Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal is a 2019 Caldecott Honor Book that's found on the ALA Book Resume for being challenged, and tells the story of a young girl named Alma asking about her name.

Summary

Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela thinks her name is too long and goes to ask her dad about why she has so many names. Her dad then tells her the story of her name, and Alma realizes her name might fit her after all.

Justification

I needed to select a banned or challenged book, and when my first pick on the ALA Book Resume ended up being out of the publication range, I had to look for another one. I found this book, and the illustration caught my eye. The fact that red is the only color used on the cover and throughout the book was something that stood out to me.

Evaluation

The three criteria used for evaluation are Style and Language, Illustration, and Mood.

The style and language of the book is perfect for a story book, as it’s kept simple and repetitive to be read aloud to younger readers. There’s not too many words on the page, but there’s enough to paint a picture of each of the relatives Alma is named after. The names themselves are also wonderful because they come from a place of heritage, instead of any stereotypical names that could possibly be seen in some forms of media.

The illustrations of the book are charming and beautiful, at first maybe seeming like there’s a lack of color. However, the only colors used in this book are red and blue, and it helps make what’s on the page pop. It draws emphasis to Alma and different pieces of family history that make up her name in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming, or like the color is reserved specifically for these moments. However, it makes the book feel like one that has to be picked out by a parent or teacher, as the lack of multiple colors might draw younger readers away.

The mood of Alma and How She Got Her Name is lighthearted and encourages kids with lengthy names to find out what their names mean to learn about their heritage and embrace the long names. The book starts with Alma feeling the way many of these young readers might feel, which is that their name is too long and doesn’t fit, and with the set mood of encouragement and learning, they’ll be inclined to embrace that long name after they ask about what they were named after. Never in the book is there a point to show that kids should feel ashamed about a long name.

I said it before in a previous rant, but I feel like this story needs repeating for no particular reason whatsoever.

my middle school was very small. there was only one class of 18 kids in the entire 6th grade. we had to deal with each other every single day. I only started this school in 6th grade, but some of these kids have known each other since pre-k. so when I joined, I was a stranger, an outcast, someone different. and having undiagnosed autism did not help at all.

one of my classmates was named Jacob. he was the only kid shorter than me. but he was an aggressive bully. every day, he'd grab me, slap me, pull my hair. he'd torment me physically, call me names, the whole shebang. typical bully stuff. there was never a reason for this, other than I was a new kid. I was a faggot. I was a downey. I was a retard. I was a sissy. I was a pussy. I was "the other". I think Jacob somehow knew I was trans and queer about five years before I did, and treated me as you'd expect.

every single day, I'd complain to my teachers and the principal. "Jacob is bullying me. he's hitting me, calling me names, harassing me, even after I tell him to leave me alone". and the responses I got did not help.

"just leave. walk away" gee, thanks. I'd love to. unfortunately I'm stuck in a classroom with him all day. unless you're gonna let me go home early, your advice is worthless.

"stop being a tattletale" and just let him continue to bully me? wow, thanks for being a supportive adult figure in my life...

and I'll never forget what my hardcore conservative catholic principal said to me. "if you don't want him to call you a faggot, then stop being a faggot".

in all of these situations of begging for help, not once did Jacob ever face consequences for his actions. even when I showed them the bruises and horrible notes he gave me. even when the harassment happened right in front of the teachers. the most he would ever receive is "hey, both of you, stop fighting!" even though it was always one sided and I never fought back.

until one day on the bus. he was in the seat behind me, poking my head, slapping me, trying to get my attention. I was already pissed that day, and Jacob was only making things worse. I told him to stop. repeatedly. to just leave me alone. but he didn't.

without thinking about it, I tried to swat away his hands. but I ended up brushing my hand against his face. he interpreted this as a slap. he immediately got off the bus at his stop and ran home crying.

that afternoon, my mom got a phone call saying that I was at risk of being expelled. apparently, Jacob had told his parents that I had beat him up, and his parents called the school.

in the end, because of my accidental unintentional "slap" that I had only done because I was angry and wanted to be left alone and stop being bullied, I was suspended for a week, forced to write a handwritten apology note to Jacob, and fell behind in my classes.

