I'm seeing a lot of "ugh, so we can't even criticize fic authors anymore?" posts popping up on here and the ao3 subreddit and I just want to say, for the record: No one's saying you can't criticize (fanfic) authors publicly. They're saying it's rude and antithetical to positive fandom experience. And, yes there's a difference.

If this website was a conference and I had just spent a whole afternoon listening to a presentation on [unpopular fic trope] and after that was done, I got up on stage and very publicly told the audience that [unpopular fic trope] was illogical and anyone who writes it is woefully misinformed and should be banned from writing [relevant character], that would in fact be a dick move.

"But the canon character would never--" it doesn't matter. You're shouting down the hall at the person who just happily did a whole seminar on their OOC version of that character. "But I don't like that the author chose to make them--" good, you're well-acquainted with your likes and dislikes, time to find another fic.

We all run into fics and interpretations we don't like. But there's a huge difference between loudly talking about it on Tumblr where the author can see it, and just venting in a private discord or other group. Also, gentle reminder that this is a hobby for most writers and something they do purely because they enjoy it. Stop being massive dicks just because you feel entitled to a certain flavor of fanfiction you will probably be chasing until the Reformation of Krypton.

Honestly, we should throw out the term "strong female character," it doesn't mean anything anymore and I see it applied to female characters with zero personality who punch things. I don't care if a female character can punch things or if she's the weakest person in the story, does she have a personality? a compelling backstory? female friendships (instead of just rivals)? goals and hobbies that have nothing to do with the male lead? silly little quirks all her own? does she feel like a human, who was born and has loved and cried and lost but has found it in herself to make it to the end? is her strength in her integrity or her heart or in her limbs? can I understand her motivations? can I see the world through her eyes and know her heart?

Don't give me strong female characters, give me human female characters.

As a major fan of HTTYD, I have never seen a more unnecessary movie than this live action remake.

I was hoping, PRAYING that the remake would at least be an attempt to reflect the actual books back when it was first announced. Nope. Let's just spend millions of dollars to make the exact same movie. Again.

My issue with the Homicipher fandom

I actually have quite a few, but generally they seem mostly harmless so I of course wont harp on anyone for those issues aside from one. The infantilization of literally everyone esp mr.crawling. I know its because of the fact they speak in broken english (or whatever language you speak) which is associated with naivety but thing is they dont speak broken english, thats just from our MC's lack of understanding. For all we know mr.crawling has a literary philosopher level of understanding and use of his own language. I've already seen people treating him like how Deku was in 2020 with the whole innocent boi cinnamon roll thing. Its super weird to be characterizing this monster who is who knows how old as childish or even like a dog or pet and than to sexualize them in their next post or even the same one. Orrr even just looking at him in a romance way thats entirely devoid of freaky intentions. Everyone else aside from mr.chopped doesn't seem too effected by this but I just think its extremely weird and makes me feel so icky. Oh and also the argument some are making about how the fans are too freaky is insane to make when the game is what it is, but I digress.

My long, nuanced answer to this poll about shipping:

I like to think about different possibilities of a ship regardless on if it’s canon or not canon, and the majority of my ships are not canon. Which I’m okay with because corpos sometimes tend to mess up canon couples anyway ESPECIALLY most LGBT+ couples, so that is why I am 100% content with say, Destiel not being canon. Don’t worry, I’m not using that Destiel meme that has been used very distastefully nor am I swearing with my whole chest until I run out of oxygen that Dean is bisexual in canon. You can take a breather. Specified ships aside, I like romance, and I love it even better when it’s well written and the couple has the best chemistry.

When it comes to others that love toxic ships, that is a whole different discussion for those particular shippers to have, and I prefer ships that have a lot of chemistry or potential chemistry over toxic ships, so I’m not the right person to discuss the nuances of toxic ships. So the toxic ship lovers can throw their opinions onto this reblog if they want.

I’ve also had ships where they were off-screen, and I was like, “but what if they actually did interact?” I always think about the personality traits that would make the characters compatible with each other. This is NOT a romantic ship, this is purely a familial relationship possibility that I have not seen anyone do yet: Jason Todd and Terry McGinnis. Think about it, people. Jason has a few similar traits to Terry and Jason would definitely find himself relating to Terry more than some of the other Batfamily members. Plus, it would be refreshing to see those two interact and have Jason not be constantly fighting with the Batfamily, specifically Bruce Wayne. I get that his opinions and views are very different from everyone else in the Batfamily, but it gets old fast. Like an old and hardened Jason Todd will probably incorporate some cool non-lethal wrist guns on Terry’s suit after testing it out and even sparring with Terry while (playfully) teasing him because that’s what older siblings do: annoy and taunt their younger siblings. With love. Seriously though, I think Jason and Terry would have the best brotherly relationship out of the Batfam. Or maybe I’m just alone in that teeny tiny minority lol. Call it a rare BROTP.

