The Shakespeare Authorship Question: Snobbery and Wishful Thinking
Tumblr media
Shakespeare was a genius. His plots may have been stolen, his knowledge of the worlds about which he wrote flawed and incomplete, but his poetry and his genius as a weaver of narrative threads is unsurpassed, even four hundred years later.
How was it that a provincial glover’s son born in the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I could rise to such staggering ability and translate his ambition into treasure for all time? How indeed.
This is not a puzzle which has gone unnoticed, and questions swirl around this jobbing actor with a second-rate education. How did he manage, amidst his fellows, to produce such masterpieces again and again?
There are plenty who believe his plays were not actually his, and we have no record that Shakespeare ever himself took credit for their writing in his lifetime, nor does it appear he ever received compensation for their composition, merely for his acting. Fingers have been pointed at other individuals, with more or less plausibility.
The Cadaver Synod, when a Dead Pope Stood Trial
21 Grams, Artificial Intelligence, and the Path to Robot Suffrage
Christopher Marlowe is sometimes suggested as the true author of Shakespeare’s plays, and Marlowe was certainly possessed of a similar genius. The early Shakespeare plays borrow heavily from Marlowe’s plays of the 1580s, and there is much else in common between the two bodies of work.
Of course Marlowe himself was murdered in Deptford in 1593, and Shakespeare would continue to write for fifteen years after his death. For Marlowe to be the true author he would have to have left behind a staggering body of unpublished work for Shakespeare to churn out regularly, including references to current events which had not even happened in Marlowe’s lifetime. Not really likely.
Various other brilliant men of the time, such as Francis Bacon, are routinely proposed as the “real” Shakespeare, for little reason other than their cleverness in other spheres. But there is one other major contender who is perhaps not so easily dismissed.
Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, is the leading candidate for those who refuse to credit Shakespeare himself with his body of work. He was a court poet, a sponsor of acting troupes, and even wrote plays under his own name.
Could he be the real genius behind Shakespeare?

the worst part about being in a fandom where everyone maladaptive daydreaming about what if it was good is people will jump on you for your analysis and you can’t even refute them that well because you both pulled your analysis and view of these characters from a contradicting shithole pile. You just both made it up

Pete’s Tattoo: An Analysis
It is from Act 3, Scene 5 of Shakepeare’s comedic play All’s Well That Ends Well (appropriately enough).
AWTEW is about a woman tricking her beloved into marrying her by completing the three ‘impossible’ tasks he sets out (including getting pregnant).
The full line (spoken by Marianna) is: “The honour of a maid is her name; and no legacy is so rich as honesty.”
Within the framework of KP, this can apply to Pete’s role as a trusted employee of the Major Family (his honor is tied to not only his name, but theirs). It could also apply to his refusal to accept anything less than the truth. He’s the one who goes digging through Vegas’ computer files voluntarily, after all.
This same scene in AWTEW also contains Diana’s line:
“Alas, poor lady!
'Tis a hard bondage to become the wife
Of a detesting lord.”
Which is referenced by Tankhun’s dream sequence (vaguely).
This scene is focused around the discussion of an unpleasant, antagonistic noble and his attempts to seduce a young lady:
“He does indeed [make amorous remarks];
And brokes with all that can in such a suit
Corrupt the tender honour of a maid:
But she is arm'd for him and keeps her guard
In honest defense.”
One of the final lines spoken by the King of France sums up the whole VegasPete dynamic pretty succinctly:
“All yet seems well; and if it end so meet,
The bitter past, more welcome is the sweet.”
Anyway I just thought the choice of play/line was very interesting in the larger context of both Shakespeare and KinnPorsche.
Edit: BONUS FUN FACT: The font is 'Arizonia'. It took me like 2 hours to figure that out.

MY SHAKESPEAREAN LOVE AFFAIR | Shakespeare x Y/N
a/n: this is one of the four fanfictions written by yours truly and @oflethe during my community day stream (on June 5th, 2023, using the game frantic fanfic)
summary: shakespeare meet cute???
warnings: no editing in sight, sexual innuendos, and a really messed up plot
(each time there is a “-” there is a switched writer; it starts with lethe)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I woke up to my stupid alarm, in my stupid bed. I got out and stared at my lifeless blue eyes in the mirror. Hi, I'm Y/N. Just another girl in this G-dforsaken World. I put my long brown hair in a messy bun and changed into my Paramore tshirt and skinny black jeans. As I put on my non-broken in Dr Martens, my mum walked in.
