Rules: shuffle your ‘on repeat’ playlist and post the first 10 songs, then tag 10 friends to do the same.
My liked playlist on Spotify is heavily dominated by my 9yo's selections, so it's always fun to see how long before I'm hitting skip (songs like The Cheese Tax or Rizzmas, or alarm soundscapes.), but tbh some of the songs he finds are great.
Hell and You by Amigo the Devil
goodbye to a world (slowed + reverb) by emptiness, love.nicotine (This is a kiddo added song. He finds snips on tiktoks added to youtube shorts then adds the song to our playlist.)
Carmina Burana: O Fortuna by Carl Orff, Cleveland Orchestra and Boys Choir
Killing Butterflies by Lou Bliss
Lost Umbrella by Inabumori (older kiddo found this and I love it)
Time is Running Out by Muse
Ladies and Gentleman by Saliva
Arabian Nights (2019) by Will Smith
The Rip by Portishead
Holy, Holy, Holy by Sufjan Stevens (just love the sound of this one despite that i won't usually listen to something so overtly religious)

9 for the music ask?
9. A song in a language I don't speak: I'm a huge fan of the Japanese band Fishmans; they're probably my favorite band. Their career was super interesting, starting as a pretty straightforward dub reggae band and then bringing in elements of psychedelic pop, funk, and ambient over the next ten years. They broke up after their singer suddenly died. If I had to pick one song it would be バックビートにのっかって (Lost in the Backbeat) from the album Uchuu Nippon Setagaya. Thanks for asking!

1. A song I liked as a child: My memory is generally pretty bad, but one of the songs I most clearly remember listening to when I was a really young child was Puff, the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul and Mary. 13. A song by a performer I've seen live: Bury Us Alive by Starfucker. They were my favorite band when I was like 15 and I finally got to see them live when I was 21. They were alright. 19. A song that makes me emotional: Farewell (To Mingus) by Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band makes me very sad. I associate it a lot with my grandpa who passed away in 2020. He was a jazz fan, though as far as I know he never listened to this album; just makes me miss him and the chances we could've had to talk about music as I've gotten more into the stuff he enjoyed. thank you my friend

When my feet touch down on the foreign land
I buried all my money in a coffee can
And I've been hobo skipping just to hide from the weather
Only got two pennies better rub them together
Hobo Rocket by Barns Courtney
I like it! It's got a good sound to it, the rhythm is very nice. I like the 'hey's.

1. what is your favourite song of all time? 3. if you were to get lyrics tattooed on you, which would they be? (or tell about what you already have!) 5. is there a song that always makes you cry, no matter what? what is it? 9. who are your top three all time favourite bands or artists? 13. what's an album cover that you would frame and put up in your house? 15. what is a song you are obsessed with at the moment? 22. what band do you think has the best or most interesting story? (toxic breakup, bandmates in love, etc) 26. Is there/what is a song that you always associate with a movie or tv show? 30. Do you sing along to songs in the car? In the shower? other places?
1. what is your favourite song of all time?
I have a hard time with picking favorites! I have been singing “Patio Song” by Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci for literal decades, so that?
3. if you were to get lyrics tattooed on you, which would they be? (or tell about what you already have!)
Both of my music tattoos don’t have lyrics! First thing that comes to mind is “Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all”
5. is there a song that always makes you cry, no matter what? what is it?
“Alley Cats” by Hot Chip. It’s weird and odd, has a Beach Boys worms reference, partially about cats, but also about losing a parent. I remember hearing this part of my first time with an album by them and thinking maybe Hot Chip wasn’t for me and then getting sideswiped halfway through.
The album version is so good but I also love this super stripped back version:
youtube
9. who are your top three all time favourite bands or artists?
Hot Chip, for sure. I think they’re an incredible band. Funky, soulful, melodic, intelligent, odd, loving, and beautiful dance music. They’re amazing live.
Super Furry Animals, probably still? Especially their 2001-2004 output.
Belle & Sebastian based on the lifetime listening stats alone. I don’t know if this is a well earned spot on the list or not, but also facts.
I love so many bands but I don’t know if they’re my favorites. 🫡
13. what's an album cover that you would frame and put up in your house?
I have a Gruff Rhys album cover that’s framed and on display.
15. what is a song you are obsessed with at the moment?
“Escape & Retreat” by Hollywood Sidewinder.
22. what band do you think has the best or most interesting story? (toxic breakup, bandmates in love, etc)
My favorite story is Joe and Alexis, who met as 11 year olds* and a few years later formed Hot Chip. I love their friendship (along with the rest of the band) and all the things they’ve made together. Someone was making a documentary about how important the relationships in the band were to them, something about being brothers. I’m not sure if it’ll ever come out though.
*When they met, they initially bonded over wrestling? Alexis who is very small challenged Joe (very large) to a wrestling match and lost.
Tumblr media
26. Is there/what is a song that you always associate with a movie or tv show?
Twin Shadow used to make such fitting lyrically fanfic’y songs and I associate a ton of his songs with ships.
30. Do you sing along to songs in the car? In the shower? other places?
Mostly in the car but sometimes in the shower.

