The Italian Tour resumed for their third season yesterday in Trento, and it is nice to see them back!

Wanna share some newly found Admetus x Apollo crumbs!! because I just love them and they never fail to make me go feral every time I read something about them!!

This time it's from a latin poem "Alcestis Barcinonensis", and as the name suggests it narrates the story of Alcestis. But it also has Admetus and Apollo having a conversation with each other - which I've never seen before in any of the texts, so this poem has stirred my feels (again).

It starts with Admetus calling upon Apollo to answer his questions about his future:

"If I worshipped you ever; if I ever offered you support when you came to me as a terrified servant after the gods' charge against you"

Just...Imagine being Admetus. You worship a god ardently, and that god turns up at your door step as your servant (a terrified servant) and you get to shelter him, accept him. Support him at his lowest. And this god falls in love with you and is serving you in a way that feels like he is worshipping you. ("I am myself godly, and in Admetus, son of Pheres, I found a godly man." - Apollo in Euripides' Alcestis) It is dishonorable for the god but he doesn't care, he is ready to go to any extent to keep you happy.

A commentary on this poem points out how Admetus' addresses Apollo in this way with an intent of binding the god to himself:

I'm kinda loving how this characterises Admetus as being selfish, or at least insensitive with his request to Apollo. Yes he knows Apollo is no longer his slave, but he knows very well he can still bind Apollo to him and he doesn't hesitate to take advantage of it.

Apollo doesn't have to oblige, because he has already served Admetus exceptionally well during his years of servitude. Even afterwards, he has done enough favours for Admetus - helped him get a wife, saved him from Artemis' wrath. But of course, he still comes to do him yet another favour. It's very fitting that their story is used as an example for servitium amoris (slavery of love) by other poets like Ovid and Tibullus. Despite being free, in his heart he's still a slave to Ademtus' love. Maybe that's why Apollo lets himself get easily bound when Admetus requests for it. He probably knows that this is not entirely fair, but he still answers it because perhaps everything he has done so far is still not enough for him (or perhaps yielding to Admetus' requests has become a fond habit of his)

Back to the poem, this is Apollo's answer to Admetus:

"I grieve for you, but I must tell you the truth. Death is pressing upon you."

Apollo says he is already grieving for Admetus. He must have known that for a while huh. For how long has he been mourning Admetus in secret? :')

He not only answers the questions, but also goes beyond by letting Admetus know how to escape death - something Admetus hadn't asked for (but that probably would have been Admetus' next request). It seems like Apollo is just as desperate to save Admetus as Admetus is to save himself, and maybe he was waiting for the day Admetus would selfishly ask this of him.

Admetus has to find someone to die in his place, so that he can live longer. Given how in Ovid's poem Apollo wishes to renounce his godhood so that he could die with Hyacinthus, I don't think it would be a stretch to imagine that if it was possible, Apollo would have given his years (at least some of his years) to Admetus. Instead, Apollo tells him to ask his parents, wife and children. Where both his parents refuse, Alcestis gladly agrees to die in her husband's place.

Alcestis agrees to die, first and foremost because it will bring her glory. She will be praised and remembered for being a pious wife. And she will not have to live the life of a widow. That doesn't make her sacrifice any less noble or selfless at all...

But the thing is, while both Apollo and Alcestis go out of their way to save Admetus, Alcestis' act of saving her husband brings her glory and honor, but Apollo's part in saving Admetus only brings him dishonor and scorn from other gods. But that doesn't stop Apollo from still trying to do something for Admetus, to save him in whatever way possible. In Alcestis, Apollo even tries to save Alcestis by negotiating with Thanatos. All for the sake of Admetus.

Like just how much can a god love a mortal?

(this was posted Dec 2021 in the toa discord but I finally found it again cause my brain wouldn't stop looking for it) it's basically some timeline digging I did. I know other toa fans have done their own timelines so I wanna crosscheck. I only put 1-2 hours into this and it was a long time ago.

Ok I've dated the ademtus and apollo thing to before troy fell in 1200BCE, since ademtus' son, Eumelus, was in the trojan war (greek side). If we assume he is pretty young to fight in the war(20-40), then we can date the apollo ademtus thing to maybe 50-60 years before? But king laomedon, who was the king that apollo and Poseidon served, was the father of king priam who was an old man by the trojan war. So if king priam is like 60-70, we can assume that apollo served under laomedon around 80 years ago. Which makes sense because heracules was around for both laomedon and also to save adetmus' wife. But this means that apollo got turned mortal twice in the span of like 30 years and then 50 years later had to listen to zeus and let troy fall due to fate and lost his two sons.

It also means that the failed rebellion happened first, then apollo becomes a god, jives for like 15 years and then has that drama with ascelpusis mom, has a kid called ascelpius who dies at 14-15 to zeus, and then he gets turned mortal again.

