"The Vaster World"

Well! This is it! The very last epilogue of "Pinepaw and the Forgotten World"!

This epilogue in particular took me awhile to write, because I had to get it exactly how I wanted. Pinewing and Cormorantleaf's relationship is one of the main focuses of the story, and I really felt I needed to explore it the way it deserved. Especially important to me was showing that despite how much they love each other, there's still a ton of baggage and difficulities they needed to work out. I honestly think it would be unrealistic for two characters with so much trauma to just skip off happily together, but I also wanted to emphasize how they could still reconcile in the end. Not all relationships work out, but Pinewing and Cormorantleaf both felt that the other was extremely important to them, and the relationship was something they both wanted. So they were willing to put in the work of building it back up.

I had a ton of fun drawing older Pinewing and Cormorantleaf. I started doodling Pinewing with full facial hair something like a year ago, and I've been so desperate to finally get it into the comic since. It feels so right for him, like his perfect final form. After a life full of pressure and difficulty Pinewing just wants to be a happy old man who gets to kiss his husband every day, and sometimes profesy the future writ flesh. Goodbye, my little blue cat; I'm gonna miss you.

The title of this epilogue comes from "Mimsy Were The Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett: "They would survive, but they would not know how to swim downstream, to the vaster world of the ocean.”

In the end, the whole project wraps up at 64,501 words, 370 pages, and two and a half years of production time. I started this project expecting it to be a minor thing I occasionally drew on the side, something a few people might find interesting. The enormously positive response has absolutely blown me away and continues to do so, and I am forever so grateful that thousands of people can enjoy and meaningfully relate to this story.

Thank you, as always, to everyone who has commented, shared, reblogged, theorized, made fanart, made fanfiction, told their friends, liked it, or just read it at all. Though I won't go into the specific details, PATFW is an extremely personal and cathartic creation of mine, so the fact that many of you have also told me that it connected with you on an emotional level is genuinely heart-touching. I appreciate all your readership through these years. It means a lot.

"Farewell, and I Love You"

Here were are; the last proper issue of Pinepaw and the Forgotten World. As I've said before, I have a series of ten epilogues planned which will wrap up all of the main characters' lives, so the comic is not quite done yet. Hence I'll save all the rambly, sappy stuff for that final epilogue.

The epilogues will begin posting on January 7th, and will post twice-weekly on Tuesday and Friday until they're finished. The first three are already available on my Patreon if you're interested.

For now, I just want to say - thank you so much to everyone who has read and shared my comic. It's meant a lot to me. I hope you all liked it.

"Binary Star"

Oh Slugpelt, oh Slugpelt... probably my favorite character from the whole comic. I worked really hard on her epilogue to make sure it had everything I wanted to include, because I had a lot of thoughts on Slugpelt and her rocky road towards recovery and the places she's suffered or regressed along the way.

A lot of her story has revolved around grief and depression, and the fear that comes from being raised under abuse and how you deal with that as an adult. Slugpelt's tendency has always been to isolate herself, inside of a protective shell of prickliness and avoidance. It's very tempting, and would be deeply understandable, for her to retreat into again after the events of the comic. After a long time, that misery feels natural and familiar, and very scary when you consider trying to leave the thing that's helped you survive. And although it can be cathartic to really dig yourself into those emotions, at some point I think many people just - want to feel good again. That can be a difficult decision to face, but Slugpelt has people around her who are able to give her concrete goals to work towards, and support her when she falters.

Daffodilcloud's kittens are named Goldie (gold spotted), Jenny (black and gray), and Nellie (brown tabby). All three are female.

The title comes from Tom Godwin's story "The Cold Equations": The law of gravitation was a rigid equation and it made no distinction between the fall of a leaf and the ponderous circling of a binary star system.”

soo, have you guys read Razmerry's Pinepaw and the forgotten world?

i was randomly struck with inspiration and motivation to work on this, and i'm glad fot it! i honestly just picture this song as Slugpelt and Cashew, buuuut the lines "here comes the rain again, raining on my head like a tragedy, tearing me apart like a new emotion" was just to perfect for the slug rain confrontation in the newest issue. as a result, Rainhaze kinda took over the middle chunk of the pmv lmao

this was my first proper attempt at doing a pmv with tweening, so hopefully it doesn't look too wonky. it was pretty fun actually! i'm definitely proud of some of the shots :]

anyway, shout out to Slugpelt. tragic moms gotta be one of my favorite types of characters (Graypool, Dawnpelt, and Ivypool being some of my fav wc characters lol)

Eye of the Storm

Prologue

A dark cat raced across the forest floor, paws pounding against the moist earth. Stopping to sniff the air, the cat’s nose convulsed in disgust. A rotten smell engulfed its nostrils.

