Casual reminder that Jim Bob knew the molestations were happening as early as 2002, and waited a year to do anything about it (aside from "personally disciplining" Josh). In the meantime, the molesting continued.
Rather than going straight to the police, Jim Bob told the elders of his church. When they finally acted, they put Josh in a BLP-run "Christian Rehabilitation Program" with an unlicensed counselor for three months, and had him do manual labor for a contractor.
When he got home, Jim Bob had a state trooper (who was a personal friend of the family) give him a "very stern talk". Said state trooper never filed a report. Oh, and he had a hard drive full of kiddy porn.
Yeah, Josh learned his lesson well, boy howdy.
f*ck Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, they have so much to answer for
imagine treating your daughter, who was a victim of your disgusting abuser son, worse than said disgusting abuser son, just because she dares to call you out and has a nose ring

Roe vs. Wade and the Quiverfull Movement
***Trigger warning: Christian Fundamentalism, sexual assault, Wicca, mental illness, religion*** The first time I was ever committed to a psyche ward due to my schitzoaffective (bi-polar type), I took comfort in reading some of the Psalms, even though I am not a Christian. Despite the fact that I don’t believe in the Bible, it still has some words of wisdom that have helped me realize my real…

I hate hearing about the Quiverfull movement. I hate hearing about it politically. I hate hearing about it from people who don't know anything about it. I hate hearing about it from people who only know the Duggars. I hate hearing about it from people who grew up next to it, but not in it. I hate hearing about it from women stuck in it right now. I hate hearing about it from women who were stuck in it. I hate the Quiverfull movement and I hate hearing about it.
#It got mentioned in the latest episode of Some More News and I'm so fucking upset#not by the video but just the concept cause it's with pictures of the Duggars and Im like#idk#it makes me feel weirdly hopeless#Im getting top surgery probably sometime this year if the surgeons approve me in a couple weeks#and I plan on getting a hysterectomy at some point for my endometriosis#which I know isn't a cure but it'll help#I don't plan to have kids but my family follows the Quiverfull idea#they aren't in the movement itself but they definitely follow the idea of be fruitful and multiply#I talked with my grandmother recently about my birth control implant and she joked about how if they had those back in the day#she would've stopped at 3 kids#she had 6 and says she wanted 12#at least#She stopped because another child would've killed her#and 6 children need 2 parents#but she joked about stopping at 3 then sighed and looked out distantly#and said well no I wouldn't have used it. Much observed but also highly entertaining the extent that fundies are worse at every discernible “home making” skill than many a group that they claim to be part of the Them group keeping women from their true roll as home makers
#I think there are many and highly complicated reasons behind this#A huge portion being the idealization of a past that never existed etc etc#Like the nine kids stay at home mom (with little Inter community help) who homeschools is just not a time equation that leaves time open fo#Cooking/cleaning/taking care of every child in an individual manner#The other unspoken elephant in the room is the extent that in the rare-r occasions there WAS the#Ye olden days Ma with her pristine white dress and nine pristine kids rather than an extended network of relatives/women etc etc#That social arrangement was only possible due to the working class women who did the cooking/cleaning/child care#In the South in particular the work of Black women. And for many of the periods fundies glorify? Enslaved women#Tw slavery#The cult of domesticity inseparable from classist and racist oppression etc etc#There’s just a lot going on with how outright bad fundies are at cooking and cleaning and that sort of thing#We won’t even touch on the parenting because that’s it’s own thing of a cultural structure that just creates intergenerational trauma from#The get go#But I think one of the big things to take away from the soc 101 kind of thing is like#Religious conservatism is deep in us cultural waters#But the whole fundie school of quiverfull related movements is NEW#It’s NEW#It’s a modern self-created culture from the 1970’s/80’s that can be classed in a group of similar religious revival movements#That shook politics around the world from that era as a reaction to “modernity” and which can be found in many cultures and religions#Inside and outside of the us#But as a fairly modern cultural construct there’s parents who assimilated into this culture and kind of formed it based on that idea of an#A past

