Reflection and Evaluation of Learning 4
Sound design was something I had always done on my own, however this time i worked with 2 groups of people, the first didnt really do anything, but the second were working in a file format which I was unfamilier with AAF files. This is an advanced multimedia file type which can contain lots of types of data such as images and sounds seperated into their different layers. AAF seems to be the ultimate audio designing file type as its used in Pro Tools and FL Studio. I however had no way of opening these files, and i had to reformat my audio in a way which the sound designers could use in their software.
The software I had been using to add audio was Premiere Pro however my file was mixed in stereo and to import files into Pro Tools the file must be mono.
A bit of context so the next part makes sense... I had 14 audio tracks originally
Alex (Vocal)
Hugh with some Alex (Vocal)
Glenda (Vocal)
Van
Woosh
Movement
Scratch audio
Other sound effects 1
Other sound effects 2
Music
Clothing
Overflow1
Overflow2
Overflow3
With all my audio on separated and themed layers I created a new document with multichannel audio enabled, I then copied all the tracks from the old document to the new (creating another identical set of 14 tracks). However as this document is multichannel audio I set the total number of audio channels to 8.
Tumblr media
(above are the tracks, there are 14 but the window was too small to show all the tracks at once so its cropped off a few)
I then each track to be panned entirely to the left or right in an alternating pattern (as seen below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I exported this document as an .AAF file it pushes the 14 audio tracks through 8 channels where the left and right are each different tracks. The software my sound engineers were using automatically assumed these stereo outputs as mono, and so would separate my 8 channels out back into their original 16 tracks
This process worked and enabled my sound designers access to the work I had already done and now I understand the software sound engineers use I am more prepared to format my work in a way (from the start) that is best for them. While yes, this is not strictly speaking animation skills, I do think learning this was important as I plan to work with the same sound designers moving forward I do also see that this might have been a slight waste of time if my goal was to only finish my film.
I could have put this time into other things which may have had more immediate impacts but I am happy I prioritised this as the deadline for the MA is not the same as the deadline for my film, and moving forward this is so useful to have and understanding of.
This information was way out of my comfort zone and so I used a couple of tutorials to educate myself on the subject.

a bunch of people have already registered for my mentoring workshop! unfortunately this means i have to plan and host a workshop aaaaaa
#i want to think aloud through it on here at some point#but i think i am going to structure it around the theme of cultivating student autonomy#because i think one of the primary goals of mentorship is to prepare students to be self-directed learners who can set realistic goals +#evaluate their own progress + reflect on what they've learned and what they still don't know#+ take initiative without sitting around waiting for someone to tell them what to do next#so i think we will do some thinking around like#when we have a student we think of as really capable or driven what qualities and behaviors do we observe in that student#and maybe ill also share some of the research on intrinsic motivation + self-direction + locus of control#which i think is all really interesting esp in light of the contemporary College Mental Health Crisis concerns#and then we will look at a range of tools + structures + strategies that i think are useful for fostering student autonomy over time#and maybe leave them with some core principles/guiding values that i think are useful when you are trying to like#avoid jumping in and doing stuff for kids#or solving their problems for them#idk i need to think through specifics a bit more#but i feel like on this campus#people do a lot of 'workshops' that are really not interactive at all#it's just someone talking from slides#and i kind of want to show off my ability to structure more engaging workshops#but idk. gotta think about how to do it well#and how to build in lots of opportunities for like crowdsourcing strategies too

Self-Reflection: Evaluating My Learning Process
Learning is a continuous journey, and as individuals, we encounter various challenges and triumphs along the way. In this blog, I will reflect on my experiences during the 3D modeling and texturing phases of two projects: AMG ONE and MAD MAX – Buzzard Car. I will also explore the importance of efficient time management, goal setting, and the impact of seeking guidance and feedback in the learning process.
Value of Efficient Time Management: During the AMG ONE project, I learned the importance of efficient time management. By setting challenging yet achievable goals and creating weekly milestones, I was able to monitor my progress effectively. Dedication to investing a significant amount of time in my trade allowed me to excel in my work. However, I faced challenges during the lighting phase, where I struggled to visualize the desired outcome. This additional time investment taught me that sometimes, certain aspects of a project require more attention, and that's okay, as long as it contributes to the overall quality of the work.
Embracing Challenges: The MAD MAX – Buzzard Car project tested my time management skills due to balancing part-time and full-time work. Despite this challenge, I remained committed to my self-imposed deadline. It also provided me with an opportunity to focus on honing my weaker skill—texturing. Each day, I dedicated myself to improving my texturing abilities, seeking excellence in every detail. Embracing these challenges pushed me to grow and improve as an artist.
Seeking Guidance and Feedback: Throughout my learning journey, I have come to appreciate the significance of seeking guidance and feedback from industry experts, colleagues, and professors. In the AMG ONE project, I struggled with the studio lighting aspect. However, by recalling advice from a previous project, I experimented with the golden hour setup and found success. This experience reinforced the value of learning from others' insights and experiences, leading to better results.
Overcoming Obstacles and Perseverance: Both projects taught me the importance of overcoming obstacles and persevering to achieve my goals. Whether it was the uncertainty in the lighting phase or the challenges of balancing work and deadlines, determination and discipline were key. By staying focused and committed, I was able to complete both projects successfully and surpass my own expectations.
The Significance of Developing a Solid Concept: One crucial lesson that emerged from these projects is the importance of developing a clear concept before diving into the work. Although I successfully created stills of the car, I realized that placing the car in a suitable environment requires a well-thought-out concept. Understanding the location and the reason behind it plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall artwork's impact.
Conclusion: Reflecting on my individual learning processes throughout these projects has been an enriching experience. I have learned the value of efficient time management, the significance of embracing challenges, seeking guidance and feedback, and the power of perseverance and finally the importance of developing a strong concept.. These lessons have not only helped me grow as a 3D artist but also as an individual dedicated to continuous learning and improvement. As I move forward in my artistic journey, I will carry these reflections with me, using them as stepping stones to reach new heights in my creativity and skill. Remember, learning is a dynamic process, and every obstacle we overcome is an opportunity for growth and success.

