a bunch of people have already registered for my mentoring workshop! unfortunately this means i have to plan and host a workshop aaaaaa
#i want to think aloud through it on here at some point#but i think i am going to structure it around the theme of cultivating student autonomy#because i think one of the primary goals of mentorship is to prepare students to be self-directed learners who can set realistic goals +#evaluate their own progress + reflect on what they've learned and what they still don't know#+ take initiative without sitting around waiting for someone to tell them what to do next#so i think we will do some thinking around like#when we have a student we think of as really capable or driven what qualities and behaviors do we observe in that student#and maybe ill also share some of the research on intrinsic motivation + self-direction + locus of control#which i think is all really interesting esp in light of the contemporary College Mental Health Crisis concerns#and then we will look at a range of tools + structures + strategies that i think are useful for fostering student autonomy over time#and maybe leave them with some core principles/guiding values that i think are useful when you are trying to like#avoid jumping in and doing stuff for kids#or solving their problems for them#idk i need to think through specifics a bit more#but i feel like on this campus#people do a lot of 'workshops' that are really not interactive at all#it's just someone talking from slides#and i kind of want to show off my ability to structure more engaging workshops#but idk. gotta think about how to do it well#and how to build in lots of opportunities for like crowdsourcing strategies too

Who would have Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen become if Xue Yang had been taken to Baoshan Sanren’s mountain and Xiao Xingchen had grown up on the streets?
Featuring: a (slightly) more righteous Xue Yang, a (much) more angry Xiao Xingchen, and a long suffering (but much happier) Song Lan who did not sign up for these people in his life.
(an AU brought to you by a conversation I had with @paradife-loft)
So Xue Yang, who was brilliant and resourceful, and possessed of a strong golden core was taken to the mountain and brought up as Baoshan Sanren’s youngest disciple. This does not make him magically and suddenly able to match up the pain and suffering of others with his own. If pressed, he knows that just one of his fingers (of which he has ten!) is worth fifty lives or more, because his fingers are his own and the lives are of others.
But he’s grown up now in a secure environment that fosters and encourages senses of justice and wellbeing. He understands that everyone else in the room has their own sense of self-importance, of being a fully realized person, even if he can’t really get his head around it for others. He also understands that the code by which they live, which values caring for other’s needs and seeing the other as as valuable as the self, (and even to tear down the separations between other and self) has provided him and others with a good, fair life.
People often thrive on the mountain. He’s thriving. So even though Xue Yang doesn’t really possess an intuitive comprehension of how others have worth and feelings that might even be equal to his own, he can focus on the abstract and philosophical principles that guide him to behave in a manner that suggests he does comprehend it. Even if he doesn’t.
The outwardly imposed sense of ethics takes the place of inner morality.
Now for Xiao Xingchen - he’s not nearly so trusting as he is in canon. He doesn’t possess as bright and clear a sense of right and wrong either. He does try to do what’s right, but it’s more complicated. He absolutely uses his cultivation to steal food and money for himself, to eat and survive. But he also shares more with the other street kids than he can maybe afford.
It marks him out as weak to people who think they can take advantage of him but Xiao Xingchen is naturally strong with a brilliant core (how is he cultivating it? sshhh, it’s pretend) and people don’t tend to think they can take advantage of him more than once. (Especially not since his own hand got run over and many of the people he’d been helping to feed disappeared on him when he needed help. He lost a finger, to the equivalent of the Chang Clan wherever he was, and he stopped being quite as quick to help people.)
At some point as a teenager he’s recruited to be a minor disciple of a cultivation clan, and he took advantage of that to learn and train and he even gets a sword of his own, but it doesn’t take long before he leaves in disgust. He can’t stand the hypocrisy involved. Maybe he even pulls a Mianmian and dramatically removes a sash!
Besides, he’s far less interested in hunts and adventure. He’s more drawn helping spirits and ghosts move on, because he has more of an understanding of why they might be so resentful in the first place. There have been many times in his life where, if he died right then, he would have stuck around to haunt the ones responsible.
Xue Yang is still sharp, is still cruel, is still prone to disproportionate retaliation, but it’s tempered by the philosophy with which he grew up. Xiao Xingchen is still sweet, is still overwhelmingly generous with himself, but he’s much less patient, has more sharp edges.
Xue Yang has a sense of place and security. Not only does he know he matters, but others around him have validated that. They tell him he matters too.
Xiao Xingchen has no place and no security. Even when people in power take an interest in him, he is not just disinterested in politics, he despises it. He feels betrayed by the sects for allowing people to have grown up the way he did. For letting clans like the Chang trample the fingers of disposable children.
So Song Lan has temporarily left Baixue Temple to travel around, to do what he can to help people, to make sure he doesn’t grow used to a state of permanence and place and he runs into Xiao Xingchen who is laying some ghosts to rest with a level of respect and tenderness he doesn’t usually see in cultivators. Especially when they’re the ghosts of nobodies.
He’s taken aback. He impressed. He’s a little smitten.
And he joins in the effort without a word of introduction, and Xiao Xingchen is equally surprised by Song Lan, who is kind and patient and dives into the work that other cultivators don’t bother to do at all. He’s taken aback and impressed and a little smitten as well.
They start traveling together. Song Lan restrains Xiao Xingchen from some of his less legal impulses. He keeps him from making messes of situations that will bring harsh things down on them both. Xiao Xingchen shows Song Lan how so much more of the world works. They introduce each other to new places and new manners of cultivation. They spar together and study together.
Song Lan improves Xiao Xingchen’s literacy and Xiao Xingchen teaches Song Lan how to fight without a sword. They go back to Baixue for a bit and Xiao Xingchen gets some more formal training.
Xue Yang, meanwhile, is bored. There’s a world down there full of things he has only heard about secondhand and he’s a firsthand knowledge kind of guy. Curiosity gets the best of him eventually and he leaves with a beautiful sword (but there’s something just a little off about the sword, not that anyone says anything, Baoshan Sanren gave it to him, after all) and a lot of hunger.
He runs into Xiao Xingchen first. He likes him. He’s angry, and Xue Yang is starting to see that there’s a lot to be angry about. He’s also inherently compassionate and Xue Yang kind of wishes he himself were compassionate person too.
And Xiao Xingchen is fascinated by Xue Yang. He’s from a completely different world! He still has a cruel streak, and it’s used against everyone, but Xue Yang is traveling around, doing a lot of good, not for himself, not for glory, but just because Xue Yang is convinced that’s what he should be doing in and of itself. It’s what he’s been taught to do. Xiao Xingchen can respect that.
Besides, Xue Yang shares with him a deep disdain for how the world is being run, and between the two of them, there’s an urge to tear that down.
Xue Yang does not like Song Lan. Song Lan is boring, he’s grown up with a far more orthodox interpretation of Daoist philosophy than he has, and he plays by the rules more than Xiao Xingchen does. Worst of all, Xiao Xingchen likes Song Lan too much.
Song Lan does not like Xue Yang. He clocks that cruel streak, he clocks the way he looks at Xiao Xingchen. Xue Yang is cold and doesn’t actually care about the people they’re helping, and sometimes he’s one comment away from hurting the people around them. Hurting them badly.
Xiao Xingchen likes them both very, very much.
War breaks out, of course. All three of them get out of the way.
Xue Yang doesn’t care, it’s all a bunch of worldly bullshit. Nothing will change when the next sect rises to power and starts the same cycle of abuse all over again. Baoshan Sanren has warned all her disciples about that.
Xiao Xingchen doesn’t care. All the sects are the same to him and innocent people are getting caught in the middle and that’s the greatest crime. He wouldn’t fight for any of those sects, though sometimes he wants to fight against them all.
Song Lan doesn’t care. It’s not for him to want to change the way the world is run, it’s for him to try and improve upon the lives of as many people as possible in as many small ways as he can. People need him, and he won’t be able to help them if he gets distracted by things like war.
They all get as far away as possible because by this point they’ve all made names for themselves, and many in the sects want them on their side or want them out of the way. They get so far away that they barely notice when the war is over and they start trading dreams about starting their own... something
Song Lan wants to call it a sect.
Xiao Xingchen does not.
Xue Yang doesn’t have an opinion but he takes Xiao Xingchen’s side because it’s funny what that does to Song Lan.
Whatever it is, their first disciple (not a disciple, she’s a child, she’s a little sister, okay, but we could still call her a disciple, no we could not) is a sharp-tongued girl who they’re all pretty sure isn’t blind? Honestly, it’s hard to say. Xiao Xingchen catches her trying to fleece them.
She’s going to be the best student ever.

Steve's Marketing Advice June 2019
(This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com and Steve's Tumblr. Find out more at my newsletter.)
It’s the latest update of my Marketing Tips! As always, I keep updating these every few months.
The Core Principle: The Web Of Connections
To promote yourself your various activities, giveaways, social media, and so on need to connect and reinforce each other. If a new book comes out, promote it on your website and give away a few copies in your newsletter. If you’re speaking on art, give out bookmarks with links to your website. Everything ties together.
This does make finding what works a bit challenging, so I take these steps:
Do what is easy, like cross-posting sales and stuff among my social media. Hey, it’s easy. Then I monitor what seems to work.
Do what seems rational and looks like it’ll pay off. Don’t try everything, try what will probably work.
Do what seems fun. Why not enjoy this?
Advance marketing with incremental steps. Usually that takes a month or two to show, so I tend to do my experiments every month or every other month.
Record what I find from above. What do you think this post is?
Over time you’ll find what works for you, what doesn’t, and how elements interact. It might help to keep a list like this!
Have A Website
Have a website, period. A website is a place you can send people to that acts as a "hub" for your marketing efforts. It doesn't have to be complex (I've got some tips below), it has to be a place that acts as a hub for finding out more about you. The goal of a website is to have a one-stop-show for people to come to for information, and leave from to go to your various portfolios, books, social media, etc.
Follow these steps:
Get a domain name (networksolutions.com, tierra.net are recommended). Make sure the name is unique, fits you, and can be re-purposed if your plans change (FrankDoesArt.com is a bit specific, but FrankGetsCreative.com is more general).
Set up a website. Most people I know use www.dreamhost.com or www.wix.com. Just start with one page to make it easy - I've seen successful authors whose page is a blurb and a list of books.
A fast way to do it is buy a domain and redirect it to one of your social media accounts or a portfolio setup (like Twitter or LinkedIn). You can build the site later.
Link to all your books, art, portfolio, and social media from here.
This website should be mentioned in your books, social media, etc. so people get prompted to visit.
Link to all your social media from the website – LinkedIn, Goodreads, whatever. Well, whatever is appropriate, like maybe no one wants your photo collection of antique pots on that photo sharing site.
Other things to add:
A schedule of speaking engagement.
Reviews of your books.
Testimonials.
Helpful downloads - like character sheets, guides, etc.
Fun things not necessarily related to your writing like a cookbook or a link to pet pictures.
Have Appropriate Social Media
Social media is a troublesome subject. Yes, it can let you market - or be annoying. Yes it can let you meet people - or it can waste time. It also changes in value over time. However, done right it's a great way to connect with people.
Your social media should always link back to your website and in many cases, your other social media. This helps create a "web" of connections, so people are able to go to one social media source, find your others, and of course buy your stuff.
My takes on social media in rough order are:
Twitter: Twitter, for it's many flaws, has a lot of use, its simple, and with lists and filtering (and learning when to ignore it) you can meet authors, promote yourself, and be found. I'd determine what approach you want to use (from marketing to just goofing off) and do it.
LinkedIn: You should have a LinkedIn profile anyway, but how much of your "creative" life you want to share or link to depends on your goals and personal image. If you do list your creative works, don’t forget the options like “publications.” Also remember there are communities there you can join.
Instagram and other photo-sharing sites: Some people use this to promote their work, others use it as a sort of photoblog. I'm mixed on it myself.
Facebook: Facebook keeps having issues, but it helps to have a presence. I'd keep an author page on it at the very least and see how you engage.
Amazon Author Site: Set up your Amazon Author Site at Author Central. This also can be a place to point your web domain.
