SUNDAY MUSIC VIDEO MATINEE “Tuskegee Prayer Band” by Robin Mackey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S919ZRJSKtk Robin was inspired to write this celebratory song after her close friend, Jessie M. Raymond, told Robin stories about growing up in Tuskegee AL and being part of a prayer band with her mother (shown at the end of the video). Prayer bands were a group of people that would walk from house to house on Friday nights to sing, pray for, and check in on the housebound in the community. They’d also visit people in prisons. It was a sacred service and a form of spiritual and social outreach. Prayer bands prevailed until the 1950s, but a tiny handful remain today. This song/video raises awareness of the African American tradition of prayer bands and sacred music which predates gospel, blues, and jazz (read more on Robin’s video notes).

The music track was superbly produced by “Irish soul man” and keyboardist Eomann Flynn (of The Commitments + sideman for other notables). The studio band was comprised of Bay Area A-listers from the musician pool of Fantastic Negrito and Narada Michael Walden. I made the video with Cottonbro Studio. Well.. that's a wrap folks! I can't believe it's almost been two whole years of Somnium! Thank you so much to anyone who's read along and gotten as attached to my guys as much as I have. I had no idea where I was going or what I was getting into when I started this, and what a beast it turned into!! Over 790 scenes 😱 I've had more fun than I could've imagined and although this is the end of Somnium, it's not the end of Oscar n' co. and certainly not the end of my storytelling ventures! Some interpret David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” as a dystopian story of futility and failure. I beg to differ. If you study the indicators in Bowie’s music, he enjoyed a spiritual quest, a pursuit of God’s heart in the cosmos, inner and outer. There’s no sign that Bowie killed off Major Tom. Instead, Bowie reprised the Major Tom character as a conflicted man, “…Strung out on heaven’s high, making an all-time low,” seeking redemption from his foibles while expressing awe at the vast potential of creation. Jack Gleeson, the Lannister we all love to hate, showed up portraying a character named "Dodgy Mo" in Sex Education.

Some non-spoiler background...

Jack Gleeson, best known for starring as the vile King Joffrey Baratheon in the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, appears in two episodes of Sex Education season 4 as Dodgy Mo, a mustache-sporting stoner who looks like he might be a pretty fun hang. In the series, Dodgy Mo is the best friend/drug dealer of Maeve’s brother Sean (Edward Bluemel). We don’t want to spoil the whole season, but Maeve (Emma Mackey) is going through a lot and needs her brother, who is spending a lot of time with Dodgy Mo.

Jack Gleeson is not the first GoT alum to appear in Sex Education. Lino Facioli (Robin Arryn) previously showed up in the series.

Anyway, it's amusing to re-imagine Joffrey as a stoner. 😮‍💨
