I’m not sure what is my favourite bit... It could be everyone clearly watching someone behind the cameras for a hint of the next bit, Simon going the opposite way to everyone else, Tom Butcher fucking LOVING LIFE or Chris wondering what the fuck he ever did to get landed doing this.<3

Potentially unpopular opinion on The Larkins, but I want more Miss Chand backstory. Is this informed by my opinion that Seeta Indrani is highly underappreciated, talented, and pretty and a desire to see her have more than a minor role so I can appreciate said things? Yes, of course. Does that change my opinion? Nope.

The thought of Rod as an officer amuses me so much. He'd be horrendous and be demoted before the year was out after some big cock up allowed to happen because of his ego. I would totally have been here for that 😂
(hoping to get series 5 ep guides started most likely next week. Had a lot of IRL stuff happening this last couple of weeks. Also had a few bunnies nibbling away so might even get a bit of fic done too. ( writing it so I can't let myself keep putting the latter off!))
14.5 Villain
ROBBINS: Seems a fair enough chap, your Mr. Meadows. We had a colonel like him in eight, and he’d always hear you out. Give you the benefit of the doubt. Get it wrong a second time, he’d be crawling all over you. I reckon your chief inspector is a bit like that, isn’t he. BOYDEN: You could say that. ROBBINS: Young Skase, though. I don’t think he’s got the patience to be officer material. BOYDEN: (noise of amusement) ROBBINS: Thought as much.
“Podge” is the same dog owned by the old lady who was mugged in 13.101 “This Land Is Ours”.
McCANN: You’re stretching the rules a bit tonight, aren’t you, Sarge? BOYDEN: Seems like the rules’ve been broken anyway. Shame a nice old boy like that has to end his days like this.
This is The Bill at its best, and Matthew at his best—being a quiet, sympathetic ear to those who need it, even if they’re under arrest. Brilliant writing and acting, including from Geoffrey Chater as Robbins. An episode that really kicks you in the guts.

WPC Norika Datta from the British cop show series The Bill in the 1980s and 1990s and a recent portrait of the actress who played the policewoman, Seeta Indrani. Norika was one of my favourite portrayals of a female police officer, and a South Asian one at that - innovative for the time. Norika/Seeta made a few arrests in the series and it was fun watching her in take in furious males who showered her with racial abuse while she took them prisoner.

Leading TV historian and author, Oliver Crocker, pictured here with Jon Iles (DC Mike Dashwood in 194 episodes of The Bill from 1984), has over the past few years been compiling an incredibly detailed oral history of the The Bill from those who actually made it, including its stars, supporting talent and behind the scenes artists and technicians. The ITV (Thames) police drama ran for nearly 2500 episodes, from its pilot, Woodentop, in 1983 to its final episode in 2010. At its peak, it was watched by 18 million viewers in the UK. Jon Iles was the very first interviewee for the podcast series, and set things off to a very high standard.
In over 100 podcast episodes, Oliver has interviewed many of the major stars of the programme across its entire run, including Trudie Goodwin and Mark Wingett (above), Chris Ellison (DI Frank Burnside), Graham Cole (PC Tony Stamp), Eric Richard (Sgt Bob Cryer), Barbara Thorn (Insp Christine Frazer), Larry Dann (Sgt Alec Peters), Seeta Indrani (WPC Norika Datta); from some of the originals including Robert Hudson (Yorkie), Nula Conwell (Viv Martella), Colin Blumenau (Taffy) and Ashley Gunstock (PC Robin Frank), to stars of the later era including Todd Carty and Beth Cordingly. And many luminaries in between, from uniform and CID, too numerous to mention.
One or two have remained elusive - Jeff Stewart (Reg Hollis) has thus far declined, perhaps understandably as his departure from the series was deeply and personally traumatic. John Salthouse (DI Roy Galloway) declined the podcast but was very friendly and helpful with information for Oliver's first of two books on the series, Witness Statements: Making The Bill Series 1-3. (Witness Statements II is now also out).
The interviews are fascinating as pretty much all the participants have been breathtakingly honest; about producers and their behaviour and often brutal decision-making, and about the rollercoaster life of an actor even in a successful series. It's not always as much fun as it looks. Having said that, it was a happy cast which made a big effort to make guest stars and extras welcome, and it's interesting to note that the older, more experienced actors, playing CID and uniformed supervisors, tended to mentor the younger actors in the same way their real-life counterparts took care of junior officers.
Tony Scannell (DS Ted Roach) had agreed to be interviewed but sadly passed away before the recording date.
The Bill Podcast is on all the major platforms, and according to Listen Notes is in the top 1.5% of podcasts globally.