(Valentina's POV)
Harvestfest was a wonderful time full of refreshment and family, but it’s also great to be back home and back in the swing of things. We were surprised one day with a light dusting of snow one morning, it didn’t stick but it was a great sign that the seasons are soon to change and that winter will be here before we know it! Recently at church our pastor preached a message on never wavering in our faith despite the changing seasons, and how timely his message was. There’s so much change happening all the time, yet we shouldn’t get caught up in our lives that we forget our God and his goodness to us! My uncle Allan preached the message on Harvest Sunday, and it was wonderful having almost all of our family in our grandfather’s church. The message that weekend was also apt and spoke about building a Godly legacy that will follow on even when we’re no longer on the earth. My grandparents made sure to live in a Godly manner and raise their children as such, and it was a good reminder to us grandkids that now that we’re having children we need to have the same fervour for the Lord and prioritize raising Godly children!
The kids have been excited to start school again, Aria is 8 turning 9 next year with Ansel turning 8 in the new year - so they’re only a grade apart with her starting 3rd and him starting 2nd. We use loads of different curriculums depending on how they teach different subjects, including the one that I used growing up, so I feel confident that I know the subject content inside and out since I was taught it and reviewed it. They both get right into homework after breakfast so they can be done and head outside to go play, we do quiet time with the younger kids if they’re up so that the mornings aren’t as hectic as they can get.
Since they're close in age, they're on the same level of piano and violin lessons. At home they have their own violins, but for piano they travel to a piano teacher's home for their lessons twice a week. We're in the process of looking at electric pianos so that we can get one for them to practice on. Music has always been important to me, growing up my parents showed us that music was an incredible way to worship the Lord, even the Bible says so. Having the kids play music that honours God will help them to redirect their thoughts to Him and keep worship of him in their hearts and minds, the hymns I was taught as a little girl still play in my head daily and I would love the same for them. Eric works from home so he's usually witness to their music lessons, thankfully for all of us the kids have been improving in their skills so the music is nicer to listen to - but regardless of how it sounds we always make sure to cheer them on.
Aria loves to keep the little kids occupied when I need a few minutes to recharge, she loves helping them with their learning cubes and getting them to say their letters, numbers, and colours. When we do family devotions we all pick our word of the month, and Aria (after learning the definition) chose patience and her word of the month. She says that having younger siblings is a way the the Lord teaches you patience, and I have to agree with her! She only ever engages with them for around 15 minutes as a toddlers attention span is only so long, but she says that those 15 minutes are enough for her in the moment 😂.
Eric has been teaching the kids how to ride a bike, he takes each kid out on their own so they can move at their own pace. Ansel is slightly more apprehensive than Aria, to our surprise, you'd think that the little boy would be all gung-ho about bike riding, but in this case it's Aria who has more confidence! Eric says she's be zipping around in no time!
My sister Sabrina came to stay with us too, Tucker was out of town on farm business with his parents so Sabrina and little Campbell came to see us. She's in her second trimester now and will have a gender reveal with the family at Celeste's wedding to reveal what this newest blessing will be! While she was over we looked at baby names, they won't reveal the name until the baby is born but at least we got her down to a shortlist of names. I'm out of my pregnancy/labour & delivery season of life, and I've enjoyed getting to pour into those around me who are just entering motherhood - especially my younger sisters and sisters-in-law. The Lord having Sabrina live close to me feels like a blessing in that I get to be here for my sister, along with the fact that we have each other for support. We're headed to Britechester in a few weeks for her final dress fitting, she wants all the sisters there for her final fitting as she's only had one or two of us there at a time for her earlier fittings. She's asked Macie and I to be her maid and matron of honour, so we're in the process of arranging schedules for a nice bachelorette weekend for her. She wants something small with her loved ones, so we're aiming at renting a cabin and heading up the mountains for some fun in the snow to take advantage of the winter weather.
Zach was also with us after Harvestfest, he stayed for a bit to spend some time with Kelsey. It's heartwarming seeing my younger siblings meet their person and work to build the firm foundations needed for a Godly relationship. Kelsey is such a wonderful girl and makes Zach so happy, hopefully there's news of an engagement soon!

like ok i get with economics especially environmental economics overexploitation of finite resources is a huge and legitimate concern, but idk man proposing that people should 'have a conscience' and 'stop/slow down breeding' in order to preserve those resources seems pretty textbook eugenics rhetoric to me
#txt tag#liveblogging my assigned reading for class ig#but its like. the shit irt the tragedy of the commons that ticks me off#is that it seens to ignore the reasons WHY people have a lot of kids - yes there are christofash movements like quiverfulls and the rest#that seek to produce as many children as possible in order to fulfill a white suprem. doctrine#but those are often a minority movement (at least last time i checked .....)#compared to the majority of people who have big families in order to more equally distribute the labor needed to sustain themselves#and that imo arises from a lack of resources which hot damn would you ever guess are extremely unequally distributed?? no way so crazyyy