Tips for writing internal conflict
1. Define the Core Dilemma
• Internal conflict occurs when a character faces a choice or emotional struggle within themselves. This dilemma should challenge their values or identity.
• How? The struggle should feel deeply personal and tied to the character’s motivations.
• Example: A character who values independence but must rely on others in a life-or-death situation.
2. Make it tied to their core values
• The conflict should challenge what the character holds dear—whether it’s their morals, desires, or goals.
• How? The inner conflict should push the character to re-evaluate their beliefs and priorities.
• Example: A soldier torn between duty and personal ethics, forced to choose between following orders and doing what’s right.
3. Amplify with external consequences
• Link internal conflict to external consequences that impact the character and those around them. The choices they face should have significant repercussions.
• How? Show how the character’s internal conflict influences their decisions in the real world.
• Example: A character haunted by guilt must choose whether to admit their past mistakes, risking their career and relationships.
4. Show the pressure building over time
• Internal conflict intensifies when it’s compounded by time, increasing stakes, or mounting external pressure.
• How? Create scenes where the character feels the weight of their choices growing heavier with every passing moment.
• Example: A character whose addiction threatens to ruin their life, struggling to break free but tempted by old habits every day.
5. Conflict arises from competing desires
• Internal conflict often stems from having two equally strong desires that cannot coexist.
• How? Put your character in situations where they must choose between these desires, both of which seem vital.
• Example: A character torn between pursuing their dream job across the country or staying to care for a dying parent.
6. Explore their fears and insecurities
• Internal conflict can also be driven by the character’s deepest fears or insecurities, which affect their actions and decisions.
• How? Fear of failure, rejection, or loss can prevent them from acting, making every decision feel like a battle.
• Example: A character who has been hurt before refuses to let anyone in, even though they deeply crave connection.
7. The power of self-sabotage
• Let the character’s internal conflict lead to self-sabotage. They may avoid decisions or create obstacles to protect themselves from facing their own feelings.
• How? Show how the character's fear or internal resistance undermines their progress.
• Example: A character constantly pushes away someone they care about because they fear their own vulnerability.
8. Use internal dialogue to show the battle
• Let readers hear the character’s internal struggle through thoughts, doubts, or justifications. Internal dialogue can make the conflict feel more immediate and real.
• How? Keep the internal dialogue sharp, reflective, and in line with the character’s voice.
• Example: “I want to tell them the truth, but what if they leave? Can I really risk that?”
9. Drive change through resolution
• The internal conflict should lead to growth or change in the character. They should evolve, learn, or make peace with their internal struggle.
• How? The resolution should feel earned and reflect the character’s journey.
• Example: A character who fears commitment learns to trust and embrace vulnerability in the face of love.
10. Let it affect the bigger picture
• The resolution of internal conflict should impact the story’s larger arc, showing how the character’s inner change leads to progress or a new direction.
• How? The resolution should tie back to the theme and forward momentum of the plot.
• Example: A character who learns to forgive themselves is able to take the final step in reconciling with a loved one, mending broken relationships.