~Galleryyuhself~ On World Afro Day, here’s a pic of the first Trini to win a beauty queen competition with an afro: Elicia Irish, in 1971.The 1970 Black Power Revolution changed, among other things, the definition of beauty and the beauty pageant business in T&T. Within a year of the event rocking the country, the organisers of the Jaycees Carnival Queen competition placed the crown on the head of a black woman with an Afro. Although Elicia Irish was only the second black woman to win the Jaycees crown - the first was Pauline Figuera in 1965 - Irish’s 1971 victory symbolised a shift from the dominance of a European aesthetic in defining feminine beauty. For years, the beauty competition had celebrated and idealised the beauty of women of European and mixed-race descent. The Jaycees show maintained the tradition of its the predecessor Carnival Queen competition that had been created by the Trinidad Guardian Celebrations Committee in 1947.Before 1970, few women of colour were chosen as beauty pageant winners. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the British High Commissioner to Port of Spain was responsible for sending a Miss Trinidad and Tobago winner to the Miss World pageant. The first Miss Trinidad-World, in 1954, was Seeta Indranie Mahabir, a light-skinned beauty who represented the country at the fourth edition of the Miss World competition in London. The failure of dark-skinned to win the beauty queen titles was a constant source of controversy. This was reflected in Attila the Hun’s 1955 calypso Beauty Contest:“ This Guardian competition Is nothing but real discrimination ...”..The Jaycees Carnival Queen competition continued the tradition of upholding white upper and middle class conventions, in contrast to the black and working class aesthetic, promoting a Eurocentric archetype of the ideal woman. The 1970 Black Power Movement revolutionised the psyche of the country that had experienced more that 400 years of colonial rule. In 1971, a black woman was given the Jaycees Carnival Queen crown. Ironically, it was also the final year of Jaycees Carnival Queen competition. Elicia Irish went on to marry Colin Mayers, Barbados’ consul general in Miami.

More face claims, this time for Jess!Cassandra in my StarStruck AU.
In the top left, we have Seeta Indrani from the OLC, and to her right we have Summer Strallen from the 2003 UK/European Tour. Bottom row is Melissa Rae Mahon from the Broadway closing cast in 2000, and then Eva Kosmowski in the middle and far right from the US Tour 5.
A bit more variety this time around, with four face claims rather than two like last time, and all from (mostly) distinctly different production styles compared to my picks for Chris!Demeter, which are both from Broadway style productions. This is mostly because I have a less clear idea of what Jess!Cassandra should look like, as my image of her in my head is rather broad.
On one hand, I want a somewhat youthful looking face, that matches with Jessica’s face, and that also matches with her sometimes immature mannerisms. But on the other hand, I also want a tall, elegant, maybe even slightly intimidating looking Cass with a mature outlook on life, that matches with, well, Cassandra’s general demeanor. But overall, I want a Cass who can appear young and maybe a bit on the softer side, but has the full capacity to chew someone out.
So, of course, with all these conflicting ideas I have, it was rather difficult for me to scope out the ideal face claim, so I just went with the Cassandras who felt like they had the right vibe. I think I wound up leaning more towards the soft/youthful look, but still with hints of sass and attitude. They’re not ideal (I mean, I don’t even have a proper picture of Melissa, she just had the right energy to me), but I’m pretty happy with these picks overall. They feel like a good counter to my Chris!Demeter.