Talk of the "4B" movement on here is a great way to see a lot of people declare "oh, they'll probably be saying it's transphobic soon" before dropping unalloyed transphobia. I mean, the top posts are all posts mocking the idea that it's being used by TERFs posted by people whose bios identify themselves as radfems and whose tags say radfems can interact, and making posts just saying things like "leftists will claim it's transphobic to class trans women with men", so we're not exactly dealing with a savvy covert operation here
But that misses the larger point that in this context going on Strike Against Men is pointless. It's all based on the assumption that it's incels driving Trump's victory, but that's a very online assumption to make, because it was evangelicals, and evangelical men only date evangelical women. They won't even notice any movement, because there's no shortage of women who support the misogynistic culture of evangelical America.
This is a thorny thing to talk about since while they're all victims of patriarchal brainwashing, yeah, there are a substantial amount of women in this country who have embraced it, who are against feminism, who think they should be quiverfull housewives with a dozen kids and no notions, and who think that lifestyle should be forced on other women. Conservative women are often oppressed by the restrictions placed on women by conservative culture, but also many of them enforce those restrictions. The idea of a large group of women enthusiastically co-signing their oppression is haunting. So it's unsurprising that for many, the response to that is to ignore it: to retreat back into a worldview of men who support Trump and women who oppose him
The incel is a descriptor of a certain type of angry, isolated young man, but it's a term that's overused until it's presented as the bulk of the right. I regret to inform you most MAGA men are, in fact, getting laid; they do have wives and girlfriends, who are themselves often MAGA. A majority of white women voted for Trump, after all. Of course presenting women as a united front for liberation against a lonely oppressor class would sound more appealing than that reality, but it's also a useless model for accomplishing anything, since it's, well, not reality

Back in my day, we called "tradwives" quiverfullers and didn't erase the fact that the movement was built out of a bunch of Christian nationalist cults, and that women were not and are not the movement's leaders.

the social utility of the concept of "kink" is that it compartmentalizes sexual activity. if something is a kink it is obviously not normative (i.e., the holder of the kink is not trying to make a claim about universal values or purposes when it comes to sexual activity) even if it is normal (in the sense it is statistically common and/or socially acceptable), both within society at large and within individual relationships (a kink can be confined purely to the metaphorical bedroom)
this is why a breeding kink is not the same as being part of the quiverfull movement, and why bdsm is not "normalizing abuse." kink is in that sense a really useful social technology to have, because it lets you make a distinction between desire and values, between id and superego, between social roles you might inhabit temporarily with your partner or partners and more fundamental aspects of politics and identity
and i think some of--not all, and maybe not even most, but some--of the appeal of more traditionalist values and gender roles relies people thinking such a separation doesn't or can't really exist. one of the ways in which that kind of divisible conception of desire and identity threatens conservative conceptions of sexuality is that it says that even if at the lizard brain/fundamental sexual appeal level of your psyche those relations appeal to you, you do not actually need them to prevail in society at large to still have a satisfying sex life, or even a satisfying relationship.
all of which is to say (contra an old tweet i saw recently) "breeding kink" isn't a contradiction in terms! it's actually a really useful concept! but also that it's useful to conservatives of all social stripes to pretend that this obvious feature of kink doesn't exist--the separation of desire and reality, the ability to, basically, gamify sex ("cops and robbers for grownups with your pants off," to borrow a phrase)--because if you are attentive to this feature, efforts to freak the normies out with the sexual practices of certain subcultures are a harder sell.