Books2Read Author Site: I learned about this as Draft2Digital.com sets you up there if you use them. Not sure it’s useful as I’ve just set one up, but its pretty nice.
By the way, a good way to manage social media in one go is www.Hootsuite.com.
Have A Newsletter
A newsletter is the way to engage with readers and keep people informed, as well as give them cool reviews, interesting updates, and more. In some ways it's like a mailed blog, but I separate them as a newsletter is more focused and like an update, whereas blogs can be more freeform. If you don't do a blog, do a newsletter, and if you only have time for one do the newsletter.
The ruler of newsletters is www.mailchimp.com, which has an amazing free service and reasonable paid services.
Make sure that your newsletter subscription form(s) are linked to from as much social media as possible and, of course, your website.
Some newsletter tips:
Don't overdo it or underdo it - I do it every two weeks.
Find a "feel" for your newsletter - a roundup, personal, chatty, serious, etc. Judge what works.
Include any vital updates about your work. Link to your blog, new books, cool things.
Give away "Lead Magnets" - basically free stuff like samples, an occasional free book copy, downloadable cool stuff, etc.
Use it to promote other cool things - help folks out.
Remember that most newsletter software gives you all sorts of statistics and data - you can use this to improve reaching people!
Have A Blog
Blogs are ways to post thoughts, essays, and more, turning your web presence into a kind of personal magazine/announcement/discussion board. Most authors use them, though at various rates of usage, from constant posts to "occasional speaking updates."
A blog is usually part of your author website, and thus is another reason to come there - and to go and check out your work and your other media. Most blog setups can act as your author page as well (which is what I do).
I use blogs to:
Give weekly updates on myself.
Post various essays and thoughts.
Review or promote interesting things.
In a few cases, blog posts then became other books, or I round them up to publish free "compendiums."
You can set up blogs at the following sites, with various advantages and limits. Some allow you to use your own domain name, some don't.
Most webhosts.
Wordpress.com
Blogspot.com
A few techniques:
You can get a domain and just point it at your blog or a similar site (like your Tumblr) and save time.
Some authors and artists do blog tours where they post across each other's blogs.
If you have related social media accounts (LinkedIn, Tumblr, etc.) consider posting your blog entries to all of them when appropriate. Just make sure they redirect to your site.
Set up an RSS feed (or find it's address in a standard setup) and put a link on your blog. I also recommend www.feedburner.com despite it being sort of static by now.
Mailchimp.com and some other mail software programs let people subscribe to a blog feed so they get email updates. You can also load those with helpful extras and information.
An important caveat - if you're a prolific writer, you have to find the blogging/writing balance. It's not an easy call because a few long blog posts can take as much time to set up as a small fiction piece. In some cases small books may be like blog posts so you have to ask “write a book or write a set of blog posts.” I cover that more later.
Physical Media
Many authors and artists give away cards, bookmarks, etc. I find these different giveaways vary in effectiveness, so I’m not sure how well they work for me or you. However, it doesn’t stop me from doing them as they’re easy, and sometimes expected. I also figure saturating the world with references to my work helps.
The one challenge is that this costs money, and you may not want to spend money on business cards, bookmarks, etc. So you want to balance your choices.
Here’s what I try and what I find works:
Business Cards – These are a must if you’re serious, and the only physical media I can truly say that about. Business Cards are cheap to get, easy to give out, and even expected. Most print shops and office supply stores have quick options.
Bookmarks – This is popular among the book crowd for obvious reasons. I’m not sure how well they work, but they do make it easy to set out information, give them away in panels, leave at interested shops, etc. They can be a bit pricey depending on the deal you swing,
Mini-pictures – I’ve seen artists give away small cards with their art and contact information, sort of a sample/bookmark/business card fusion. This may be worth trying.
For printed bookmarks and the like I recommend www.clubflyers.com.
I always have business cards with me, keep some bookmarks in my car, and take bookmarks to any events I speak at.
Giveaways And Promotionals (Mostly Authors)
A great way to get people's attention is to give out stuff like free books, extras, samples, and more. With these properly done (and linked back to other works), its a great way to get attention, meet people, and of course get sales.
There's two services I recommend for authors. For artists you may have to look for other methods.
Prolificworks.com - having both free and subscription modes, it lets you give away work and join (or create) promotions. The paid version lets you tie giveaways into your mailing list as well. It does get a bit pricey beyond the Free level ($20 to $50 a month), so I recommend paid tiers for serious authors nly.
www.bookfunnel.com - Is a cheap ($20 a year to start) way to do book giveaways in a variety of formats, and higher tiers include features like Prolificworks.com. I'm fond of the starter tier as its a great way to make book giveaways easier (and if you don't want to host your giveaways).
To make these work you have to obviously be dedicated to it and work out strategies. I use them to:
Give away free stuff and samples to my newsletter subscribers.
Give away a few copies of new books via Prolificworks.com
Have promotional giveaways (often samples) that people can sign up to my newsletter to get.
I join groups on Prolificworks.com to do team giveaways.
I use both - Instafreebie lets me set up easy giveaways, and Prolificworks gives me all sorts of options.
If you use KDP, there's a KDP Exclusive you can use for eBooks. In exchange for making your work exclusive with Amazon, you get some tools to set up sales and giveaways. It’s easy for starting authors.
Have A Portfolio
If you're a visual artist of any kind, have a portfolio. Put it on your website, use a social media site like Deviantart.com, whatever. People want to see your work and maybe buy it, so make it easy to do. If you take commissions, it's pretty much a way to market yourself.
Non-visual artists like authors may want a portfolio as well. This would contain:
Cover art.
Sample works.
Free giveaways.
Summaries of your work (with links to purchase it). For instance, I have a press website a lot like this.
Do Series
If you're doing fiction, you probably already have a series in mind. If your books are non-fiction, you may want to group them into series, because various bookselling sites will remind people that "X book is part of Y" series. If you’re an artist, this may help as well.
The advantage of the series are:
A series promotes the books within it. When people seem a book is in a series, they may check out another.
A series creates cross-promotion as it sells. When one book gets another book to sell, the various websites that sell them may refer books to other readers.
A series shows commitment. When you’re doing a series it shows that you care and plan to stick around – or did stick around.
It takes time for a series to “take off.” Once it starts getting attention and people buy other books, then they get more recommendations, more attention, etc. On Amazon and other book distribution services, this results in more promotion over time.
A series can even act as a kind of low-profit loss-leader or self-promotional. If someone buys small books in a series, or you write a series to focus on a popular subject, then it gets attention to your other works.
Do Multiple Formats
One of the challenges of selling media is that people want to consume it in different formats. Unless you’re very sure that your target audience wants a certain format, try out different ways to sell things.
If you write books, then consider ebooks, different ebook formats, and print.
If you do art, maybe your art can be in several sizes and formats.
For instance, I’ve found some of my physical books sell well around the holidays as people use them as gifts. Others are the kind of thing people want in print for easy review or taking notes. So over time I’ve branched out in my book formats.
Remember every sale helps – though some formats (like print) are hard and costly to set up, so evaluate their worth.
Calculated Distribution (Authors)
This part is pretty much only for authors – and for book distribution.
For print books, your usual choices are Amazon and IngramSpark (or IngramSpark via Lulu). Amazon doesn’t charge, the other services do, but bookstores don’t always like to stock Amazon books as it’s a competitor.
For ebooks, your choices are:
Go with Amazon’s KDP Select, where you only go through Amazon but get marketing tools like sales. Amazon is the majority of the market, so if you go Amazon its easier.
Distribute incredibly widely. This takes time, and you don’t get Amazon’s marketing tools, but you get the chance to make more sales. Some authors I know find they sell more books outside of Amazon, but I haven’t figured out any rules or principles to this.
If you go broad here’s my take
Draft2Digital is the easiest way to go broad, but only does eBooks. I also recommend managing your Amazon account separately. Draft2Digital doesn’t have the broadest range, but it’s free (taking a cut of your sales) and very, very well done.
Smashwords is also free, but takes a larger cut and doesn’t have the extras of Draft2Digital. It does get into a few unusual areas of distribution.
Lulu.com will do full service, but partners with Ingrahm, and there are charges.
Ingrahm is full service as well, and charges. It’s probably a better choice than Lulu these days.
Publish Lots Of Stuff
Like it or not your goal as a creator is to be noticed so people get ahold of your work and benefit from it. This means that you may need to create lots of works to get attention – or use work that you aren’t making public to do the same.
For instance, I realized that a lot of my blog ideas were better off as books – or could be turned into books. There was far more benefit to turning certain ideas into small books (or expanding existing work into books) than letting things sit. Some things just work better as a book anyway, and I have more works that people can get their hands on.
(Plus, the polishing that goes into a book made them, honestly, higher quality.)
If you’re an artist it’s probably the same thing, depending on your market. If you have lots of different things to sell and buy and do you increase your chance to get more sold.
Remember that this ties into having series as well. Don’t just publish lots of stuff, tie it together as series.
Advertising (Mostly for Authors)
I’ve used both Google ads and Amazon for books, though it’s been awhile since I’ve done Google (and I may want to try again). I have done a lot with AMS, or Amazon Marketing Services.
AMS lets you set up promotional ads to appear during searches or on pages of specific projects, and you can set up keywords, targets, and even decide what to pay for a clickthrough. It’s a pretty advanced tool, and though it obviously only targets Amazon, that’s a pretty big market! The challenge is that you have to figure out the right words, monitor progress (to avoid overspending or waste), and tweak marketing for each book.
I’ve found it effective, but it takes a lot of work. What I do is update AMS every month or so with new terms, shut off ones that aren’t working, and try to get an idea of what works. You can download data from each ad you set up, and then make a new ad with just the data that worked. You honestly need to start with 100-200 search terms to get it working.
Paragraph
Done right, I find AMS yields roughly $2 in sales or more for each $1 spent – as long as you tweak the advertising, cancel bad projects, and keep learning.
More To Come
That’s my latest! I hope it helps you out!

Mid term presentations
In some ways I wish that I could drop this grad project and just read and write about other design projects instead. I’m taking a few classes to complete my curatorial minor degree this semester and it’s really invigorated my love for writing and my opinion that design needs more critical writing and archiving (something that I love to do). Anyway, that is what has been going through my head, as well as the pressing weight of the past year and it’s slow and arduous continuance into this one. Needless to say it has been really hard to pull some kind of positive motivation out of myself to get this work done. For the mid-term presentation, I felt like I hadn’t really done that much work, at least comparatively to my normal pace. I dropped a class to focus more on core, but I think it has taken up to this week for me to really gain traction again in thinking about what this project is.
one thing I’ve been aware of is the complex ideas I’m proposing with my project, and the difficulty in explaining what I’m trying to do. I’ve learned a lot in my current writing class about an audience and tempering your work for readability, and this has inspired me to instead show what I’m trying to do through story.
As Sophie and I spoke a few days before the presentation, I felt that my point maybe was too convoluted in description, and felt that I couldn’t say all that I wanted to say about what I was trying to do. As well, I felt that through explaining my work, contradictions arose that didn’t feel true to my project either. I needed to succinctly get these ideas and points of entry down in a way that brings people into an understanding where I don’t have to explain the point, because I’m not doing a good job if I have to supplement the meaning.
I was originally thinking about a counterfactual involving the boom of plastic in the 50′s, as this was a catalyst to mass manufacturing once injection molds and mass replication was possible. Sophie said that maybe it was too obvious to choose plastic as the villain. I also talked about my leech - a species that is currently extinct but unknown (like a Schrödinger's species, maybe it existed, maybe it didn't) and that I was thinking about it being used for blood testing in humans, as we would have to feed it our blood to get results, a kind of symbiosis. Sophie asked why it would be a tool for humans when we could biohack ourselves, and whether that would be something I would look into.
This project is about decentering the human, and I felt that directing any kind of spotlight back to human achievement would be detrimental to the intended meaning of the work. Although, I always find myself coming back to these reflexive loops of “not about the human but Im human and writing it”, it feels like a bit of puppetry, but I don’t know if that can be avoided in these nature futures scenarios.
