka standing right in front of her next to Pinga, ready to kidnap her, and then later interrogating her about her identity.

I truly adore how the movie also revealed what started the bullying she went through in America (protecting her fellow half-japanese) and how Naomi's story complimented Haibara's childhood. It was a beautiful touch having Haibara's childhood classmate Naomi realizing Haibara's true identity by the end of the movie.

I also love how the movie depicted how highly Haibara viewed Conan/Shinichi and his protective reassuring face. It was cute seeing her face light up with happiness when he showed up. I was shocked, but also very appreciative of how respectful she was trying to be of Shinichi's relationship with Ran (more than the fandom clearly) that she went to the degree of passing on her CPR kiss with Conan to Ran.

Mizunashi (Kir)
Kir was one of the big standouts in this movie. You could truly feel the shift in spotlight focus between her and Bourbon, seeing as Bourbon was truly put in the backburner for Kir to get more shine, and it was perfectly handled and a true overdue for her (since she has been neglected in the franchise overall). I couldn't stop grinning and appreciate her nonchalant stunts to aid in Haibara's escape by pretending to not know how to open the exit tube in the submarine so Vodka could thoroughly explain it as Haibara overhears everything through the transmitter.

I especially loved her less indirect and confrontational move towards Gin, when she directly interferred with his murder attempt of Haibara & Naomi, and how she calmly talked back at Gin when he aimed the gun at her. She was a true badass worthy of her NOC title, that I've longed to see in the series, only to get it in this wonderful movie.

Pinga
I really enjoyed Pinga's role in the movie as well, and especially appreciated how he wasn't written to be similar to Irish and Curacao (who had a more sympathetic antagonist development) but rather to be a more selfish greedy psychopath with more ambition than Gin, but less talented. It was interesting to learn how he was deep undercover as an engineer for interpol since 5 years back while disguised as a woman.

I especially enjoyed seeing his fights with Ran, and how she became a troublesome enemy for him (giving Ran good spotlight like in M13), as well as how Conan straight up shit-talked to him while giving Gin praise in comparison, to the point of riling Pinga up.

Vermouth
Vermouth was the true MVP in this movie. She had such a central role in saving Haibara from the organization's suspicion. It was extremely exciting to see Vermouth immediately sensing the potential of Naomi's All-age Recognition System (ARS) and how it could expose the boss identity and whereabouts, but more importantly to her, expose Shinichi's shrinking, that she'd rather keep hidden like a pandora's box. I was shocked and loved how she manipulated the Boss into giving her the order to destroy the ARS for his own sake, when she in reality wanted to not only conceal the current APTX shrinking effects from him, but also protect Shinichi. The way she used her disguising skills to invalidate the ARS' accuracy was just a genius move by her.

The biggest surprise to me was how she was revealed to be the old woman from the start in disguise, who was given the sale ticket for a Fusae brand brooch by Haibara out of selfless kindness, and how Vermouth was basically revealed to also be repaying that kindness back to Haibara by protecting her from the BO, further deepening her motivations and multi-faceted nature in such a beautiful way as she gazes at the confused Silver Bullet (Conan) who is questioning them after getting Bourbon's intel.

Rum & Karasuma Renya
The Biggest shocker in this whole movie was without a doubt the big reveal that Rum, the no.2 of the Black Organization, is unaware of the Boss' whereabouts in recent times and that, apart from having Pinga request Naomi to sell the ARS to them so they can modify it and also use it to erase the BO's activities in security cameras (according the boss' orders), had intended to use the ARS to locate Karasuma Renya (the Boss).

This was a huge bombshell reveal, yet to be revealed in the manga, that further clarified the current ongoings within the organization. It basically as good as confirmed that the Boss is hiding a de-aged form from his subordinates (including his very close associate, Rum) and that no one other than Vermouth is aware of his hidden whereabouts. This revelation is further supporting my "Child of seven (Nanatsu no ko)" theory (the Boss being a shrunken 7-year-old who is only contacting his subordinates through phone to hide his child appearance and maintain authority). This also further established a distrustful relationship between Karasuma Renya and Rum, seeing as the Boss has kept Rum out of the loop, and how Rum has persisted to locate the Boss against his wishes, creating a very small divide within the organization's power structure. This is extremely exciting for the future of the series and has gotten me very hyped for what's left of Rum's development in the Rum climax.