Some Final Thoughts Moving Forward
Moving forward with my practice I need to remember to simplify my characters and the worlds or commit time to projects, half way doesn't work. I think my works humour and style could still make my work meet the quality of other practitioners, without it taking as much time if i simplify further. I have developed a lot as a director and I think finding the balance between my previous illustration style and my current style has been one of the main things that allowed this development. I used to be a lot more attached to my work and would always make sure my lines were good and smooth etc, but in taking this style over to animation it slowed me down a lot, I changed my approach to line but now I must continue to grow my understanding of design with an emphasis on ease of animation, posing and extremes.
I have found a work flow that works for me but I also have identified a way I could make my workflow even faster, If I develop a treatment for flat colours or line work which has an appealing aesthetic but can be applied to all frames quickly - like many motion graphics artists use, it could improve my workflow a lot. I have spent time learning adobe after effects but because this skill took a back seat behind finishing my coursework and project I did not include this stage in my work flow. In my caveman film I used a similar kind of treatment to the one I am talking about and for a longer film like the one I'm currently working on it seems like a great solution to the problem of time. I'm going to continue working on researching this topic further in my own time.
Congrats you've made it through the blog. Thanks for everything and I hope you have a nice day week and year.
Joe :)

I wish people were willing to have a slightly broader or more expansive understanding of FFXIV's women because I think there's so much there in terms of easily-unearthed subtext that no one really thinks about! And I don't mean this in a "people need to re-evaluate their response to the women of Stormblood" way (though I do think that's largely true), I mean I think fandom's understanding even of the women it mostly likes is pretty weak. And you can say that's because the women are underwritten, and I won't argue that they couldn't use more attention from the writing, but that doesn't prevent you from analyzing them the way you can any character in fiction.
Like everyone's always like, oh, Y'shtola and Krile are like your snarky wine aunts, haha. But...Sharlayan is a pretty ossified and patriarchal society from what we see of it in Endwalker and places like the AST quests. Can we open ourselves to the possibility that it means something that almost every young Sharlayan woman we meet, almost all young women in academia, tends to be a little sharp and quick on the retort? The arch and snarky ways in which those two carry themselves reflect in some sense the facts that Krile is almost literally a nepo baby woman in STEM who is barely older than her students, while Y'shtola learned her behaviors from her much older female mentor, a woman who hated Sharlayan academic culture so much she literally abandoned it to go live in a cave.
Or like, Alisaie! Fan jokes and meta frequently buy into her tendency to characterize the dynamic between her and Alphinaud as a jock/nerd, street savvy extrovert vs book smart introvert thing. Except, tragically, Alphinaud's highest stat is 100% Charisma and he absolutely pulled in his student days. All his greatest achievements are diplomatic, and he very easily develops strong friendships with people in every culture you learn about. Alisaie is the determined, sensitive genius who revolutionizes Eorzea by proving the tempered can be healed. She's just permanently carrying a chip on her shoulder that while she and her brother are remembered as the youngest students in Studium history, actually he got in six months before her, a fact pretty much no one else ever brings up once. She's constantly fuming over the fact that he was marginally better than her in certain specific ways in high school, and looking to differentiate them in ways that actually fail to credit her own obvious strengths and accomplishments. I think that's so fun! It's so juicy, and it's equally good for comedy or serious character studies.
Venat is a genuinely benevolent hero who has no compunction sacrificing lives for the greater good. Minfilia is kind and compassionate and clearly on some level actually buys into the narrative of her own unique moral authority. Ysayle is a revolutionary firebrand with almost no concern for the common man, whose death reflects her Javert-like inability to reconcile her own romantic belief in justice with the tragic ways her blinkered worldview (born largely of trauma) let her be easily co-opted by a violent system. But even people who like these characters rarely move past surface-level reads (people who think Venat is just an all-loving mommy figure make me want to fucking die). The fandom is allergic to drawing connections the game doesn't draw, and fails to recognize that FFXIV is a game where characters voice understandings of themselves and others that are wrong about as often as they're right.
You can already see the ways that women like Wuk Lamat and Cahciua and Sphene are getting flattened or losing their shading in fan reception and it's boring. Like I'm not even saying this because you should take female characters more seriously or something (though you should), I'm literally just bored to tears sometimes and if you guys turn Wuk Lamat into another Hot Dumb Jock Lady, I will combust.

Humans acting like service animals
I have a stupide idea that the human can act like service animals for all the big bots, helping them through PTSD or other mental issues. or just being there for them as a mental support.
Like big bot is forced/ goes on his own accord to go to "shrink", get evaluated and the next day BOOM he has a small human by his side, in reflective vest saying something alone like Mental Health Aid and follow the big bot around, helping them in situations like when ever they feel to angry and ready to burst, the human would tap them and try to get their attention, quickly diverting it towards them and big bot would completely forget every thing about anger, to focused on petting the little human.
Even funnier will be that humans will have to go classes to learn how to act around big alien bots to help them to get to better state of mental health. and they will proudly display their diploma saying like "look, I am certified Therapist for Big robot and I am proud of it. My patient is getting better and better with every day!"
and then there is a "patient" saying "My little human such a Prime send, I have no idea what would I do without them. They are so cute and adorable, I love them so much. Look at this cute little trick they know and all this cute outfits I got them. But do not pet them, they are working right now"