"Y/N," she started, looking exhausted "you have a visitor."
B-but, who would want to see a mess like me?? As I walked down our villa's stairs I saw him -------------------- , standing there, a wolfish grin on his face.
"S-shakespeare?" I whispered, too taken aback by his molded back hair.
"Yes," he grunted sexually. "It's me. Your new family."
"That's right, Y/N." My mom yelled. "You're useless and not a part of my family anymore. Shakespeare is adopting you."
I was so scared I peed a little.
"Adopted? Me?"
"Let's go baby. You're like a midsummer's night dream or whatever."
Shakespeare took me to the carriage and threw all my bags in the back. I sat in the front seat, trying to ignore the fact that the horse in front of us was shitting like crazy.
"I hope I never see you again." My mom said and slammed the door behind herself.
"Time to go, Y/N. Your new life awaits." Shakespeare put a quill in the carriage's ignition, and we were off. To my new life. My new home. -------------------- To a new century.
He rode the carriage into a new old age, and I found myself standing in front of THE Globe Theatre.
"So," he startled me, "I suspect you'll be right at home playing with the boys."
Yeah, I prefered boys' company over other girls, since I'm not like them and all, but what did he mean??
I would find out soon that he meant to make me into his image. A girl that pretends to be a boy playing a girl on stage. I soon became the biggest actor his stage had ever seen, and soon, I became his biggest muse. His Cleopatra. His youmg Juliet to his old-ass Romeo. Anne Hathaway was no more, in the end it was me and him- my William, my Shakespeare.
Hi :>
I'm a little demonic gremlin that crawled out of my little hidey-hole for a moment.
Random question: what are your favorite fandoms? And also— how are you? I hope you're doing good 💚
Back to my little cave now :D
Omg hi!!! Thank you for asking!! I’m doing pretty great- I hope you’re well too!
Favorite fandoms is SOOOOOO hard to narrow down because A) I love so many, and B) I often times forget lots of them, even if I love them a whole bunch (cause you know- hyper fixation).
But ask and ye shall receive: here I go trying to name everything I like:
-Right now I have just started OUAT which has been really fun to watch with some friends. So- that.
-I love Dimension 20, but I only really know Fantasy High and Unsleeping City (cause those are all that are free and available on YouTube).
-The Magnus Archives (and Stellar Firma for that matter) are some of the only podcasts I’ve listened too and I’m thoroughly hooked! I just started my second listen thru of Season 2 of MAG and I am SO excited for TMP!!
-I am a big book person: my fav rn is Dracula but I constantly switch it up. I also love Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes (need to re-read this one), A Tale of Two Cities, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Little Women, Macbeth, Hamlet, Jane Eyre, and a few other classics. I also love a bit of YA: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Lunar Chronicles, ASOUE (if that is considered YA?), and recently I read Sorcery of Thorns!
-Another hobby of mine is watching crime shows!! I’m all caught up on NCIS, Blue Bloods (SO sad this is ending), Chuck, Monk, Psych, and a few others here and there. I also love Superman and Lois on CW (SO sad this is ending too.) I have a few other shows that I’m not CRAZY well versed in but I love the characters and talking about them! That’ll be Merlin, Supergirl, The Flash- I didn’t finish the last two in that list and Merlin,,,, ah Merlin.
-Video game wise I am so behind in things but I do love them! I love the new Spiderman games though I haven’t played the second one so no spoilers!!! I am almost finished with Hogwarts Legacy and I love it so far!! I also love Jedi: Fallen Order and I have finished it but I have yet to play the second one so no spoilers there either!!!
-I’m also big on musicals! Not all of them, of course, but ask and I’ll let you know!
Well, that was FAR more info than I’m sure you wanted to know but you DID ask. I sincerely hope you’re well, and I hope we can be super cool internet buddies!