If Hya is a prince of sparta (founded in 900BCE) and we could say he lived at it's peak (around 500 BCE), which means apollo met hya maybe 700 years after the trojan war.

And then around 900 years later Rome falls.

A (rough) play-by-play of Gold’s battle with Red on Mt. Silver.

Homura vs Pikachu  Pikachu won. Surprised Gold by destroying the Houndoom with a point-blank Surf after flooring her with a Brick Break. She got off a nasty Fire Fang and two Crunches before she went down to that though.

Winnie vs Pikachu Winnie won after some fierce CQC with the already winded and injured Pikachu.

Winnie vs Snorlax  Winnie won after managing to leverage the behemoth’s own Body Slam with Strength to bring him to the ground and batter him down with Close Combats. It was rough.

Winnie vs Blastoise Blastoise won. Winnie didn’t stand a chance against that sort of fire power with the state he was in - especially not when Red had the turtle use Shell Smash. Opal vs Blastoise Draw. Gold withdraws her after she manages to get some damage in, but takes a nasty Ice Beam that does massive damage in return.

Admetus vs Blastoise Draw. Ademtus gets off a Thunderbolt or two before the Blastoise nails him with a Aura Sphere, dealing severe damage. Blastoise is on his last legs. Red withdraws him as Gold does the same with the Persian.

Claude vs Venusaur Claude wins. The Machamp barely outdamages her potent regeneration and nails her with a final Rock Slide to finish it. Gold withdraws him. Admetus vs Espeon Espeon wins. Admetus is swiftly taken down by the psychic type. Mojo vs Espeon Mojo wins, managing to catch the Espeon with a Crunch attack that takes her out of the fight. He’s nailed by some pretty nasty psychics that throw him into walls though.

Mojo vs Blastoise Mojo wins simply by dint of Blastoise being so battered. Gold withdraws him.

Claude vs Charizard Charizard wins, beating down the Machamp with attacks from the air. He lands a Rock Slide that briefly traps one of the giant’s wings under a snowbank, letting Gold bring out his next before he can get back airborne. Opal vs Charizard Charizard wins, but its a fierce battle on the wing, even as battered as she is. Opal manages to keep ahead of the Charizard and wear him down with her speed for only so long before the combination of hail and a well-aimed flamethrower send her slamming into the mountainside.

Mojo vs Charizard Mojo wins. Its easily the most brutal fight of the entire thing and came down to the wire, with Mojo being absolutely hammered by Charizard’s attacks. Mojo, with the last bit of strength he has, latches onto Charizard’s shoulder, drags him into the snow and pummels him with Liquidations until the dragon stops fighting.

okay i actually always used to prefer apollo with admetus compared to apollo with hyacinthus- but i reread the myth now and actually ademtus kinda.. kinda sucked? he straight up went and asked his OWN parents to die for him just because he wasn't ready to die. and then his wife died for him instead. wtf?

i take it all back.. hyacinthus rules!!

Top six etruscan vase paintings :)

OKAY ELIJAH I’m going to restrict this to vases actually painted by Etruscans as opposed to Greek vases found in Etruscan tombs.

And you said top 6 but I’m just doing the 4 which I have on my computer right now, sorry!

4.This Etruscan red-figure vase by the Tumurca group is gorgeous- this side shows a death demon and some women who seem to already be in the underworld / journeying to is as guarded/directed by an Etruscan demon.

And This side shows Ajax sacrificing a Trojan prisoner of war with another Etruscan death deity and his skirt is INCREDIBLY short. Love the team-up w/ Etruscan death deities on both sides, the way the iconography connects throughout the vase and reflects Etruscan artistic trends in, say, the Francois tomb, which shows Achilles doing the same thing.

THIS Etruscan red-figure vase featuring Ajax and Tekmessa because I think it’s the only time I’ve seen her on a vase! Normally the Etruscan Ajax is either actively committing suicide or sacrificing/killing Trojan prisoners with or w/o Achilles (as pictured on a previous vase) but this one shows him with her, and she looks like a beautiful Etruscan noblewoman.. love it.

This Etruscan red-figure vase of Alcestis and Ademtus is one of my favorite vases ever made; here, Etruscan artists depict Alcestis and Admetus in a pose familiar to Etruscan depictions of married couples (see: couples on sarcophagi). Etruscan death demons are on either side emphasizing the marriage-death Linkage in this myth + Etruscan society in General.

1. This red-figure vase of Achilles pursuing Troilos is genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of ancient art. There’s so much movement and subtlety in the painting. Look first at the scene where Achilles approaches Athena / is told to kill troilos: look at the detail in their hair, in their clothes, the realistic curvature of their limbs!