Jacob was never punished. he never faced consequences for his actions. he was always seen as the victim by adults. I was the aggressor since I was mad and complained about being bullied.

soon after this, I attempted suicide. I backed out, thankfully. but I can't stop thinking about how my life almost ended because no one cared about the harassment I faced.

being harassed, and having no one do anything about it, which causes you to get angry until you act a tiny bit irrational and upset, and suddenly you're punished much harder than your attackers ever were and ever will be.

I'm saying this for no reason at all. it totally doesn't apply to any real life situations happening right now on tumblr.

The warm British summer air was buzzing with energy, filled with the hum of engines revving and the chatter of excited fans at Silverstone’s MotoGP weekend. Lando Norris had been attending the event with his best friend, Max Fewtrell, who had been as much a part of Lando's racing journey as anyone else. Max was a solid rock in his life—honest, blunt, and always willing to poke fun when the situation called for it.

They were sitting in a VIP lounge, watching the pre-race activities unfold, when Max caught a glimpse of Lando's phone screen. Lando didn’t notice at first, too distracted by the noise in the room, the chatter of other people, and his own wandering thoughts. But Max did. And what he saw wasn’t the usual stream of racing news or memes.

It was Amelie.

Her Instagram feed was front and center, the familiar sight of her vibrant posts catching Lando’s eye. He was scrolling through her latest photos from her concerts. Each post was meticulously curated—an artist’s passion reflected in every image. But Lando wasn’t just scrolling through her feed out of idle curiosity. There was something more there, a quiet ache behind his eyes as he tapped through every post.

Max raised an eyebrow, leaning over to peer at Lando’s screen. —Mate,— he said with a smirk, —are you actually stalking her right now?—

Lando froze, his thumb pausing mid-scroll. He looked at Max, a sheepish grin tugging at the corner of his lips. —No. Just… just looking at her posts. They’re, you know, everywhere. She’s doing well.—

Max leaned back in his chair, a grin spreading across his face. —Sure. Whatever you say, mate.— He leaned in closer, his voice dropping in mock seriousness, —Is this the part where you tell me you’ve totally moved on?—

Lando sighed, rolling his eyes as he stuffed his phone into his pocket. —Stop, Max.—

—Mate, come on, I know you better than that,— Max teased, nudging Lando with his shoulder. —You’re still hung up on her, aren’t you?—

Lando opened his mouth to deny it but stopped himself. The truth hung in the air like a thick fog, and for the first time in a long while, Lando let himself admit it. —Yeah… I guess I am.—

Max didn’t hesitate. —You’re still in love with her, Lando.—

The words hit harder than Lando had expected. He’d been running from the thought for months, burying it under the distractions of racing, relationships, and whatever bullshit he could get lost in. But hearing it out loud—he couldn’t deny it. There it was.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. —I don’t know, Max. I mean... it’s been a fucking long time. We haven’t talked in over a year.—

Max leaned back, considering it for a moment. —So? Does that mean you just forget everything? You and Amelie were good, mate. I’ve seen it myself. Even after all the drama, I don’t think you’ve really moved on. But you’ve been pretending to.—

Lando’s throat tightened. He didn’t want to think about it, but Max was right. He’d buried that part of himself, pretending it didn’t matter while casually seeing Magui Corceiro. Sure, it was easy, no strings attached. But every time he saw Amelie’s face—every time he saw how happy she was, living her dream—it felt like a punch to the gut.

—Why did you have to go and bring her up again?— Lando muttered, his voice quieter now, as if he were speaking more to himself than Max.

—Because it’s obvious, mate,— Max replied. —You’re still carrying a torch for her. I know you, Lando.—

Lando leaned back in his chair, staring at the screen in front of him, the lights and sounds of Silverstone almost blurring into the background. He didn’t want to talk about this. He didn’t want to feel it. But he was getting tired of pretending.

—I don’t know how I’m supposed to fix it, Max. I messed up. I fucked everything up when we were together. It wasn’t just the distance or the fact that I got caught up with other people... it was me. I was stupid. And now... now, she’s living her dream. She’s got everything she ever wanted. And I’m still sitting here, like a dumbass, thinking about what could’ve been.—

Max’s tone shifted, no longer teasing but serious. —Maybe it’s not too late, Lando. Maybe you need to stop pretending and go for it. Go fix things with her. You’re the one holding back. You keep telling yourself she’s moved on, that she doesn’t care anymore. But you don’t know that. You haven’t even tried.—

Lando ran a hand through his hair, the frustration evident in his eyes. —Max, I’m not some fucking idiot. You don’t know her like I do. You don’t know what we’ve been through. I don’t think she’s gonna want to even look at me after everything that happened. It’s been too long, too much time has passed.—

—You’re right,— Max said, his voice softening. —It’s been a while. But does that mean you should just give up? Because, let me tell you something, Lando. If you don’t do something about this, if you keep pretending it doesn’t matter... you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.—

Lando swallowed hard, a knot tightening in his stomach. It was hard to admit, but Max was right. There was a part of him that had always believed they’d find a way back to each other. But it felt like an impossible dream now. Amelie had moved on. Hell, he’d moved on. Sort of.

