rubs my hands together like an evil fly. these are in no specific order i love them all equally. Below the cut because its long

vectrex console set (released november 1982) vector display based console with a built in CRT TV. early models were said to be very obnoxiously loud due to poor tube grounding. only had 28 games made for it. was killed decisively by the crash of 83 and later the advent of the gameboy.

2. super a'can (released october 1995) released only in taiwan and china and only has 12 games confirmed to have been released for it. based off of the motorola 9000 chip used for the sega genesis. the company that made it (funtech) lost over 6 million dollars because this was released around the same time as the playstation and n64. funtech had all development and production materials destroyed and the remaining consoles were sold for scrap parts.

3. terebikko / see n say videophone (1988 JP, 1989 US)

well obviously its shaped like a phone. how it was SUPPOSED to work was that you connect it to your TV's audio jack and throughout the interactive video you would receive "phone calls" from characters onscreen who would react differently and steer the game in different directions based on if you gave good or bad answers. fairly advanced for the time! only 25 games were ever released for it though

4. watara supervision (released 1992)

look at this freak. it sucks. BUT it had tilt controls which is more than could be said for the gameboy. could only play monochrome games from ROM and was a commercial failure due to having barely any games.

5. cybiko (released 2000)

a combination PDA and handheld console. could play games from PC download and had 430 games released (all of them free). the cybiko xtreme (a less colorful revision that failed to address several problems with the original) released and then 9/11 happened.

Okay, so as you all know by now, and if ya don't, you will soon, lol! The MJ Fam is attempting to get Michael Jackson's amazing short film, Thriller, to 1 Billion views! So, Please stream the short film on YouTube as much as you can, but please watch other videos in between so you're not exhibiting bot behavior and for your views to count. The Thriller Challenge 2 (Starts this Friday, October 20th, 2023)

With the monumental success of Michael Jackson’s Album, “Thriller,” being the best-selling album of all time, the actual single, Thriller, has never reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart—and it’s by far that has changed! With the “Thriller Challenge 2,” MJ Fans the world over plan to get Michael Jackson’s single, Thriller, to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart! We attempted this last year (albeit Thriller placed decently), but it didn't make it to #1, which is why we need more fans to participate! We can do this! So, please Stream and buy the single Thriller (only the song and not the album) as much as you can. Please only buy and stream the official album version of the song, which is on the original 1982 release of Thriller, Thriller 40, and Thriller 25—this is very important as all other versions do not count towards the Billboard for our goal!

While streaming Thriller, please do not loop the song—play 2 to 3 different songs by the J5, The Jackson’s, 3T, or other artists of your liking so that the streams are counted properly. And make sure the volume on your app is turned up. In closing, today, the artist Drake has officially tied Michael Jackson as the male solo artist with the most No. 1 songs in Billboard Hot 100 History. Now, I'm not here to diss Drake, but let us be for real: the music that's being made today is not classic like many of MJ's and other legendary artists hit records. When Michael was selling millions of albums, there was no streaming; people had to actually go to the store (and sometimes stand in long lines) to support their fave! And if you ask me, there should be some distinction between physical sales and today's streaming—these are two different eras—it's unfair to compare the two. Today, with streaming being a click away, social media influence, and such—it's easier for artists to break records. I could make this post longer, but I'll chill as I do have a lot to say about this—but I'll save that for another post. At this point, it's all laughable. It's a skewed numbers game, and artistry is no longer at the forefront. At the end of the day, Michael's music will continue to be played millions and millions of years from now because Michael poured his heart and soul into his art while battling so many things. That being said, I hope this provides some extra motivation for to stream Michael Jackson's Thriller. Let's make Michael #1!

Counting down the songs Van Halen has played the most in concert offers an interesting perspective on the band's two distinct main eras.

Songs from the band's early years with original singer David Lee Roth dominate the ranking. But Sammy Hagar earns more spots than you might expect, sometimes even with songs that come from his solo career. Even Gary Cherone's brief time in the band affected how high certain songs wind up on the chart.

Seventeen of the 25 songs Van Halen have performed most frequently are taken from the six albums they recorded with Roth between 1978 and 1984, including 14 originals and three covers. Another five come from the four records they released with Hagar over the next 10 years; three more were drawn from Hagar's solo career.