It’s even more apparent in this scene of Troilos and his horse: the use of shading to create the appearance of muscles beneath the skin, the subtlety and definition and lifelike rendering of dynamic poses are so breathtaking. I love this vase so much and it’s so uniquely Etruscan because Greek red-figure pottery really isn’t quite like this. 

LOOK HOW GOOD THAT HORSE IS! the contrast between the thick black outlines and the gentle darker orange delineating shading hatches… incredible. love etruscan art so much.

Eros and Psyche - fucked up by arrows but they are actually in love??? Happily married and in love??? No kidnapping, forcing whatever?? (And every love story is brought about by Eros shooting his arrows, so that's there no matter what story)

Ares and Aphrodite: Aphrodite gets divorced and is in an open relationship with Ares (ALSO I forgot to mention - Hepheastus and Aglaea who are also happily married)

Orpheus and Eurydice - ends in a tragedy but really shows you about love better than the myth of Hades and Persephone

MoSt Of ApOlLo'S LoVe LiFe EnDs In DeAtH - yeah if narrowed down to probably 3 or 4 of his lovers lmao go read wikipedia or something bruh. The examples I've stated above is enough - both Cyrene and Ademtus attain longevity because Apollo loved them. Muses were his forever companioms and his lovers. Here is a post that'll provide you some insight (and almost all gods have a tragic love story? What's your point?)

And here is a way Hades-Persephone look bad - just because kidnapping Persephone was something culturally acceptable and approved by her dad DOESN'T FUCKIN MAKE IT OKAY!!! Persephone was terrified!! Stop making abduction look okay!!!! Her fears were real and she makes it clear that she was not really happy!! And whatever is the case in Minthe's story, it proves that Hades and Persephone were not monogamous and loyal couples, yes? That was my fuckin point. Hades-Persephone is not totally non-problematic and perfect, in spite of all the efforts you're putting into making it look so.

CATS CHARACTER BIOS 


Admetus/Plato - One of the older males of the tribe, some production play him as a teenage. He prefers to either hang around with the kittens or flirt with the queens rather than take responsibility like some of the older toms 


Alonzo- Alonzo is one of the adult toms, of the same generation as Munkustrap and Rum Tum Tugger. He puts on a confident and somewhat self-centered front, but is loyal and takes his instruction from the protector of the tribe, Munkustrap. . 
 Asparagus (Gus) - An old frail cat who in his youth was active performing cat. Depending on production he can either be portrayed somber character who longs for days of his youth or a more upbeat character who loves tell stories about his glory days. 


Bill Bailey/Tumblebrutus- A teenage cat who longs to prove himself to the older members of tribe but still hangs around with Carbucketty and Pouncival. He also has a habit of wandering away from home and can’t stay still for long periods of time. 


Bombalurina- Doesn’t lack when it comes to self-confidence and is very direct about her feelings toward the other cats. She is extremely flirtatious and seems to love being the center of attention. Although Bombalurina can come across as somewhat superficial, she has a protective side shown towards Demeter, who rarely leaves her side, and the female kittens, who in turn seem to look up to her. 
 Bustopher Jones- A fat upper-class cat with a “fastidious black coat and white spats”. Respected by all, he is a man of leisure who frequents gentlemen’s club for their fine dining. 


Carbucketty- A teenage troublemaker. He spend most of the show engaging in playful and mischievous antics often being scolded by the older cats .If the production doesn’t use Pouncival as a separate character he can be portrayed as a kitten. 


Cassandra- An elegant and aloof brown pointed queen. She is often seen as wanting to be separate from the tribe’s members.However she will occasionally flirt with some the older toms 


Coricopat- The male twin who is able to sense changes in the atmosphere. He also tends to be the more expressive with his emotions while Tantomile is more reserved. 
Demeter- Demeter is a very anxious and easily startled cat. She also has some past history with Macavity as she seem to be aware whenever he’s around. She is close with Bombalurina and will seek comfort from her. 


Electra- A quiet, reserved cat and the most mature of the kittens. Despite her more serious nature, Electra still has a playful streak and often joins the other kittens in their antics. In productions that do not feature Etcetera, Electra tends to be a louder, more energetic character 
Etcetera- One of the youngest members of the tribe. She is hyperactive, very excitable, a strong dancer and acrobat. She is the biggest fan of Rum Tum Tugger, squealing with excitement at the end of his song and swooning over him throughout the show. Most production that don’t include her, will be filled by either Electra or Rumpleteazer 


Griddlebone- A character in Gus’s Growltiger dream who serve as his love interest. She is portrayed as beautiful and sometimes vain character who likes to be the center of attentions. Some productions hints that she’s working for Genghis as an distraction. 


Grizabella- An old frail cats that is a mere shadow of the beautiful cat she once was. Shunned from the tribe, she desperately pleas with them to accept her in hope that may once again have the happy days of her memories 


Growltiger- A character who Gus played in his youth. He is a feared pirate character who has gained a reputation as the Terror of Thames. He does have a soft side when it comes to Griddlebone. 