—I’m not sure, man. I’m pretty fucking sure that if I went to her now and told her I wanted to try again, she’d just laugh in my face,— Lando said, the bitterness creeping into his words. —She’s got a life now. She’s got everything she ever wanted. And I’ve got... what? A situationship with someone I don’t even care about? Yeah. That sounds great.—

Max leaned forward, looking at Lando with a serious expression. —Mate, you’ve got to stop making excuses. You know how much she cared about you. And if you still care about her, then you’ve got to give it a shot. You’ll never know unless you try.—

Lando’s chest felt tight, the weight of Max’s words sitting heavily on him. Was he really ready to face that? To confront his past mistakes and ask Amelie for a second chance? Or would she just reject him? Laugh at him?

—I don’t know,— Lando muttered, more to himself than to Max. —I don’t think I can handle getting rejected again. Not by her.—

Max didn’t say anything at first, letting the silence stretch between them. Finally, he clapped Lando on the back. —Well, mate, you’re gonna have to decide sooner or later. Because if you don’t, you’re just going to keep lying to yourself. And deep down, I think you know the truth. You still want her.—

Lando exhaled slowly, his mind spinning with all the possibilities. —Yeah. I still want her,— he whispered, the realization hitting him with full force.

Max nodded, leaning back in his chair. —Then go after her. Don’t waste any more time.—

Lando sat in silence, staring off into the distance. Max’s words echoed in his head, and for the first time in a long time, he allowed himself to think about Amelie—not just as the girl he used to be with, but as someone he might still want in his life.

The future was uncertain. But one thing was clear: he couldn’t keep running from his feelings.

And maybe, just maybe, it was time to face them.

Thinking about how Yosen High is canonically a Christian school which is so amusing to me as someone who went to a Christian school from pre-K to 1st grade and then a Catholic school from 2nd grade to 6th grade. I'm just thinking about the customs I used to follow in religious schools and thought I'd use my perspective to list out customs Murasakibara likely also had to follow.

Mandatory religious class once a week

Mandatory mass/church services once a week that replaced a chunk of our morning classes

The entire cafeteria saying a group prayer at lunchtime or picking one person per day to say the prayer for the whole cafeteria before eating

Learning hymns/gospel music (even funnier for Murasakibara because he canonically sucks at singing)

Religiously themed Christmas and Easter concerts and plays for our parents during the winter and spring

Taking communion and confessing sins to the pastor (or priest, in my case) every once in a while

Getting in trouble for using the Lord's name in vain

Encouraged to help out in our community (and according to the KNB wiki Yosen canonically makes their students do annual volunteer work so imagine wandering around Akita and seeing this purple giant sweeping the streets or picking up trash LMAO)

Owns a bible (that probably is filled with scribbles, doodles, and vague annotations)

Those are all the ones I can think of at the top of my head. Luckily, my schools weren't super strict since the churches I attended were non-denominational. And my parents only sent my sister and I to Catholic school because the quality of the curriculum was good, but they refused to let us actually convert to Catholicism. We were really just there for the education, LOL.

TRACK 01. Espresso (orig. by SABRINA CARPENTER) is a funk-pop English song written by Nari and produced by Julian Bunetta. On Genius, she explains that she compares herself to coffee to emphasize how energetic her partner gets with her. The lyrics further explain that she can get the guy— any guy— and she is this person’s dream come true. Nari references pop culture with Nintendo and Mountain Dew in this song.

TRACK 02. Melting (orig. by KALI UCHIS) is a dreamy love song written by Nari and Kino and produced by IO and Diplo. The song details falling in love with someone who makes you lose all your worries.

