Cooking With Christie: Breakfast Cookies
This Week’s Recipe: Pumpkin Seed Oatmeal Cookies I like a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. However, occasionally, I need to run out the door in haste — hence my quest to bake an appropriately healthy oatmeal cookie! Thus, my fascination with oatmeal cookies. One reason I enjoy futzing with Betty Crocker recipes is they’ve been tested and refined over so many years that you can change and swap…

It's a great thrill and privilege this episode to welcome multi-talented actor, writer and music artist, Andrew Mackintosh, who carved his own special niche in British television history as Detective Sergeant Alistair Greig, a key character in over 300 episodes of one of the most successful and influential television dramas of all time, The Bill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But as we discover, there's so much more to his varied career, encompassing acting, music and writing. We learn about Andrew's current project, the Apple Top 40 fiction podcast, Letter From Helvetica, talk about his early life and how his professional journey in music and acting began, and he shares with us some of his creative influences.
We explore his continuing musical collaboration with Joe Dooley, and get to grips with some general acting and career matters, including authenticity in casting, accents, received pronunciation and the art of speech, and the mixed blessing of being in a long-running series. We also discuss opportunities for mature actors and, inspired by an unstoppable generation of rock and roll performers, if perceptions of age are evolving in a positive way within the arts and beyond.
Our companion webpage for this episode has some additional career details, images, links and recommendations for further reading, viewing and listening:

Andrew with fellow luminary of The Bill, Natalie Roles (DS Debbie McAllister). Both star in the hit fiction podcast created and written by Andrew, Letter From Helvetica, which can be streamed free from wherever you get your podcasts.
Very special thanks to Andrew, and to the producer of The Bill Podcast and Letter From Helvetica, Oliver Crocker, for making this episode possible.

Just had a random thought idea for a Homestuck au: instead of the beta kids swapping places with their guardians, they end up swapping places with the trolls that were killed during murderstuck (with the tolls ending up as humans in a more urban fantasy style setting). For example, Feferi becomes the next heiress to the Betty Crocker Corporation, Eridan becomes an intern at Crocker Corp, Eridan and Nepeta are training under the tutelage of “Old Man Strider”, and Vriska and Tavros are castaways living on the same island as Jake Harley, being taken under his wing as his apprentices. As for the Beta Kids, John becomes a blue blood (though arguably the nicest blue blood seen so far, wanting to become a comedian in an honest way), Rose is is mutant lavender blood (a potential mutation that occurs among violet bloods and fuchsia bloods), Dave is a gold blood who moonlights as a vigilante, and Jade is an olive blood who acts as a lusus caretaker.

Air's End-of-Year Youtube Video Rec-List Round-Up
In light of recent events and also because I wanted to, I have put together a rec list of various (mostly longform) videos that I've enjoyed this year. Not all of these videos were released this year, however-- I just happened to see them for the first time in 2023. For readability and quality of life purposes, I have put this list under a readmore and divided the videos up by category, then creator, which means that some youtube channels might appear in multiple categories
I reserve the right to edit this later as I remember more videos, but I feel comfortable publishing it as is, considering it has almost 100 videos on it at this point