The dark grey feline, Rookpaw, begrudgingly followed the scent. He had been searching for his best friend, Daffodilpaw, who had gone missing a few days prior after leaving on a solo hunting mission. The smell was getting more pungent now, and Rookpaw could barely breathe. Pushing past a thick clump of bracken, Rookpaw froze. Laying in the dank clearing, below a canopy, was a horrific sight.

Atop a puddle of crimson blood laid Daffodilpaw’s body, with a large gash on her throat encrusted with dried ichor. the cream-furred apprentice’s underbelly was stained red with the scarlet fluid that had been oozing from the deep wound, for seeming a long time.

Staring at the corpse for what felt like moons, Rookpaw slowly backed away. Suddenly, he heard a twig snap behind him. Whipping his head around, he just barely saw a flash of pale grey fur flying at him. He felt a sharp pang of pain in his neck.

Then it all went black.

Typing BarrenClan Cats in OPS

i'm rereading @barrenclan so I thot this might be fun :P

Right now, I'm only on chapter 15/16 I think? But I think I have enough info (plus prior knowledge) to do a quick typing on the slug sibs

Pinepaw: Pinepaw is definitely a gatherer, though I don't know if I'd say he's overdoing chaos...he doesn't have a need for new things as much as he has a need for individuality.

This might not SEEM like the case since he's not an individualist per say, but when reading the comic you can tell he goes away from the tribe and focuses on his wants, he is looking for answers not FOR the tribe but purely because he wants to know.

This can be seen in many scenarios, but mainly in him wanting to leave the group. Someone who's tribe over self and an organizer would prefer to stick to traditions, like Cootstorm, they would hear the cries of the past barrenclan warriors and want to stay, because that is what the tribe and tradition wants.

This leads me to either INTP or INFP, though I think he's more of an INFP. He doesn't care as much about efficiency, even if he is logical he prefers to think about his values

Also idk if it's necessary to say ne>se he's clearly intuitive, moreso coming to as many conclusions as possible instead of paying close attention to the surroundings

ALSO Consume>Sleep>Blast>Play is my best guess but I'm not too sure

Now the hard part is figuring out whether she uses ne or se, though I'm gonna go with ne...she's always thinking of possibilities to make the clan a better place, so her ne assists her fe

Fe is definitely her main function, the entire story she's battling with herself over gaining approval with her mentor, meaning she neglects a cay like Pinepaw who is more individualistic and doesn't really want to partake in tribe beliefs. She definitely gets healthier as the story goes on, but she's a good example of a tribe savior being selfish.

As for whether she uses si or ni....I'm gonna go with ni, she isn't tied to si but there also isn't much showing her ni so I skipped over to the third function and (imo) she's def se>ne so. Ni it is!

TERRITORY AND CULTURE Territory

GardenClan lives on the grounds of an abandoned Twoleg building with sprawling grounds. They live in the crumbling building - half of the roof is intact, and the walls are still fairly sturdy. The camp has a distinct medicine den, but beyond that cats typically build their own dens, sleeping with friends and family. The territory is surrounding the camp is full of flowers and herbs, with cats often having their own gardens. Beyond this is some hills, with sparse bushes and trees. There are Clans surrounding their territory.

Culture Rootstar was born at the tail end of time of intense war. He is the first leader during peacetime is recent memory; however, he is getting old, and many of the cats he grew up with have passed on. GardenClan has a tradition of keeping and passing along their history, and older cats often tell younger ones about the battles that GardenClan has fought. While older cats often heard these stories as warnings of the horrors of war, younger cats are hearing them as stories of the glory of war. The peacetime has also granted the GardenClan cats more of an opportunity to expand their culture beyond battle - the storytelling tradition has evolves to include stories made up by cats, as well as a variety of storytelling games. Additionally, once the camp did not need to be fortified against attack, cats began to collect trinkets, and decorating their dens. They also began cultivating the flowers and bushes the Twolegs had left behind when they abandoned the area; gardening and elaborate den-building became popular hobbies. GardenClan cats treasure beautiful objects and places for this reason, and are proud of the culture they have worked together to create!

Rootstar (Prev. Rootheart) (King Randolph) - An old golden tom with a graying muzzle. He prefers to solve problems with his head, not his claws.

Cuckooflight (Duchess Rowena) - A pretty silver tabby. A good leader and very ambitious. (Apprentice: Silverpaw)

Medicine Cat

Yewshade (Fabian the Apothecary) - A dark brown tabby tom with green eyes. Seems to dislike his job, and often comes up with reasons not to do things.

Daffodilpaw (Janessa) - A white she-cat with yellow tabby patches and bright blue eyes. She is fascinated by bugs and enjoys watching them. She’s also a bit bossy.