TRACK 03. Rooftop * (orig. by YOOA) is a hip-hop dance number with addictive string sounds and the booming percussion sound of an 808 bass written by Nari and Ryder Kim, produced by Jimmi. On Genius, Nari states, “Rooftop compares the line between reality and dreams to a rooftop— and a bird in the cage represents being stuck, and the bird wants to fly away and be free.”

TRACK 04. Kitty Cat * (orig. by JULIE of KISS OF LIFE) is a hip-hop based pop genre song composed of both vocals and rap. It’s written by Nari and Jennie, produced by IO. The song defies society’s expectations that a woman should be tame and submissive, and Nari is exactly the opposite. The lyrics further that while it may she like she has everything, she feels unloved and feels objectified and controlled by those around her. The societal “gaze” becomes too much for her to handle, and she just wants to break free from everyone’s expectations.

TRACK 05. Nothing (orig. by KISS OF LIFE) is a medium-tempo R&B song inspired by the 2000s written by Nari and Lainey, produced by Sade. The song is about a love reaching its end, a love that changed and the lack of emotion in the relationship.

TRACK 06. Sugar Rush (orig. by BIBI) is a playful and empowering anthem with upbeat R&B pop with a sparse hip-hop beat. It’s written by Nari and Pink Slip and was produced by Pink Slip and inverness. The song emphasizes Nari’s allure and charm while also warning those who try to take advantage. This song in particular is popular for its lyrics, hidden meaning in lyrics and surprise guest appearances by the rest of BLACKPINK in the music video.

TRACK 07. Don’t Let Me Go (ft. GIRIBOY) (orig. by JEON SOMI & GIRIBOY) is an upbeat song with a catchy whistle tune and smooth rapping featuring K-rapper and producer, GIRIBOY. The song discusses the need to be with the one you love.

Espresso was released first as a surprise with one teaser announced on social media on May 6th, 2024 at 12AM KST. The song was an English pre-release single.

The music video for Espresso had 76 million views in the first 24 hours. It debuted at #1 on Worldwide iTunes Songs Chart, as well as charting #1 on Bugs and Genie, #3 on MelOn, and #94 on Flo. On all music platforms, the single cover was what captured many attention.

Melting was soon announced with teasers posted on May 8th, 2024. It received over 200k pre-orders in the first 24 hours and within two weeks, it had 1.5million pre-orders.

There are two versions of the album, HEART and FACE.

Melting was released across all platforms on May 27th, 2024. All songs charted in the top 100 across Bugs, Genie, and MelOn. Rooftop debuted at #97 on Flo. The track Sugar Rush was banned from music shows.

Rooftop gained 59 million views within 24 hours, debuting at #1 on Bugs and Genie, #2 on MelOn and #97 on Flo. Nari promoted Rooftop on Korean music shows for two weeks, gaining seven music show wins during the time but in total had eleven wins for the song and performed Kitty Cat three times.

Nari promoted Espresso first, after she went to the Met Gala. She performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

She also went on Genius Verified to explain the lyrics, along with Wired! for Nari Answers the Web’s Most Searched Questions.

She was super excited to do the Puppy Interview with Buzzfeed, she even posted a selfie teaser before the video and some videos on her Instagram once the video was out.

When promoting in Korea, she made sure to go on a lot of variety shows, mostly because she never got the chance before.

She went on Jaefriends, Knowing Bros, Let’s Eat, XYOB, The K-Star Next Door with Jonathan, D&E’s Wanna Come Here, PSICK Show, and The Killing Voice. She really enjoyed being on all of them, making sure to show her appreciation for being invited.

Nari explained on Genius Verified about Teenager in Love, “It’s not about anyone you know.”

VIE Entertainment (Nari) posted a live performance and dance practice for Espresso, Rooftop, and Kitty Cat on YouTube. Along with a lot of vlogs after the era was over, including her GRWM video for the Met Gala (which was posted before), preparing for her comeback, videos of her in the studio, etc.

She also opened her own TikTok account and began posting dance challenges with other idols, along with current trending challenges. She was the first idol Jennie did the Spot challenge with, and likewise for Espresso and Rooftop.

On social media, BLINKs were more ruthless than ever with getting rid of hate posts. VIE Entertainment also had to post a statement about taking legal action against malicious posts.

If she knew anything about said malicious posts, she never spoke out against them or seemed down at any point.

Not once did Nari answer any questions about Jungkook if she was asked by a reporter who couldn’t get the memo, known for either staring at them in silence until they changed the topic or laughing and ignoring them. But everyone knew they were still together as it somehow got out that she went to visit him.