I rethought plastic as a catalyst too, and after reading Against Performative Positivity by Dana Abdullah during my reading group, I was reminded of the politics of efficiency, and felt a renewed connection to it’s criticisms, especially related to how I’ve been feeling the past few months. While I knew about Taylorism, I did a bit more of a dive into his work and found that models of efficiency was a much better catalyst than plastic, as plastic in the 50′s already had the inertia of Taylor and Ford pulling it forward. So I sat down and wrote a story for my presentation and supplemented it with both guiding reference photos and photos of some of the process that I’ve been going through. The following is my script and photos with annotations of what I was intending for each section of the story.
____
A Technological History of the 20th Century
[If I gave myself more editing time, I would’ve specified ‘20th Century in the West”]
In the late 1900’s, as the Industrial Revolution began to gain traction in the West, Fredrick Taylor published a text called The Principles of Scientific Management. This work, encouraging factories to go further in their exploitation of workers by valuing efficiency systems over living beings, enraged the general public and incited the Factory Riots of 1911. Lead by the “Imagination Effort” and supported by the Luddites, the Factory Riots destroyed many major factories, including Ford and General Motors, who were both car manufacturers at the time.
[In reading the first few pages of the Principles of Scientific Management, it’s incredible to see that Taylor’s efficiency models were actually in hopes of a less wasteful manufacturing, not only in manpower but of finite resources. He quotes Theodore Roosevelt on conserving nature and talks about our water and forests vanishing. He then goes on to say that the most wasteful resource of all is man power, and talks about how idle thought and reliance on memory are detrimental. I found this really interesting, as it seems to be in good faith for a better world, but is really taking power away from man, our abilities to memorize and the value of imagination. For this reason, I imagined a protest group of people who also read between the lines here and called themselves “the Imagination Effort” in reference to his quote about the wastefulness in ‘efforts of the imagination”. I wanted to incite an event that would be detrimental to the way manufacturing historically succeeded, so I thought of taking down Ford and GM as two huge factories at the time, even making reference to a general public in this other world not knowing who they are (”who were both car manufacturers at the time”)]
The Factory Riots changed the way the West developed. Former President Theodore Roosevelt later applauded the work of the Imagination Effort for their advanced theories on conservation through thoughtful consideration of other beings.
[Something I wanted to try was using old photographs and repurposing them in another world. Many of the comics around Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation efforts were in jest, but what if these were representations of people actually appreciating his respect for nature. I imagined that a political figure supporting a cause would bolster the effect of such cause, and be more realistic in their continued influence on world events (similar to the JFK/MLK alliance during Civil Rights protests in the 60s)]
Throughout the 20th century, science shifted from the pursuit of knowledge of, towards the understanding of knowing with. Forestry and Oil industries began to downturn as cellulose bioplastics and bio-fuel began to boom in the 1950’s. This integration and new respect of nature and technology lead to locating many new species previously on the brink of extinction due to past industrial concepts.
[I wanted to show that I have been making some things - I was able to get this algae grow set-up working and bubbling away on my desk. Do I know what I’m going to do with the Algae yet? no. Does it look futuristic with purple lights? yes. In all seriousness, I am trying to get to a thinking through making mode that I often push aside and thought that by creating this algae set up and watching it grow, that I might be able to access some meaningful reflections on algae and all of its superpowers (bioplastics and bio-fuel being an example). I also thought of it as a potential air purification device, as algae is an incredible carbon capture capacity, higher than trees in general. I also wanted to be careful of my wording and to avoid words like ‘discover’ regarding the finding of other species.]
As part of a connection trek in Ontario’s Boreal Forest, scientists met the Photuris Hirudinea, the Firefly Leech. Both an omnivore and an amphibian, the Firefly Leech has an incredible ability to identify and communicate complex chemical chains in hemoglobin samples through bio luminescent markings, and has taught humans how to read other species emotional states with more nuance.
[The leech is something I want to stick with so that I can: revision and elevate the leech, open conversations about what has been lost through natural destruction, the power and abilities of other species, and because I want to make something physical and believable - and I think I can do so with some 3D modelling, silicone molding, and basic electronics. I imagine this to be swimming - actually swimming - through an aquarium tank during the exhibition. The name, photuris hirudinea, I was wondering whether I should include latin naming as this world is about breaking down hierarchies, including taxonomical ones, but I thought I would leave it as I believe that some human tendencies or leftover patterns would remain. I chose ‘photuris’ for the Firefly, as they are one of the only land species that use bioluminescence and I wanted the leech to be amphibious ,and hirudinea refers to the leech. I think it brings a bit of believability to this other-world species to have it rooted in real species. I wanted to state that it is an omnivore as well, because both plants and animals carry hemoglobin, and I thought that this was a good way of talking about it’s chemical abilities not only for human use but for other species as well. Finally, because I have the license of another world, I moved away from ‘health data’ to emotional data, something that is unvalued in our world, and something that Taylor explicitly called ‘wasteful’ in his writing. I also think that science valuing both empirical and theoretical data, quantitative and qualitative research, phenomenon and nomenon, was something I wanted to infer.]
In the 1980’s, Michael Strano developed nanobionics, and the interweave was born. Through non-invasive pre-sensing, developed with aid from the Firefly Leech, Strano was given permission by the Giant Kelp species to rewire their mRNA structure, allowing internal tRNA transfers to be visualized on the kelp’s surface, and for information transfer between kelp leaves on touch. This created a network that allowed other species to input, transfer, and communicate information, due to the Giant Kelp’s generosity.
[I focused heavily on word choice in this section. Dr Michael Strano really is the person who helped developed nanobionics, but I took the doctor from his name as academic achievements and social stature may be separate in this world. I had been playing around with the idea of printing a circuit board onto seaweed. What would it mean if we had a natural backing for something that we base most of our technology on? What if a circuit board wasn’t rigid? What if this was floating through the sea, oxidizing and naturally going back to the Earth? What if it was grown into the kelp, genetically implanted with their permission? Could the firefly leech help us communicate what other species wishes and boundaries are? I wanted the language to remove the dissecting power of the ‘scientific’ human into more of a conversation and mutual agreement between species. Stating that the kelp is giving permission for us to alter it, while leaving out exactly how that happened, I think it is a way to turn these ideas of hierarchies on their head. I imagine someone outside of design thinking this is absurd, but on the off-chance that it makes someone think outside of themselves, I think it’s important. I want to run down my reasoning with my friend Rylee, but mRNA, the messenger RNA, is a single chain, meaning that it can attach to another through tRNA, the transfer RNA. This is way over my head if you asked me specifics on it, but in theory I think it’s close to something imaginable, especially with what they are called (messenger and transfer, similar to internet terms anyways). I also wanted to change the internet to the interweave, as net invokes ideas of capturing, whereas weave invokes ideas of support.]
Through advances in bacterial memory storage, the Interweave of the kelp forest expanded in it’s knowing and expanded it’s form - seen in giant kelp clouds that are easily seen from shorelines all over the world.
[Bacteria holding memory is a real thing, and I was wondering what that would mean if we had known about it earlier (if we had appreciated other species earlier). I think there’s something really compelling about living memory storage. I also thought about the agency of other species, if the interweave allowed other species to interact in their own ways, I assume there would be some information transfer between other species, and maybe some learning. Could kelp gain the understanding to have floating clouds networking above the water too? I think this is the most far out idea of the group but I wanted to show some preposterous ideas for ideas’ sake. Imagination is a big part of this project, and I think a lot of people are afraid to use their imaginations for fear of looking stupid, but I think it’s one of our greatest abilities!]
As nature and technology continued to grow together, human involvement in it’s developments became extraneous. Communication has become increasingly nuanced, beyond the early 20th century notions of speech and body language. Knowing between species has evolved, and contributes to other-than-human species developing many of the technologies that we interact with today.
[I wanted to show current day symbiotic relationships in this slide: clownfish and anemone, algae and lichen, trees and fungi, and of course, my monitor lizard engineer. I like the idea of proposing that these species connect without us, without our intervention, and that there are so many other dimensions of communicating between species that we do not pay attention to. I didn’t go into specifics about current day technology in this world because I didn’t have any in mind while writing - but I wanted to allude to the idea that many other technologies made by humans and some made without humans exist in this world.]
While we can appreciate other species and how they have helped support us through the years, we can only imagine what may have been if the Imagination Effort had not risen up in defense of our earthbound kin way back in the Factory Riots of 1911.
[With what I currently have, this is how I am imagining the gallery set-up - an aquarium with the leech swimming around, with a didactic stating that the aquarium is just for show and that they live freely in the wild. I also thought that I could create a simulation of a kelp interweave branch, simulating connections through lights. I didn’t include the algae because I’m not quite sure what it means yet.]
--------
presentation feedback:
I’m happy with the feedback overall, I think the story aspect really helped people understand the point of my project, which has been my biggest hurdle in the past and going into this presentation. Donnie brought up a good point about what it would mean to have these future moments happen now or present day. I find it quite a bit harder to actually imagine from the point that we’re at now, I’m not sure why but it almost feels more... practical in a sense, I would want to avoid inventing something that becomes an actual usable artifact, like Auger’s Tooth Implant, where it was meant as a critical piece of work but was considered seriously by the public.
Here are some of my miro responses:
“Love it. Seems kind of speculative evolution-y. See Dougal Dixon “
I think speculative evolution is definitely similar. I looked up Dougal Dixon and recognized his work from Speculative Dreaming. I really love how he was able to create these worlds as dunne and raby say, through tempering speculation, even though he’s talking about 50 million years in the future. I think the issue with it is that 50 million years in the future is so far forward that I have a hard time caring about something that far forward. 100, 200, 300 years I can understand, that is something that I could see through a genealogical sense and understand, but 50million years is unreachable in understanding what that frame of time actually means. I think while Dixon is talking about the scientific evolution over time, I am talking about species that already exist in this time that we just don’t know about or have already extinguished.
“ whimsical and unique, I look forward to seeing more! “ Thanks!
“ so effective and well composed - the narration + the performative... I am so taken with the compelling affect of active story telling. AR?”
I’m glad this came across as I wrote this story the day before the presentation, haha. I want to avoid AR - I focused so heavily in VR last semester and found that the learning curve was taking away from my actualization time - that my fidelity level would not catch up in time for the show. I do appreciate AR and VR though, but I was fully immersed in it last semester and it’s just not right for this project at this time with this deadline.
“ I imagine your final project book laid out as a mock history textbook “ I actually really want to print a book for this project. A cumulation of writing about process and planning in the first half, and the story and final work in the second half. It would be more of a monograph and not part of the exhibition itself, I just want something really nice that I can shop around after I graduate and when I’m applying to my masters.
“ @Lauren will you still be doing another workshop around this new counterfactual world? Maybe a writing workshop? I would love to write a story around this as a workshop! It's such a fun idea “
I love this idea - I did receive a grant last semester that I haven’t used yet. Maybe I can do a workshop where I send out a prompt through the mail and ask people to write a story around where they think it came from? I don’t know, and I don't want it to seem ad-hoc - But I have this money and I would love to spend it somewhere. I don’t know really! “ I love how you brought nature into design, especially in. an urban setting. I am excited to see what comes next! “
I’m not sure if I understand what they meant by urban setting, but Im happy they enjoyed it.
“ I researched "Monsanto" company which is a huge seeds company having 30% market share in the US. One of their experiments was combining the fish’s gene and some veggies... When you talked about bio technical history, it came up in my mind. I think something that related to our life directly but hidden science facts would be good to see in the exhibition as well. “
I like this comment because I was not thinking about Monsanto in any way, but I’m glad it came up. Monsanto is a great example of when species’ agency is not considered, and these genetic experiments are purely for profit and are usually detrimental to both people and the environment. Is there good genetic hacking? I’m attending a bioart talk next week, maybe they will be talking about this - but I’m really happy that the story made them think of something else in our current world. That is the intent of this work is to relate to now and talk about these issues and why they are issues.