BAKUGOU HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
_*_ DISCLAIMER! The following content mentions: Fem reader, black/brown reader, chubby reader, cussing, and this shit is everywhere, mostly abt food and his taste for it Bakugou headcanons
★ First things first right off the bat I think Bakugou likes women of color
★ Like, black and brown women? that's all you needed to say
★ Especially thick or chubby girls (what can I say, he's got good taste)
★ Thinks stretchmarks are the cutest thing a woman could have
★ We all know he's a chef, but I think he sucks at baking 100%
★ Would do some fucked up shit like using olive oil in cake batter or burning betty crocker cake mix (if you can bake, he'll only eat your baking and that's it.)
★ Hates overly sweet frosting, like REFUSES to eat it will scrape off the chunk of cake that touched it and be done with it.
★ Hates cake even more if it's dry as shit, cause then he's to drink water or milk, and water with cake is disgusting, and milk just grosses him out.
★ Does like Red velvet cake with whipped cream instead of frosting
★ Listens to R&B when he's sad as shit. Like, I'm talking 3am, I don't wanna sleep cause I'll have to wake up for tomorrow, so instead I'll read a romance novel sad.
★ I also feel like he likes fried sushi or California roll sushi because they don't traditionally have that in Japan and he thinks the American twist to it is cool
★ Or he'd think it atrocious and not want it ever again. There is no in-between
★ When it comes to dating, he doesn't pay attention much, like if it's meant to really happen for him, it'll happen, but if not, then oh well.
★ However, don't expect him to make the first move. If he has to, he's gonna have to be drunk off his ass.
★ I feel like he really likes his mom, even if he yells at her (and she yells right back) because she actually gives him good advice and he respects the hell out of her and would do little things as a kid
★ like draw sumn making fun of her, or pick flowers and dandelions, or get her water when he knows she hasn't been drinking it, with a snippy insult on the side
★ He's a mama's boy, but will never ever admit it. Like ever. You mention it, and he'll gaslight you.
★ I personally think his favorite superhero movie (besides anything All-Might) is Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers
★ Likes Rocket the best, and then second is Gamora
★ Has a complex relationship with the Hulk movie, cause the movie plot was pretty good, but he fuckin hates the graphics (if u know u know)
★ Really likes The Hulk tho, cause he looks cool
★ But likes Red Hulk more, cause he looks cooler, and because he hates Bruce Banner cause he reminds him of Deku
★ I feel like he'd be a huge fan of other foods from different cultures, cause he likes trying new shit, because the same damn thing over and over pisses him off
★ It's one of his pet peeves
★ He also likes black Air Forces, because their black, and he just likes them better cause he's secretly still in his emo phase (and cause he's kinda crazy)
★ Back to food again (sry this entire thing is everywhere) but I think he would love chili fries, or animal style fries, with like, a shit ton of hot sauce
★ wants to travel the world with you (will never admit it though)

Robby's Baking Therapy #10 Pineapple Ham Pizza
Tumblr media
Hello, every birdie. Today is a recipe that I was a little bit afraid of, because of the fact that I am a little bit afraid of yeast. But I wanted to make dinner for my parents on their 41st wedding anniversary. And because we were doing a luau-themed party, we had to go with a controversial topping, Pineapple.
Tumblr media
I knew that mom and dad liked pineapple on pizza so it wasn’t like one of them liked it and the other hated it.
This was the first time I had ever really worked with yeast by myself. I have helped my mom in the past make Runzas. Which is a cabbage, hamburger inside of a homemade yeast roll.
Tumblr media
However, I did not make this pizza by myself. My younger brother, David,  helped me out. He was also learning for the first time how to make the pizza crust.
The recipe that we are going to be following is the Betty Crocker Cookbook. The measurements and the recipe itself will be in the description down below.
You will want to preheat your oven to 475℉. And grease two rounds or if you are doubling it as we did, we greased 2 round pizza pans and 2 baking pans.
Tumblr media
The ingredients that you will need are:
Flour
Sugar
Salt
Yeast
Olive or vegetable oil
Warm water
In a large bowl, you are going to mix together your flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
Tumblr media
Next, add 3 tablespoons of oil and water. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 3 minutes. Scraping the bowl frequently.
Stir in enough of the remaining flour until the dough is soft and leaves the side of the bowl. Being that this was my first time making pizza crust, I did have to have my mom show me how the pizza crust was supposed to look. My first attempt was good, but it didn’t have enough flour and it was a little gritty. Thankfully I didn’t have to start all over. I just put the pizza crust back in the bowl and added a little bit more flour.
Tumblr media
While the crust was being shaped onto the pans, we made the toppings. We had a bbq sauce. Deli ham slices, and of course the pineapple. I know that some of you are disgusted because I put pineapple on my pizza. And for that I am sorry.
Tumblr media
We cooked the pizzas in the oven, for 10 minutes on one rack. And then 10  minutes on the other rack. And no I wasn’t just doing 2 pizzas in the oven at a time. I put 2 pizza’s on the top rack and 2 pizza’s on the bottom rack.
Tumblr media
This recipe was really easy. And I was glad that my mom was able to show me how it was supposed to look. Because that is how I learn the best. By watching someone, and by working with my hands. That is how I learned how to make my mom’s Sugar Cookies. I would watch her and help her. So that when I am an adult I almost have that recipe memorized (which is crazy to think about because sometimes I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast the day before).
Tumblr media
This recipe was also really fun because it helped me gain a memory with David. We were just both new to this whole pizza-making business and we were saying that if we messed it up then it was going to be both of our faults. And on the other hand, if it succeeded then it was going to be because of both of our hard work.
Tumblr media
I hope that you liked this recipe. I had so much fun with this simple little recipe. And I am concerned about one of my fears. YEAST! I will eventually make a yeast beard, but it is scary. I applaud anyone who has attempted sourdough bread during quarantine. Because I am afraid of yeast bread, I am terrified of sourdough bread. Does this mean that I won’t eventually make yeast bread or sourdough bread? No, I will probably eventually make one. When I get enough courage. Feel free to check out the recipe in the description down below.  See you in the next recipe. Thank you
Show the original author some 💖💖💖 Betty Crocker