Each time she went somewhere to a known schedule, she had multiple bodyguards with her just in case. And even for her just being out, she had bodyguards with her, no matter what. Which a lot of BLINKs (and Nari’s circle) were glad for.

All in all, it was a really good surprise comeback for Nari.

spanish - well i went to uni for this one which is pretty cringe in a way german - self studied since 6th grade when i wanted sasunaru yaoi so bad and my only access i could get it was a german anime website so i used a literal dictionary. which wound up netting me a foreign exchange visit in high school so that was dope romanian - got really into balkan hip-hop and REALLY into 20th century romanian history (same could be said for serbian/cyrillic in general but romania is my hashtag special interest) so it came with the territory danish - i just read the same phrasebook/dictionary for a year and used it to translate nephew songs and web 2.0 forum posts japanese - weeb since pre-k. transliterated the entirety of dir en grey's vulgar 2003 to hiragana/katakana. also spend a lot of time in the fujosphere since elementary. hundreds of dollars spent on merch as an adult dude you'll pick up some shit hangul - transliterated a couple songs one week and learned the alphabet

Things I headcanon that would have happened to the batkids at one point in middle school that happened to me. (even if some of them weren't in middle school at all) Part 2:

Ooohh, so close! It was the first one, I have traveled internationally before (went to Italy for a month).

Now for the promised story!

So, my schooling started out as normally as anyone else in the US' does; pre-k, kindergarten, 1st through 3rd grades. It was that fateful 3rd grade that things changed, though. Turns out my bibliophilic little ass was so good at reading that I was capable of testing out of my grade level completely. But my parents didn't want me to not be able to socialize with my peers, so they only put me in 4th grade English. Just, English.

Which ended up sticking with me the entire rest of my elementary and middle school career. I was going to 6th grade English as a 5th grader, and I was one of the best students in the class. So when 7th grade rolled around, and I was 8th grade English, aka the last middle school year, I got to go to the 8th grade graduation party! It was on a cruise ship, which was pretty cool.

But then! We moved to a different county that summer! And I had to change schools. So I ended up taking 8th grade English twice; thereby going to my own middle school graduation two separate times.

Molly Ostertag's graphic novel The Hidden Witch serves as a sequel to another graphic novel of hers, and dives into the world of magic and stereotype breaking standards, bringing a refreshing read to the world of graphic novels.

Summary

Aster is trying to get to used to being a witch and not a shapeshifter, like every other boy in his family was when his friend Charlie, from the non-magic part of town, has a curse attached to her. Now having to juggle his classes to help catch up with the other witches and helping his friend before more people end up cursed, or hurt.

Justification

I needed to select a graphic novel for my reading to help finish off the list, and I found it on the ALA Book Resume. I'd already selected my book for the banned/challenged category, so I decided to use it for the graphic novel category. The illustration of the cover caught my eye because I recognized Ostertag's style, and I went to get the book to read.

Evaluation

The three criteria used for evaluation are Style and Language, Plot, and Illustration.

There’s not much for style and language as this is a graphic novel, but the bits of dialogue support the scenery and flow naturally to carry conversation. The use of sound words is also helpful to support the illustrations and the scenery, and do a great job of not being too overwhelming and overtaking the panels in the novel. The dialogue feels natural and like it would be between kids nowadays and paints a realistic picture of the world the novel takes place in.

The plot of the story is also nice, but it’s hard to determine the main conflict and antagonist of the story until later on in the story. It might be because this book is a sequel to another graphic novel, but it’s still tough to find that big question right at the start of the novel that pushes the plot forward. However, once it’s established that they need to find a witch that needs their help and that Aster needs to finish his lessons with his grandma to better understand his magic, the plot flows along and wraps up nicely.

Similarly to The Girl from the Sea, Ostertag’s illustration style is that in-between style to not be too young or too old for readers. Not too cartoonish to feel like it’s a picture book, but not too realistic to make it feel like it’s too old for them. The expressions of this novel and the way emotion is portrayed through the faces, body language, and even the magic that’s illustrated on the page. The colors are bright as well and catch the emotion of the scene being placed in front of the readers.

Im basing this off of my vbs, so the youth group minimum is just finished 6th grade . so when darry was starting youth, ponyboy would’ve been in the pre-k group.

Timeline for this is probably gonna be canon ages, just modern au.

