This year, my goal was to outdo my post last year—and I was really, really proud of that work so it was a tall order. I followed a similar concept—the two photographs, then and now—but this time, I wanted to explore how becoming Conan was good for Shinichi—as a result, he’s gained so many people who care about him.

Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for some angst as well :)

Hope you all enjoy this! And happy 2nd anniversary of posting DCMK art to me :) I know I haven’t been terribly active lately but my love for the show and these characters have not changed! Thank you all for enjoying my work!

What if AU where the Trip to Hawaii that Shinichi constantly references in relation to his odd bits of knowledge and expertise was really the Kudos running away from people trying to kill them following Toichi's murder because of Yusaku's close relationship with his twin brother.

Yukiko and Yusaku were forced to teach Shinichi how to do a lot of complicated and frightening things like flying a plane, shooting a gun, or disarming a bomb on the spot because it meant life or death until one day Yusaku cashed in one of his government agent favours and got their relation to the Kurobas erased so they could safely hide away in Beika. They frequently went on extended trips in order to make sure they weren't being tracked before finally relaxing and living their lives comfortably until canon happened.

Shinichi has no idea why any of that happened and both of his parents are extremely tight-lipped about the truth, always referring to the people who tried to kill them as Yusaku's crazed editors. Shinichi eventually gave up on trying to find out because all evidence was meticulously discarded and just referred to it as the Hawaii Trip™.

He gets a kick out of the increasingly incredulous expressions on people's faces when he tells them he learned what cocaine tasted like in Hawaii or that he learned Russian there too. It gets even funnier when he becomes Conan, although he is careful to avoid making the joke when Ran is around.

Yusaku and Toichi are twin brothers... Their parents divorced when they were little, and Yusaku sticks out with his mother and Toichi with his father. Toichi is still alive and in contact with Yusaku. Rip KaiShin!!!

My condolonces to the Kaishin fans, but Kaito and Shinichi being revealed to be cousins is so funny though, can you imagine if there was a family reunion??

Yusaku's like "hey Shinichi we're gonna meet my twin's family who I haven't seen in years and just found out about now" and when they show up, Kaito and Conan immediately lock eyes and do the spider-man pointing meme or something.

Shinichi/Conan will immediately guess that Kaito is his long-time arch rival and Kaito's internally screaming, just, "OH SHIT OH FUCK ARE YOU KIDDING ME WHAT THE HELL" and wonder why the world has it out for him.

In the Phantom Thief Twins AU... since they were basically raised with 4 parents, so they have different names for their different moms and dads? Like Dad and Papa? Or is it just something like. Dad and Dad 2. It's not consistent tho, Dad 2 is the one they like less at any given moment.

Oh yea lol it is kind of both…they have different names for each parent, but yusaku (perpetually on thin ice due to being a detective) is always called formally as “father.” Except for when they’re especially mad at him, they call him “uncle yusaku,” since in public, he’s their uncle.

Some thoughts

In Gosho's Q&A, he stated that Mitsuhiko is actually smarter than Shinichi was when he was little (pretty impressive!). And from there I started to wonder...

Do you think Shinichi is smarter than Yusaku was when Yusaku was his age? Does Shinichi have a chance of becoming greater than his dad is?

Shinichi probably has more hands on experience than Yusaku did back then "thanks" to his current situation tbh. Shinichi is and will continue to learn a lot from this huge f*ck up, and it will probably not be his last, because- lbh. And imo he seems a little more proactive and strong-willed than Yusaku is... I don't know.

On the one hand, Yusaku seems like this unreachable god-like figure who will frustratingly stay that way... But on the other hand- I'm hopeful it will not always be like that?
