For all that some are noting Vance's "civility" tonight, I think the most important thing to take away from the debate is this:

When pressed, he would not give a straight answer either on whether Trump lost in 2020, or whether he himself would respect the election results this time.

A civil fascist is still a fascist. A polite traitor is still a traitor. And a well-mannered liar is still a liar.

If you were to identify a groomer and sexual predator, the idea of demanding young girls give over intimate details of their menstrual cycle in order to play sports would top the list.

Abusing young girls and invading their privacy is just politics for Republicans.

As fun as it is to mock Vance, ultimately from what I saw and the coverage after, I think that this will probably be seen as a fairly normal debate that didn't change anything decisively.

The biggest danger is that his relatively civil performance (at least compared to Trump) may have normalized Vance to the public, and that's very dangerous.

He's a slick liar who's reinvented his entire image before, but he still is who is and has said the things he's said.

And, note, he would not give a straight answer on Jan. 6th and Trump having lost in 2020.

To understand Republicans, you must understand that they genuinely believe that it is better for children to be mowed down by AR-15s than for them to learn queer people exist.

And when you understand that, you know why they must never be allowed to hold power again.

I think there's more to it than that.

MAGA has to deny covid is an issue because Dear Leader told them to, and because they're fundamentally driven by shortsighted selfishness and spite for others, to complying with even the most minimal public health measures is anathema.

But there are other advantages for them. There's the obvious- criminalizing masks=easier to crack down on protesters who wear them. But I think it goes deeper.

Who will be most affected by Covid- has always been most affected by Covid? The poor (which in America is disproportionately the non-white, the Black, the Latino, the Indigenous), those who cannot take time off work if sick or afford the best health care. And who mostly dies of Covid? The elderly and the disabled- those who are more likely to be unable to work, and are therefore seen as "parasites" leeching off the rich in Republicans' twisted view of the world. Those they see as a "burden".

Remember how early in the pandemic, Native communities pleaded for aid from the Trump administration and were sent body bags? Remember the reports from the UK, about people with disabilities being given do not resuscitate orders without their knowledge or consent?

This isn't just about surveillance.

Its about eugenics.

wish more was being done to go against these mask bans popping up around the country. this is a complete violation of personal freedom especially as COVID is still ripping through the entire United States killing and disabling people. this is all just an excuse to expand the already large surveillance state.