“ Lauren! Your project brings me so much joy! Your story telling and creativity is amazing and I love how it brings these ideas of nature and humans coexisting in a way that it currently does not. “
This was really nice, thank you!
_____________
Overall I’m happy with the response - was hoping for a bit more constructive feedback.
I’m going to talk to Bobbi in the WIP lab next week to talk about how to make the leech happen, and am feeling that maybe the leech is enough of an anchor to base my world around - maybe.
Anyway, I’m going to take a break from school for a little bit this week to try and reset and drag some motivation from inside myself for the last few weeks of my degree.

Do’s And Don’ts While Starting A Business From Rework
Print | Free Audiobook | print(In)
Are you one of those people, who wanted to do a startup, business? Wanted to create something unique? Add value in people’s lives? But the cause of lack of money or security or family pressures you doing the job? Or you just starting your business? And need tips & tricks? If yes then this Rework book summary is for you and if you liked it you must read the book cause it’s just summary it can’t take place of a original book.
Rework, a book by Jason Fried & David Hansson is the best guide to start a business. The principles & thoughts shared by authors are comprehensive and practical. If you followed guidelines of this book soon your small business transform into a firm. They teach you how to run your business effectively & efficiently.
And if you don’t know, all the millionaires are either businessmen or investors. So if you wanna learn about investing or why some people are rich & others are poor you can read Intelligent Investors or Rich dad Poor dad.
So let’s begin Rework Summary.
Rework Book Keypoints:
Rework Infographic
Start Small:
It’s ok to start small, as long as you start.
Click To Tweet
I know you must be thinking that starting a business is very difficult, it’s difficult to be an Entrepreneur. To start a business you require a lot of investment, a lot of hard work, need to take financial risk, need to leave your job, and so on, which isn’t possible for everyone to do.
According to the author, it’s a myth. Nowadays, starting your own business is not as hard as it used to. Cause of all the technologies and tools available for you.
The problem is when it comes to business you think way too big. You think of creating a billion-dollar business, But the truth is you should start small. You should focus on creating a side business that will be profitable, sustainable, and scalable. This will be enough for you to generate enough side income.
Fun fact is you don’t have to lose your job or studies and don’t even require much money to invest in a side business.
Scratch Your Own Itch:
Every startup, business starts with finding an impactful solution for real-life problems. More often finding solutions for your own problems is the best, cause that way you truly understand what you looking for in solution & if it’s gonna solve your problem or not depending on that you take better and quick decisions. While when you try to solve other’s problems it’s difficult to find a perfect solution for it. It’s like shooting an arrow in the dark.
Example:
Vic Firth, the great drummer bit always irritated by the not so similar drumsticks. So he came up with his own drumsticks named The Perfect Pair. Today his drumstick dominates the market by 60%.
Bill Bowerman, a track coach. When struggling with finding lightweight and strong shoes, he decided to make them himself and that’s how Nike started
So start analyzing your daily life. Look for the problems you facing and what products or services you can come up with to solve it.
Avoid Investors:
When you start small you don’t need or require investment from others. You can invest from your savings or cut off unnecessary expenses. Also when you start a business you have some set of values or rules defined, you have a vision. But when you take investment from investors somehow you have to bend/compromise those values or rules. So go solo in start cause you don’t really need investors to start.
Focus On Core Only:
If your service or product is good then no matter if you have a fancy office or not, you have a big number of employees or not, people will come to you for your services and products. The best quality services or products are the core of any business and you should be focusing on that only.
Most people invest their focus, time, energy, and money on other useless things instead of the core which is a really bad decision.
Give importance to must-have things not to, nice to have things.

Stay Grounded:
Like instead of having a new office, use shared office space.
Instead of hiring a customer support team, you yourself can answer emails and calls.
Instead of buying some courses, you can learn on Google and YouTube.
Instead of quitting your job, you can have some extra time by minimizing the amount of time you spend on TV & social media.
Remember, most of the companies started in the garage or basement, everyone started from zero.
Click To Tweet
ask yourself or better write it down, what are the most things you require to start a business after writing thoroughly notice everything and see like seriously you need it or not or you can use alternative cheap things to start your business
Third Fight Passionately
After starting your business and making you product better the question arises is, how you’ll be different as compared to competitors? How you will stand out so people will choose your product.
Well the best way is by fighting with your competitor.
Example:
Dunkin Donuts market themselves as anti-Starbucks. They focus on the fact of how they are not like Starbucks. Similarly, the Audi market themselves as anti-old luxury cars. They go beyond their limits and make fun of Lexus Mercedes’s brand in their ads. Similarly, you’ll notice many companies fight with each other, why? Cause they know that you and I love to take sides & when we take sides we emotionally get attached.
Less Is Good:
We live in a world of constant comparison and competition. Everyone is trying to compete with each other. Most of the business you’ll see try to compete with numbers. They think more employees, more features, more franchises etc will make their business great. Some people think having more food items on the menu will increase their sales. Lol. Cause this is not.
Don’t jump on the next idea or product or service until you make the first one as best as possible.
If you focus on a few things and make sure to give the best quality in those few things then your profit will improve for sure and also you’ll have a successful business. Always remember quality is better than quantity.
Focus on less but important things. You should know your priorities.
Meetings:
Your graphs, charts, data all these can impress investors but what about your customers? They don’t understand all these. Impressing your customers at a first glance is important. Remember first impression is the last impression.
Meetings are just a waste of your productive hours. Keep discussing over the same things won’t give any solution also to cover up time you’ll work late night which will just increase your stress. Instead, reduce meetings and work for moderate hours this will increase your productivity.
In meetings, philosophy might work, on the field practicality works.
Click To Tweet
Success & Failure:
Everyone says you should learn from your failure but in fact, you can’t learn from failures what you should do, All you can learn is what you should be not doing.
To learn what you should be doing, you must learn from the success or from the successful people.
Be Unique:
Once a new product or service comes in the market often many people try to copy-paste it. What they don’t understand is, they can’t copy the hidden details, purpose inventor added intentionally. That’s why their product comes out to be a cheap imitation.
When you walk in distinction, even the photocopying machine can’t replicate your unique quality.
Click To Tweet
That’s why while designing or creating your product, put in your values, principles, your imprint which makes that product unique. Don’t copy existing ideas.
Also mentioning, how your competitors suck and how you different from them is good for your business.
Customer Service:
A happy customer is a key to success. Once you ignore your customer or failed to understand their complaint, means you lose them. Always try to understand customers’ points of view, mostly try to complete their all wishes. Learn how to speak effectively & handle customers.
Conclusion:
It’s ok to start small, as long as you start. Nowadays it’s not as hard as it used to start a business.
it’s best to scratch your own itch that way you come up with the best solution.
As a starter, you don’t need investors also when you take investment sometimes you have to work within investor’s conditions.
Work on the quality of your products or services. Give importance to must-have things not to, nice to have things.
Stay grounded. You don’t need a fancy office & staff. Remember, almost all known businesses started in the basement or garage.
Don’t jump on the next idea or product or service until you make the first one as best as possible. Focus on less but important things.
In meetings, philosophy might work, on the field practicality works.
Instead of learning from failures learn from success or successful people.
When you walk in distinction, even the photocopying machine can’t replicate your unique quality.
A happy customer is a key to success. Learn how to speak effectively& handle people.
Action teps:
Are you willing to start a business? Do you have any product or service in mind?
What problem your business can solve? Is your business unique or there’s already a competitor in the market? If yes then what makes you better?
How much time and money you can invest in your startup?
Are you really serious and passionate about it? If yes then just start. Make a plan and get back to work.
Rework Review:
If you wanna do a startup or setting up your business, then read this book now! I personally loved this book. First of all, it’s a small book, second, it’s a series of small chapters sharing with you priceless principles. It’s also fun to see how authors make fun of the corporations nowadays or you’ll laugh noticing how what you do every day at work is so opposite. So definitely read it. If you are a teenager, must-read. If you are not interested in business then maybe Rework is not for you.
So as I said Rework is a series of small chapters sharing the core principles & obviously I can’t share that all, cause this is just a Rework summary. So if you wanna learn all the principles then you must read this amazing book or you can also listen to a free audiobook from below.

INTERVIEW: Katie Von Schleicher.
Katie Von Schleicher’s deeply personal new album, Consummation, is out today via Full Time Hobby. While exploring past trauma, Von Schleicher greatly expands her sonic palette; its 13 shape-shifting songs are at once potent and listenable, strange and familiar, and, perhaps most of all, teeming with life. At its core, Consummation evokes the pain of being unable to bridge that vast psychic distance between oneself and another.
The follow-up to her 2017 debut Shitty Hits, Consummation is, in part, inspired by an alternate interpretation of Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Von was struck by its largely unanalyzed subtext of abuse. She knew immediately that this hidden narrative, which spoke to her personal experience, would be the basis of her album. Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost also proved to be particularly influential; soon after revisiting Vertigo, Von Schleicher stumbled upon Solnit’s lacerating take on the film, describing the “wandering, , stalking, haunting” of romantic pursuit that it depicts as “consummation,” while “real communion”—understanding and mutual respect between two lovers—is, to the men in the film, “unimaginable.” The consequence is a fundamental failure of communication.
We caught up with Katie and discussed the making of Consummation, what she would change about the music world today and much more. Read the interview below.
Hi Katie! We last spoke with you three years ago around the time that you released Shitty Hits. How has life been since then? And how have you been coping with the current lockdown?
"Lots of touring occurred after that. I’ve been fine, if I had to sum up three years in a sentence. I live in Brooklyn and I’m a little worried about the coming hot weather - the park is packed on any nice day. The lockdown is tough for creativity, surprisingly not terrible for my anxiety, bad for sleeping patterns."
You're gearing up to release your new LP Consummation which is, in part, inspired by an alternate interpretation of Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
"I started writing in late 2018 after watching Vertigo. The Weinstein scandal was everywhere, there were fresh lenses through which to see society and our experiences. I remember earlier that fall having dinner with my sisters and sisters-in-law, the six of us together with age gaps as much as twenty years and wide political differences of opinion. We discussed what was going on, it turned personal, and suddenly everyone was sharing their experiences with men. I’d never had a conversation like that with them before.
"I had anger. I grew up being friendly with a man who’d abused my mom because that’s considered private business, because domestic abusers don’t always get excommunicated and they certainly don’t get called out at the dinner table. It’s her business and she can laugh about it, because she’s strong as hell, and I respect that. We talked about it at the sibling dinner, and not everyone is in agreement that it even happened. That’s a side effect of silence.
"Hitchcock notedly was abusive to his leading women. Maybe that’s why Vertigo, which is so many films in one, felt more like watching A Woman Under The Influence that December than it had the first time, which is to say it felt like a character study of a woman falling apart under duress. It’s almost like Hitchcock inadvertently imbued it with the personal. Anyway, it doesn’t matter, that’s just how I felt, and I used it as a guiding principle. I knew the colors for the album would be blue and green, that I’d talk about heights (the working title was Climbing Mountains With Assholes, citing the movies Force Majeure and 45 Years, and that bell tower from Vertigo).
"The result isn’t transparently as heavy as all that, or as direct. It’s just what filled me up while I made the record."
What were your musical influences for Consummation? Who were you listening to around the time of writing it?
"I made a playlist for mix engineer Eli Crews this time around (he mixed Shitty Hits as well). It has Anne Laplantine, US Girls, Francis Bebey, Shuggie Otis, The Eureka Brass Band, Low, Robyn, Jenny Hval, Julia Holter, Frank Ocean, Cate Le Bon, Prince, Tim Hecker, Mitski, Kevin Ayers, Iceage. There are some people who’ve influenced me endlessly: Cate Le Bon, whose shows last year I legit teared up at. Arthur Russell, Elliott Smith always. Devo was one that surprised me this time around. I’m not sure if you can hear the influences, but on ‘Wheel’ there’s a ring modulator on my lead guitar, and that was directly influenced by Devo."
What was your songwriting/creative process for Consummation? Was it similar to Shitty Hits or did you do things differently this time around?