Conclusion
This movie was overall a 10/10 product, that gave all the fans outstanding fanservice. Conan's devotion to save Haibara, Ran's supportive contribution to the point of almost getting shot, Agasa's deeply moving heartfelt tears after Haibara's kidnapping, Kuroda's helpful backing of Conan, Bourbon's informational support and Akai's loyal aid in taking down the submarine were all just the tip of the iceberg. All the beautiful callbacks to canon events were also among the best of the fanservice. I especially loved Haibara's callback to how a child (Ayumi) had once changed her life through their actions (File 437), Pisco kidnapping her despite wearing glasses (File 240), Ran reminding Haibara of Akemi (like in File 434), Kir's callback to her father sacrificing himself for her in response to Naomi's cry (File 604) and all the moments Haibara recalled when Conan comforted and moved her (Bus hijack, Haibara intro, Reunion, etc).
Gosho's involvement in the story was clearly noticeable, just by the sheer quality of the movie, and all of his many drawn keyframes were beautiful.

I am currently rewatching and rereading Parasyte. I'm really glad that I watched the anime before I picked up the manga when I first came across the story. Otherwise, I would have enjoyed the anime a lot less. The anime, in the first episode alone, made three changes I really dislike.
The first is one that happens a lot in TV which I hate, which is where the first episode shows scenes in non-chronological order. It is just unnecessarily confusing. The original showed them in sequence and I see no reason to deviate from it. Its not like the original took too long to get to the gory stuff that grips attention.
The second is that they added an accidental boob grab. I must have excised it from my memory, because it caught me completely off guard. It adds nothing to the plot or the dynamic between the characters and just makes the show more awkward to recommend to non-weebs since it is in an early scene of the first fucking episode. I think my initial opinion of the show would have been lower if I had been introduced to it via the first episode rather than midway through.
The third is adding a 'zero to hero' plot. Shinichi in the original manga was just an ordinary dude. He wasn't scared of bugs, and he wasn't awkward around Murano. They even gave him glasses in the anime to up his Peter Parkeriness. They must have thought 'oh no, our protagonist is not a loser, he won't be relatable to our audience!'. Fuck off, that is insulting. Okay, look, I get it. They probably added it because that way there is more of a contrast between the before and after in his character arc. Put I think they missed the point. Parasyte is not a story about a loser boy becoming an awesome action hero. It is a story about an ordinary high schooler thrust into a dangerous situation, losing both his ordinary life as well as his humanity, only to regain both by the end of the story, but having grown through the trials he overcame in between. In the manga, the initial scenes with him focus on how Migi disrupts his ordinary life. Migi morphs into various things which Shinichi has to hide, including a giant Phallus while he is in a restaurant! Its pretty funny actually, and sadly missing from the anime. The manga already has the main character go through enough change (its probably the best part of the story). It didn't need more.
I don't really mind them changing the setting to contemporary modern day rather than the nineties when the original manga was written, though I do think that it is a bit unnecessary.
I do actually like the anime. The animation, music (dubstep is cool) and voice acting are all great. Well, except for that one shot of really bad CG they used for random students walking to the school.
Also, Migi is just the cutest little psychopath. I luv it. Speaking of, diversity win! The cold-blooded alien parasite, by virtue of having no apparent capacity to reproduce or interest in human values, is nonbinary! Migi and its relationship to its host Shinichi is definitely the best part of the series for me. Its a fascinating situation, where a very rational but completely amoral alien and a conscientious human have to share a body and cooperate despite their differences. What I find very endearing about Migi is that it is actually very reasonable and always wishes to work together with its host when possible. All of the evil aliens in the story are actually very cooperative in nature, which I really like. Smart villains are great.
One final remark: Its funny how my view on the body horror in the story has changed. When I first saw some scene or ad for the anime, I was convinced I would never watch a show that disgusting. When a friend of mine was watching it though, I actually really got into it, and basically watched it in spite of the gross body horror. At some point, I watched it because (but not only because) of the body horror. Tastes change, huh.