K ACTUAL HEADCAONS !!

(the first two are when pony’s 10, darry’s 16, and sodapop’s 12)

Darry gets placed with ponyboy . pony’s practically attached to his hip, he doesn’t know anyone in there and he probably had separation anxiety when he was younger, like he does NOT wanna be there 😭🗣️

Sodapop’s with the first and second graders, they LOVE him. He’s always hyping them up and talking to them, he js seems good with kids.

Sodapop is THE DANCER, he has EVERY dance fully memorized (he made ponyboy and darry memorize it, too) he’s so hyped up. He’s singing and dancing, the fourth graders lowkey love him and yelling with him

Darry’s the rec leader. He came up with most of the games, he’s really fun with it. His voice is loud enough to get kid’s attention and not scare them.

Ponyboy’s with the pre-k or kindergarten. I see him being more quiet and laid-back with the kids. He’s stern when he needs to be but that’s rare. He’s KILLER at church clap though(if u dont know what that is,, please search it up it’s SO fun)

Literally EVERYONE knows them. They don’t go to church as much, but their parents knew everyone and introduced them. Even new people know them, they’re like urban legends in town.

They eat the dinner they serve for volunteers alot. They get the leftovers, too. It serves them a full week

(there’s a vending machine in the rec room) soda and darry have gotten into fights over this . it goes on until ponyboy walks in and buys food and gives it to them, then walks out. He doesn’t speak through all of this. The other youth workers are on the floor crying laughing. This moment goes down in history for their church.

Ponyboy wanted to fight his group leader, she made him uncomfy (when he confessed this to darry and sodapop, they almost fought her)

After vbs ends, the youth group goes to do stuff

(schedule is sunday night, dairy queen, monday night ultimate frisbee at the church yard, tuesday laser tag, wednesday is pool party for context)

Darry is in charge of the youth group, sodapop already knows everyone so he has insights on what they prefer and he know most of the older kids,

Sodapop talks to everyone constantly. He knows everyone’s names, they ALL love him lowkey 💀 ponyboy’s more quiet, he doesn’t talk to ANYONE. He’s the youngest at the hangouts after vbs.

Everyone thinks he’s socially anxious. He’s not, he could talk at anytime and not get made fun of, he just doesn’t wanna talk.

He talks more the last two nights, but that’s because soda snuck him a drink before-hand (darry yelled so loud when he found out .)

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #408

I rearranged my art room today to make it a little more livable. My art room has a sink. It's super cluttered with epoxy equipment right now, but I'll get to that tomorrow. Here's how the rest of it turned out:

I'm pretty happy with how this rearrangement turned out. Everything I need is right here, at my fingertips. All my crafty things, a customizable metal shelf that I can use both as a desk and as a means of storage, my laptop, my clothes, my essentials for going out, and all that jazz.

I had to do a lot of tidying and rearranging of things to make this work. The shoulder and ribs hurt a lot less than I expected, given the number of heavy things I moved. I guess this most recent exercise K gave me is really working out. It stretches out the muscles between the ribs and the pelvis; apparently, those are extremely compressed on my right side. I can feel it when I do it; on the left side, the stretch is easy. But on the right side, everything is tight, and doing this stretch is terribly painful.

But! It wasn't as painful to do it today as it was when he gave it to me! So there's that.

...I'm trying to be upbeat and chipper. I'm not sure how well it's working, though. But I can get used to this. I'll be okay.

I made some white bean salad today!! Specifically, I like to make Great Northern Beans; they're my favorite kind of bean so far! I like to serve them chilled. This time, I drizzled them with a bit of olive oil and sprinkled it with garlic powder, salt, and parsley! It's amazingly tasty for something so simple! Check it out!!

I also made a bowl full of rice, kimchi, and pre-cooked frozen meatballs; you just thaw them out in the microwave! I got 4 different varieties a while back – Italian, Homestyle Italian (they're just bigger, I think), Angus, and Swedish. I think that of these, my favorite is Swedish!

I applied for 5 more state jobs today; I'm up to 21 applications total being out. Hopefully one of them will get back to me. Though I don't know when that'll be, if ever. I'll check the website again tomorrow; hopefully there will be more openings.

Aside from that, I mostly just worked on my weird crafty project thingy. I have 5 thingies now, and I'm working on a 6th. I guess I'll just keep going until I run out of materials. It'll be a while before I run out of materials, so I'll have something to do for a while, and this pleases me.