Unsurprisingly, nothing from 1998's Van Halen III, the band's only album with third singer Cherone, made the list. But the 86 shows he played with the band add an extra and occasionally unexpected boost to the totals for several Roth- and Hagar-era songs. Set lists from the Hagar years had even more impact on the fate of several Roth songs. You'd expect Van Halen's lone No. 1 single "Jump" to be the most played song from the band's 1984 album, but Hagar's early and continued support of "Panama" flips that race on its head.

The song counts are courtesy of Setlist.fm and represent Van Halen's live appearances through their 2015 North American tour. Guitar, bass and drum solos are not included in the ranking unless they boast an actual song title.

25. "I Can't Drive 55" (304)

Sammy Hagar's career-defining anthem "I Can't Drive 55" was barely a year old when he joined Van Halen. The song's momentum and popularity could not be denied, so Van Halen kept it in their set lists throughout Hagar's original decade-long tenure with the group, though it was left behind when he came back for an ill-fated reunion tour in 2004.

24 (Tie). "Little Guitars" (310)

One of only a handful of new original songs on 1982's hastily assembled 'Diver Down,' "Little Guitars" has raced up this chart in the 2000s. The 2007 return of Roth brought the unexpectedly sincere and sweet track back into the show, where it has remained for two of their three new-century tours.

24 (Tie). "Feel Your Love Tonight" (310)

Seven of the 11 songs on Van Halen's 1978 debut album have earned a spot on this list, and if Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo "Eruption" was credited as a stand-alone track, that number would be eight. The importance of Michael Anthony's background vocals are on full display here, as he punctuates every one of Roth's verses and serves as a near-equal partner on the choruses.

22. "Dreams" (313)

The second single from 1986's '5150' is the first of five songs from the "Van Hagar" era to appear on this list. Depending on your perspective, this is also either the textbook example of a song that could not or would not happened if Roth had remained in the band. Hagar's fans will contend that Roth could never hit those soaring high notes so smoothly, while Roth's fans would counter by asking exactly why the world's greatest hard-rock guitarist wanted to pretend he was the keyboard player in Journey.

21. "Eagles Fly" (328)

In order to break his recording contract and join Van Halen, Hagar had to promise to make one more album for his record label. Because his bandmates already took extended bass, drum and guitar showcases every night, Hagar would instead perform an acoustic version of this song from that farewell album as his solo spotlight.

20. "Bottoms Up!" (331)

Frequently used as the encore number on Van Halen's 1978 tour, "Bottoms Up!" is one of three songs from 'Van Halen II' to make this list. That ties the album in second place alongside '5150.' They stand just ahead of "Women and Children First," "1984" and "Diver Down," which each place two songs on this list.

19. "Oh, Pretty Woman" (341)

After releasing four albums in as many years, and touring all over the world practically every second in between, Van Halen wanted a break. So, they agreed to record a stand-alone cover of Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" to get their label off their back for a few months. The plan backfired when the song became an unexpected big hit and the label forced the band to quickly assemble a corresponding album. Frustrated by this loss of control, Eddie Van Halen built a recording studio at his house and vowed to fail or succeed with his own material from that point on. This move yielded the band's next big step forward with the '1984' album, but it also kicked off a turf war that contributed to Roth's departure.

18. "Right Now" (345)

After releasing three increasingly keyboard-heavy albums to close out the '80s, Van Halen went back to basic hard-rock guitar on 1991's 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' ... with one exception. The album's big hit single was a piano-based anthem, made even more popular by an innovative, text-heavy video. While the group had previously performed the keyboards live on songs like "Jump" and "Love Walks In," they performed "Right Now" with the help of backing tapes, to allow Eddie Van Halen to focus on his guitar parts.

17. "There's Only One Way to Rock" (387)

Hagar's 1982 solo celebration of all things "rawk" earned itself more Van Halen stage time than "I Can't Drive 55" by serving as the home for a nightly guitar duel between himself and Eddie Van Halen. You might picture Hagar putting on a Washington Generals jersey before each match, but Van Halen was always quick to praise his bandmate's playing. "He gets the point across very well," he said of Hagar in a 1987 'Guitar World' interview. "He's a soulful player."

16. "When It's Love" (388)

The only entry on this list from 1988's 'OU812' may also be Van Halen's most traditional power ballad, right down to the ending "nah nah nah"s. It was the second biggest chart hit of the "Van Hagar" era, receiving an extra boost on this list by being performed nightly on the band's only tour with their third singer, Gary Cherone.