Oliver Milman at The Guardian:
A red food dye that is ubiquitous in American drinks, snacks, candies and cereals may finally be banned by the federal government after years of concern that it has adverse health impacts, particularly upon children. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that it could soon act to crack down upon the additive known as red 3, derived from petroleum and used to provide a cherry-red coloring to an array of foods.
“With red 3, we have a petition in front of us to revoke the authorization board, and we’re hopeful that in the next few weeks we’ll be acting on that petition,” Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for human foods, told a US Senate health committee on Thursday. Red 3 is used in nearly 3,000 food products, according to a database by one environmental health group, including Pez, Peeps, Betty Crocker’s products and Dubble Bubble chewing gum. Like other food dyes, it adds nothing of nutritional value and is used instead to add color to foods for marketing purposes. While the FDA said that this food dye, like other such approved additives, is safe to consume if done so correctly, red 3 has been found to be carcinogenic in animals and has been banned for use in cosmetics since 1990. Public health groups have also linked it to behavioral problems in children. Pressure is now building upon the FDA to ban the food dye, along with others that are routinely provided warning labels or are banned in the European Union – yet allowed freely in the US.
The FDA is making a move towards banning Red 3 food dye this is used in many foods.

hi hi!!! I love this AU so so much and I’d love to put my OCs in it I just have a quick question,,, (and if it’s already been answered, I’m so sorry I couldn’t find any posts talking about it :(( )
where do limebloods fit in? did they go through an extinction like in canon or are they just super rare?
Hello! AAA thank you for your support! Limebloods in Hswap are currently extinct like in canon They were higher than olive and lower than gold (in caste terms think of them between indigo and purple in canon) They were Crocker's biggest supporters and their abilities being used against the higher ups were the cause of their genocide

The Era of Her Imperious Condescension in Exile The Northern Wastes, Alternia Fortunately, Karkat was standing alone on the deck when Kanaya found him. That would make having this conversation a lot easier. She needed him to listen to her for once. Or, she supposed, that wasn’t being entirely fair to him — he usually listened to her to a fault. But this was something where they needed to be completely clear, because the Olive was rapidly hurtling toward the Imperial City, and the lack of contact with RAE Fleet ships was making her nervous. Sollux had been working with Aradia to make a device to hone in on the specific location of the transmission. The Captain was getting everything ready for what looked like a major confrontation — it seemed like she had her eyes set on the prize of whatever Imperial City held as much as anyone else, whether or not this was originally a transport gig. So things were about to get very serious, and she needed Karkat to know what was going on. “Karkat, we need to talk.” Kanaya wanted this to sound as serious — as dire — as possible. He turned to look at her, took one look at her face, and thick frown lines crossed his expression. “You’ve got this fucked-up we need to talk look on your face.” She hesitated for a minute. “Yes, that’s what I said — we need to talk.” “Right, it’s just… you look like… you know what, never fucking mind.” He glanced around the deck. “Is this the kind of conversation you don’t want overheard or something?” At least he understood the gravity of things. “Yes. There’s a spot near the back of the ship.”

Actor, writer and music artist Andrew Mackintosh carved his own special niche in British television history as Detective Sergeant Alistair Greig, a key character in over 300 episodes of The Bill, one of the most successful and influential television dramas of all time.
But as we discovered when Andrew kindly sat for an extended interview, there's so much more to his varied career, encompassing acting, music and writing. We learn about Andrew's current project, the Apple Top 40 fiction podcast, Letter From Helvetica, talk about his early life and how his professional journey in music and acting began, and he shares with us some of his creative influences.
A podcast content guide for fans of The Bill;

The Bill producers imagined DS Greig as a young Scottish detective who played the clarinet, and were mightily surprised when they discovered an actor who fulfilled all those requirements.