On Saturday, I think I might try biking to work. I know it's cold and stuff, but... I really don't wanna use gas right now, for reasons I'm not gonna explain here. Besides, it'll be a good workout for my legs; goodness knows they could use it.

Not sure what else to write today. Just taking things one step at a time, at least for now, I guess.

...And what are you up to? I heard through the grapevine that you, for whatever reason, have an animation in which you give a young chocobo some nice scritches. I was delighted by this; I'm hoping this bodes well for the kinds of choices you'll make in the final part of your remade story. I know that maybe it's just wishful thinking. Still, I... I hope you'll make good choices. I don't want to lose another pillar around which I've built my life.

Hey what grades do the main crew of Abbott Elementary teachers teach?

I always thought it was Janine = 1st, Gregory = 2nd, Barbra = Kinder (or Pre-K), Melissa = 3rd (and that one time she had 3rd and 2nd I believe?), and Jacob = 5th (or 6th) grade.

But the latest episodes are either inconsistent, I missed something, or I was always wrong. They make it seem like Janine has been teaching this (seemingly new) grade for a while- a grade that seems not to have any sacred meaning for a rug and one that is comparable to Melissa’s class. Then Jacob is given 2 grade names in 2 separate and consecutive episodes that don’t seem under the “elementary” umbrella (7th and 8th).

okay heres the course of my full thoughts on the natvan friendship.

lets start with elementary. i dont think either of them were sent to pre-k or daycare. they were less socialized as kids than some of their peers (def not all. they arent the only lower class families in wiskayok.) i think they were buddies as kids, and played at recces and stuff.

most kids didnt wanna play w nat bc her clothes didnt smell very good and found her kind of offputting bc she was pretty quiet (the way children of abusive or neglectful parents often are). i think by the time 2nd/3rd grade rolled around most kids kinda picked up on the judgement from their own parents, which carries over for kids in their own interactions.

i think it was kinda similar for van. she wore the same striped shirt and khaki shorts almost everyday and her hair used to be realllly long as a kid bc her mom didnt get it cut often. kids found her long har cool at first and called her rapunzel, but got over it pretty quick when they realized van didnt like people braiding it and putting flowers in her hair. she was friendlier tho, and it took her a little longer than natalie to realize why she was treated differently. basically, van got used to hearing 'no' when she asked if people wanted to play with her or be her friend, but she didnt stop asking, whereas natalie stopped very quickly as she was often avoided.

van and nat became friends cus they were two of the only kids who consistently played with each other and would sit next to one another in circles and stuff. they ate lunch together, and that dynamic carried over to middle school.

when midle school starts, van gets a hair cut, and she and nat both wear fresher clothes and what not, but their reputations are already solidified. some people are nicer to van bc shes so social and makes some more friends. its not like she and nat have a friendship much deeper than elementary school bonds, but they still sit together at lunch and in classes they have.

idk when i think taissa comes into the picture, but ive always imagined taivan having a friends to pining to lovers relationship. so i think some point, maybe 6th or 7th grade, van meets tai at soccer club and is smitten. tai lowkey is too and van feels really welcomed by her and they connect. van start spending a little less time w nat bc she wants to be w tai. its not intentional at all. yk how first crushes are, especially a sapphic one, AND in middle school.

seats are assigned after first pickings so van and nat still sit together and have a decent rapport, but nat does have her lil 12 y/o feelings kind of hurt by van spending more time w tai than her. shes always one to pretend she doesnt care tho, so as time goes on, nat never speaks up about it. she kinda lets her and van remain how they are, and allows the distance to grow.

van never stops caring about nat, its just that shes a little older now and is becoming friends with new people. in her mind, nats always her buddy, she just has different relationships now.

nat becomes kinda friends w kevyn around this time. he wasnt a dick to her in elementary, and played w her sometimes when van wasnt around. they get closer, and his friends are cool w nat too. nat and van are still absolutely cool w each other, they just dont talk as much.

all this establishes itself more in 8th grade, but as van is a little older and reflects a bit, she decides to reach out to nat more. shits not great at home for nat, shes more jaded, but she considers it when van asks her to join the soccer club. kevyn convinces her to do it, so she does. van is hyped, other girls in the club arent so much. nat sticks with it despite that because she does actually really enjoy playing soccer, but it takes some more convincing to get her to try out for the actual team once they enter high school. van says she'll probably be the only one from the club who drops soccer, and itll show that they all got to her. it resonates w nat and she decided to join the team and try not to let it seem like she gave a shit.

