It's always annoying when I talk to someone who isn't from the US, and they make a decent joke about the US, so I make a joke about their country in return as a fun little back-and-forth, and their immediate response is the whole "WeLl At LeAsT oUr ScHoOlS aReN't ShOoTiNg GaLlErIeS!!!" Like yes that is a horrific problem the US has but it's not a goddamn joke. If your response to us telling you "hey don't joke about these 2 horrible things because it isn't funny" is to either act like we're overly sensitive about it and/or to make jokes about them anyway, maybe you should go have some introspection about why you find horrific, institutionalized racism and/or the horrifying, preventable mass murder of children "funny," as well as why you're borrowing lines from our literal fascist right-wingers when you try to justify your disgusting "jokes."

This isn't to say you can't make jokes abiut the US! Make fun of our shitty transit systems, our "just add another highway lane" mentality, our grease-filled diets, our healthcare system, or our accent! Just leave the horrible shit out of it because not only is it just shitty, it's also just not a joke. School shootings are not props for jokes. Racism is not a prop for jokes. Stop using them like they are.

He just smiled slightly, happy knowing he found something that made you laugh - not knowing that this was going to backfire on him because you end up showing it to gaz & soap, which opens up a whole new can of worms.

a year and a half ago, i was in the throes of my Danny Phantom obsession. completely unrelated to this, i had undiagnosed OCD and anxiety out the wazoo. i was a high schooler at the time, and i would on occasion spend entire class periods vividly imagining how i would react in the event of a school shooting, running through endless iterations of different scenarios of how i could run or hide or fight to survive. my fears weren't entirely unfounded (my high school was definitely... something... and i still wouldnt be entirely surprised if a shooting happened there), which was absolutely not a help in terms of the aforementioned OCD/anxiety.

so obviously, like any other mentally ill nerd child, i channeled all these anxieties into a vent fic, which was at the time my longest prose fic ever. i published it anonymously in 2022 and got a small wave of comments at the time, and since then it's been mostly left to gather dust in the ao3 archives.

ive been considering taking it off anonymous for about a year now, but i never felt fully comfortable with doing so. now that i'm out of high school, though, i would like to have that fic attached to my ao3. it's tonally way different than my usual crack/humor fics, but it represents an important time in my mental health journey. i wrote it to work myself through those scenarios i would spend hours rolling over in my head, to fully realize for myself what a flight/freeze/fight situation could look like. the phandom was just the medium through which i decided to tell that story, and i greatly appreciate it for that.

anyways. i probably didn't have to write all of this, but it would have felt strange just dropping a two-year-old vent fic on yall without some sort of warning. here's Harmless.

There was a fucking shooting at a school nearby, and it doesn't help that my friend that I knew since DIAPERS goes to that school

I didn't even process that it was at her school until THREE MINUTES LATER!

I ended up spending the rest of my final class worrying about her, I could only think about "Is she safe? Will she be okay? What if she's hurt? I'm going to lose another loved one"

I found out from my mom that she was fine, thank God. But I'm still worried. She says she feels indifferent, I don't know how long that's going to last

People in my class are making fuckin' gun jokes too, they're joking about how everyone should have a gun

It seems like the writers chose that to make it more believable that Jonathan might be trying to shoot up the school, without considering that with the context that he's suicidal, it makes no sense.

Maybe he only had easy access to a sniper rifle?