Part 2
Two of the most attractive men ever, Bodie and Doyle (don't @ me).
VHS (RIP).
Robert Lowth, a massive dick.
Tom Robinson, a massive LGBT+ activist (as well as an activist for so many other things) and musician who everyone needs to listen to right now.
Bernie Wolfe the Canadian businessman.
My dog Geordie, named after Geordie Keating from Grantchester and not after Geordie Shore bc I actually have taste. He is not a good boy, he is the devil incarnate, but my name suggestion of Damien was vetoed.
The only football player I know, Emlyn Hughes.
Eddie the Seagull Edwards.
These two casts of The Bill (and everyone else up until 2002 including all the guest actors).
Back ish row, left to right: Larry Dann (a fucking legend along with his fellow sergeants, who I will get to), Colin Blumenau (not actually Welsh), Mark Wingett (was in Quadrophenia and has a brother), Jon Iles (the one who was in an episode of To the Manor Born), Robert Hudson (Yorkshire, one of my favourites. Nicknamed Yorkie, which is partly where my own nickname comes from) and Chris Ellison (Frank Burnside, alias Tommy).
Front ish row, left to right: Roger Leach (the second sergeant, Australian. Was in an episode of Shoestring and played a Tom Robinson song), Mark Powley (his daughter Bel was in M.I. High which is pretty cool I guess), Jeff Stewart (another legend. Love Reg Hollis and his magic tricks and poppadoms), Kelly Lawrence (kind of just disappeared with no explanation), Kevin Lloyd (played Tosh, not really much else to say. The fact that he played Tosh should be enough, and if you don't know what I'm on about, watch the fucking Bill), Barbara Thorn (the first female Inspector on the show and a fucking badass), Tony Scannell (I thought he was Welsh but he's actually Irish) and Trudie Goodwin (I don't really like June Ackland, sorry, but Trudie is actually lovely and she's been on Pointless a few times).
Back row, left to right: Huw Higginson (Dennis Waterman is his father in law), Martin Marquez (father of Karen from Outnumbered), Stephen Beckett (is cool but idrk much about him for some reason), Graham Cole (plays Tony Stamp, one of the most iconic characters. Basically big brother to everyone, plays lots of practical jokes on his colleagues along with his boyfriend Dave and loves a doughnut), Iain Fletcher (his character is awful but I kinda like him) and Jeff Stewart again.
Middle row, left to right: Seeta Indrani (plays a badass female officer who doesn't take shit from anyone. I love her), Kerry Peers (saw her live and never even knew about it. Pretty pissed off tbh), Lisa Geoghan (gets messed around by a few of the lads but is looked after pretty well by my favourite character Andrew Monroe. She's sweet and a badass at the same time), Robert Perkins (hate to say it, but I feel like Ray Steele is a bit of a non entity. Robert is pretty cool though), Tom Butcher (people don't really like his character Steve, and I can see why, but he's really good with children and I think he's adorable. Tom Butcher has also been in Doctors), Louise Harrison (is obsessed with Elvis), Andrew Mackintosh (basically got the job bc they needed a Scottish 26 year old who could play the clarinet. He's actually from Pennsylvania. His music is damn cool), Tony O'Callaghan (his character is a dick but you love to hate him), Lynne Miller (I love her character so much and the way they killed her off was just rude), Tom Cotcher (he's also Scottish and was in a good episode of Tales of the Unexpected, but I won't tell you which. He does art now), Andrew Paul (plays Dave Quinnan, Tony's boyfriend. Don't even bother to tell me they're not together because I'll block you.) and Mary Jo Randle (plays another character I adore, Jo Morgan. They had her shot and I fucking cried and I'm still not over it. Same goes for Viv Martella, who for some reason is in neither of these photos).