15. "On Fire" (404)

It's not accurate to say vocals are incidental on the closing track from 'Van Halen,' but it's fair to say they're mostly along for the ride. The song exists primarily as a showcase for Eddie Van Halen's arsenal of guitar tricks. It was used as the opening number for the group's 180-show tour in support of the debut album and remained in the set list throughout David Lee Roth's original tenure in Van Halen.

14. "Best of Both Worlds" (428)

This song was the emotional and creative centerpiece of Van Halen's first album with Sammy Hagar and was accordingly performed on every one of this lineup's tours, except for the 1995 run in support of what would become the breakup album, 'Balance.'

13. "Romeo Delight" (483)

"He saws his guitars in pieces and glues them back together and gets these strange sounds out of them," David Lee Roth said of Eddie Van Halen's creative methods in a 1980 interview with 'Rock Stars' magazine. "Romeo Delight" sounds like the result of one particularly inspired round of experiments and served as the band's opening number on both the 1980 World Invasion and 1982-83 Hide Your Sheep tours.

12. "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" (555)

Van Halen built a wealth of original material during their years of performing in Los Angeles clubs before securing a record deal. "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" appeared on both the 1976 demo they recorded with assistance from Gene Simmons and the 25-song tape they made with producer Ted Templeman. Before the song appeared on 'Van Halen II,' the group would occasionally preview it for audiences on the 10-month world tour mounted in support of the 1978 debut LP.

11. "Everybody Wants Some!!" (571)

After burning through the best of their backlog of original songs on their first two albums, Van Halen proved they could also turn around new material quickly, releasing 'Women and Children First' just five months after their 1979 tour ended. This song's tribal-drum introduction and spoken interludes made it a live favorite. Hagar and Cherone never went near it, but it's been featured on every tour with Roth, including the three they've taken since his return in 2007.

10. "Why Can't This Be Love?" (585)

This was the first Sammy Hagar-fronted song Van Halen shared with the world. It was a resounding hit, peaking at No. 3, below only "Jump" in the band's singles chart history. They've played it on every tour with Hagar, as well as on their 1998 shows with Cherone. Roth has never performed a "Van Hagar" song live with Van Halen, though in the group's early days, it covered "Make It Last' by the Hagar-fronted Montrose.

9. "Ice Cream Man" (604)

After "Ice Cream Man" appeared on their debut album, Van Halen's cover of Chicago blues guitarist John Brim's song has become one of the most dependable parts of any Roth-fronted show. Like Hagar's "Eagles Fly," it serves as Diamond Dave's solo showcase each night. Roth plays acoustic guitar and tells stories over an extended version of the song's opening section before being joined by his bandmates for the electric finale.

8. "Dance the Night Away" (606)

The only song written in the studio for 'Van Halen II' became the band's first Top 20 hit. It stayed in their set list until being dropped for the 1984 tour, reemerged with Cherone in 1998 and returned for all reunion tours with Roth.

7. "Jamie's Cryin'" (612)

Long before it was sampled for Tone Loc's 1989 mega-hit "Wild Thing," "Jamie's Cryin'" was one of Van Halen's most popular songs, appearing on their debut LP and on the tours in support of the band's next five albums. It vanished during the Hagar and Cherone years but returned for two of the reunion treks with Roth.

6. "Unchained" (679)

Many of the songs on this list got a four-tour head start. Still, the most popular live cut from 1981's 'Fair Warning' has made some serious gains. In addition to appearing at every Roth-fronted show since its debut, it was featured as the opening song on the Cherone-fronted III tour. Even Hagar sang a version on Van Halen's 80-date 2004 summer tour.

5. "Jump" (680)

Hagar tried to avoid singing his predecessor's biggest hit on his first tour with Van Halen. After he spent early shows on the 5150 run recruiting audience members to take lead vocals on "Jump" for him, the band dropped the song from its set. Hagar handled the singing when the band brought the song back for 1991's 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' tour, and it hasn't left their shows since.

4. "Runnin' With the Devil" (816)

In addition to being a staple at each Roth show, the opening track from Van Halen's debut album got some stage time during the Hagar years: He sang it on the OU812 and 2004 runs. On the latter tour, bassist Michael Anthony would sometimes take over lead-vocal duties. Even after leaving Van Halen, Hagar and Anthony have occasionally performed the song together at Hagar's solo shows.