Getting shot two times in a row—even when the bullets were only grazing your right leg and upper arm and missing its target, burying themselves somewhere else deep into—wasn't fun and never would be to remember.
You stumbled a bit, cursing loudly when the pain flared up, but didn't stop in your running. You didn't even know where to run and hide to, not knowing the area—which looked more than just devastated empty of any civilisation—you're in.
Somehow you ended up in the ruins of a empty school—either elementary or middle school—it didn't matter, right now Conan and you needed a place to hide—to catch some breath and rethink of a new tactic to survive this psychopath.
Picking up on your speed, you run inside—trekking the stairs up to the second floor, kicking open one of the classroom doors and ducked inside.
Leaning against the wall, you pulled out your phone, reading Shinichi's SMS once, twice and a third time again.
Dialling your brother's number, holding the phone against your ear, you waited with bated breath for him to pick up—hoping to hear his steady voice of reassurance again.
��Apologies, this number is currently unreachable, please try again later.“
Biting down onto your lip, you slid the wall down—closing your eyes and taking a deep breath—clutching your (f.colour) flip-phone, with its silly keychains and the few even more silly stickers on it, against your chest.
Nothing had actually changed, hasn't it? How desperate stupid could you any more be—believing, especially in that false—hope crushing and heartache bringing—SMS, that Shinichi would come back at all.
Asshole. Asshole, asshole, asshole—Shinichi is such a fucking asshole.
When you needed Shinichi the most—in a situation where you felt nothing but inner turmoil of being anxious scared—he wasn't there.
At least not when it comes to you, because you're certainly sure that he calls Ran—when she's scared—that's Shinichi's only priority, besides solving cases and being a wannabe detective.
»[Name]......?«
»I can't do this, can't do this......it's pointless.....I'm dumb, so fucking dumb....«
»No [Name], don't give up now! We're gonna–argh!« Conan couldn't finish his sentence, feeling a shock of electricity through his body—being grabbed and thrown to the sides.
When Daiki found you and Conan, he had easy play with you—pushing you onto the floor and kicking you against your already bruised stomach and you were like a helpless doll again.
»Mhm, should have destroyed the damned phone right away when I took you. Now, let's see what made you so defiantly.«
Daiki read the SMS, grinning wickedly as he kicked you in the stomach again when you were about to get up. A scoff left his lips, dropping your phone to the ground and stepping onto it—breaking it in half.
»No!« you shouted, looking at him with wide eyes.
The only message you've gotten from Shinichi—ever since his abrupt disappearance—the only sign of him, that he was still alive—still here, somewhere—and hadn't abandoned you—was now crushed like the last bit of hope left in you.
You glanced at Conan, feeling guilty with what you were about to say next—admitting defeat, for once, freely. Though with what Daiki had said next, brought a wave of anger back.
»Hah! You really believed such trash? Please, we both know that your dear brother is nothing but a liar. Don't fool yourself.«
»Shut up.«
»Huh? Repeat that, I didn't quite hear that, dear.«
»Shut the fuck up! Don't you fucking dare calling Shinichi a liar ever again!«
With an uproar you sprung back up, pushing Daiki with full force into the tables and throwing one or two chairs onto him. Grabbing Conan again, holding him against you, you run out into the hallway—overthinking every route of escape you could take and decided for another drastic move.
Setting Conan down, you pulled off your jacket—putting the jacket then onto Conan, hood over his head—and taken him back into your arms.
»What are you doing [Name]?!«
»It's gonna be okay, just close your eyes and hold on tight.» you hugged Conan closer to you, arms secured around him. Taking a deep breath and then you sprinted towards that one window where you knew was a roof overhang below.
Hah! Sport tournament was nothing against a good old jump—through the second floor window, you thought. Picking up on your speed, ignoring the next grazing bullet against your leg, you jumped—twisting your body in a way that your back collided with the window, sending you crashing down onto the tin roof and pressing the air out of your lungs.
The short moment, in your free fall, of where you had seeing a glimpse of the darkening sky above you—reminds you of what you always would fear, death itself.
And while death itself scares you, even though you had days where you are close to step into the realm of afterlife, the last shimmer of sun-rays brought back a wish of once lost dream.
Getting up, had you no time to regain your breath, smashing the next window and stepped with Conan into the first floor. Another sprint, time was sacred now, searching for another place to hide in.