Hi! I‘ve enjoyed reading your posts for a while now, but I never really knew what to ask you myself. But I was at the Ateez show in Zürich tonight and before the show my friends and me talked about what kind of music Ateez/K-Pop stans listen to besides K-Pop - I listen to a lot of metal, one of my friends enjoys musicals, etc. I was still thinking about it when I scrolled tumblr and saw one of your posts, so I just wanted to know what you enjoy listening to besides K-Pop? Sorry if that‘s a weird question to ask, but I‘m running on that lovely mix of sleep deprivation, adrenaline and post concert depression rn, so I‘m not great at thinking currently.
I sent you an ask about your concert experience because I just got so excited for you (You don't have to answer at all, if you don't want to!!).
Thank you for this ask. I have a desk job and a long commute and have had both for a while, so I have music on constantly. (Also, apparently needing something on 'in the background' all the time has something to do with my ND brain as well).
Way more information than is reasonable, below:
I listen to a lot of Western Classical music. It's what I was raised on. I love Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Shostakovich, and Phillip Glass. I go back & forth on loving Schubert and wanting to shake him. I especially love the piano, and I am a fan of classical pianists - Glenn Gould, Martha Argerich, Seungjin Cho, Yunchan Lim, Lang Lang, Angela Hewitt, and Vikingur Olafsson. (Gould, Hewitt and Olafsson are Bach specialists.)
Catholic religious music - Gregorian Chants, Requiems, various Stabat Mater iterations (I prefer the Pergolesi version above the Vivaldi).
Opera. All opera. I love the sound of opera, of how fucking unhinged everyone is in an opera. I love the sweep of that music. I have burst into tears at the opera a LOT because I am very sane.
Modern pansori done by really cool Korean artists like 악단광칠 (check out their youtube channel!) who take the most fun, cool parts of pansori and make it a bit faster, a bit more aggressive, and use modern (rather than 19th century) Korean slang.
Bollywood has SPECTACULAR music. Sonu Nigam has a voice from God, and I am always like Yes, bhai, have and get and do whatever you want, even though I have no idea what you're saying. I found the Devdas soundtrack (and movie) so marvelous,. Karan Johar, who put a lot of hit Bollywood films together, also used great Bollywood pop songs. Dil Se, the movie, had a song, Chaiyya Chaiyya, that was so very catchy that I listened to it too much at one point and woke up dreaming in Hindi lyrics.
Vocalists I love: Ella Fitzgerald, KD Lang, Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf. Otis Redding. Marvin Gaye. James Brown.
Singer songwriters I love, who are all Americans: Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple, Dolly Parton, Melissa Etheridge. Stevie Wonder.
I am unironic in thinking Michael Jackson was the Bach and Mozart combined for pop music and popular culture, even though he was such a disturbed man who hurt children. Everyone, all the way down to Ateez, is still doing and extending what he put together, either by sound or by look or dance.
80s and 90s Madonna I just love because she was an aggressive short Catholic girl who wanted to be a nun and a saint but also slut around and give everyone the finger, and how can I not love that.
Prince is the only male lyricist to write love and sex songs that are perfect for women.
I wanted George Michael to live forever, or at least as long as Tony Bennett. He's also HUGELY influential on Kpop - that slight, breathy, slightly chilly 'refreshing' sound that mainstream kpop goes for sounds very George Michael to me.
I love the songs of Cole Porter. He was such a WONDERFUL songwriter and the vocabulary of the song lyrics of that era are so elegant and sly and make me glad I learned English.
I also love rap but from a very particular era or style, I think? It's a bit more limited. I love Ludacris. When I wish I had a big huge voice to tell someone off with I listen to DMX. I have favorites from Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Snoot Dogg, Eminem, 50Cent. These are all dudes on my playlist for those days when I feel like ... Some People Need To Be Shot. I like them because all these artists enunciate their words really clearly.
I also, sometimes, get a kick out of big white boys being big and loud - Creedence Clearwater Revival, a couple songs from Metallica, some Guns 'n' Roses and Nirvana (I'm listing them together because I know they hated each other lol), Audioslave, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Of the current Western pop landscape, I think Dua Lipa is probably my favorite.