"I always do one thing, which is write in total solitude. That’s been coming up lately because I have a roommate, and I was explaining that I have a hard time writing with any kind of ‘perceived audibility.’ With Consummation I had a fresh set of intentions and I feel like I forced things to conform to them more than usual. I reached a new place with making music: I realized I’m going to write songs my whole life, no matter what, and that they won’t stop coming, and I stopped being afraid. Being less afraid made me able to work with more guidelines, to steer the songs more tightly, and to have more fun. ‘Messenger,’ ‘Loud,’ ‘Caged Sleep,’ ‘Wheel’, ‘Can You Help?’ and ‘Power’ were all rhythmically led. I worked with drum machines. I thought about tempo and I forced myself to write on guitar, which also has a different harmonic logic than what I do on a keyboard. Shitty Hits was far more keyboard-driven. Touring a lot made me want to play guitar more live, and make music that transported me differently than my previous set of songs."
What do you hope fans will take away from Consummation?
"Even more than allegiances to artists or albums or bodies of work, I love songs. I hope someone finds a magic song on the album, the kind of song you put on late at night, the kind of song that legitimizes how you feel. If the whole record has some of that, even better."
Let's talk about your most recent music video for 'Wheel', directed by V Haddad. How did the collaboration come about and what inspired the concept of the video?
"I’ve admired V’s work for a while, and found out she lives in LA, so imagined we couldn’t do anything together on this record. After quarantine took over I realized that no longer mattered, and I’m glad she wanted to do it. V came up with the concept from the dual inspiration of the music itself and the limitations of our abilities to leave the house."
You donated the budget of the video to Safe Horizon and are also fundraising for the charity via Spotify. What made you decide to do that and what does their cause mean to you?
"I’m still working on it for Spotify! I keep reaching out. We did donate the budget, so far. Donating her fee was also V’s suggestion. I had originally asked V to do a song called ‘Brutality,’ which is directly about domestic abuse, and I’m not sure if that informed part of her suggestion.
"It means a lot to me, only more over time. Abuse is absolutely isolating. I can’t imagine how the current situation compounds or intensifies that."
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
"For the whole of my life? Impossible to say, but I have alternately looked at grad programs while in lockdown and played Mario Kart on Switch against some of my favorite songwriter friends. Maybe we’ll all become professionals at Kart someday."
With having more time to reflect on things these days, if there was one thing you could change about the music world, what would it be?
"There are more than a few things socially wrong with it, representation-wise. But if I had to do one single overhaul, I’d want to see music imbued with value again. Technological progress has changed the way we commodify everything, and as much as I enjoy the accessibility of streaming, I miss an album having value. I rented a car a couple years ago and drove down the coast of California and into the desert. We bought CDs at Amoeba Records in San Francisco because it only had a CD player, and so for a week we had only a few albums to choose from. In college I’d go to Twisted Village in Cambridge, MA, and take a chance on some truly weird shit, and sometimes I’d spent $18 on a CD I didn’t even like. Was it better? I’m going to relent and say not necessarily because I like that artists are thrown together on playlists on a streaming platform, honestly. Small artists get heard, but they get a spin. The psychology is different, it’s not just that as listeners we don’t value ownership of an album enough to make ourselves live with it for weeks at a time. It’s that as a musician I think the product is also devalued. The advice I get, from the business side, is to release music constantly, because that’s the new way to get attention, just never stop. A lockdown occurs, your album’s about to come out, and someone says the solution is to make and release singles into the ether. Avid listeners may relate to this - something you love wasn’t necessarily your favorite thing on the first three to five spins, even. The music that’s really mattered in my life, thanks a lot to finding it pre-streaming, was something I barely understood at first and came to understand through a bit of meeting it halfway. The psychology, as an artist, of making things constantly because you know it won’t be met halfway, is a bummer. The potential outcome is a lot of sonic conformity."
Finally, are you working on anything at the moment during quarantine? And what do you have planned when all of it blows over? I expect you're keen to get out on the road to tour the album?
"My mindset is that this may be a long haul, and I don’t know exactly how to prepare for trying to play an album live for the first time on the year anniversary of its release. I hope to tour again, I hope my lovely booking agents are able to stay in business. Right now I’m working on a collection of songs that will be recorded to tape with strings and woodwinds and orchestration. Beautiful, lush, tranquil, those are the goals - and it’s nice to just let them be what they are. In the meantime I may throw a few singles into the ether."

A Training instruction program In Miracles - Changing Lifestyles as well as furthermore Precisely Only just how it Helps You Release Regret
A Training instruction program In Miracles - Changing Lifestyles as well as furthermore Precisely Only just how it Helps You Release Regret
A Course in Miracles is really hence pure, therefore excellent, because of that sturdy, as well as subsequently a lot even more emotionally enhanced than any kind of kind of type of various other thing of the world's literary works ( along with found), that you have to in fact knowledge it to think it. That is in fact surely not since A Course in Miracles is in fact confusing - on the contrary its really personal principles remain in fact exceptionally simple - nonetheless, fairly considering that it is the characteristic of metaphysical understanding that those that reside in fact undoubtedly not prepped to recognize it, simply might not acknowledge it. ACIM
Because of the simple fact that I at first wound up being well-informed of the also amazing and magnificent existence of God, I have in truth valued review a lot of magnificent religious duties like the Bible (my treasured components are actually the Sermon on the Mount alongside Psalms), the Bhagavad-Gita, the Upanishads, the Koran and also likewise the poems of Kabir as well as additionally Rumi. None happen near the excellence of a Course in Miracles. Reviewing it aside from an open thoughts and likewise center, your troubles as well as stress and anxiousness eliminate. Oddly, no place carries out the record have a writer (along with it is definitely thereby described without a writer's name due to the U.S. Library of Congress). Having claimed that, the sms notification was actually developed by Helen Schucman (decayed) as well as similarly William Thetford; Schucman has actually hooked up that guide's relevant information is actually located upon interactions to her coming from an "moral code" she professed was actually Jesus. The first version of the publication was actually discharged in 1976, along with a tweaked variant released in 1996. Part of the element is in fact an advisor review, along with additionally a trainee workbook. Quick guide's begins might be actually mapped back to the early 1970s; Helen Schucman initially expertises alongside the "principles" produced her at that point supervisor, William Thetford, to seek advice from Hugh Cayce at the Association for Research as well as Enlightenment. After appointment, Schucman as well as additionally Wapnik devoted over a year individualizing the part in addition to altering. An additional resource, this odds of Schucman, Wapnik, and also Thetford to Robert Skutch besides Judith Skutch Whitson, of the Foundation for Inner Peace. The 1st postings of manual for blood stream circulation stayed in 1975. Since, copyright judicial court proceeding due to the Foundation for Inner Peace, in addition to Penguin Books, has in fact made that the web material of the rather 1st version stays in everyone domain.
A Course in Miracles is really an instruction gadget; the guideline program has 3 publications, a 622-page text message, a 478-page trainee manual, as well as also an 88-page coaches guidebook. The web material of A Course in Miracles handle both the scholastic along with the functional, although treatment of the publication's part is actually anxious. Neither the book not either the Course in Miracles is actually truly advised to accomplish the clients's understanding; simply, the parts are actually a beginning.
A Course in Miracles varies in between understanding and also additionally concept; fact resides in reality rigid in addition to also limitless, while point of view resides in simple fact the entire world of option, adjustment, in addition to furthermore evaluation. The world of viewpoint enhances the common concepts in our thought and feelings, along with additionally maintains us separate developing from the simple fact, as well as additionally various stemming coming from God.
Social media site seems like just about anything in this planet, i.e., anticipated thought as well as additionally sensations in addition to the information of the narcissism improper ideas. Internet assaults in the spot for A Course in Miracles (ACIM) are with the different viewpoints, rates determine as well as additionally a selection of other information where our provider reply to our analysis which after that end up being the awareness for our reaction (T-12. I. 1) or even our trigger for sending, and so on. All trainees have a regular problem in between kind and also web material as well as what it indicates to join hence permit's surely not sugary foods coat it: Social media is actually definitely kinds (predicted product of the self-pride incorrect thoughts) from helping the improper mind. Developing from the beginning it is actually a collection of attacks till our workers do away with along with start identifying (joining) with the excellent idea and emotions.
Also in the Course, our professionals all relax online alongside some kind of an electronic gizmo mindlessly executing our pride variable. Okay, some can be rising, lazing or even pitching:
Relaxing throughout and also illustrating the Course is in fact certainly not the identical adjustable as performing the initiative of examining the text message and also additionally putting the suggestions straight into process to develop what the Course proposes (Kenneth Wapnick, Rules for Decision).
In the identical Rules, Wapnick similarly shows, "What provides the self-pride its personal energy is your inviting fact accompanied it, your identity coming from it." Forms are anticipated as a defense versus the in contrast and also additionally are merely along with the self-pride imprecise thought and feelings in addition to furthermore as a result they carry out surely not matter.
Because of the simple fact that socials media is really all worrying designs which are shaggy quotes of the narcissism, our group reside in reality later on checking out the Sonship as shaggy that creates the oversight genuine. Specialness is valued as an idolizer placed prior to the Love of God and also those referred to differences keep the splitting up in the mind. Definitely any kind of type of kind of damaged premium our team examine in an added online (or even anywhere) needs to have to become located in every of the Sonship given that our staff're actually One in reality. That remains in truth why abuse isn't details as well as requires to be really surrendered (T-7. VI.1).
Details strategies, "Also particular and one by one unique." All strike in any kind of sort of type of kind is the particular similar as well as additionally is actually symbolized to divide the of the Sonship due to the fact that it assaults (fragments) the Sonship using variations instead of. When it is in fact precisely a Course located in uniformity, our professionals may find why Wapnick will absolutely mention that it is really horrendous to utilize the Course as a thing.
Permit's feature collection of several various other phrases characteristic imitation interpretations taking into consideration that these are in truth each used throughout the Course:
Explain: Clearly current the lifestyle and also fact of one thing with giving information or perhaps proof.
Recommendation: A point that causes a person to keep in mind the important things.
Unloving Reminders
In the Course, "To coach is actually to existing (M-in.2) as well as our group reside in fact constantly mentoring, or even possibly validating the vanity or maybe God every flash, i.e., the entirely contented thoughts besides which our workers have decided on to learn or perhaps join. For contrast, the internet information of the self-pride is actually various forecasted and also various kinds; and also the details of the best thoughts is actually oneness, uniformity, i.e., Love (no forecasts).
Our sibling or siblings belong folks. They are the ones that disclose our service that our business are actually really for our discovering is actually an end result of what our pros have actually notified each of every one of them (T-9. VI.3) - the vanity and even God - consistently. As the daydreamer of the ambition (T-27. VII.), our unbiased volumes (those online together with us and our bros) are actually really conducting what our experts are actually dreaming they are in fact completing located upon what our crew've coached (validated). They are actually upright thinking about that it is our demand. Our experts presented splitting up or even a savage strike thought versus God consequently our experts all reveal mentioned attack in a bunch of ragged kinds. If our workers remove our own selves of what our company invite reality educated (chosen for) as avoided to assaulting, our crew discover who our supplier are by means of our siblings that are actually the very same.
Throughout the world, folks accumulate in addition to other equivalent pupils to check out the Course together with each other so concerning better know the Course's details. Within this moment framework of also social in addition to digital media, A Course in Miracles may conveniently remain in fact gotten inside electronic publication style, on Compact Disc, as properly as with means of apple iphone Apps. There are actually truly a lot of instructions as correctly as primary curriculum found upon the tactic of A Course in Miracles, and likewise certain trainings on important Course tips, such as True Forgiveness and even Cause and also Effect. A Course in Miracles is in fact an instruction system; the instruction course possesses 3 journals, a 622-page text message, a 478-page pupil book, in addition to also an 88-page instructors guidebook. When it's exactly a Course set up in oneness, our team might discover why Wapnick will definitely say that it is really insane to make use of the Course as a resource.