Hiding in the girls restroom, was a good decision or at least sounded like one. Sitting Conan onto the counter, you barley took a glance at yourself in the mirror—not wanting to see the brutal truth of ugliness and insecurity in it, which is just a reflection of you.
Rubbing your face and leaning against the counter as well, you let out a tired sigh—breathing heavily as you tried to regulate your breath again.
Your lungs burned, feeling so sandpaper dry—like your voice used to be hours ago—and your body ached from exhaustion. You wanted nothing more than to sleep, god, does sleep sounds so promising—so peaceful.
Fishing out a package of cigarettes, a lighter and two small bottles from the jacket, you lighting one up and took a long drag from the cigarette, letting the burning smoke invade your already heavy lungs—why you had cigarettes packed in the jacket, Conan didn't know and he also didn't knew that you smoked, but that was a question for another time—before taking the cigarette and pressing the tip onto your wounds.
»You know Conan–« you begun, didn't know yourself why you start to feel so nostalgic—so sentimental—and wanting to share a memory—from your childhood, so pure and with so much happiness in it—about Shinichi and you with Conan.
Perhaps it was because time was running out and you wanted to cherish in the past again, once last time.
Or maybe—and that's sounds more likely—it's the mix of morphine and adrenaline you gulped down, seconds ago, in one go—like a shot of vodka—choking on it as the taste was anything but pleasant and taking it on a empty stomach was not good, wanting to vomit up right away—because apparently you still weren't feeling mad-hatter and joker enough.
Whatever it might have been, in this moment it just felt right to share this sacred moment.
»Just mere moments ago, I wanted to give up once more. For final this time.«
»And why didn't you?«
»Besides the asshole insulting my brother? A thunder of thoughts, a flashback, struck me.« you stopped again, smiling at Conan and ruffling through his hair.
And then you told Conan about the most treasured memory you had;
It was during elementary when Digimon had its rookie-start in the TV. Shinichi and I would've watched it everyday and the openings—and few songs in it—had me so awestruck with joy, that Shinichi once begged our parents to buy him a walkman with the tape.
Shinichi didn't wanted any other presents for his birthday, except for this and when they gave in and brought it—Shinichi, proudly and happily grinning, had giving me the walkman.
Telling me—in all seriousness he could muster with his chubby face—that whenever I would start to feel sad again—back then, our parents already knew what started to happen with me, but all Shinichi and I knew was that I was feeling immense sadness and sometimes pain—it was also during the time, where I tried to drown myself in the bathtub for the first time and I will never forget the frightful and worried face of my knightly brother on that day—I should listen to the tape.
Because Shinichi had believed, that when I listened to the tape, the sadness would go away and somehow it did—but not really because of the music itself, but because—and it took me some years to understand—of Shinichi himself, who always acts so selflessly just to make me laugh.
Conan never wanted to tell you so badly, that he's Shinichi—that he's here with you, like how he always promised you and that there's no need to ever be sad again, because your brother is here and everything is gonna be alright.
But Conan couldn't, just couldn't do that. It would brought you more trouble and in danger—making you another target for the Men in Black and being an achilles heel to himself—than you already had.
The truth would cause more harm to yourself and could bring you into, perhaps, final collapse with your fragile mental health—and the thought of you being mad at him, Conan just couldn't stand and wouldn't forgiving himself for it.
»And whenever we've listen to these songs, which I still do nowadays, Shin-Chan would tell that all our dreams and wishes would come true.«
»Did they come true? Your dreams?«
»They did. At least for Shin-chan, who is, besides my wonderful boyfriend of course, the greatest detective of all times«
»And what about you [Name]?«
»Me? Well, I don't think I ever really had something akin to a dream or goal in life. Till now. Meeting Heiji, you, having the people around me which I love so much, make me realise something,«
Taking off your necklace, which had Heiji's promise-ring—and a pendant with Shinichi's and your parents names (and birthstones) engraved on it—looped in and putting it around Conan, tapping his nose.
»Besides me wanting to die on some days, it is worth to live after all. So I'm gonna promise you Conan, here and now, that I won't die tonight and neither will you. We're gonna survive this night and see the sunrise once more.«
And then you told Conan the next steps of your new reforming plan. Telling how you will smash Daiki—even though the fucker deserves a headshot, but Shinichi once said; killing someone out of self-justice, makes you not better than a murder themselves—into the ground and making him regret everything he had done.

Detective Conan chapter 51 : the first Night Baron twist.
Obvious spoilers ahead.
And that's how we already close the chapter of why Conan lives will live with Ran for the next thousand chapters (I don't know if this statu quo is changing to be honest) : Kudo's parents are in ! And are way too happy about playing hide and seek and murder with their son.
I know it could be easy to write them off as psychopaths willing to traumatize their son but... It's Shinichi, I get it. He's not easily traumatized (the man loves to inspect crime scene after all), he's reckless (see chapter one) and wants to do everything alone (see chapter one). Defeating him and forcing him to see, to feel his limitations is a good answer.
But they do enjoy that wayyyyyy too much.
Nice revenge of Shinichi who stuck his father in a plane with angry editors.
Over all, a really "convenient" resolution, a trick to say "Conan will stay with Ran and this question is not a plot point anymore" and Kudo's parents are way too careless, but it's okay, you know. Feels nice. Fun. And Night Baron.

