Mais si, mais non // The Questions Surrounding the Second Coming
youtube
In one corner, there's the part where Leo's story at FC Barcelona is already written. In the other, there's a final chapter that didn't get written. Team sports is littered with a host of stars who returned home to retire. From Dwayne Wade to Gigi Buffon, there's a romanticism to going back to where it all started. But what's left to do for Leo Messi at FC Barcelona? For the diminutive Argentine, it might be more than just tying a bow on his decorated career. His return will unlikely see Barca return to the days of European supremacy. Maybe they can squeeze another La Liga title? Maybe two. As for European Cups? Even with a stacked roster, nothing is guaranteed. Although invested in youth, Barca's current squad seems held together with spit and chewing gum. And like other stars in the latter stages of their career, will he be happy being carried along for a ride? But maybe everyone's reading it all wrong.
Perhaps Leo Messi's potential return isn't entirely about football. What if it's about having a final signature moment? A moment like passing the torch to his successor like Ronaldinho Gaucho did to him in the video above? Such a moment seems unlikely and even contrived should it happen during his mariage de complaisance with Paris Saint Germain.
Alternatively, could a run at the FC Barcelona presidency be on the cards? While not as transparent as Gerard Pique's ambitions, could Messi's future lie upstairs? While moves to Miami and back to Argentina have been touted, a move back to his adopted and spiritual home could likely be a move for both his business, family, and what's left of his stellar career.

PRIDE MONTH QUOTE 14
Tumblr media
Wednesday, June 26, 2024
“The greatest fear of the American male is that he will be homosexual. Beginning with the stern warnings he receives as a young boy about overly friendly men in public parks, through the adolescent shaming prompted by the slightest hint of effeminacy, to the suspicion provoked by an interest in artistic pursuits, he is conditioned to believe that homosexuality is incompatible with manhood. From his family to his friends, in his church and at his workplace, from the realm of the everyday experience to the popular culture surrounding him, the message is unambiguous that there is absolutely nothing worse in the world than to be a sissy, a faggot, a queer.” – James Kirchick, Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington

Sonny Rollins // Bridging the Gap
youtube
It wasn't until the film 21 Bridges was released that I realised that there are that many bridges linking Manhattan to NYC's outer boroughs. For music fans, Sonny Rollins is a bridge himself. At 92 years old, he's the bridge that links the old with the new. After all, who else alive can say they've recorded with Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, and The Rolling Stones?
Of the aforementioned bridges, there's one that has a special link with Sonny Rollins. The Williamsburg Bridge connects Manhattan's Lower East Side with Brooklyn and was a place of refuge for a young Rollins at the beginning of 1959. Already a star on New York's prolific jazz scene, and despite recording with the likes of John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, Rollins was burnt out. Frustrated with his playing and career trajectory, he went into hibernation for months.
This forced time out meant no recordings and no live shows which are the bread and butter for any musician. It was during this period that Rollins would head to the Williamsburg Bridge to practice, meditate and be alone with his thoughts and his horn. What followed were legendary double-digit hour sessions that would take his sabbatical deep into 1961. Eventually, a refreshed, more spiritually aware Rollins would emerge with a newfound musical direction. And subsequently, an album paying homage to his time away from "the jazz life", would be recorded. The Bridge bridged the gap between the excesses of being a musician in 1950s New York and finding serenity thereafter.
A piece of trivia - What do Ed Koch, Robert F. Kennedy, and Alexander Hamilton all have in common? They all have bridges in NYC named in their honour. It's probably time for Sonny Rollins to join that list and I just so happen to have one mind.