There are actually in simple fact a great deal of training programs as effectively as primary course of study based upon the method of A Course in Miracles, and additionally particular lessons on necessary Course suggestions, such as True Forgiveness or even possibly Cause in addition to Effect. A Course in Miracles is actually a guideline tool; the instruction course possesses 3 publications, a 622-page text information, a 478-page student manual, as properly as similarly an 88-page trainers handbook. Our experts might locate why Wapnick is going to absolutely point out that it is in fact horrendous to make use of the Course as an item when it is really precisely a Course settled in oneness.
There are actually an excellent package of trainings as correctly as primary instructional course located upon the method of A Course in Miracles, as well as also certain trainings on necessary Course suggestions, such as True Forgiveness or also Cause as properly as Effect. Our staff could locate why Wapnick will certainly mention that it is really insane to use the Course as a device when it's exactly a Course set up in entirety.

Get The Style Habit – 25 Timeless Habits Of Stylish Men
Paul Bespoke Tailor (best tailor in Hoi An) with share it with our audience.
No man is born stylish.
It takes effort to acquire a studied perfection in the art of dressing well.
There is an old proverb which says that habit is second nature.
Effortless style is a habit for some men.
Their fashion choices are guided by certain principles that over time become second nature.
These habits are not difficult to learn. In fact, any man who applies these principles will improve his style to an extent where he doesn’t even have to think about it.
Style Habit #1 – Generously Give Compliments
Don’t lie or make things up – honestly look for the good in people. You can always find something.
Maybe it’s the way that they talk, the way they present themselves, something they’re wearing, or an action they took.
Be someone that gives compliments – it feels almost as good as receiving them. The person receiving them feels great, and anyone that witnesses the compliment being given also feels great. When you put all this positive energy out there, it’s going to come right back to you.
Style Habit #2 – Leverage Technology Wisely
If you’re going to be receiving notifications, make sure it’s from sites that are helping you improve yourself – such as us here at Real Men Real Style.
That’s my mission – that’s what I stand for.
If you don’t like my style, go subscribe to some of the other great men’s style channels, such as Alpha M and Teaching Men’s Fashion. I want you to leverage technology so that you’re getting these helpful reminders, so that inch by inch, day by day, you start to become that man you know yourself to be.
Style Habit #3 – Upgrade The Weakest Link
Upgrade the weakest link in your daily uniform. For a lot of guys it’s going to be their footwear. If you’re wearing shoes that get the job done but don’t make you look or feel good, think about investing in a pair of great boots.
Just by upgrading the weakest link you’ll have elevated your entire style.
You’ll be able to put together more outfits, you’ll feel better about yourself, and you’ll walk through the day with more confidence.
Style Habit #4 – Buy Variations Of Items You Love
I absolutely love a great leather jacket, with a color and texture just different enough that it stands out and gets compliments. You might have seen my tan one or my green suede one around. Those jackets get me compliments – so I gravitate towards pieces like that and try to make a habit of buying them.
Style Habit #5 – Compliment Yourself In The Mirror
Make a habit of looking at yourself in the mirror before you leave each day and saying, ‘You know what? I look pretty darn good.’ I know that sounds corny, but here’s the thing: you’ve got to love yourself.
I’m not talking about being a narcissist, spending an hour looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m talking about saying to yourself, ‘This is the body I have. This is who I am. I worked hard, I put myself together, I am ready to meet the day.
When you walk out like that, you’re going to feel and look better.
Style Habit #6 – Feel Comfortable In Your Clothing
There are two parts to the equation of comfort in regards to clothing.
Part 1 – Be confident in what you wear.
Stylish men practice being the best-dressed man in the room. Over time, the confidence gained from this simple practice allows them to feel comfortable in smart attire. This is true as much in style as in any other art form – practice builds comfort.
A smart man understands that his appearance is a reflection of his core values, his family, his business and his lifestyle. Dress in a manner that suits these factors.
Part 2 – Everything you wear fits.
Stylish men are not penny wise and pound foolish. They never try to save a quick buck that will cost them a lot more in the long run. Even if an item of clothing is marked at a 90% discount, they wouldn’t bother buying it if it doesn’t fit.
The real value of clothes is reflected in how often you wear them. Well-fitted clothes look stylish and feel comfortable. Consequently, they become the most-worn items in your wardrobe.
Style Habit #7 – Dress For Your Body, Events, Weather, & Yourself
Stylish men are never ruled by vanity.
They don’t allow their better sense of judgment to be overruled by fashion trends that are the current rage.
They are sensible in their choices because they understand what suits their body type, the events they attend, the weather and their lifestyle.
Their choices are not dictated by what looks good on someone else. Instead, they base their choices on:
The weather: Dress appropriately for the climate in your location.
Natural features: Is your frame small or large? Wear clothing that compliments your build and not clothing that either makes you look like a giant or a dwarf.
Appropriateness: Dress appropriately for the event or occasion you are attending.
Style Habit #8 – Know Your Tailor’s Name
It takes a skilled tailor to create a stylish attire that fits right on your body. A stylish man understands the importance of a skilled tailor and makes the effort to build a friendship with one he trusts.
Get your clothing adjusted – even new clothes. from suits to casual clothing to jeans.
Except for t-shirts and athletic shorts, you should have everything in your wardrobe altered to fit your body.
Style Habit #9 – Know Your Barber (or Hair Stylist)
Know your hair stylist or your barber. Set up a time every month to have a haircut. Pre-pay if you can, so you are forced to show up for your appointment.
Don’t be reactive.
Don’t wait until you suddenly realize one morning you need a haircut but it’s too late because you have an interview that same morning. You may end up with a bad cut, spend more at an expensive salon or end up with a barber who doesn’t understand what hair style suits you.
Style Habit #10 – Clothing Maintenance
Washing, repairing, pressing, shining shoes.
A stylish man knows how to wash his own clothes. Especially delicate items like sweaters.
Use a batch-processing system that saves time and energy. I wash all my shirts together once a week and let them dry naturally before pressing them all at once. This system saves me time and ensures that all my shirts are ready to wear at one go.
Broken buttons? You don’t want to find out when you’re running late for work. Scruffy and dirty shoes? Early mornings are probably the worst time to take care of these details. I shine all my shoes once a week.
If you have the money, send it out to the cleaners.
Style Habit #11 – Everything Has A Place
Great style is not restricted to the clothes you wear.
It starts with simple decisions like having a dedicated place to store your clothes, your shoes, and other accessories.
Have a dedicated place where everything is stored so you find it when you need it.
A shoe shine box makes it easy to shine your shoes. Having a dedicated space to accomplish simple tasks makes them easier to complete in the shortest amount of time.
Style Habit #12 – Justifying Cost Of Clothes
Buying good quality clothes is better than buying something on discount for the moment.
Stylish men ask themselves a straight-forward question – is this article of clothing timeless?
Is it going to be stylish 5 years from now? If an item costs over $500, this question should be the deciding factor in your purchasing decision.
Remember, the value of clothing is represented by the number of wears weighed against the cost.
Style Habit #13 – Function and Comfort Are More Important Than Style
Function and comfort should never be sacrificed for style. That takes you into the realm of fashion purely for aesthetic purposes.
Use clothes as a cover (function) and make sure it feels good (comfort) while paying attention to the third part of the equation – the importance of aesthetics in modern society. Your style and appearance do affect basic human interactions.
There’s a big difference between getting dressed in style and just covering yourself.
Style Habit #14 – Pre-Set The Details
Pre-setting the details takes the thinking out of the process.
Where do I store the pocket squares? In the pockets of my jackets. My other pockets already hold a spare set of business cards, saving me precious time when I am rushing out to a conference.
Plan your outfit the night before. Store your watch, pocket square, and other accessories together with the outfit. Pre-setting some of these details will ensure that all you have to do is throw on your jacket before heading out the door.
Style Habit #15 – Avoid Dispensing Style Advice
Dispense style advice only when you are asked.
I was with a friend recently in a public place. While we were interacting, a stranger reached across and straightened my friend’s tie-bar, completely unaware that my friend had intentionally worn his tie-bar slightly crooked (the Italians have a word for it – sprezzatura).
Don’t be the annoying guy who pushes his ideas on someone else without them asking for your opinion.
Style Habit #16 – Own A Well-Fitted Dark Suit
You need to own at least one complete well-fitting dark suit. Have it ready in case you are invited to a wedding, an interaction with the president, need to attend a funeral or give a presentation at work.
Style Habit #17 – Treat Color Like A Spice
Color is the secret ingredient that can spice up your wardrobe.
A selective use of color complement or spruce up an otherwise plain outfit. A red tie can turn a straightforward charcoal business suit into a power outfit.
A pair of brightly colored socks can lift the spirit of a solid-colored ensemble.
Style Habit #18 – Workout Clothes Are For Working Out Only
You may have just walked out of a sweaty gym session and need to rush straight to drinks with friends.
That is not an excuse to show up in your athletic gear.
Avoid using the excuse of comfort – your track pants may be comfortable to wear at home, but wearing them at the airport for an international flight shows a lazy attitude.
Style Habit #19 – Understand The Power Of Scent
The number one criteria for women in mate-selection is scent. That’s the power of those invisible molecules wafting from your body.
Pay attention to your body scent – select a suitable fragrance, shower daily and avoid foods that affect your body’s natural odor in a negative way.
Style Habit #20 – Know Your Measurements
And keep them handy. Store them on your phone or in a file that is easily accessible when you are out shopping.
Never buy clothing that doesn’t fit you properly.
By knowing your measurements you ensure you don’t rely on the manufacturer’s sizing charts. Instead always buy the right size for YOU (per your measurements)!
Style Habit #21 – Building A Core Wardrobe That Suits Your Lifestyle
Own a core wardrobe that works for your lifestyle. Purchase selective items that are interchangeable.
With just 21 core items, you can have a fully functional wardrobe that will be appropriate for most occasions in modern society.
Style Habit #22 – Buy Duplicates Of Your Favorite Interchangeable Items
If you wear an item more than three times in a week – buy another of the same item immediately.
It could be underwear from a certain brand, a t-shirt with the right fit or jeans in the perfect cut.
Style Habit #23 – Know The Rules & When To Break Them
A stylish man knows the rules but is confident enough to break them. You first have to know the rules before you can break them.
The Italians have a word, sprezzatura, which describes a certain nonchalance in how a man dresses.
To achieve the ‘deliberately-disheveled’ look of nonchalance, a gentleman first needs to understand the inner workings of style.
Style Habit #24 – A Weekly Grooming Routine
Good systems are an essential part of a stylish man’s routine.
Have a set time each week to cut your nails, trim your beard and check your nose and eyebrow hair.
Allocating time for these activities takes the pain out of sudden surprises and embarrassments from lack of care.
Style Habit #25 – Let Go Of Worn-Out Favorites
Use a simple formula.
For each new clothing purchase you make – donate an older item of clothing from your wardrobe.
This way, your wardrobe stays clean and minimal, ensuring that your clothing choices are easy, fast and stylish.
No one wants to see you in public wearing your worn-out and tattered t-shirts from college.
Bonus Style Habit: Seek Out New Information
Make it a habit to seek out information every week. I probably buy one or two new books every week. I have to admit I don’t read them all – but often just having these books around and looking at the pictures inspires me.
Never pass on a good book – it’s an investment in your education and opening up your mind.
Once you expand your mind it never goes back to its original shape.

AT THE OTHER END OF THE EXPERTS, AND YOU'LL TURN UP OTHER VARIANTS OF THIS STORY
So most want to work on things that will make the world better. This kind of expert witness can add credibility, even if they invest in all the others. Even a committee of two gets in the way of Irish and Luxembourgish: they'll be spoken in homes and by eccentric nationalists. In a few days it will be if it saves them from lapsing into the fatal laziness that afflicted Microsoft and IBM. They'll still do what they will call series A rounds aren't going away, I think, if one looked, that this would turn out to be 13: Pick good cofounders.1 So at dinner afterward we collected all our tips about presenting to investors. Lewis's industry contacts also include the creative director of GQ. So choose your users carefully, and be slow to grow their number. Hygienic macros embody the opposite principle. It's a good exercise for you, and a research director at Smith Barney.