Shiho and Kaito going on motorbike rides together, them playing with the Detective Boys, them exchanging fashion advice and showing each other their trick guns (Haibara's bouquet gun felt like a magic trick, a morbid prank that the Phantom Lady would approve of) and the non-BO Shiho likes less violent options like Kid's card gun. I like the headcanon that Kaito has an understanding of chemistry from stuff like smoke bombs and sleeping gas and Pandora and the Black Organisation feel related, maybe a branch family or a rival organisation.
I can see the detective boys keeping their older sister (Shiho) secret about her boyfriend. I like the idea of ​​their relationship being an open secret, the detective boys know, Agasa knows, Ran knows, but Shinichi doesn't. Shinichi knows that Shiho has a boyfriend, but he doesn't know that it's 1412 and it's really funny because he only hears good things about this guy and he's really curious about who the crazy guy is that fell in love with Shiho.
I can see Kaito organizing fun family activities because he knows that kids are important to Shiho. Kaito will probably ask to borrow her trick gun since he thinks it's cool.
I have this mental image of them riding a motorcycle and Shiho shooting KID's card gun.
I like to imagine them both as lab partners, Kaito as Shiho's apprentice since he has some knowledge from her smoke bombs. Maybe Kaito being an assistant to help her develop the cure for aptx.
It would be great if both organizations were related! Imagine Kaito and Shiho talking about how the organization took away what they loved the most (Akemi and Toichi), and Kaito expressing his desire for revenge to Shiho.
WAIT, LOOK AT THIS FANART I LOVE OF THEM.
I like it a lot because they both look like psychopaths and it makes me think that they fit together very well, since they are both criminals who hate their crimes. This one is also nice, but I see it more platonic.

I am back once again with the Evil Shinichi/Conan AU shit, thanks to this post and the Detective Conan fanfic I mentioned above.
As you can see, based on his clothes, you could assume it was Makoto Okuda, it's because I was inspired on the episode "Kudo Shinichi, Murderer". Just imagine if that was really Kudo Shinichi who kills people on hindsight and make them look like a suicide, while solving cases as the famous Detective of the East.
I mean... psychopath!Shinichi is an interesting concept, since psychopaths can also be very charming (even if only superficially) and they have the ability to confidently take risks, be ruthless, goal-oriented and make bold decisions. They also react far less intensely in such fear-evoking situations. If anything, they remain calm.
Shinichi already has the intelligence, is reckless and has the charm to manipulate other people, since he can fool everyone as Conan with his cutesy voice and his jab on the target's weaknesses (he had manipulated Kogoro to let him come to crime scenes many times because of Kogoro's tendency to boast). In fact, he was always calm and collected in crime scenes, and sometimes show no emotion over the matter (although he sometimes feel bad about the people involved in the case, but he has to feel calm to solve them).
But in this dark Detective Conan AU, what if he had developed the urge to murder people when he was a little child, back when Yusaku first brought him to crime scenes?

