never watched the good doctor n never plan to. so maybe not good person talk about this. but never plan to watch it because in fact kinda hate it (mainly because once someone be ableist about high support needs autism n excuse it using shaun & say how they know what HSN is because they call shaun is, n quoting, “very high support needs” n he very. much. not. but anyway) — so this also give weight to what am going say
do see how people make fun of shaun (main character). like “i am a surgeon/sturgeon” memes n so much more. my favorite show house md & keep especially see meme compare house with sean autism to make fun of shaun—make fun of irony of “shaun be explicit autistic but bad autism representation & house not supposed to be / not explicit (depend on interpretation) autistic but somehow way better autism rep than shaun” situation. like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[id: two meme compare sean with house about autism.
1: left side is shaun screaming/meltdown in “i am surgeon” scene with “bad autism rep” write on top. right side house in prison suit with “good autism rep” write on top.
2: twitter screenshot from rooster @/ househiscane. left is picture of shaun n have “autistic doctor” non capitalized on top. right is picture of house with stereo n “AUTISTIC doctor” on top, with “AUTISTIC” in all caps. at time of screenshot, have 648k views.
end id]
n again, never watched the good doctor. so maybe in show there truly part where not great n ableist n problematic autism rep. BUT.
from all these memes. n all these people justify how they hate sean how them make fun of shaun is okay. don’t see evidence for how shaun & show represent autism in some truly problematic way.
instead. see visibly autistic person. see people describe trait of visibly autistic person. see people make fun of visibly autistic traits. see a visibly autistic and low support needs person.
see same rhetoric used by non autistic AND AUTISTIC people to make fun of n be ableist to me, visible autistic (high support needs) person. that am embarrassing. that am stereotype. that “no autistic person act like this.” that “you make me embarrassed be autistic.” that am make autistic people look bad. the r word.
every single one of those thing, have heard it also be use call shaun.
versus. house, he’s asshole, he’s visibly asshole, n because of that he’s dynamic he’s well rounded. but he’s not visibly autistic.
n so suspect in big part, or even, entire unspoken point of these comparison, or meme against shaun, is because. house is not visibly autistic so relatable n thus good to audience of mainly high masking autustics. he the real autism rep. he the good autism rep. he the ACTUALLY autistic rep. shaun is visibly autistic n thus not.
from crowd that champion unmasking! be free! be yourself! but say nothing, or in this case nothing good, about people who cannot mask or be put in genuine life danger if choose unmask. from crowd that say autistic meltdowns not tantrum! normalize autistic meltdown! it’s okay! don’t record or make fun of or comment on someone’s worst moments! but make fun of visibly autistic person meltdown in public.
although should not be surprised. should not be! this same crowd that not know what visibly autistic actually is. or even not believe it even exist. same crowd that think unmasking will make them visibly autistic same way it make me visibly autistic. same crowd that think it mean just some occasional happy hand flapping. same crowd that call themselves visibly autistic because they do those occasional hand flapping n in next sentence complain about be told “but you don’t look autistic.” same crowd that say autism not have look. same crowd that permanently group autism into invisibly disability.
same crowd that cannot fathom autistic person different from them.
same crowd that bully n exclude n speak over n be ableist towards me.
like it the autism show to acceptable make fun of, it the autistic character to acceptable make fun of. it the show n character where u can let out all your offensive edgy ableist anti-autistic feelings, go mask off about it. it acceptable. everyone do it. even autistic people do it. especially autistic people do it. especially high masking autistic do it. autistic people who do it n justify it okay because they autistic n that grant them free pass.
criticize how any show represent autism badly problematically. that okay! that acceptable! that great! not telling you you can’t. — don’t doubt in the good doctor there not parts that make you wince in bad way because it speak terribly for autism.
but if all your “reasoning” for why that autism rep is. traits of visibly autistic person. or, (not applicable in this case), traits of high support needs & traits of level 2/3 autism. it’s not criticism you just ableist.
you all say visibly autistic people get enough rep already that it’s time for low support needs invisibly autistic high masking autistic women (& white—but shhh that part shouldn’t be say out loud) be in center of representation.
you all can’t even handle a visibly autistic character that’s low support needs and CISGENDER WHITE MAN.
once again. am hate this fucking show. n am here defending it.
is it genuinely bad rep or is character just visibly autistic.