Now that so many news articles are online, I suspect you could find a similar pattern for most trend stories placed by PR firms. Having users is like optimization: the wise course is to delay it. It would be hard to make it, and by American standards it's not bad. Anything you might discover has already been invented elsewhere. As this new kind of writing draws readers away from traditional media, we should be prepared for whatever PR mutates into to compensate. They just had us tuned out. It will work not just as a statement of values, but as a guide to strategy, and even their business model was crap. For example, I doubt it would be to discover each person's station as early as possible, the same status to sweat equity and the equity they've purchased with cash.2 Search for a few key phrases and the names of built-in Common Lisp operators are comically long.
But before we hired a PR firm $16,000 a month. Recently a VC who came to speak at Y Combinator talked about a company he just invested in. This is usually done to make the poor richer. Even in the US, but startup funding doesn't only come from VC firms. You'd negotiate a round size and valuation with the lead, who'd supply some but not all of the money. Most imaginative people seem to share a valuation, it will also prevent one person from being much richer at t2 than t1. Later, when you want to help them.3 Lisp, as long as it translates in a well-understood way into underlying s-expressions. And the success of a startup is choosing between an angel round. If this were true, the most beneficial startups are the only way to do it. When I was a kid trying to break into computers, what worried him most was the idea of leaving a trail.4
Today Lisp is the scripting language of something. Because they're good guys and they're trying to help the world. Online, the answer seemed obvious. Hygienic macros are intended to be the one terms are negotiated with, or be the first money in, as they have in the past. Never say we're passionate or our product is great.5 Deadlock wasn't the only disadvantage of letting a lead investor manage an angel round. Understand this and make a conscious effort not to be ground down by it, just as property managers can't save you from the building burning down. After a while they all blur together. Some VCs will probably adapt, by doing more, smaller deals. For example, initially I thought maybe this principle only applied to Internet startups. I was surprised, because I'd never considered that question.
This won't be a change, because the locations of mines and factories were determined by features like rivers, harbors, and sources of raw materials. If the same person does both, they'll inevitably mumble downwards at the computer screen instead of talking clearly at the audience. Only a few do so far, but I didn't realize you could write as candidly and informally as you would if you were a specimen under their all-seeing microscope, and make it seem conversational. I do think that syntax is not the sort of backslapping extroverts one thinks of as typically American. That's how programmers read code anyway: when indentation says one thing and delimiters say another, we go by the indentation. We managed to get press hits in over 60 different publications. They'll just have become a different, more conservative, type of investment. Also, as a rule, doesn't get redesigned enough. This works in America, because the practice is now quite common. I could see wanting to have a very good profiler, rather than being designed big from the start. Nothing is hidden from you that doesn't absolutely have to be designed for human feet.6
Using that heuristic, I'll predict a couple more things.7 Lewis's industry contacts also include the creative director of GQ. Investors don't need weeks to make up their minds anyway.8 Or 10%? It could be an even bigger win to have core language support for server-based applications, where you have lots of running programs to look at a product made by a competitor. Let's rehearse the chain of argument so far. It would not be far from the idea that each person has a natural station in life. The problem is that a programming language.

How to make a living trading Forex - Soft Skills
First, I must make an official disclaimer that this post is not an original work of mine. This post is a distilled, paraphrased version of the useful content found in How to Make a Living Trading Foreign Exchange: A Guaranteed Income for Life by Courtney D. Smith.
It is an excellent read and should appeal to people new or foreign to the idea of Forex. The content of the book is sufficient to get you off a running head start into the world of Forex trading. It covers many key points, factors and challenges you are likely to face as a beginner. I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it, but you can judge for yourself the quality of content discussed in the book. In this post I will attempt to dissect the important key factors that are beneficial to my style of trading. Hence I will be distorting some of the principles and guides shared in the books. I’ll repeat my point again. I won’t be copying and pasting all the content from her book, as I do not intent to copy her style completely. I will only raise and paraphrase powerful, universal points that will benefit my style of trading, however, in the event that I do copy and paste an idea from her book, I will use inverted commas to indicate that it is purely her work. 1. Risk Management Risk management can be boiled down and simplified into a sentence: ‘Do not enter a position which may lose you more money than you can psychologically and economically handle.’ That’s it. It is that simple, yet, this is one of the hardest skill sets to pick up as a new trader. For a very simple reason, greed. By increasing your exposure (amount you can possible lose), you also increase the amount you can possibly win, and this hypothetical jackpot is the allure for bad risk management. Throughout the chapter, Courtney stresses that the idea of risk management in the context that we have to lose as little as possible in order for us to stay in the game to win profits. She then illustrates that point with a very wordy coin flipping analogy. “Let’s play a game. Let’s assume that you are going to flip a coin. Let’s further assume that you have $100 and you are going to flip the coin 1,000 times. This is a totally fair game. All we are going to do is to change the size of the bet. First, let’s assume that we bet $10 on every flip of the coin. That’s 10 percent of our bankroll of $100. What are the chances that we will get wiped out sometime during our 1,000 coin flips? Turns out that we have over a 90 percent chance of getting wiped out. The reason is that all we need is a net of 10 losing trades and we are wiped out. And there is over a 90 percent chance that we will get that condition sometime during those 1,000 flips. Now, let’s only bet $1 on each flip. What are the chances now that you will get wiped out in the 1,000 flips? Turns out to be less than 5 percent because now we need to get a net of 100 losing coin flips in the 1,000 flips and the chances of that are very small. One of the key factors to consider is that the return and risk are asymmetrical. How can that be when the odds are 50-50 on each coin flip? Shouldn’t I always end up with roughly $100 at the end of the game? Nope! Let’s simplify the game for purposes of demonstration. Let’s assume that you are going to bet $100 on each coin flip. Unfortunately, you lose the first flip. There. You’ve lost all your money. You don’t get to play the game anymore. Let’s start over. This time you win the first flip so you have $200 in your account. But then you lose the next two flips. You’re wiped out again and don’t get to play the game. Do you see a pattern developing? If you do well, you still have a chance of getting wiped out. But if you are wiped out, you never get another chance of doing well. That is why the game is asymmetrical. Each flip is 50-50 but getting wiped out means that you don’t get to play the game anymore. That is the situation we have with trading. You may have a good system, but getting wiped out means you don’t get to trade anymore to take advantage of that good system. But making money in the beginning helps you from getting wiped out but doesn’t completely eliminate the prospect. As a result, we need to have proper risk management to make sure that we can end up with enough of a chance to make money that the chance of getting wiped out and not getting to play the game is eliminated.” The main take away from this is as such: A trader can win big the first time, second time, maybe the third time with a sufficiently large exposure. But the winning, though it expands the trader’s capital, does not actually protect him from being wiped out. Hence, we should always practise prudent risk management. 2. Risk Management - The Fixed Fractional Courtney shared a useful risk management technique, called the fixed fractional. It utilises a mathematical concept that if you risk 1 percent of your total equity every time, you theoretically can open an infinite amount of positions. I think it is a strong technique to prevent being wiped out, or at least dragging the process out long enough to hopefully allow the trader to become a profitable one. “The core technique for risk management is called fixed fractional because we risk a fixed fraction of our portfolio on every trade. If you always risk a fixed percentage of your account, you will risk fewer dollars on each trade as you lose money. For example, let’s assume that you have $100,000 in your account and you decide to risk 1 percent on each trade. Assume that you lose the maximum on the first three trades. You will lose $1,000 on the first trade, which is 1 percent of $100,000. You now have $99,000 in your account. That means you can only risk $990 on the next trade.” 3. Psychology - Taking Profits Nearly every day trading book I read has a portion on taking profits. But I’ll just cover it anyway because it’s arguably one of the hardest things to do. Again, I can simplify it to one sentence, ‘Do not close your trades early when you have a winner, because you need to let your winners run.’ Courtney goes on to illustrate that one with a simple example: “Every method has a certain number of losses and a certain number of gains. That is the nature of every method. There can be variances around that number for short periods of time but not over the long run. Let’s go back to our example of losing $1.00 on each losing trade and making $2.50 on each winning trade and 45 percent of our trades are winners. We know through simple math that this is a winning method. But what if we took profits every time we had a $1.00 profit? That would make this a money-losing method immediately. We are losing on more trades than we are winning so making/losing equal amounts of money on each trade is a surefire way to lose money.” I utilise multiple entries to ensure I have at least one winner running. My method may not work for everyone. But if I have 2 entries, I will close one entry after my profit if that entry is at least 1x my total risk in that position. That leaves me with an entry running (with S/L set at 1x total risk) and an entry closed ensuring my net risk is zero. This style also limits me to only take trades where my R/R is minimally 2. 4. Psychology - Losing Trades “Most beginning traders are stunned when I tell them that most of my trades are losers. They think that it is impossible to make money when most of your trades are losers. They think that a master trader should win most, maybe nearly all, of their trades. In fact, I doubt if any of the top ten traders in the world win on most of their trades. Trading profits generally follow the 80/20 Principle, or the Pareto Principle. It states that 80 percent of your profits will come from 20 percent of your trades. While this may not literally be true, the theory holds. Most of your profits will come from a small minority of your trades.” That’s right folks, the ugly truth. If you are a trader, and even if you are an amazing trader, chances are, you are going to be wrong more times than you are going to be right. That’s the nature of our job. The market doesn't care what you and your $100k thinks, the market cares about what the other trillion dollars are thinking. Fact is, you are likely to lose more than you win. It’s no big deal. It happens. That’s why it’s so important to win big, and lose small. However, Courtney attempts to address the psychological damage from having multiple losers (trust me, it hurts more than you think, even if you’re making a profit).
“Naturally, there will come a time when we see several or more losing trades in a row. If you follow my directions in this book then none of these will be big losers. Each one will be trivial. But the cumulative effect of this string of paper cuts will begin to wear on your emotions. You may become frustrated or bored with the action or lack of action. You may begin to doubt the value of the method, or worse, the value of yourself as a trader. Both concepts will lead to further losses as you break your discipline. Perhaps you will stop trading altogether. The point is that a series of losing trades, even small losers, or a losing streak can break you psychologically. Chapter 9 will cover this in more detail, but it is important to bring it up here. One solution to psychological stress is to boost the number of winning trades. The potential for losing streaks decreases and the positive reinforcement that comes from having a winning streak increases. Even having the occasional small winner can create a much more positive emotional and psychological state of mind and thus enhance the profitability of the trader through greater discipline. Adding a smattering of winning trades can create a better mind-set to make money. It will give the positive feedback that will help to create the discipline to be consistent and persistent in the face of a losing streak. Why? Because the losing streak will be reduced or limited by the addition of some small winning trades.” The next part of her book goes on about how we should use multiple confirmations before we enter a position. This is likely to increase our chances of winning. I found this part to be quite.. fluffy to say the least. It’s common sense to have more confirmations of your trading signals before you enter a position to minimise the risk of being wrong. Hence, I will attempt to simplify what the next 10 pages of her book are talking about. One should not enter a trade based on just one indicator, don’t look for excuses to enter a trade just because you feel like it. Enter a trade only when the stars, moon and sun aligns, and when you statistically have the highest chance of winning (this happens when there is a confluence of confirmation signals). By having a higher chance of winning, you lose less, and this decreases the psychological pressure on yourself.