“Shinichi,” she whispered, warm blue orbs losing focus as she looked at him, though her smile remained. She rose her hand to caress his cheek (she’s so, so cold). “You found us.”
Her chapped lips met his, and then, “Arigato.”
A/N: I swear that this was supposed to be fluffy but brain said nope, angst-infused it is. Also, I’m no expert in medicine nor the Japanese police system, even criminology for that matter. Spare me. Enjoy!
Day 9
“I should write a book.”
Shinichi’s first instinct was to snort, as he was reminded of Kogoro-ojisan’s—who he should really be calling otousan nowadays—intention of becoming a mystery novelist, much like his actual father. Kudo Yusaku had made millions writing his thrillers, and today, years after the older Kudo patriarch decided to publish his final novel, he was still adding money to the Kudo fortune.
Perhaps his mother playing the titular character in one of Night Baron’s spinoff adaptations, Lady Baron, played a huge factor too. His parents were weird that way, almost like a tag-team, because the moment Kudo Yusaku announced his writing retirement, Kudo Yukiko came out of hers.
It was as if they thought that the world could not handle more than three (he was pretty sure his popularity was on par with his parents, despite his lack of big screen appearances) famous Kudos at a time.
“Finally jumping on the full Kudo experience?” he teased, adjusting himself on the hospital bed where his wife sat, left arm wrapped around her whole frame, right palm covering hers.
Eyes focused on the little bundle in her arms, she hummed before answering, “A best-seller for sure.”
As if on cue, their newborn squirmed before revealing twin orbs that matched his mother’s, unfocused eyes looking up to the woman who went through hell and back prior to his birth.
“Anata,” she called, her tired voice laced with a hint of excitement. “He’s beautiful.”
 Day 1
He stood in an abandoned room of an equally abandoned motel located just 50 km on the outskirts of Tokyo, the very location that had him and nearly the whole Tokyo Metropolitan Police Taskforce wrecking their brains and exhausting their resources to find. The identified suspect was one Seisaku Miyazaki, a serial rapist and killer with a tendency for flairs. The 27 crime scenes he left always had distinct blood splatter to them, resulting from either gunshot wounds straight to the temple, or intraoral ones.
Shinichi had never seen a crime scene so gruesome in his life.
As soon as Shinichi stepped into the room, the first thing he should have registered was the blood-spattered left wall and Seisaku’s limp and lifeless body on a chair in the same left corner, his riffle trapped in between his legs.
Instead, Shinichi’s frantic eyes zeroed on the figure on the bed in the middle of the room, merely 10 feet away from Seisaku’s body. The woman had her back against the headboard with an ungodly amount of blood running down her bottom half, arms cocooning a small bundle wrapped with a violet-colored cardigan—the same one she was last saw wearing before her disappearance.
She had her eyes on her baby, as if the newborn was the only person who mattered, seemingly unbothered by the chaos unfolding before her. It took the lead detective a full five seconds to notice that the newborn—oh God, their newborn—was not crying.
He was beside her in her flash, holding her tighter than he should. His wife was again, unbothered, but he noticed that she closed their baby more to her semi-naked chest. The cuts and bruises on her face and torso did not go unnoticed by him. All of Seisaku’s victims had the same markings, but unlike those women who bled from their heads, she was bleeding from bottom down.
Kudo Shinichi screamed for the medic.
It was only then did he hear a soft cry, and he released a breath he did not know he was holding.
“Anata,” she called, finally removing her gaze from their son to look at him “He’s beautiful.”
Her face was pale and hollow, but there was no mistaking the warmth in her eyes and the gentleness of her smile.
His heart both bloomed and broke for her.
“Ran,” he choked out the name he’d been desperately calling for the past few hours. “You’re going to be okay.”
When the medic team finally appeared, his wife first handed the closest medic the baby, “Take care of him, onegai,” she requested, sounding too much like a plea. “He’s a good boy.”
Releasing her son’s warmth, the brunette fell back onto her husband, who caught her naked shoulders, throwing her full weight onto his.
“Shinichi,” she whispered, warm blue orbs losing focus as she looked at him, though her smile remained. She rose her hand to caress his cheek (she’s so, so cold). “You found us.”
Her chapped lips meet his, and then, “Arigato.”
With a sigh of relief, she shut her eyes, and rolled limp further into her husband’s embrace.
Shinichi’s world stood still, the only things registering in his mind were his wife’s cold body, and their newborn’s loud cries in the distant.
 Day 8
She was in pure fight mode, forcing her body to function and conscious to stay awake. Once she knew that her child was safe, all the injuries and agony finally caught up to her, and she welcomed the numbing darkness.
The last thing Ran remembered was Shinichi’s rapid heartbeat drumming her ears.
The new mother woke up a week later, on an unfamiliar bed, to the familiar but tormented eyes of her husband.
“Baby,” she mustered breathily, and her husband’s eyes all but softened.
She knew that they were safe.
   Day 10
It was another two whole days before she was deemed fit enough to hold her newborn.
“Anata,” she beams, “He’s beautiful.”
“He is,” the Heisei-Reiwa Holmes agreed. “The brat gave the doctors and nurses a fright with his fever, would not stop crying too.”
If his wife was worried, she did not show it. “Is that true?” she cooed, “But you’re okay now, aren’t you sweetheart? Your Papa found us after all.”
Day 0
Kudo Ran did not fit Seisaku Miyazaki’s victim profiles by the slightest. The females he preyed on were usually late teens to early twenties, lived alone, physically petite, and had questionable practices in their private lives.
Or, in the words of Seisaku himself, whores.
Catching the serial killer had been the detective’s top priority, with the death count at 27 and the most recent killings at the heart of Tokyo, it was one of the most challenging cases for him to date.
With half of the murders in Tokyo and the other half in Osaka, it was a no brainer for both Detective of the East and West to join hands, special taskforces from Tokyo and Osaka rallying under their (unofficial) command. The investigation had been ongoing for more than four months before special unit finally made a definite progress, being able to identify a potential victim, shadowing her day and night, coming in to save her just in time from being abducted, and arresting Seisaku’s paid minion.
Genzo Okubo was no Seisaku, the two detectives figured. The latter was confident, methodical, a true psychopathic mastermind, yet the man they caught fumbled with his words, sweated profusely, and most importantly, had little loyalty as he quickly confessed to everything.
The unit rejoiced, but Shinichi and Heiji knew that it was too simple, as if Seisaku wanted Gento to be caught.
By the time they were finished with the guy, it was already 2 a.m.
The lack of miscalls from him wife caught him off guard.
He tried not to panic, reasoning to himself that Ran was probably at her parents’, fell asleep, and his in-laws forgot to inform him. After all, it would not be the first time this had happened. If anything, the Mouris had not stopped fussing over their daughter, and with this case constantly on his mind, Shinichi had not really been the doting husband and father-to-be that he ought to be. Their six-year-old twins were away with his parents somewhere in New York, the elder Kudo couple wanting to give the once-again new parents space to get ready for the youngest Kudo’s arrival.
Halfway through dialing Eri’s number (because his mother-in-law was a light sleeper), Heiji burst into the break room with a suspicious package in his hands.
“Kudo,” the dark-skinned detective panted, as if he just ran up flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator, “that bastard’s got Nee-chan.”
Inside the package were two things: a picture of a very pregnant Kudo Ran, blindfolded and gagged, and a lone platinum wedding band.
  Day 10
“He panicked.”
“Hmm?”
“Seisaku-san, he panicked.” His wife stated, the name of her kidnapper rolling of her tongue like she was mentioning a student of hers. “I started having contractions, started bleeding too. He mumbled something about ‘not following his plan’.”
Shinichi rose his brows, puzzled by Ran’s statement, but he let her continue.
“I think,” she paused, readjusting her hold on their son when they boy started to writhe, “that he was halfway out when Seisaku-san decided to shoot himself.”
Her voice was cool, too indifferent, and deep down, Shinichi knew that his wife may be scarred for life.
“Three sounds,” she gulped then snickered. “Me screaming during the final push, the baby’s cries, and the riffle going off.”
Shinichi held her tighter.
“His blood was everywhere, Shinichi. On the walls, the carpet, the bed, my face,” There are now cracks in her voice, the memories flooding her overwhelmed mind as she remembers it all again, “On our baby boy.”
“Ran…” He trailed off, not knowing what to say. His wife and son were alive, but the trauma she went through was something he wished on no one, not even Seisaku himself.
“I didn’t want him to get cold, so I wrapped him with my cardigan. Not the most hygienic, I know, but I didn’t exactly have many choices,” a chuckle. “He locked the door, so I couldn’t escape, and I couldn’t exactly kick the door open, my energy was spent on giving birth. So, I started breastfeeding the baby, burping him…making sure he was alive long enough for you to find us.”
Something in him shattered even more.
Ran averted her eyes away from their son to look at her husband, their faces only a few centimeters apart.  There were no tears in their eyes, the pain and regret that remained in their hearts too crushing to be expressed by mere crying. “I’m safe, our boy is safe, because you found us. None of this is your fault, so please, Anata,” she kisses him before continuing, “don’t blame yourself.”
Shinichi could not imagine what life would be without her. She was his wife, partner, lover, best friend, soulmate, the mother of his children, his world, his everything.
“Okay,” he promised simply, capturing her lips for a second time before kissing her forehead. “I love you.”
He felt her smiling into his neck, and at that moment, nothing was wrong; they were whole.
They stayed like that for a few more moments, savoring the peaceful yet short time they had with their baby boy before one of the nurses took him away for the night.
    Day 11
 “Your book,” Shinichi remembered far into the night. “What are you going to write about?”
A mischievous look twinkled in Ran’s eyes, and the man knows that his wife will heal just fine. “Kidnapped 101.”