Fanon in shipping is a mixed bag, because on one hand, I go, “yeah, I can definitely see this happening with Character A,” but on the other, there is like OP said, mischaracterization. I like most ships even if it involves a character who is canonically spoken for or has explicitly shown attraction to only the opposite gender with another character with ZERO cheating, because I don’t need ships to follow canon. And when cheating gets involved I’m thinking, “yeah no, given the loyalty this character gave in canon, this is out of their character, so skipping!” That is where fanon comes into play. But if I dislike the fanon, then I create my own.

Shipping has no rules, except just respect other people’s boundaries, so I’m not gonna tell people “ew gross, why you following canon,” or “Blegh, why do you like this fanon, it’s so blah blah blah!” My opinions on canon vs fandom are nuanced. Canon can sometimes give us some cute pairings (like Kiara and Kovu from Lion King 2, my GOATED OTP) but canon also gives us icky ones or messes up a fairly nice couple (like Gambit and Rogue from the latest X-Men cartoon from what I heard and saw clips of). There are also non-canon ships that have made me scratch my head, made me feel indifferent, or I’m just like “I don’t get why anyone would ship this, but whatever.” And again, shipping has no rules, except just respect the boundaries of other people. Canon or not, have some fun with your ships. Let’s not start wars over ships and making non-shippers think that ALL of us act that way.

Hey, I wanna talk about how we do fandom! I've come to realize that I, personally, tend to differ from many others in that I highly prefer to only engage with a text as it's written, so I don't tend to really like fanon/extremely ooc characterizations and I find it hard to get invested in ships that aren't canon. My way of doing fandom isn't better or worse than anyone else's, but I am curious about how much of a minority I'm in! So:

*We've all seen ships of characters not from the same media and stuff like shipping the concept of ennui with the color blue, okay, I'm asking what you, personally, find compelling!

and they still think live action httyd will be a cinematic improvement on the original... They can't even do basic cinema right.

why am i supposed to look at his wings? at his ribs? the rock in the background or the ferns?

then compare that to the original...

there's a focus ABOVE hiccup, who just had a fish dropped onto his lap and is shying away the other two focus points are both entirely on key points on toothless, which are his polite ass sitting position and his general head area. then there's the empty space which allows you to not only breathe a little in this scene, but also fully take in the absurdity of a DRAGON not only sparing a boy's life in the middle of a valley, but also feeding him. there's literally no one around to help him.

and that's not even mentioning how the original had a stronger and more visually compelling contrast between the dark foreground and the light stones of the background, creating a clear and readable scene. why did they try to make the foreground LIGHTER in the live action remake when they knew they couldn't make a clear contrast with a dark dragon on a dark background...

OHHH BOY I just remembered all of those super misleading articles written about Paul saying like "HE'S METHOD ACTING SO HARD HE'S TERRIFIED" as if he was trying to emulate Heath Ledger's Joker. Turns out, not only was one of the reasons that he was Too Warm because of his costume and was scared he might be having a heatstroke ghjsdg BUT THE MORE WE'VE LEARNED ABOUT HOW HE PORTRAYS EDWARD is that he wasn't meaning that in the sense of "this character is so edgy and evil and terrifying", but that EDWARD IS AN EMOTIONALLY TAXING ROLE TO PLAY FOR HIM. He speaks on this when he talks about Prisoners too, some characters are so intense emotionally because of the trauma they've been through that it's *upsetting* to be in their headspace for too long. And being in Edward's is a VERY VERY upsetting headspace, it's no wonder he was having nightmares and scared out of his mind. That's how Edward feels daily.

I adore my job, and I'm good at what I do. If money wasn't an issue? If I could be paid a living wage regardless of what work I do? Or if I do any at all? I would never leave.

But that's not the case. My wage is limited by sector policies beyond the company's control, and my company pays well by comparison to others. And I don't make enough. Every month i have to consider leaving the job I love for something with more hours - even if I know the work would kill me.

I'm lucky I haven't had to yet.

Narcissus may have been vain and a consummate heartbreaker, but Nemesis had no right to do what she did. Trapping him in a prison of his own mind, forcing him to feel so over confident and in love with himself that he never notices the world around him. I imagine it's both more comforting and more painful, blocking out all sensation until you starve to death. In love with a mirror image, unware it's unable to love you back. I think what Nemesis did to him counts as torture. And I would hope people would back me up on that.

Also, don't even get me started on Echo. Hera apparently did that one, but seeing as Echo was cursed, I think this falls under Nemesis's jurisdiction too. Echo was cursed to never be able to talk unless she repeats the words of other people. She's the only one who genuinely cares for Narcissus, and yet she's so unremarkable that nobody notices her. These two deserve better. They were tortured in cruel and unusual ways. And I want to see them finally get their happy endings.

You know what I hate as a creator? That you can't give a character before the arc without seeing hatred for that character, and often even after passing the arc he will be hated…

Seriously, I saw someone attacking Lumity and calling her "Toxic" because Amity was so bad… Because she rejected everyone… Yes, she literally hates a character who was a victim of abuse from her mother and had to develop a fucking defense mechanism… But you know, if you are a child and you can't cope with the trauma, it's better to kill yourself, because your change for the better means nothing

This is how I feel when I see the fandom and how it treats multi-dimensional characters…