Shaun Murphy x reader - the jobs we love
Tumblr media
Hi. I saw that you have The Good Doctor in your writing list. If you still write for it I was wondering if you would write a Shaun fic? If it could include this prompt 7. “You are the best person I’ve ever met, I’ve met so many people, but none of them compare to you.” from your prompt list. Also if it could be the Reader that says the prompt. Thank you and love all your work!❤️ - Anon💜
Slowly moving around your hospital room, you followed a strict step by step routine, being mindful of the furniture in there.
Each step hurt, but you had to keep practicing your routine.
“I would have to advise against moving around, you will hurt yourself more.”
You smiled a little bit, turning to the doorway, hands clasped behind your back as you smiled from ear to ear at the doctor who was waiting.
“I have to practice my routine Doctor Murphy, otherwise I’ll forget it.”
“Do you use the same routine every time?” He asked.
He padded in, holding your file to his chest, and he stood in front of you, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet slightly.
“I need you to sit down.”
You nodded, sitting on the edge of the bed.
You watched as Shaun walked over, standing in front of you as he began to do some basic checks on you.
“How are you feeling?” He asked.
“My leg hurts a lot, but other than that I’m okay.”
“Yes, you have broken your leg in two places. It is why we told you not to move around.”
You hummed a little bit and nodded.
“Why do you carry on walking around if it hurts you?”
You moved back on to the bed, putting your leg up and Shaun before checking it over, and you let him.
Sometimes you would move in discomfort, but you didn’t do anything to stop him from doing his job.
“Well, it’s my job. I have deadlines to meet, and the season starts up again soon, so I need to be ready to practice.”
“I would advise against practicing until your breaks are fully healed, you may break your leg again.”
“I’ve broken many bones.” You smiled.
“What is your job?”
“Professional figure skater.”
Shaun nodded his head, pacing back and forth as he went through your file.
“Why do you still do it if you get hurt?”
You rested your head back on one of your arms, looking as he took a marker out of his pocket, and began to draw on your leg.
“Well, it’s something I love doing. Would you stop being a surgeon if you got hurt?”
“Yes, it is not logical to stay at a work place where you get hurt.”
“Soldiers get hurt, police officers get hurt, firemen get hurt, sometimes doctors and nurses get hurt too Shaun. If everybody stopped doing their jobs because they’re scared of being hurt then we’d have nobody to help us.”
Shaun furrowed his brows a little in confusion.
“I.. I don’t understand.”
“Are to scared that you’ll get hurt when you get a really bad patient?”
“Yes, sometimes I am.”
“But you’re still here, right?”
Shaun nodded his head.
“You know why you’re still here?”
“Because I like my job. I am a surgeon. I am a good surgeon.”
You laughed softly, nodding your head.
“Yeah, you’re a good surgeon. Exactly. You love your job, that’s why you’re still here.”
“You love your job.”
“Yeah, I do. That’s why you see me every time I break a bone Shaun.”
He nodded a little.
“You break a lot of bones (Y/N). You should be more careful.”
This made you laugh, and you grinned a little at him.
“Maybe I should, but sometimes we’ve got to take the risk.”
“I cannot take risks, that is dangerous.”
Shaun clasped his hands in front of him, unclasping and clasping them back together as he looked around the room.
“You need surgery to fix one of the breaks in your leg, Doctor Melendez has you scheduled for this evening.”
You hummed a bit.
“Are you gonna be in there too?”
“Yes, I am assisting.”
“Good, i trust you Shaun. I know you’ll do right by me and my leg, you make whatever choice you have to.”
“What if it means you cannot ice skate anymore?”
You smiled softly.
“I trust you.”
“Why? Many people do not like me taking part in the surgery. They do not like having an autistic doctor.”
“You want to know a secret Shaun?” You whispered.
He quickly nodded, shuffling closer so he could hear what you were going to say to him.
“You are the best person I’ve ever met, I’ve met so many people, but none of them compare to you.” You whispered.
Shaun smiled a little bit, and he leant back, looking at you briefly before he turned away.
“Nobody has ever told me that before.”
“Well it’s true, you, Shaun Murphy, are extraordinary. You are amazing, you are smart, and you are going to be the best surgeon in the country one day.”
“How do you know?”
You turned your attention to the ceiling.
“Because you’re the best at what you do. I trust you. I’m glad you’re going to be the one to fix my leg.”
Shaun smiled a little more and he quietly left the room, still smiling to himself.