Andrew with fellow luminary of The Bill, Natalie Roles (DS Debbie McAllister). Both star in the hit fiction podcast created and written by Andrew, Letter From Helvetica, which can be streamed free from wherever you get your podcasts.
We explore Andrew's continuing musical collaboration with Joe Dooley, and get to grips with some general acting and career matters, including authenticity in casting, accents, received pronunciation and the art of speech, and the mixed blessing of being in a long-running series.

Ancient Recipes: Apricot Dessert (Apicius, De re coquinaria)
Did you know when you Google Apicius, they call him a professional chef?
Tumblr media
Given that he was the closest thing Ancient Rome had to Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart, we guess it makes sense. These apricots are a fantastic dessert from De re coquinaria (c. 5th cent. CE), arguably the best-known Ancient Roman cookbook. They likely would have been enjoyed at room temperature, but taste fantastic after being chilled. We make this at every rendition of our Ancient Food Day, and it's always a hit.
Latin: duracina primotica pusilla precoquiis purgas, enucleas, in frigidam mittis; in patina conponis; teres piper mentam siccam; suffundis liquids; adicies mel passum uinum et acetum; refundis in patina super precoquia, olei modicum mittis et lento igni ferueat, cum ferbuerit, amulo obligas, piper aspargis et inferes. (De re coquinaria, 4.177)
Translation (by John Liao): Wash firm, early or small apricots, pit them, and put them in the cold [water]. Arrange them in a pan. Crush pepper and dried mint, pour over liquamen and add honey, passum, wine and vinegar. Pour over the apricots in the pan. Add a little oil and heat on a low flame. Thicken [the sauce] with starch while it simmers. Sprinkle with pepper and serve.
Ingredients
10-12 apricots (pitted and halved if fresh, rehydrated in water overnight if dried)
1 ½-2 tbsp freshly cracked black pepper (plus extra for garnish)
1 tbsp dried mint flakes
1 tsp garum/liquamen (substitute fish sauce if you can't find/make it yourself)
3-4 heaping tbsp of honey
3/4 cup of red wine
3/4 cup of passum (also known as raisin wine. Substitutes can include cranberry juice (less sweet), grape juice (more sweet), or ice wine (if you don’t have to make this for a school event).
1 tsp of vinegar (2 tsp if you're not using passum/alcoholic passum substitute)
1 ½ tbsp of olive oil
½ tsp corn starch
3-4 tbsp cold water
Our Recipe
Soak halved, pitted fresh apricots in cold water for 15 minutes (skip if using rehydrated fruit)
In a wide pan (at least 3 inches deep), lightly toast the black pepper and mint at medium heat until fragrant.
Add the liquids: honey, passum, wine, vinegar, and liquamen. Bring to a simmer and stir until well incorporated, and the honey has dissolved. Continue simmering to cook off the alcohol. If the mixture begins to reduce too much, add water in small amounts.
Once the desired amount of alcohol has been cooked off, add the apricots. Continue simmering until apricots reach your desired texture (usually 8-12 mins).
Remove the apricots from the pan. Mix cornstarch with cold water into a slurry, and add to the remaining liquid. Stir and cook until thick, then pour over reserved apricots. Let cool.
Serve chilled or at room temperature, with fresh black pepper sprinkled on top.
Below, we served them with libum (Roman cheesecake) and statites (Ancient Greek spelt crepes).
Tumblr media
Some more anachronistic ways to serve this can include using it as pie or tart filling, mixing it with Greek yogurt, or serving it with vanilla ice cream while it's still hot (sort of like a poached pear situation).
Some FAQs
Q. "How long do I actually boil the sauce?"
A. As long as you want, depending on how much alcohol you want in the dish (we serve these at school events, so we have to boil it to hell and back to get rid of all the alcohol).
Q. "The ancient recipe says to cook the apricots first, why do you make the sauce first?"
A. When we tried the apricot-first method, the apricots fell apart and turned the whole thing into a jam-like stew because of how long we had to cook the sauce. It tasted great but lacked the nice texture of the whole apricots.
Q. "Can I substitute ingredients 1-1?"
A. Generally, yes. For our passum substitute, we use cranberry juice for its tartness, but any of the three substitutes work. However, if you have the ability to make/buy garum and passum, definitely give it a try!

1/8 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
Instructions:
Cook onion and garlic in the olive oil in a large skillet/pot over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until the onion is tender. Stir in the eggplant and tomato.
