« I mean, it would have to be the exact same cast and the exact same crew otherwise I wouldn’t go back and that would just be Season 9, and I don’t think we’re going to do a Season 9, but, I mean, I loved playing Sansa, and I do wonder often what would she be doing now. Where would she be five years later, what would she be doing? Would she still be queen in the North? Would she be a good ruler? Would there be some other kind of terrible war that’s happened? I’d love to see it. »
— Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) on ever returning to the Game of Thrones universe. At Variety.
Queen Sansa's rule would be influenced by the rate of recovery The North was making from the various conflicts since the death of Jon Arryn as well as the severity of the winter which Westeros was experiencing.
Westeros as a whole was not in great shape by the end of the series. They managed to avoid complete annihilation by the Night King but at great cost.
It takes a while to rebuild and to restore resources. But Sansa has talents as a manager as well as political skills she developed through her various associations. So with help from a stretch of peace and a mild winter, she might be doing reasonably well.

« Trump was the worst president in American history, and if he gets in again, he will be worse, judging from the remarks he keeps making about retribution and bloodbaths and the like. »
— George R.R. Martin at Not a Blog.
GRRM created Joffrey Baratheon, Ramsay Bolton, and Walder Frey. So when he calls Trump the "worst" it has added weight. George knows a thing or two about villains.
This reminds me that the post which got the largest number of notes for this blog was this one from 2017 where GRRM compared Trump to Joffrey.
For some fun, go to your favorite image search engine and type in "Joffrey" AND "Trump".

Fan art of Ned Stark by @artfruitz
We're still waiting for news as to who will portray Cregan Stark in House of the Dragon.
If I navigated the Stark genealogical charts correctly, Ned is the great-great-great-great-grandson of Cregan. Add one additional great- for Ned's offspring and also for Jon Snow whose mother is Ned's sister.
I drew Ned Stark!

It's Halloween. 🎃 In ASoIaF there's a plethora of character inspirations for costumes.
Don't know who the fan is dressed as Olenna Tyrell, but the image comes from Threads.

« He played a horrible human being but he's one of my favorite human beings. Um, and it was a shame how that one ended – on the toilet. »
— Peter Dinklage on his Game of Thrones father, Charles Dance, during an appearance on Hot Ones with Sean Evans.

It's great hearing from Peter Dinklage. Of course he always has witty and interesting things to say. But I actually learned a few things in passing about acting in between salsas. That's impressive considering I'm not an actor and often have difficulty even keeping a straight face when telling a joke.

The expression "bend the knee" certainly existed long before ASoIaF. But since the first book was published on 06 August 1996 its use in English has soared.
Google Books Ngram Viewer, of course, only covers books. So there was a dip after the publication of A Dance of Dragons in 2011. Though because of the HBO series the expression has entered the general lexicon and is being used by people who've neither read ASoIaF nor seen GoT. So as of 2019, the current end date of Ngram searching, it was moderately trending upwards again.
The mass worldwide web, at least Net 1.0, began around 1995. That's slightly before the time A Game of Thrones was published. So there's not much data prior to its publication to compare online use of "bend the knee" before its release and after. But use of the phrase is now extremely common – particularly in political discussions. Mainstream legit news media use it unselfconsciously.
It seems to be used particularly often in connection with a certain US political figure.
Tumblr media
However, with several criminal cases facing him this year, another GoT phrase may apply to him: Winter is Coming for Donald Trump.

^^^ Yes, that’s Carice van Houten, AKA: Melisandre, taking part in a demonstration against a fossil fuel company in the Netherlands. It’s a shame that she can’t just recite an incantation in Valyrian that would turn all the oil in the world into seltzer. BTW, great sign!
The onetime Red Priestess was arrested for blocking a major highway with other climate activists.
Extinction Rebellion protest in Netherlands ends with 1,500 arrested
During the protest, organised by Extinction Rebellion, activists walked onto the A12 highway demanding an end to fossil fuel subsidies.
Police fired water cannon to try to disperse the crowds - but many came prepared in raincoats and swimsuits.
Most arrested protesters were released, but police said 40 would be prosecuted.
Among those at Saturday's protest were several Dutch celebrities, including actress Carice van Houten, known for playing Melisandre in TV series Game of Thrones. She was arrested but later allowed to return home, Dutch news agency ANP said.
So cheers to Ms. van Houten for her efforts at keeping Earth’s climate from getting worse.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has eight seasons of faux Medieval cred thanks to his character Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones. In an upcoming production by the BBC and CBS Studios he gets to recreate some actual 11th century history in the series King and Conqueror.
Nikolaj's character never got to rule the Seven Kingdoms. But in King and Conqueror he portrays William the Conqueror who became King of England and ultimately the founder of the royal line which still reigns in London.
George R.R. Martin was heavily influenced by English, French, and Scottish history in ASoIaF. GRRM may have had William the Conqueror in mind when writing about Aegon I Targaryen.
In 1066, the English King Edward the Confessor died without an heir. As if dying without a direct descendant to claim the throne wasn't one of the most chaotic things a king could do, Edward took it a step further: He allegedly promised the throne to both his brother-in-law, Harold Godwinson, and to a distant relative, William of Normandy. Harold and William weren't the only ones with a claim, either. While the pope endorsed William's claim, the resulting war of succession would force Harold to fight Harald Hardrada, the king of Norway, who also claimed the thrones of Denmark and England and invaded the latter alongside Harold's brother, Tostig. Anglo-Saxon King Harold would have to defeat Harald before meeting William and his Norman invasion at the Battle of Hastings, all in the same year. If that sounds to you like a lot of drama that could easily be its own television series, you aren't alone. CBS Studios and the BBC are teaming to produce "King and Conqueror," a show about this most pivotal event in English history. James Norton ("Happy Valley") and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Game of Thrones") are attached to be the titular King Harold and William the Conqueror, respectively. [ ... ] Historians might disagree on whose side of the story is more accurate, but screenwriters and producers agree that no matter what happened, the 1,000-year-old story will make for great television. Michael Robert Johnson ("Sherlock Holmes") will pen the series while Baltasar Kormákur ("2 Guns") will direct. "King and Conqueror" begins production in 2024.
There's actually a physical artistic link between the account of William's conquest in the 1060s and Game of Thrones.
After William's victory, his half-brother Bishop Odo was apparently the commissioner of a tapestry embroidered with scenes which tell the epic story of William's conquest. The cloth, now known as the Bayeaux Tapestry is an amazing 70 meters long. It can be viewed here.
So volunteers at the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland where GoT was produced created a tapestry in the style of the Bayeaux Tapestry which tells the story of all eight seasons of GoT. See our 2019 post about it.

Sad news indeed. Ian Gelder portrayed Kevan Lannister for a total of 12 episodes in GoT Seasons 1,2,5, and 6. The last we saw of him was when the Great Sept of Baelor was blown up by niece Cersei Lannister.
Ian Gelder, who played Kevan Lannister in fantasy series Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 74. The British actor's career spanned decades and included roles in Torchwood, His Dark Materials, Doctor Who, Snatch, The Bill and more. Gelder died on Monday, five months after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer, his husband and fellow actor Ben Daniels announced on Instagram. He said Gelder was a "wonderful actor" and an "absolute rock" to him. Daniels said his partner of 30 years had coped with his "dreadful illness with such bravery" and that he had stopped working to care for him. He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being," Daniels wrote.
Here's a scene from S05E02 where Kevan and Cersei had a bit of a clash.