He had met a few times, sometimes you would go to the hospital with small fractures or head injuries from falling.
Every time you would remind him how he’s going to be a great surgeon, and he would ask you questions about figure skating.
It was a friendship he had never had before, you never doubted him for a second, you listened to him and let him talk about everything that was bothering him.
Shaun liked seeing you, but he didn’t like seeing you in the hospital, but he knew you were going to be okay, because he knew exactly how to fix your break so you could go back to doing exactly what you loved

"The Good Doctor set back autism acceptance by 50 years" No, it's just showing how ablist people actually are once you get past respectability politics. People are making fun of Shaun explicitly and solely because of his less pleasant autistic traits. They say, "I support autistic people" while mocking Shaun for his monotone voice, awkwardness, lack of eye contact, meltdowns, and inappropriate reactions at inopportune times. The Good Doctor did not set back autistic acceptance, it just shows how most folks' ""acceptance"" of autism is purely for looks, and stops once an autistic person starts showing their traits instead of masking until they die.

ok ok talk shawn the good doctor one more time but in clips of him have see, pretty good way show what mean by visibly autistic n “visibly autistic go beyond just visible stimming or visible aid like AAC but it about whole person” n specifically what make someone visibly autistic “am visibly autistic but for life of me cant tell you why n what exactly make stranger able tell but THEY CAN”
like what make shawn immediate clock visibly autistic even in clip he not visibly stimming (idk if he do that in show lol), like how he talk, rhythm n pauses n everything n something that idk how explain other than “gasp up n down / go up n down”. how he move arm, move hand, move body. not just socially awkward but bodily awkward motor-ly awkward. but if ask me say more, like what about how he talk make him visibly autistic vs another autistic person not visibly autistic, what about his talk rhythm make him visibly autistic. what “motor awkward” even MEAN n why some with like dyspraxia (& ofc autism) not clock as visibly autistic but some with & without does. can’t tell you. but just. is.
n can tell from just short clip. if never knew show as autism show even then can probably still tell, yea, visibly autistic

Shaun Murphy x Male!reader - perfect
Tumblr media
Male reader Anon. Could I please request Shaun from the good doctor x Male reader with “There’s no such thing as perfection.” “Yes there is. You.” from your 2024 part 2 prompt list and "Your eyes are really pretty"? Of course you don't have to write this and take as long as needed if you do :) - Anon💜
Shaun wasn’t the most affectionate when it came to relationships, he didn’t understand social cues or how to read people very well, but you accepts that part of him.
You accepted every part of him and that’s one of the reasons he enjoyed being with you, because he didn’t have to try so hard to hide any part of him.
You accepted him for all his traits, everything that made him who he was.
You let him stim, and were patient, giving him all the time he needed.
At the moment you were at his apartment trying to fix his sink the way he liked it and he sat next to you, holding the torch up for you so you were able to see what you were doing.
Shaun was telling you about his day at the hospital, about the surgery he was part of, he was excited as he recalled every moment of the procedure.
Every so often you would ask him questions about something, and he would happily sit there and tell you about it or explain it to you so you were able to understand it better.
As he talked, he was staring at you, or more specifically the way your eyes seemed different under the torchlight.
He wasn’t good at eye contact, so he’d never directly looked at your eyes but while you weren’t looking at him he found himself studying them.
"Your eyes are really pretty.” He suddenly said.
This made you pause for a moment, but you didn’t take your eyes off what you were doing, you didn’t want to make him uncomfortable or overwhelmed.
But the comment did make you smile a little bit as you carried on working.
“You really think so?” You asked.
“Yes I do. I like them.”
You smile a little more.
“I like you eyes too, and your smile, and how excited you get about work.”
Shaun leant forward a little bit as you spoke.
Getting out from under the sink, you rest your arm on your knee as you smile softly at him.
“Why do you like me so much even though I’m autistic? People never like me that much because of it.”
“I love everything about your Shaun.”
You take the flashlight from him, turning it off and setting it on the ground while he wraps his arms around himself as he looks around his kitchen.
“You’re just perfect.”
Shaun shakes his slightly.
“There’s no such thing as perfection.”
You smile a little more as you look at him.
“Yes there is. You.”
Shaun glances at you before looking away again, but the softest of smiles grace his face and he hesitantly reaches out, patting the top of his head.
He wasn’t the biggest fan of physical affection, but he did often pat the top of your head, and you knew it was his way of telling you he loved you