3. "Panama" (860)

Like "Jump" before it, '1984''s "Panama" overcame a relatively late start by earning unanimous support from all three Van Halen singers. Hagar started performing it at his first show with the band, though, as far as we know, neither he nor Cherone ever swung across the stage with a boombox in his hand while doing so.

Although Eddie Van Halen told 'Guitar World' "it bummed me out" that his label chose a cover as Van Halen's first-ever single, the group certainly didn't hold anything against the Kinks classic when it came time to perform the song live. It has appeared on every Roth and Hagar tour, serving as the opening number on the band's 2007-08 reunion shows with Roth.

1 (Tie). "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" (1224)

One of only two Roth-era originals (along with "Panama") that earned a permanent spot onstage in both the early Hagar years and on the Cherone tour, "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" is described by longtime producer Ted Templeman as "the perfect rock song, in a way. The guitar part is timeless. You can't get a better riff, Roth's lyrics about disease and standing on the edge are so good." Hagar would live on the edge during performances of the song on the 5150 tour, singing it while dangling high above the crowd on the scaffolding above the stage, as seen in the 'Live Without a Net' home video.

Crimes That Shocked Britain (Edinburgh)

Child Killer Robert Black On 8 July 1988, Caroline Hogg, 5, was playing at the fairground on Portobello Promenade. Only, after riding the carousel, the little girl disappeared. Playmates had spotted her walking away with a 'scruffy' man who had paid the 15p for her carousel turn. Ten days later, her naked body was found in a Leicestershire ditch.

Susan Maxwell, 11, had been killed in similar circumstances a year earlier. Police linked the cases and in 1990, they got a breakthrough.

Delivery driver, Robert Black was caught with a 6-year-old in his van in a Scottish borders village. Detectives then spent four years piecing together his past movements.

It turned out that the day Caroline vanished, Black had been delivering posters nearby. In 1994, Black was jailed for life for the abduction and murder of Caroline, Susan, and Sarah Harper, 10, in 1986.

In 2011, he was convicted of the 1981 sexual assault and murder of nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy. Police suspected that he'd actually murdered many more, but they will never know for sure. Black died at the age of 68 behind bars in January 2016.

Burke and Hare Irishmen William Burke and William Hare met in 1827 when Burke moved into Hare's Edinburgh boarding house. On 25 November 1827, an elderly lodger died owing Hare £4. Burke and Hare stole his body and sold it to anatomist Dr Robert Knox st the Royal College of Surgeons.

In early 1828, another lodger was dying of a fever. The men smothered him, selling his corpse to Dr Knox for £10. Burke and Hare murdered 16 people over the following year, selling their corpses.

The body of their final victim, Mrs. Docherty, was discovered before Burke and Hare sold it. In court, Hare blamed Burke, in return for his freedom. Burke was hanged in January 1829. Hare fled Scotland and Knox was cleared.

Murder of Suzanne Pilley On 4 May 2010, Suzanne Pilley, 38, vanished while making her way to work in Thistle Street, Edinburgh.

A murder inquiry was launched police suspected Suzanne's ex-lover and colleague David Gilroy, Suzanne had recently ended their affair. Officers believed jealous Gilroy lured her into the office's underground car park as she arrived for work, then dumped her body in the countryside.

In June 2010, Gilroy was charged with murder, later convicted, and jailed for life. In 2012, his appeal against the sentencing was rejected. Despite searches, including an area near Loch Long, Suzanne's body has never been found.

Donald Forbes In 1958, Donald 'Ginger' Forbes was sentenced to death for murder. He'd bludgeoned nightwatchman Alan Fisher, 66, to death while robbing a fishing factory.

Only, public letters of support for Forbes poured in, and his sentence was reduced to life. He was released in May 1970. Weeks later, he stabbed ex-soldier Charles Gilroy, 27, to death during a pub brawl.

With the death penalty now outlawed, Forbes was convicted of murder, sentenced to life again. He was released in 1998, only to be jailed for 12 years in 2003 for running a cocaine and cannabis factory. Forbes, 73, died in 2008, handcuffed to a hospital bed.

World's End Murders In October 1977, Helen Scott and Christine Eadie, both 17, were raped and killed after a night at Edinburgh's World's End pub. For decades, the case went cold - until a forensic review found a DNA profile, matching Angus Sinclair.