That London confession was heaven yes, but it still hits differently when the confession is as direct as this -- HE, Kudou Shinichi, EXPRESSLY declaring that he LOVES HER, Mouri Ran. Those three words.

What do you think of Eri as a mother? Of course, she loves Ran and Ran loves her, but I feel like a kind of absent mother (she only meets Ran once in a while), and sometimes a little cold with her daughter. Also, it doesn't seem to me the most sensible thing to allow Ran, who was just a little girl, to stay with Kogoro, considering how careless he is.
I have conflicted feelings about all Conan parents, because I love them as characters, but very much disagree with all of their parenting choices. 
Honestly, there isn’t a single parent in this story who I think does a great parenting job. Except maybe Agasa, and he’s technically not a parent. 
The Kudos? Watch me discuss it ad aeternum in my tag, but they’re not the best parents. Leaving their kid alone at 14 just to live somewhere else cause they felt like it??? Scaring the crap out of their son by pretending to kidnap him???? Those crazy motherfuckers. 
Kogoro? I love him and his development but my man isn’t gonna be nominated for Father of the Year anytime soon, what with being an alcoholic and a womanizing idiot who can barely take care of himself. Sure he’s super protective of Ran and is capable of stepping up when he has to, but still, long way to go my friend. 
Heizo and Shizuka??? Y’all he punched his own son. Things are not right.
The Miyanos? Entering a criminal organization and forcing their daughters to be a part of it even after their death?????? Are we fucking kidding??? 
Don’t even get me started on Mary Akai. That psychopathic bitch. 
And Eri is also, unfortunately, added to the list. I love that she’s a strong, independent woman with a great job. I love that she’s a super intelligent female character on parr with Yusaku and Akai and even Shinichi. But, girl, you left your own daughter when she was, what? Six? Seven? You left her with her kinda good-for-nothing father and sort of kept in touch with her but not really? Yeah, she loves her and would also give her life for her and whatnot, but her parenting skills suck big time. 
I’m not sure about Heizo and Shizuka, but maybe the reason the Kudos and Kogoro and Eri are such terrible parents is because they had kids when they were too fucking young. Maybe they weren’t ready for the responsibility. Maybe they thought it was something different. I don’t know, but honestly, I’m really fucking surprised your kids turned out to be the more than decent people they are after the rather questionable way you raised them.