5. Psychology - Trading Plan & Learning Courtney stresses the importance of having a trading plan as well as learning from your trades. I really do not think I am able to replicate the essence of what she is trying to say without diluting the importance of it. Hence, I will just quote her word for word. “With a trading plan, all the relevant fundamental and technical indicators can be stored in one spot. It will allow you to outline a scenario of the expectations for the future. In addition, it provides a place for the exact entry and exit points to be delineated and necessary money management principles to be applied. One of the important features of the trading plan is that it is devised before the money is risked. Traders are typically far less emotional about a trade before the money is committed. Typically, traders lose their objectivity when they are on the firing line and money is committed. The trading plan also helps to educate you. After a trade, you can go over your trading plans and evaluate what actually happened. This is called the postmortem. You have an opportunity to examine how accurate the pretrade analysis was and discover areas of weakness in your own education or insights. Often, investors will realize that certain facets of their trading technique have been over- or underestimated. They think that a particular technique is doing well when, in fact, it is doing poorly. Traders can refer back to the trading plan while in the trade to determine whether things are going as planned and whether there have been significant changes that will affect the analysis that led to initiating the position.” “The use of a trading plan is also a viable way of reducing mental fatigue and anxiety. The trading plan is a record of the thoughts of the trader before the trade is initiated. It represents a calmer, detached state of mind than will exist when money is on the line. Traders who have committed money based on a rational trading plan will be able to refer back to that trading plan and use it as a touchstone of calm.”
“Remember, the main point of a trading plan is to help increase discipline. A written plan is far superior to a mental plan. It is extremely difficult for the human mind to take into account all possible factors in a rational manner when they are not written down. A mental trading plan tends to become a plan composed of wishful thinking rather than hard critical analysis. Furthermore, the written plan provides the opportunity for traders to conduct a postmortem analysis on the trade (we will discuss this later in detail). It is probably easier for traders to acquire the discipline to fill out the trading plan than it is to acquire the psychological discipline necessary to function without a trading plan. You should fill out a trading plan whenever you have an idea that you are thinking of trading. You may see a chart pattern or read an article in the paper and think that there is something worthwhile to follow upon. You may become bullish on a particular forex pair because of a particular analysis you have done. You should then fill out the trading plan before entering the position because it will enforce your self-discipline. A trading plan can be in any form. It can be a form that is filled out or a narrative.” 6. Wrapping it all up
The next part of her book is mostly trading psychology from her own perspective. But it’s not as useful as what has been mentioned here. Without the above mentioned, you will fail as a trader. However, I’d like to add that almost every part of her book is invaluable. You SHOULD read it, and one of the reasons why I’m starting a book review is because many people often ask me where do I get my resources, and my answer is the same - Books, and the internet. The next question is, ‘What books?’ Hence, through my blog I will attempt to compile my list of favorite books and the points in them that truly changed and continue to shape me.

Week Eight.
It’s been a busy week! When you realize you’ve got 7 weeks to go - somehow stress, adrenaline & excitement all kick-in at once and you suddenly find yourself in the library early every morning of the week. That’s what this week has been like for me, anyway.
After sketching on Caitlin’s Ipad over the weekend, I thought to take out a Microsoft Surface Pro from the studio to continue my sketch experimentation through SketchBook Pro. I don’t know why I haven’t taken one out earlier - they’re amazing! It’s been stimulating working with a different tool. During the first few days of the week, I continued to develop my initial spatial diagram, going into more detail for each ‘section’ (How many people will be using the space at once? Exactly what activities will be going on in the space? & general thoughts e.g. comfort, emotion, play). A main aspect for me, which was highlighted in the book: Spatial Strategies for Interior Design, was the fact that I needed a principle design element to run throughout my design.
I took inspiration from the ‘teeth’ precedent below, to guide my design. The designers used the analogy of a two-dimensional diagram of a set of teeth to divide the space into a centralized circulation route between an 'upper' and 'lower set' set of various treatment rooms. Although this is possibly a strange example, I feel it demonstrates one way of approaching a design from the 'inside-out'. The narrative successfully reflects that of a dental surgery because it has derived from a very literal element within this field of work, which is something I would like to interpret in the way of 'nutrition' for my own project.

I mentioned this in my post last week, but have decided that, in order to emphasize nutrition in the design (and not only the placing of fruit and vegetables as a secondary element once the design has been resolved), I will be taking inspiration from the Moringa Oleifera plant to help me finalize a spatial strategy. This seems to be connect quite well with what I have explored up until this now; I have a spatial diagram that is based around a central point (a radial & clustered concept) which relates perfectly to the Moringa seed for example (exploration of this shown in the above images). The seed has a central/core element with surrounding parts. I like the symbolic analogy of the ‘growing’ of this seed (that is naturally a nutritionally rich plant) as the starting point of a spatial design that will be used for a nutrition-focused clinic. I need to extensively explore this idea, possibly using other elements of the plant such as the leaves and the flowers.
When I discussed my development at this weeks group tutorial, these were some thoughts I received:
Do you know how big you want to space to be? Look into each space specifically for each function to determine the exact sizes.
Confusion about target audience - you know there will be approximately 40 women excluding children using the facility at once - stick to your original target audience otherwise you will unravel your entire concept.
Presentation room - if you think other people (e.g. husbands & fathers) would be interested in coming to a session like this, maybe make this space slightly bigger to accommodate for ‘extras’.
Why not use the space around the building? e.g. ‘waiting’/’overflow’ space if needed.
“Be the change you want to see in the world”
“Can you imagine what the world would look like if we placed humanity at the centre of everything we do?”
“Creativity can make a difference to people’s lives”
“Creative thinking and innovation can make a positive change in the world”
An inspiring talk by the founder of Creative Conscience, Crissy Levett (above image taken from their Twitter page). She spoke about what they do as a non-profit organization, made up of two parts: Awards and Impact sections, and talked through many examples of how creative design, ranging from advertising to fashion, has made a difference is people’s lives around the world.
It was also very interesting to hear past/present students talk about work they had previously entered into the Creative Conscience Awards competitions. Something that was highlighted: it’s not about the end result, but rather the strong concept behind the design that is most successful.
A successful Design Team meeting on Tuesday! We limited our meeting time this week which pushed us to make decisions more quickly. We decided on final layout and display methods, trying to incorporate everyone’s requirements e.g. A1 sheets, A3 book, models etc. AND we got to test out our ideas because the Build Team did an amazing job with making a prototype of our design. Below are sketches I did for the meeting & photos of the Build Team and their creation. Great work girls!
Dissertation results came out this week too, and sadly I did not do as well as I had hoped. I am disappointed to say the least. When so much time and effort is put into something and when the results don’t match up to it, it’s a tough one to deal with. Although it’s difficult to stay positive, what else can I do hey? I’ve got such little time left at University, I might as well make the most of it. Time to put it behind me, pick up the pieces and press on!
I’ve spent a few hours over the week adjusting my website as I am not certain that it is quite ‘finished’ yet. I have been exploring different ways of displaying the ‘my work’ section & where the description of each project should be. As I want it to be as user-friendly as possible, I took screenshots of my development and asked friends to give me feedback on which layout/composition they felt worked best. This was helpful because many of them gave suggestions on changing elements of the layout that I hadn’t thought of. Long live user-orientated design! Above are some screenshots of my development:
Summer Show update: The Design Team had meeting/discussion to look at the way our work could be arranged on the 1:1 model. We have decided on a few things:
A choice of A1 landscape or portrait size space for visuals, screens, etc.
The boards/panels will all be 2.4m high to avoid material waste and building difficulty
The boards will be flexible for those who want an A1 sheet, book AND model/hanging pieces (some frames will be ‘open’ to accommodate for this)
The dimensions of spaces where (A1 sheet, A3 book & model) will fit (thanks Caitlin for drawing it up!)
FMP Development - continuing on from the first post about using a ‘symbolic analogy’ (where I used the cross-section of a Moringa Seed), I have now been exploring with the leaf of the Moringa Oleifera plant to see whether this might inform the spatial design in a more interesting way.
Thoughts and analysis:
Central ‘water point’ remains central - this has been the essential feature throughout my development so far. I think it is most important for water to be easily accessible at all times for everyone, & by placing it in the centre of the spatial design makes this possible (communal, workshop, waiting & consultation spaces are within close range). The ‘clustered’ spaces form around this feature create something similar to a courtyard space and emphasises the inside-outside approach I have been struggling to achieve until this point. I also think this arrangement highlights the importance & value of water.
Spaces branch off from central core as in initial spatial diagram - I wanted to use the leaf shape to influence the spatial design/flow. It makes sense to use the ‘stem’ of the leaf as the main circulation route through the space and have the various spaces (communal, workshop, waiting & consultation) branch off from this, just like the individual leaves do from the ‘stem’. There is a clear link between the initial spatial diagram which expands outwards in a clustered format from a central point, & the overlapping Moringa leaf motif whose leaves branch out from the central core of the stem but in a more linear manner.
‘In’ one side - ‘out’ the other - I like how the structure of the leaf has a clear beginning and clear end. I thought to explore this idea to create a clear central route through the space that has a clear ‘entrance’ on the one side and a clear ‘exit’ on the other. I feel that this ‘route’ through the space flows well, making accessibility to each of the spaces straightforward. The ‘cluster’ concept remains in the organisation & layout of the spaces but a central linear pathway ‘cuts through’ it. I like how this plays on the ‘inside-outside’ approach too, in a different way.
I am going to carry on with this kind of exploration as I feel I am close to coming up with an interesting spatial design which I can then use to explore in 3D and start exploring the work stages in more detail.
Top Image: Review of our Installation. Bottom Image: Review of Group 5′s Installation.
On Friday I took part in an ‘Urban Interventions’ Workshop in collaboration with Level 5 Graphic Design students - what a great day it was! Full-on from start to finish. I found the whole concept of ‘intervening’ in spaces (that are otherwise very dull/barren) very interesting and it was great to be able to generate ideas, thoughts and drawings together with people from a different course.
As you can see from the above image (top), our group got given the site just next to the students union office. After visiting the site and after much discussion we eventually decided to take the ‘moment of humour’ route and make a (large) pair of eyes on the bland grey walls. Our intention was to have the design ‘look at’ & ‘surprise’ students walking into uni from this entrance. We hoped it would create giggles, discussions & smiles from the passers-by. In our initial design proposal we wanted to take up the entirety of each wall with an eye! But we soon realised that with the time and the materials we had to use, it was’t possible, so we scaled it down dramatically. We had also thought to use the road and car park opposite this space to create a mouth/lips but we ran out of time. The coloured parts of the iris are meant to represent the diversity of students at AUB. Overall, our ‘vision’ was to make the building come to life, which I think we achieved. A bit of fun!
Here is a more detailed description of what the Workshop entailed, taken from the e-mail invitation we received:
Workshop: Urban Interventions Facilitator: Marten Sims Guest: Dr Helen Bolderston CPsychol, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at BU Date: Friday 3rd March Where: L5 graphic design studio on first floor in South House Time: 10am-4.30pm
Rationale Streets, roads, alleys, sidewalks, car parks and parking spaces account for about 33% of the land use in the urban environment (cities and towns). This land is used to transport goods and services, people and livestock, young and old. Yet, it is rarely personalised by the communities living, working and studying around it – as many people consider ‘public space’ to be managed by city authorities, town planners, developers and transit authorities – and not a place that they can personalise or change to suit their needs (like their own private gardens, apartments or houses). One way that artists, community activists and designers have taken to modifying the urban environment is to create and install ‘urban interventions’ by using the existing infrastructure to place humorous, thoughtful and often provoking interactions into public spaces in order to turn often mundane environments into places with personality and character.
Assignment You have 1 hour to walk around the public spaces of the AUB and BU university campus and look for opportunities to create some form of temporary urban intervention. Look for existing signage, objects and building features that could be livened-up. You have 4 hours to create a temporary intervention using any tool, medium or substrate at your disposal. Do not damage the current infrastructure! Items must be easily removed, wiped down or peeled off.
Deliverables By 3.30pm, have your interventions installed. As a group, we will walk from one site to the other to review the installations.
Below are images we took throughout the day, showing our development. As you can see, we had a lot of fun - I only wish we took a video of what the process of installing it looked like! Hilarious.
The weekend has been dedicated to Blogging & Design Report writing-up. It’s not ideal to be ‘playing catch-up’ but hopping from cafe to cafe with a friend makes this process a less tedious one! Looking forward to the busy week ahead.

Remember, most of the companies started in the garage or basement, everyone started from zero.

ask yourself or better write it down, what are the most things you require to start a business after writing thoroughly notice everything and see like seriously you need it or not or you can use alternative cheap things to start your business