Okay that totally makes sense and what I assumed, because god, I could see that being part of the sticking point and issues Daemon had, and the audacity when Daemon was like 'YES GIVE ME RUNESTONE' in canon. And also lends more weight to the 'my hand is all over you' before Yorick tries to kill him again.
Grampa Yorbert just regretting letting Daemon into the house because he pissed all over everything oh god.
So in the Yoreen Wedding, Yorick clads Shireen in a bronze groom cloak instead of Targaryen. Does Yorick take the name 'Yorick Royce' when he becomes Lord of Runestone much like the 'Jace becomes Jace Targaryen when he ascends the throne'?
Yes!
So, I've been having the Roycegaryens pretty interchangeably use their parents' last names (I even use both in my "do not lose your way" character notes) due to the whole "king's brother who inherits nothing/ruling Lady of Runestone" thing. Royce has just always felt more, like, correct in my brain because of the daddy issues & murder & whatnot.
Moving forward after the death thing, Ella & Aemon pretty much just drop Targaryen as an option unless they need that extra oomph (& even then, Ella's more likely to use it), because for them it was an option. For Yorick, though, I've been writing & working under the...assumption? headcanon? that "the one who inherits Runestone after my daughter will use the Royce name" was one of the very few things Lord Yorbert pushed King Jaehaerys on. Something something names are important, something something you gotta keep your vassals happy, something something "please let Daemon come back so I don't have to deal with him"

I should probably google this...
Naaah, too unreliable, let us ask the high on ketamine person traumatised by catholic school instead!
What exactly is this "quiverful bullshit" you mentioned some weeks ago?
First off good choice I am the best Google
Second, it's this movement by Christians to create more Christians by having as many babies as possible. Like the SECOND a couple is married they need to start popping out kids until the woman can no longer physically give birth. Which leads to a lot of women dying from birth complications.
If you ever see a Tiktok that's like "watch me make lunch for my twelve kids!" It's a 9/10 chance it's a quiverfull family

This didn’t quite fit into my response to the mpreg survey, but I’ve been thinking about it and wanted to mention it to you somewhere— I’ve noticed that a lot of mpreg content has a passive or even overtly pro-life stance. The most dramatic outliers are what stick with me ofc (I once read a fic where Shen Jiu said he wouldn’t get an abortion because “he’s not a child murderer”. The irony.) but for they most part it’s just a subtle slant. Do you think this is caused by the fact that, by the plot’s necessity, they gotta force their blorbo to have that baby (inserting moral objections to abortion like a horror movie inserts reasons for cell phones not to work)? Do you think that people with that belief set are more likely to have a pregnancy kink? Do you have other ideas for causes I’m not considering?
Ok I can only speak to things I've read and other responses I've seen (that fic sounds so ?????) so I do have to say the majority of things I've read (esp in scum villain) are mostly pro choice leaning where if a character gets pregnant they're given the chance to abort and usually don't take it (insert sy voice binghe I would never abort you) (however I do remember reading a wangxian fic where lwj drives his coworker wwx to a clinic to get an abortion (pre wangxian relationship) because lwj wanted to support wwx in his decision bc lwj was horrified that his mother was never given a choice on whether or not she wanted to be a mother and suffered a lot because of that, which was a really interesting subversion on the topic I think)
There is a trend I've seen in the responses to the poll where some people appreciate mpreg as a genre that takes bodily autonomy to a sort of emphasized issue, particularly outside of omegaverse/transfic (responses on whether or not people see trans pregnancies as mpreg were actually pretty even from all demographic groups) where there's this heightened sense of unexpectedness and urgency to the idea of pregnancy. As far as I know, there are a nonzero amount of people who use this framework to work through their own issues with a sense of detachment-- for example, many people mentioned having pro-life family members in real life who are pressuring them to get pregnant, and they like mpreg that either subverts that idea (what if a character was given the space to get pregnant on their own terms with full family support) or portrays it to an extreme (what if a character was being forced to not abort) but from the safe distance of fiction where they can just pull away whenever things get too real. It gives them a sense of agency and control over a situation that in real life they don't have control over, similar to how a lot of trauma kinks work.
Of course, there are equal numbers of people who are vehemently uncomfortable with that as well, so that should be considered too. On a broader demographic level, since much of fandom skews (unfortunately) American, there's also of course the probability that a lot of people have just grown up with heavy evangelical pro-life beliefs/influences, and this either consciously or subconsciously affects the way they view pregnancy as a topic. In terms of the actual heavy pro-life evangelicals, I think the majority of them would be opposed to mpreg on the basis of lgbt topics (lol) but it has been long speculated that quiverfull movement and adjacent adherent people do have some form of pregnancy kink that unfortunately they work out in real life on real children rather than in fiction, based on how they treat their coming baby/themselves while pregnant versus how they actually treat their children when they come out (unfortunately very poorly in most cases)
Anywayy that's all kind of speculation, but I hope that helps a little bit. There are always people with a billion different reasons for everything, and it would be impossible to capture those all in the span of a Tumblr ask response, but I hope this gives you something to chew on! If anyone else would like to add things to this feel free to reply or reblog or send another ask with your thoughts, it would be much appreciated :)