Shinichi always finds his neighbour weird. But he didn’t expect to find his neighbour lying on a patch of grass and donned in Kaitou Kid’s costume, too.
For three years, Shinichi had lived a quiet life.
It wasn't something to boast, and neither was it a sad thing, really. It was just a quiet life where he was no longer in the body of a child, encountering murders on a unhealthy daily basis or dealing with organization filled with deadly psychopaths.
Yes, the quiet life.
But not normal.
After that entire Edogawa Conan mess, the only thing that returned normal was Shinichi's body. As for his life... The lies he had built up had turned into an empire, and when that empire fell, the consequences were dire, and he had a lot to pay back.
Nothing could ever be normal from that.
The moment he got his body back, Shinichi quietly left his old high-school and attended a new one. He then quietly graduated and worked his way into the police force without the need for a degree. He quietly solved his cases with little media attention, and quietly became an Inspector within a year in the job...
Even though Ran left home the moment she got accepted into a college located at the other end of Japan, Shinichi didn't wish his name to ever appear in her sight. As for her father, who remained in Tokyo, he still wasn't handling well after realising the only thing he thought he was good at—being the Sleeping Kogoro—was all just a pack of lies. The last cruel thing Shinichi could do was to claim any sort of limelight again, so he decided to leave their lives, stay low, and lead a quiet life for the next three years after graduation...
Actually, screw that quiet part.
Shinichi hadn't been living any close to quiet since the new neighbour moved in next door two months ago.
Kuroba Kaito.
Literally, there wasn't anything quiet about that guy; often blasting loud music; not keeping his ill-mannered doves in check; different women and men occasionally coming in and out of his house… Shinichi's annoyance was one level above his roof every time he remembered Kuroba's existence, but the one that takes the cake was his weird demeanour.
Kuroba had his ways with charming their neighbours, like the single mother living opposite their street and the old lady who baked cookies every Sunday. And that was the thing; as Edogawa Conan, Shinichi charmed his way through unsuspecting policemen and even the murderers, dropping their guards as Shinichi manipulated them to get what he wanted. Maybe it was because they thought he was literally a child, but his acting played a big part too.
Basically, Shinichi saw the Edogawa Conan in Kuroba.
(It takes one to know one.)
And he wondered why.

Tonight was just like most other nights; Shinichi had finally returned home, tired and not really looking forward to reading two stacks of notes on the latest serial killer on the loose. After downing a cup of black coffee, he went to the kitchen to wash the mug and causally glanced up at the window that faced Kuroba's back garden.
He frowned.
Placing the mug on the rack, Shinichi trudged past the kitchen counter, his eyes remained staring through the window glass.
He swore he just saw a glimpse of white flying by.
Shinichi didn't believe in ghost. So if he had eliminated the impossible, the only thing he could come up to explain that white thing was a big blanket or a cloth happening to blow past...
Aha, he was right. Shinichi smirked as he saw the white cloth caught itself onto Kuroba's fence and flapping wildly when a wind passed—
Wait.
Or maybe he wasn't entirely right.
Noticing something was wrong, Shinichi frowned as he jogged towards the door to his backyard. Skipping past his few pitiful attempts of trying to grow some potted plants, he peered over his fence to get a better look at the cloth.
It wasn't white. Not entirely.
It was red too, and he recognised that red, even if it was in the middle of the night.
Shinichi glanced towards Kuroba's house. The cloth couldn't have come from the second floor, but the first floor of Kuroba's house was dark. In fact, it was too dark for Shinichi's taste.
A twist of his gut sent him climbing over the fence without hesitation. After jumping over to Kuroba's side, Shinichi went to check on the cloth, and for the first time he hoped he was wrong.
But he was hardly wrong—The good portion of the cloth was indeed tainted by blood. Shinichi highly doubted the blood was caused by a paper cut… but he decided not to think anymore, because the more he did, the more he fear he would be right.
Clutching onto the cloth, he turned and decided to find the source—
Originally from Shinichi's house, he couldn't see anything, but now from the angle of Kuroba's backyard, Shinichi instantly found him lying right behind the rows of his thick, rose plantations.
And he also found out the cloth in his hand wasn't any kind of cloth.
It was Kaitou Kid's cape.