Front Row (pretty much all the bigwigs) left to right: Mark Wingett again, Kevin Lloyd again, Gary Whelan (I swear he was in a Tango advert with a guinea pig), Simon Rouse (the one I have a framed photo of. He plays Andrew Monroe's husband in this and they're always bickering but they love each other really, and he also was in Doctor Who: Kinda playing unhinged Hindle. Apparently he had a naked portrait of himself which was painted by his wife up on his dressing room wall when he was in The Bill), Ben Roberts (his character Derek was killed by a firebomb bc some bitches wanted to have an affair on police time. He just wanted to eat his sandwich in peace! His fandom wiki doesn't list Brownlow as a friend, but Brownlow's lists him. I think they had a tiff.), Peter Ellis (played Brownlow, the Superintendent at Sun Hill for ages. Kept stopping Derek from getting promotion bc he couldn't bear to lose him, but eventually Derek just went behind his back to get a new job. Peter Ellis was the reason Colin Tarrant got into acting, which I love, but it also makes me sad), Philip Whitchurch (was Tyler in My Hero and believe me, this is a hell of a different role. Didn't like his character in The Bill until his last few episodes, and then I wish he'd stayed), Shaun Scott (apparently Canadian and a pretty good actor. Played a criminal a few times before becoming Chris Deakin, who was a bit of a weak character and not really worth having in there imo), Eric Richard (plays Bob Cryer and is literally everyone's uncle. Most likely had an affair with Roger Leach's Tom Penny at some point and they're still the closest friends I've ever seen. The third sergeant in the holy trinity and very likeable), Trudie Goodwin again and Colin Tarrant (plays Andrew Monroe, Jack Meadows' husband and everyone's dad and my favourite character in the whole programme. Still can't watch his last episode bc they killed him off, but we never actually see a body, so I refuse to believe he died. Colin used to be a teacher and was in The Rainbow with Imogen Stubbs, and when he went back to the school the day after it was on TV, the kids were wondering why tf he was still there. He wasn't in that much otherwise, and he died in 2012, but I love him with all my heart. He is literally one of my favourite actors and I will talk about him all day if given half a chance).
Anyway, please take those facts about the cast of the Bill with a pinch of salt bc I may not have remembered them right or whatever. I read things once and then wonder if I dreamed them, which is entirely possible.
Ok, I think I may have finally reached the point of insanity, but I've decided I'm just gonna make a post of all the people who the people ik irl have never heard of.
Part 1
Just David Cook reprimanding the creepy af original Bungle (played by John Leeson). He's pretty cool, he created Hetty Wainthropp and literally no one appears to have heard of him. Apart from Ian McKellen, but unfortunately I don't know Ian McKellen irl. He also appeared in The Bill 3 times if that makes any difference.
Mike Yarwood being cool w/ a pipe. Yes I go on about him all the time and no I don't care. He's the godfather of impressionism and anyone who slags him off can go away. I cropped out Harold Wilson because he was unnecessary.
David Frost. Yeah, I know right? Insane! People have never heard of David Frost. I wonder where the fuck they've been living because it certainly isn't in my world.
Russell Harty. Watched a documentary where all the celebrities were being horrible about him and got really fucking angry so just don't.
Keith Floyd. My first memory of him was on Saturday Kitchen and he was just sitting on a rock, cooking and drinking red wine from the bottle.
Tom Clarkson from Waterloo Road.
This dog I saved to my account and named Norman. Oh, and also Peter Purves. Ik, it's insane. How could anyone not know Norman?!
Dirk fucking Bogarde (y'all, ik. They're uncultured swines).
This carrot I found.
Joint rear of the year 1986 winners Michael Barrymore and Anneka Rice.

Riding A Bike
Detective Inspector Norika Datta normally headed up Sun Hill’s Adult Safeguarding Unit, but once a beat policewoman, always a beat policewoman as this young idiot discovered when he unwisely broke into Norika’s flat while she was working from home, researching for an upcoming court case. When she heard her side door being forced, DI Datta’s basic training immediately returned to help her make her arrest. She hid behind the door of her study as the teenage burglar cautiously entered the room. Within seconds Norika had him in an armlock with one hand and administered three sharp slaps (left, right, left) to the terrified and bewildered boy’s face with the other. “He burst into tears and surrendered to me,” DI Datta related. With no handcuffs at home, the woman sat her captive on her setee and told him not to move. She then fetched some rope from the kitchen and, sitting next to the tearful and subdued lad, tightly tied him up and gagged him. The failed burglar then sobbed quietly to himself while Norika called Sun Hill.
“As I said to the guys who came to collect him,” the policewoman smiled, “it was like riding a bike - you never forget!”