Sinclair had been serving life since 1982 for raping and indecently assaulting 11 girls. He'd received another life sentence in 2001, after DNA matched him to the 1978 murder of Mary Gallacher.

In 2007, he stood trial accused of murdering Helen and Christine, with his late brother-in-law Gordon Hamilton, who'd died in 1996. The case collapsed, Sinclair was acquitted. However, in November 2014, Sinclair was re-tried, finally convicted, and jailed for life.

Edward David Munson (born March 3, 1966)[1] is an American musician and model. He is best known as a founding member of iconic heavy metal band Corroded Coffin as vocalist and lead guitarist from 1979 to 2019. In the 1990's and 2000's he appeared in several editorials for magazines and runway shows for various designers as a result of his marriages to models Paige Peterson and Amy A.[2] 

These high profile marriages in addition to his musical success resulted in frequent tabloid appearances and widespread coverage of his divorces and struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. Despite the increased scrutiny, Munson's reputation as a "charming devil", and "a sweet dude trying his best"[3] endures. 

Since his retirement from Corroded Coffin, Munson has maintained a diminished media presence, other than donating significant sums to several projects in his home states of Indiana and Kentucky, including skate parks, music programs, and harm reduction initiatives.[4] 

He is the father of two children with Peterson, Twitch streamer NoMan[5] and fashion designer Lestat Shannon.[6] 

Early Life

Munson was born in rural Appalachian Kentucky on March 3, 1966, son of Cindy and Alvin Munson. His mother was only 17 when she got pregnant and her parents forced her to marry Munson's father, who was 25. After the wedding Al moved the family to Hawkins, Indiana to be near his older brother Wayne, who had found work at a chemical plant there. Although Wayne secured Al a job at the plant, the Munsons often struggled financially as a result of Al's substance abuse and gambling problems. Cindy left in the night in 1969 when Munson was three, leaving him to be raised by his father.[7][8] Al soon lost his job at the plant, and was in and out of jail until 1977, when he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.[9] Custody was granted to Munson's uncle Wayne, who in addition to helping Al and his family financially, had a history of taking care of Munson while his father was incarcerated or otherwise absent.[10] In 1982, Al was released after serving only half of his sentence. He would remain an inconsistent and disruptive presence in his son's life until his death in 2004.[11]

For Christmas 1978, Munson was gifted his first guitar.[12] In October of 1979 he met Gareth Ward while they were both students at Hawkins Middle School. The two would found Corroded Coffin over winter break. Munson's first time on stage was at the school talent show in spring of 1980.[13] 

Munson attended Hawkins High School, where he was ostracized by his conservative classmates for his left wing and nonconformist beliefs, interests in fantasy, horror, and the occult, taste in music and fashion, and low socioeconomic status.[14] Despite this, he was founder and president of The Hellfire Club, a successful school-sponsored Dungeons and Dragons group.[15] Munson was a Hawkins High student for six years, repeating his senior year twice, which he later attributed to "severe senior-itis," and "probably something they have a diagnosis for these days."[16] He dropped out only one month before he was set to graduate[17] to move to New York City and record Corroded Coffin's debut album, Torches and Pitchforks.

Career

Personal Life

Munson married his first wife, Heather Smith, in the fall of 1986.[18] Smith was a part of Munson's original intended graduating class and someone Munson had previously dated casually. The two reconnected while Munson was back in Hawkins before Corroded Coffin embarked on their first tour, and Smith was home for summer break from college.[19] They divorced in 1990 as a result of the band's second album becoming much more successful than anticipated. In her only statement on the subject, Smith said "I love Eddie. I don't love being a rockstar's wife."[3]

Munson met his second wife Paige Peterson in September 1993 when Corroded Coffin played Boneyard Magazine's Body of the Year party,[20] an award which Peterson was the recipient of.[21] By the end of the night they were seen slipping away together and the two married a week later in a ceremony in Las Vegas. The magazine replaced Peterson's planned Body of the Year spread[22] with a bondage themed shoot of her and Munson fully nude, his first modeling job outside of promoting Corroded Coffin. Their first child, Lestat David Munson, was born in 1999.[23] The couple appeared on a 2003 episode of MTV Cribs, where it was revealed they were expecting a second child when they included a partially finished nursery on the tour of their Hollywood home. The baby, Éowyn Paige Munson, had already been born by the time the episode aired.[24]

