One person ask and that’s enough for me these days!

Harvey is pretty obvious. From the moment he’s introduced, he insulting Elisabeth for her age and looks. He represents the men who set up the system basically forces Elisabeth to take the substance. He puts down women and is always looking for the next hot thing. He also clearly is meant to allude to Harvey Weinstein (a creep who flirts with younger woman and only cast them for their body).

However, what most people don’t talk about he doesn’t face any consequence for his actions. Rather the villian of the movie is made to be Sue. The young woman who is forced to adhere to the man’s expectations of her, much like how celebrities who get plastic surgery or flaunt their sexuality are torn down because they don’t “fight the system”. Harvey represents how men can be absolutely scathing assholes but can get away with it as long as someone else can be blamed.

Elisasue is such a tragic character in The Substance because she is created from a genetically perfect person feeling in perfect. In other words, Elisasue is meant to represent how many attractive young women in Hollywood will get plastic surgery in order to maintain their “perfect looks” because they know that the second they show any signs of aging or “imperfections” that they will be tossed aside in favor of someone else.

Much like Sue is made into a villain, I think it’s purposeful that Elisasue is shown as an abomination. She also represents how when women get plastic surgery tabloids and media will often attack them for ruining themselves. “They look horrific” “they don’t look anything like they used to” “they can’t even move their faces”. Elisasue is shown to be so fragile and kind and she’s viewed as a monster. No one bothers to think about why this happened, only that it did happen and now she looks bad and everything’s ruined.

Harvey and Elisasue’s paths intertwined when Elisasue literally breaks apart and sprays blood all over Harvey and the men who “made” her. They literally have her blood on their hands.

I also think it’s intentional that Elisasue takes Elisabeth’s face rather than Sue’s. Elisabeth was the perfect version of herself all along and she’s the face that Elisasue (and maybe subconsciously Sue) wants to go back to. And I think this is meant to represent how media will often compare celebrities who get plastic surgery to their younger selves. Saying they looked better that way. It’s no wonder the monster meant to represent and overuse of plastic surgery wants the untouched face back.