Warriors

Strikeclaw (Desmond) - Large, gray tom. He is not very smart, but makes up for it by being one of the strongest cats in the Clan.

Violetbloom (Ashlyn) - A brown she-cat with a purple tint to her fur, and dark purple eyes. She is practical and wise. She enjoys learning and teaching the Clan’s history. (Apprentice: Lilypaw)

Redblossom (Blair) - A bright ginger she-cat with black patches and red-tinted amber eyes. She is somewhat temperamental, and is very outspoken. She is one of the Clan’s best hunters. (Apprentice: Daisypaw)

Blueflower (Courtney) - A dark blue she-cat with clear blue eyes. She is intelligent but shy, and enjoys listening to stories. She excels at keeping the Clan’s stories and histories consistent between storytellers.

Sunflowerfoot (Delia) - A bright yellow she-cat with green eyes. She is cheerful and optimistic. She enjoys going on border patrols, especially with Honeysucklefur.

Honeysucklefur (Edeline) A soft yellow she-cat with yellow-orange eyes. She is easily excited and very disorganized. She enjoys going on border patrols, especially with Sunflowerfoot.

Camelliamuzzle (Fallon) - A pale pink she-cat with pale gray eyes. She’s a romantic, and is very sweet. She loves making up stories to tell others, often involving True Love saving the day.

Stonetumble (Derek) - A gray and brown tom. Reliable and laid-back, although surprisingly stubborn when he wants to be. (Apprentice: Birdpaw)

Rosesong (Genevieve) - A white she-cat with dark pink markings. She is smart and kind, although she is often late. She enjoys gardening, and is often sought out for gardening advice. (Apprentice: Tigerpaw)

Pouncepetal (Hadley) - A honey-colored she-cat with amber eyes. She is daring, and enjoys climbing and coming up with dangerous challenges for herself and Leaplily to complete.

Leaplily (Isla) - A cream she-cat with green eyes. She is very competitive, and enjoys rising to Pouncepetal’s challenges.

Apprentices

Silverpaw (Brutus the Monkey)- A silver tom. He can talk himself out of any trouble he gets into, and he often gets into trouble.

Birdpaw (Felix the Parrot) - A brightly-colored tom. He is very chatty, and has a big mouth. He enjoys coloring his fur with dyes made from berries and flowers.

Tigerpaw (Twyla the Cat)- Ginger she-cat with dark tabby stripes. She is helpful and eager to please.

Daisypaw (Kathleen) - A white she-cat with yellow flecks and pale pink eyes. She’s very down-to-earth, although a bit disorganized. She enjoys building elaborate dens.

Lilypaw (Lacey) - A pure white she-cat with pale purple eyes. A bit clumsy and unsure of herself, but naturally talented and skilled once she gets over her insecurities. She enjoys collecting trinkets and pretty flowers.

Misc

Sweetsong (Queen Isabella) (Deceased) - A pure white she-cat with pale blue eyes. She was highly respected and adored. She enjoyed singing, often finding ways to turn stories into songs.

PLOT

Sweetsong, mother of the Bouquet (affectionate name for all of these flower-themed babies) and deputy of the Clan, rapidly became sick and died. Her former apprentice, Cuckooflight, became the new deputy.

She is a good leader, although not particularly charismatic. Although, she has a strange fascination with the war stories…

Soon after Cuckooflight is appointed, Rootstar begins to grow sick. She steps in to run the Clan while the medicine cat, Yewshade, watches over him. She begins increasing the amount and size of border patrols. She also begins to encourage more battle training, often coming up with elaborate Clan-wide exercises.

After Rootstar loses his 8th life, she takes full control of the Clan, as he is too weak to even speak against her. She begins rewarding the most aggressive and battle-hungry cats and punishing the peaceful ones; she often calls for the stronger warriors to eat before the elders, queens, and kits. When anyone argues, she ensures they receive the worst tasks to complete, or will give them a task that is either purposefully dangerous or amounts to an exhausting wild goose chase.

The Bouquet, aware of how their Clan is becoming battle-hungry (and some of them regular hungry!) as well as losing their culture, begin meeting nightly in a secret garden their parents grew on a stable section of the building’s roof. They often sit and tell stories, and invite trusted Clan members to garden in the area.

The Bouquet eventually learns that Cuckooflight is working with Yewshade to poison Rootstar. Aware that much of the Clan wouldn’t believe them, they come up with an elaborate plan that plays to each of their strengths to eventually defeat her and her loyal supporters. It culminates in a fight in the secret garden, where Cuckooflight leaps to attack Rose (Genevieve), who manages to dodge, which results in Cuckooflight leaping off the roof.

Rose (Genevieve) becomes the new deputy and their father is saved!
