"Issue #26: My Heart Is Too Heavy to Sleep"

Twenty-six issues in and the boys finally get to kiss-kiss-fall-in-love! Aw, I'm so proud of them. I struggled a bit with finding terms for dating in Warriors, since the series never has an in-between stage of friends to mates. "Together" works fine enough for me.

The idea of Pinewing and Cormorantleaf as their warrior names is one I've had for a long time, and admittedly the dumb joke about Pinepaw not knowing what pine trees are is just as old. Hey, he grew up in a wasteland! Not his fault.

It was also fun to draw Cormorantpaw's family again, I love their designs. A little more light is shed on his sordid past, but it's hard for him to talk about. It's still very fresh.

This issue is the longest one yet, so it took me awhile to make, but I like it a lot. I hope you do too.

I hc that Kendall has been doing different types of fighting training since she was young.

Thoughts?

I'd like to think that G-Ma Betty (aka the MVP) allowed her to do fighting training on the side when she was younger. Going along with my strict Christian parents headcanon, Betty was definitely against how oppressive they were (especially with their beliefs) and saw how much potential Kendall had (both intellectually and as a fighter) and wanted to nurture it. I think since Betty is older and likely grew up in a time where women weren't really allowed to have choices or opportunities or self-expression like in the current time, she wants to make sure Kendall gets that chance.

Luckily, Betty has a close neighbor who actually does do fighting training for a living, and after understanding Kendall's situation, they offer to train her for free. Under the pretense of hanging out or Bible study, Kendall is often sent to Betty's house on weekends and summers, and she becomes adept at many different fighting styles. Also, unlike her parents, who taught her to constantly be quieter and trivialize her own feelings so she doesn't "cause a scene", they actually taught her the healthier alternative of staying still and thinking things through, always being cautious, calm and clearheaded while still encouraging her to express herself as well as her aptitude towards physical and intellectual pursuits.

Ok, I'm gonna make y'all sad for a second, but I was listening to a song, and I ended up imagining this conversation between Halt and Crowley when they were... I'm gonna say 26-ish?

(Crowley stands slightly in front of the door to Halts cabin, Halt is leaning against a table, almost casually, but both are clearly upset)

Crowley: (concerned, confrontational) Halt, you need to stop this!

Crowley: (slightly lower voice, more compassionate tone) Listen, I know you. I know what you've been through. I know you almost died that day.

(Halt breaks eye contact and looks off to the side)

Crowley: (voice rises, a tad more exasperated in tone) But you can't go around doing every single dangerous thing you can think of! (Waves his hand behind him, gesturing vaguely to the world) It's almost as if you're yelling to the universe, "Hey, you f*cked up, I'm not supposed to be here!"

Halt: (quietly) I'm not.

(Crowley drops his shoulders, slowly letting his hand to his side. He sighs, goes over, and hugs Halt)

Crowley: Look, when you first opened up to me about how you lost everything, I promised you that I would make sure you never lost anything ever again

Crowley: That includes your life.

(Halt starts silently sobbing into Crowleys shoulder. The view pans out to see an incredibly messy and clearly neglected living room, with dulled weapons strewn across the counters/tables and dirty clothes everywhere on the floor)

[For context, we were sent to mine some magical metal for a group of dragon worshippers who blamed us for the death of one of their own, however we were planning on using said metal to forge a weapon to kill the dragon they were worshiping and only got enough to make one weapon. Upon finishing the riffle we planned on giving to our gunslinger, the leader of said worshippers appeared with a bunch of warriors and demanded we hand over the gun]

DM: Gaslight?

Wizard: Don't you mean deception?

Bard: No, I'm gaslighting him

(Rolls a 26 in deception)

Bard: Oh, this gun? No, it's not made of the metal you asked us to give you.

(Procedes to talk for 5 minutes without giving another lie, and convinces the leader there would be a feast for their warriors prepared the next day and the metal they demaded would be given to them)

Wizard: You- how did??

Ranger: HOW did you not lie once during that???

DM: That encounter was supposed to take up the rest of the session!