Jellylorum- One of the older members of the tribe. She serves as Gus caregiver and regales the tribe with the exploits of his past. She likes to keep busy and make herself useful. She is often seen trying to bring order to the tribe, watching over the kittens or scolding them when they misbehave. 


Jemima- The youngest female of the tribe. She’s an innocent, sweet-natured, affectionate kitten, She gets along with the entire tribe thanks to her friendly and welcoming disposition; the older cats are protective of her while the younger cats enjoy playing with her. Despite her age, Jemima demonstrates a deep sense of empathy and intuitive understanding, particularly with regards to Grizabella.


Jennyanydots- A kind, doting, motherly character. She spends her days sitting on “anything that’s smooth and flat”, but come nighttime is up and about running the household. She humbly works while the family are asleep, oblivious to her contributions 


Macavity- A monster of depravity, having supposedly committed numerous crimes while always managing to elude the police due to him possessing various magic powers, including the ability to appear and disappear. He also has a past relationship with Demeter 


Mr. Mistoffelees- A teenage cat who possess magical power. Though still young at heart he does try to appear as a mature member of the tribe. He does prove himself to the tribe when he uses his power to save Old Deuteronomy. 


Mungojerrie- A trouble making cats who is partner with Rumpleteazer. He spend most of time looking for ways to cause trouble for his owners. Some production protray him as the brains of the duo often seen trying to reign in the more destructive Rumpleteazer. 


Munkustrap- The protector to the Jellicle cats. He is responsible and brave, with a commanding presence, but is also genial and friendly when not alarmed by a perceived threat. He loves and enjoys the company of his tribe, who in turn hold him in high regard. Some production portray him Rum Tum Tugger’s brother and Demeter’s mate 


Old Deuteronomy- The kind and just leader of the Jellicle tribe. He is described as being wise in his many years and is respected and beloved by most Jellicles. He is responsible for making the Jellicle Choice, choosing with cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer. 


Pouncival/George - The youngest male cat of the tribe. Shy and timid, he tend to fade in to background. He often pals with Carbucketty and Tumblebrutus but is smart enough not to get caught up in the former’s antics. Whenever Carbucketty is not portrayed as a separate character he will take on some Carbucketty’s trouble making characteristics 


Rumpas Cat- The main character of the tribe’s play The Pekes and the Pollicles. He is very enthusiastic but somewhat incompetent; he misses his cues, misunderstands commands, and only just avoids kicking Munkustrap. Nevertheless, the Pekes and Pollicles are suitably intimidated by his presence. 


Rum Tum Tugger- A self-obsessed show-off, often trying to steal the limelight and revelling when all attention is focused on him. Many of the kittens and queens are fans of his charisma, however the more mature characters are impatient with his antics, especially Munkustrap, Demeter, and Mistoffelees. 


Rumpleteazer- A trouble making cats who is partner with Mungojerrie . She spend most of time looking for ways to cause trouble for her owners. Some production portray her as the more impulsive of the two and needs to reigned in by Mungojerrie 


Skimbleshanks- One of the adults of the tribe, always looking out for the kittens whenever danger is near. When not in “protector” mode, he is a jolly and cheerful cat, often seen dancing and being silly with the younger toms. He loves to recounts his life as the cat aboard the British West Coast Main Line train a.k.a the Night Mail. He takes great pride in his work and considers himself very important, claiming that the train cannot operate without him 


Tantomile- The female twin who can sense changes within the atmosphere. Most production portray her as being more reserved with her reactions while Coricopat tend to be more expressive 


Victoria- Victoria is a young cat, the eldest of the four female kittens. She is one of the kinder and more accepting cats, like Jemima and is well-liked by the rest of the tribe. Her movements are graceful, elegant, and timid, although she is not shy around the Rum Tum Tugger. Many of her dance solo show her maturing from a young kitten into a teenager

Seeing the others emerge from the barge, Munkustrap got distracted long enough for Tugger to spring to his feet and nip his ear, nuzzling cheerfully against him. 

“Told you so,” Tugger crowed, and bounded off to sweep Ademtus off his feet and kiss his nose. Munkustrap shook his head and returned Hestia’s nuzzle, letting her hurry on toward Mistoffelees as he himself headed straight for Tumblebrutus and Alonzo. Tumblebrutus, who was sticking shadow-close to Alonzo’s side, he pulled in against his body in an unusual but not uncharacteristic demand, licking at his face and ears for a moment before he was sure he was only tired. Then he turned to Alonzo, letting the squirming kitten slink away toward the junkyard.

“You’re hurt,” he said softly, smiling so that nobody else would notice what he was saying. “Did anything go wrong?”