Peterson filed for divorce in 2005, citing Munson's increasingly severe drug and alcohol problems.[2] Munson had been using drugs recreationally since high school. While touring with Corroded Coffin he would experiment with drugs heavily, once saying "I haven't met a drug I don't like yet."[25] Even so, he maintained strict rules for himself, such as never being intoxicated in front of his children,[26] and managed to quit drugs completely for long periods of time.[27][28][29] However, after the sudden death of his father in 2004, Munson's semi-casual use rapidly deteriorated into addiction.[30] Peterson stated that she never intended to actually get divorced, and she filed to send Munson a wakeup call. It wasn't until Munson miraculously survived a high speed accident in his Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG and was subsequently arrested for street racing and DUI that Peterson realized "Nothing I did could wake Eddie up."[31] The divorce was finalized in 2006.[2]

Munson's divorce from Peterson was only final for six months when he married model and fashion blogger Amy A. At the time A was notorious for her own struggles with drugs and alcohol, and the two were introduced at a Grammys after party when Munson was searching for drugs.[32] Despite their common addiction being the reason they met, Munson was greatly upset by the frequent implication that he and A were only together because of it, stating in a 2017 interview "It was disgusting, it made me so mad. I married Amy because she's a beautiful person. I've been madly in love with all my wives."[33] Munson and A divorced in 2008 after each suffering several close calls with overdoses and other drug-related complications.[2] These incidents prompted both of them to get sober, the divorce resulting from the common drug rehabilitation rule of ending relationships with people you have done drugs with in the past. In the same 2017 interview Munson revealed that he and A did not speak for 5 years after the divorce was finalized, also in line with drug rehabilitation guidance, but since 2013 had fostered a distant yet supportive friendship.[33]

Munson met his fourth wife, stuntwoman and former WWE Diva Missy Winter, when she was featured in the music videos for all three singles from Corroded Coffin's 2010 album Disinterred. At the time she was engaged to Motocross racer Austin Andrew. Their engagement ended in 2011 when it was revealed that Andrew had cheated on Winter,[34] and she sought comfort from "the most divorced person I knew."[3] The pair married in 2012 and divorced in 2016.[2] It has been suggested that Munson and Winter's divorce was caused by the same personal issues that caused him to leave Corroded Coffin that same year,[35] but neither party has ever

October Horror Schedule

I saw a few folks around the web making watch schedules for Spook Month and thought it seemed cute. I love watching movies but there’s always a lot of inertia to it unless I at least sort of plan it in advance so...this should work well! :)

I wanted to mostly stick to new-to-me movies but I’ve also watched a pretty sizable number of horror movies so I blocked out the first four weeks by decade (60s & 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s) and then each day of the week by special category (anything goes, rewatch, slasher, ghosts/hauntings, psychological, J-horror, non-English/non-Japanese) to help make selections.

The last three days of the month necessarily fall outside that scheme so I’ll leave those as free-for-all days. Citizen Kane (1941) is frequently cited as the greatest film ever made.[5] For 40 years (5 decennial polls: 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002), it stood at number 1 in the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound decennial poll of critics,[6] and it topped the American Film Institute's 100 Years ... 100 Movies list in 1998, as well as its 2007 update. The quasi-biographical film examines the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles, a composite character based on American media barons William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick, as well as aspects of the screenwriters' own lives. Upon its release, Hearst prohibited any mention of the film in his newspapers.[7]

After the Broadway success of Welles's Mercury Theatre and the controversial 1938 radio broadcast "The War of the Worlds" on The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Welles was courted by Hollywood. He signed a contract with RKO Pictures in 1939. Although it was unusual for an untried director, he was given freedom to develop his own story, to use his own cast and crew, and to have final cut privilege. Following two abortive attempts to get a project off the ground, he wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane, collaborating with Herman J. Mankiewicz. Principal photography took place in 1940, the same year its innovative trailer was shown, and the film was released in 1941.

Citizen Kane was selected by the Library of Congress as an inductee of the 1989 inaugural group of 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[8][9][10] Roger Ebert wrote of it: "Its surface is as much fun as any movie ever made. Its depths surpass understanding. I have analyzed it a shot at a time with more than 30 groups, and together we have seen, I believe, pretty much everything that is there on the screen. The more clearly I can see its physical manifestation, the more I am stirred by its mystery."[11]
