Georges Perec (La vita istruzioni per l'uso)
Tumblr media

Despite being a pioneer of abstract art in Korea Yoo Young-kuk (1916-2002) is largely unknown in our latitudes. Born into an affluent family of landowners he was able to study at the art school of Bunka Gakuin College in Tokyo, a liberal school that given the close surveillance of Korean students in Japan offered space to breathe, from 1935 until 1943. Yoo quickly embraced abstraction as his artistic language and consequently moved in the avant-garde circles of the Japanese capital. At this time Yoo was influenced by Russian constructivism as well as Jean Arp and Piet Mondrian, artists he was introduced to by Hasegawa Saburo and Murai Masanari, and created geometric reliefs, paintings and also experimented with photography.
These early stages of his career and his mature years following the tumultuous period following the end of the Japanese occupancy of Korea and the Korean War are covered in „Yoo Youngkuk - Quintessence“, published in 2020 by Rizzoli. This first English-language monograph contains a very insightful essay by editor Rosa Maria Falvo and a wealth of works from all of Yoo’s work phases. Falvo provides a brief but concise cross section of the artist’s career with a particular emphasis on Yoo’s development towards his trademark colorfield paintings: after experimenting with postwar Informel Yoo from the mid-1960s on decided to make mountains his primary motif. Yoo’s native region is very mountainous and exposed him to the forces of nature from an early age on. In his colorfield paintings Yoo sought to gain freedom in geometrical forms and primary colors but at the same time tried to capture the visual sensation of the mountains in changing lighting. Although his color palette changed towards pastel in his late work and his health dwindled Yoo Young-kuk painted until the very end of his life.
Being the first English-language monograph „Yoo Youngkuk - Quintessence“ not only provides a thorough introduction to the artist but through the wealth of high-quality reproductions makes accessible the work of a great artist.

Debut Art is pleased to announce that we now represent artist Gianluca Folì.
Gianluca Folì is an award-winning Italian illustrator who lives and works in Rome. He likes pizza but doesn't play the mandolin. In more than 20-years of his career, Gianluca has pursued a path of study, of gaze, of search for his own intimate vocabulary. He explores the connection with things, visually referencing the objective correlative in the poetry of Thomas Eliot and Eugenio Montale which clearly represents emotions through things and the breaking of the boredom of everyday life.
Gianluca's images stem from this narrative, transformed into shapes and colours by an alchemical process, with elegant momentum and modulation of the visual. The creative force of his images is balanced by a tightrope walking technique, in a happy and magical balance between drawing and color, between reality and the surreal. The arrival at a more direct code, made of synthesis and simplification, suggesting and evoking rather than simply representing.
Clients include: Epson, Plansponsor, GoDaddy, Feltrinelli Editore, Lonely Planet, Gambero Rosso, Mondadori, Fendi, Taschen, Les Echos, Il Foglio Review, Il Corriere della Sera, Food & Wine, Giorgetti Group, Il Sole 24 Ore, Jacobin Italia, Suzuki Italia, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, L’Espresso, Rizzoli Lizard, Vinitaly, Harley-Davidson, Red Bull, GQ, Alfa Romeo.

Il Re delle Volpi
Tumblr media
Scheda informativa
Autore: Fiore Manni – sua è anche l'illustrazione in copertina Direzione grafica: the world of dot – Francesca Leoneschi (art director) e Mauro De Toffol (graphic designer) Editore: Rizzoli Prima edizione: ottobre 2023 Pagine: 490 Prezzo: € 17,50
Trama

"The World through My Eyes" - Daido Moriyama
I saw this book get placed on the table in a pile in front of me in class and decided to look through it, it's a hard cover, 440 pages long, published in 2010 by Skira Photography in Italy, featuring photos that take up the entirety of a page or 2 full pages.
The photobook features Daido Moriyama's work. Born October 10th, 1938 right before WWII, His birth name is "Hiromichi Moriyama" and he got the name "Daido" from the literal meaning of his name being "Wide Street" ("Hiro" being "wide" and "michi" being "street") Because of the different ways kanji could be read, his name was constantly misread as "Daido" and eventually he just stuck with it.
A noticeable chunk of photos from the published work have sexually explicit themes, I read the interview between Moriyama and an editor of the book, and he says that many of the photos he takes are supposed to be mysterious and thought-provoking, that they don't even make much sense to him, or he has no true explanation for them, and he doesn't want to. (which is why he takes a photograph)
I did have to constantly remind myself of that fact when I wondered how he was able to take some of his erotic photos. I found out through researching him online that he is actually more known and praised for those sorts of photos, and they were the ones I didn't really appreciate too much in the book. I did appreciate these two, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved the photo of the cross-dresser specifically, and despite me questioning the intentions behind why the photo was taken, I tried keeping the artist's word in mind. I love seeing Queer history (as a Queer LGBTQ2+ studies student), and seeing it in this publication from nearly 15 years ago, taken likely several decades before it was published, makes Moriyama's "world" he depicts in his photos feel extremely authentic in its diversity.
I think his photos work wonderfully in black and white, because it pushes the elements of light and shadows to the extremes, and allows the viewer to see the textures of things much more clearly. I feel like texture for sure is apparent in the photo of the cross-dresser, and the extreme black and white difference that implies several textures is seen in the photo of kittens in a narrow alleyway.
Seeing how he takes photos of things that interest him, be it random shapes, interesting findings, portraits, or extreme closeups, it made me feel less overwhelmed by my own idea of what my photography might look like. I enjoy photographing others, more than anything else, as well as cats and the cool things I see. Seeing this book showed me what closeups could look like and how I could go about exploring it.