Thank you for replying to me! 🙈
Do you have character sheets for Daniel? I’d love to see how you characterise him and what kind of personality he has. I have no artistic talent AT ALL so I live vicariously through different artists on tumblr who draw their MC, so thank you for entertaining me ❤️
HI AGAIN ANON
I actually did not have a character sheet ready when you sent this so I had to scramble to make one for you LMAO I sorta based it on @choccy-milky’s char sheet since I had no idea how to make one…… Also kinda crazy how he looks so different than when I first drew him just a week ago…
Tumblr media
But erm yeah I guess I can try to tell a little bit about Daniel’s character even though I still haven’t thought too deeply about it. I’ll try to keep it brief 😰
Basic description of Daniel’s personality:
Competitive: likes to win/be the best, loves sports (Quidditch ofc 😼 !!!), a bit of a perfectionist, gets frustrated with little mistakes
Stubborn: doesn’t know how to quit, the type of guy to go to Quidditch practice even when he’s sick, needs a lot of convincing to get him to listen 😅, when he’s locked in he’s LOCKED IN
Independent: prefers to handle things on his own, doesn’t like receiving help from others, can work in a team but would just be off doing his own thing
Emotionally reserved: isn’t great with emotions especially his own, bottles up feelings/ignores them, often leans more towards being logical in decision-making situations rather than emotional
Awkward: ………yeah 👍
Lowkey just a chill guy who doesn’t gaf (but actually does secretly gaf)
As for his relationship with Sebastian aside from the canon game events, they both love quidditch so that bonded them even closer together as teammates. I think that slowly they both begin to mutually notice each other but don't want to speak up in fear of ruining their friendship and also they’re just in denial…. So they resort to just teasing each other and being like “let’s kiss each other to see what kissing a girl feels like” 😅
I’m so sorry it’s not really detailed…. Like I said I haven’t thought much about it/still in progress of building him and also cuz I didn’t want to make this post too long cuz who wants to read all that yap. BUUUUT I am drafting up a fanfic about them, not sure how long I want it to be tho 😰 Hopefully that will give you guys more info of his character and see their dynamic in action. WRITING IS SO HARD kudos to all you writers !!! If only I can write as good as I can draw 😿 Don’t expect it to be up anytime soon tho IT MIGHT NEVER EVEN BE POSTED WHO KNOWS !!!! DON’T EXPECT ANYTHING !!!! I PROBABLY SHOULDN’T TELL YOU THAT IF I CANT PROMISE IT BUT WHATEVS !!!! 😰😰😰
"Now I am alone," says Hamlet.
But he is not alone: surrounded by rapt faces, illuminated by the sun, by torchlight, or by the faint reflected glow of electric candle-power, no Hamlet has ever been alone. From the Globe, to the Swan, to the damp and dusty basement rehearsal halls where students make sweating labor; to the white lights of Broadway, to the young believer first speaking aloud the words, no Hamlet has ever been alone.
It is the presence of others that allows Hamlet to feel alone. To feel their hearts aching, to feel their understanding, to feel their inner fire burning for this story whether it be told the first time or the last; this humanity allows Hamlet not just to feel alone, but to be. To question being, and whether the awful burden of humanity's anguish is worth the wonder being human brings.
"Now I am alone," says Hamlet, and the audience is alone too. Together, they understand what alone is, in a way that only the reflection of one's inner turmoil on the mirror of another human can create.
Someone today will read Shakespeare’s hamlet and say omg he’s just like me fr. Another person will read moby dick and proclaim Ishmael as an adhd king.
A person grieving for their recently deceased lover reads the iliad and they watch as Achilles rages and rages and god how righteous anger fueld by love is so devastating that it’s ramifications still affect the world several thousand years later.
We might one day settle down and read the epic of gilgamesh and watch as a king has to accept the death of the person he loved the most. One of the very first stories ever written and it was about coping with death, and how to grieve.
We don’t read classics because they’re old, we read them because they remind us that we are never alone. That a character created over 500 years ago struggled with the exact same problems we all still have today. That even a king from centuries past had to deal with death just like me. That’s what makes stories so powerful–they prove to us that we are never truly alone in what we are feeling.