Hiiiii as a queer person living in the Bible Belt of the USA, I’m envisioning a “Christian trauma AU / general theology AU” because you know my main focus is always Sanji. This assumed that we’re in the USA, modern era, and I guess maybe a college or post grad AU for how they meet each other? This is a lonnnnnnnng text post so scroll at your own risk. To keep it from being toooo long I’m also sticking to east blue crew.
Hear me out:
There are a million different sects of Christianity so we’ve got a ton of angles to use.
Garp is catholic (but think FRENCH laïcité instead of American Amy Coney Barret Supreme Court justice weird catholic cult), Dragon straight up rebels against the strict structure and goes about his atheist ways. Neither of them really raise Luffy anyway so 💁🏻
Luffy ends up being agnostic. It’s not that he doesn’t believe in a higher power but he knows he needs to take action and that he can’t rely on a higher power to fix the problems of the world. Very Albert Camus, revolting against the absurd and holding himself to a higher responsibility in life
Zoro comes from a Shinto or Buddhist background. He’s not judging anyone’s religious beliefs unless they’re harming others.
Nami has religious trauma from the Baptist church that set up in her town and made it impossible to be herself. Belle Mere is so clearly queer and she’s harassed and dies at the hands of some zealous bigots who were emboldened by the words of the local Baptist church pastor (Arlong)
Ussop comes from a chill Protestant background (maybe Presbyterian?) But he’s more of a CEO (Christmas Easter Only) in terms of actually attending any sort of church. Honestly, with his dad out of the picture and his mom dying, he just had bigger things on his mind like living every day.
Finally, Sanji. Oh boy, Sanji has major “Quiverfull movement Christian” trauma from Judge. For those who don’t know, quiverfull is a Christian extremist movement where the idea is to have as many kids as possible and adhere to very strict purity rules and gender roles. Contraception isn’t allowed. Women wear long skirts and non fitted shirts to hide their womanly form (ew), and most of the time these parents homeschool there kids to avoid the “temptation” or “impurity” of modern society.
Judge had these 5 kids who he’s raised in this faith but Sanji never liked how Judge treated his mom. Why was Sora supposed to be “seen and not heard?” Why was it ok for his brothers to use scripture to bully and hurt and spread hate? Why would a loving god create women just to subjugate them? Judge wouldn’t like this, and once Sora passes away (probably because Judge wouldn’t let her seek medical care post birth of the quadruplets, so her health deteriorated for years), Judge locks him up and makes him do all sorts of horrible “prayer” and “repentance” practices, which are really just abuse.
Sanji would maybe escape when they go into town to get something mundane like a printer or a new wifi router (which only judge is allowed to use the internet). He’d probably bolt first chance he gets and when he meets Zeff, Zeff can recognize the signals of abuse. He takes Sanji in and even though Sanji never believed women were less than men, he still has years of trauma and gender roles beaten into him that he has to unpack.
His choice to cook? That’s a huge rebellion. Wearing tight fitting suits that look sinful? That’s a middle finger to his dad. He always treats women like goddesses because he feels so much guilt for the sins of his father. When he finally joins the Strawhats, he’s so overwhelmed with how free and nonjudgmental they are (of important stuff, obviously they’ll still poke fun at small stuff) that he feels comfortable dropping little comments here and there, opening up.
Ussop will be comforting Nami about something and sanji will tell him is so refreshing to see a man be so nurturing. He goes to Ussop often, asking how he’s so confident sharing his emotions.
Nami will be ordering them around and he’ll do everything she says with a smile, just happy to see her free to do what she wants (which is be a bossy bitch)
Zoro will talk about Kuina one night and Sanji will sob, overwhelmed with joy that she got to have all that strength and a friend like zoro even when faced with hurtful gender expectations.
Luffy above all is the most jarring for him. He grew up hearing about sin and sinners and temptation and evil but when he sees Luffy doing his thing, taking down bad people, fighting for the underdog, he knows that if there is a God (he she it they? Who cares), Luffy is doing their work.
——————
Bonus Gay Cherry on top is that Sanji meets Iva and gets into drag, starts performing, does some events, and through that gender liberation is able to find some peace in who he is, tucking away all the hate he was born into. And he ends up with zoro the end bye
