At the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, after the credits, it said that "James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only". When Star Wars: A New Hope became a blockbuster, EON productions switched gears and on June 29, 1979, Moonraker was released in theaters. EON invested more money than any of their previous Bond adventures by a significant amount. The movie had the bad guy's laire being a space station, the abduction of space shuttles (something still in the testing stages during production), and the climatic battle being fought in open space with lasers. It also marked Bernard Lee's last appearance as M. It was also noteworthy for being one of the few times where the Henchman (in this case Jaws) appeared in more than one movie. The horrific true crime case that inspired Stranger Things...

For real guys this is REALLY dark and disturbing...

The movie Changeling staring Angelina Jolie is based on the 1928 Wineville Chicken Coop murders in Mira Loma, California.

A single mother named Christine Collins, manager at a telephone company, had to work and sent her nine-year-old son Walter to the movies. She never saw him again.

She searched endlessly for him, to no avail. The police were not helpful. Until one day, a boy in Illinois claimed to be her son Walter.

The thing is- that boy was not her son. She was told still to "try the boy out", despite her insistence that they had the wrong boy.

So she was forced to take in this random boy. She continued to tell them that he wasn't Walter and they had made a mistake but instead of admitting their mistake... they claimed she was crazy and forced her into a psychiatric ward.

Meanwhile, a man named Gordon Stewart Northcott was convicted of killing three boys on a chicken ranch. Apparently, he had murdered at least three possibly up to twenty young boys.

(CW here it's VERY dark) "A gas station attendant in Glendale, Richard Strothers, reported seeing a dead boy wrapped in newspaper in the back of a car."

"Other tips came in about a couple traveling across the state with a boy who was begging them to let him go."

"Sanford told investigators that his uncle kidnapped him and had physically and sexually abused him. He also said Northcott had forced him to watch the abuse and murders of Walter Collins, Nelson and Lewis Winslow, and other boys. Sometimes he even made him participate in these acts. Northcott abducted boys to rape them and when he got bored, he would lead them into the incubator room to see hatching chicks and kill them with an ax. To destroy the evidence, Northcott covered their bodies in quicklime."

Northcott was eventually sentenced to death.

The "fake" boy admitted that he was not Walter and Christine was finally released from the psychiatric ward.

Christine never found out the truth of what exactly happened to Walter. She never stopped looking for him.

Source (truth is stranger and darker than fiction... I left out some things here).

Now, I do not think Stranger Things will be a 1:1 comparison with this case, BUT they obviously are heavily inspired by it. So, expect some very dark stuff next season... (and in that Lonnie post I'm working on...)

The name of the movie that was inspired by this true crime case is called "Changeling".

A changeling is a mythical creature found in European folklore and exists within DnD.

A changeling was a substitute left by a supernatural being when kidnapping a human being. Sometimes the changeling was a 'stock' (a piece of wood made magically to resemble the kidnapped human), more often the changeling was a supernatural being made magically to look like the kidnapped human.

Basically, a changeling "swaps places" with a kidnapped human.

easy company registration cards part 1

part 2

included in this compilation under the cut are the registration cards of 15 easy company veterans featured in band of brothers (2001). all are taken from publicly available draft records held in online databases and collected by me, and contain details like the registrant's serial number, physical attributes, date and place of birth, phone number, residential and mailing addresses, place of employment and nominated next of kin, as well as their handwriting sample and signature. like or reblog if you use or save.

a note about draft registration

during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942. the six registrations are as follows:

16 october 1940: males aged 21 to 35 "within the continental united states". winters, nixon, welsh, toye, perconte and liebgott were among those registered on this date.

1 july 1941: males "who had reached 21 since the first registration". lipton and speirs were registered on this date.

16 february 1942: between the ages of 20 and 45 "who had not previously registered". roe, bull, malarkey and luz, among others, were registered on this date.

27 april 1942: between the ages of 46 to 65 "not eligible for military service". no known easy company members were registered on this date.

30 june 1942: between the ages of 18 to 20. talbert, webster, grant, guarnere, babe, shifty, skip and christenson, among others, were registered on this date.

10-31 december 1942: "those who reached the age of 18 after 12 november 1942". penkala, who turned 18 in august 1942 three months before the cutoff, was nonetheless among those registered in this period.

if you have a family member or ancestor who served in a branch of the us armed forces during either the first or second world war, chances are that you can find their registration card on databases like ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

Once was a girl, who would talk to herself. Stories, tales, thoughts in passing, of the past, future, of the sky and leaves, wind and breeze, of storm and calm. She longed to speak in a cadence. One to soothe. To heal. Doesn't everyone want that, to heal? To be somebody to someone, to have a voice like an anchor, eyes like a vice, that soften, that go warm like a bird's shelter?

Storm seeks calm. Calm seeks storm. They find a balance. But never, never do they stay still. She couldn't stay still. Her mind was a hurricane. And sometimes a breeze, sometimes a song to put you at ease, and sometimes, tight, coiled like a spring.

The calm wasn't who she was. Nor was she as much of the storm as she thought she was. Dear, she was a fire. She'd dim, and grow brighter. Her voice would get high when excited, she'd smile. Her embers couldn't rest. She'd smoulder. Then big stewing pots would bubble over. She'd speak in paragraphs, eyes like beacons, stumbling over words and not always making sense...

But it was beautiful. She loved, she loved deeply. She wanted to be loved, too. And she was. But when the smoke gets high, water and frost meeting that bright smile all too many times, it blurs out the hands, hearts, the words reaching, seeking...

She was silenced. Of course, the embers still burned. But the very things she stifled were the things she was beloved for. And she couldn't hear them.

But slowly, wet wood dries, my dear. You can't always cry. Time passes by. Wounds heal, scars fade, even when clouds pass over the stars. She was stronger than that.

She learned again to love. And though she had times she couldn't muster the songs, the words, the strength to hold on so tight, she began to heal.

Please, my dear, have patience. She is still healing.

Burnout is a dangerous thing. If you are stuck it never eases, never ceases. And things that brought you peace are no less, then, but grievous. It feels like Sisyphus himself is in charge of pulling you out of that rut. My dear, he can't.

The world moves so fast... I can't help but be dizzy. The facts and the future, like stones, whizzing, past my head, I bustle, I catch them, I'm busy...

The earth turns fast but not as fast as my head. Live, die. Fireflies. On my deathbed. I crave a rest, but I get anger instead. For injustice, for fury, the memories I shed...

Give my hands to the stars, fire for every digit. They fall from the sky when in darkness I fidget. Tear through the clouds, but then cry when I can't fix it. My brain is a void and...

I just.

Can't.