nat ends up kinda getting along w some members and being on the team gets a bit easier. vans enthusiasm made more people less openly cruel to her. lottie never talked shit about anyone who didnt deserve it, and they ended up getting along in a way they didnt expect (ill be making a detailed post at some point about my insight on lottienats friendship). shauna and nat vibe when jackie isnt around, and sometimes taissa takes it easier on her cus she respects that van liked nat as kids. still, nats not necessarily close to any of them, but she does have some people on the team shes cool w.

around the middle of sophmore year, tai and van realize they feel the same and date on the dl. again, high school relationship, its pretty immature, so van feels like it isnt her place anymore to tell taissa to stop when shes rude to nat (i have the 'bong to hit/dick to suck' scene in mind as van was the only one to not react). obviously she says something when other people cross a line, as seen w travis. nat doesnt mind, she kinda would rather taissa be honest than pretend to like her. it doesnt rly affect anything in the team, nat didnt talk to any of them much more than necessary from the get go. shes less hurt about it than she was in middle school, and shes already picked up on taivan being a thing, so shes chill. shes gotten closer w kevyn so she feels pretty good about things.

at the beginning of junior year, (maybe the end of sophmore year idk i cant decide,) the incident with natalies dad happens. nat doesnt show for a couple weeks, and van tries to ask kevyn what happened. no one really knows the full story, but lots of rumors go around once the news of mr. scatorccio dying by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head got out. van didnt rly pay mind to them, and became more outspoken w tai about not contributing to rumors.

when nat returns, she doesnt go to soccer for a bit. she and kevyn mostly skip, and kevyns friend started bringing them weed to help nat out. she smoked a bit before, but it becomes a regular thing. same w drinking. she had access to it as a kid and would take swigs. her father sometimes even let her get tipsy when she was a preteen. but after his death, it becomes more of a crutch. all his alcohol is lying around, so she provides the drinks to their skip sessions.

when nat decides its time to act unbothered, she comes back to soccer. shes still, understandably, traumatized, so she zones out even more and talks even less. but shes there. everyone is either extra nice to her, or gives her total space. van just tries to be casual, which nat appreciates.

by the half way point of junior year, nats pretty heavily into drinking and weed and psychedelics, and its at this point it affects her day to day. skipping is a daily occurance, she barely keeps her grades up to stay on the team. van tries to let nat know shes still a friend, but it upsets her to see nat showing up drunk. it reminds her of her mother. and van.. just cant deal w that. shes struggled so much with having a neglectful parent due to alcohol. shes tried her hardest to not let the world get to her like her mother did, and avoid falling down that path. watching it happen to natalie is just disappointing for van.

this isnt to say van doesnt drink and smoke. she def does, she likes to let loose, but i see her as a strictly social smoker/drinker. nat obviously has a diff relationship with drugs and alcohol, and the her reliance is something that rubs van the wrong way for personal, but also caring reasons.

its a combination of nat distancing herself naturally bc of her subtance abuse, and van realizing she cant fix it + having her opinion on nat change a bit. she cares for natalie. she has for a long time, even if its not the same as with more day to day friends. but she decides that theyre older now, nats made her choices and van doesnt agree with them, as much as she understands them.

theyre friendly. but vans self preserverance, tai supporting her protecting herself, and her sometimes seeing nat ending up like her own mother, the distance grows on both sides. nat doesnt even really pick up on it. shes pretty clouded for the last two years of high school, and she doesnt care. she has her vices and she has kevyn and she convinces herself thats enough.

i think maybe a part of nat is bitter that she feels things worked out so much better for van than her. its not entirely true but i mean.. kinda? at the same time, i think nat just sort of feels that way towards everyone and the entire universe.

its just all a cycle imo. they got close bc of their similar family dynamics, but those dynamics are what made them into the separate people they are. theyre no longer aligned bc they took different paths based on the cards they were dealt. nat became her parents in a way, and van did her best not to, and to not let anymore of that into her life.

then the crash happens, and none of it matters anymore.

tldr; van and nat got along as little kids bc they were treated differently. their friendship never developed past elementary school level bonds, and they drifted apart naturally due to different social circles and life choices
