Jess Watches // Fri 10 May // Day 226 Synopses & Favourite Scenes & Poll
Sugar (with mum) 1x07 The Friends You Keep
Sugar's fears for the safety of his friends lead him to a clandestine gathering where he learns a dangerous secret -- and the truth about Olivia.
Do we know anything about the senator's family? If they're blackmailing Sugar and co. shouldn't they have been the main focus and not the Seigels? A prolonged advertisement for the car being the most effective storyline atm lol. Beam me up, Sugar.
Acapulco (with mum) 3x03 Dead Man's Party
Don Pablo comes to Maximo with a task that puts his training to the test; Julia faces a tough decision over whether to be honest with Nora.
Another episode today about blackmail. What are the TV gods trying to tell me?? Don Pablo was so casual about the seedier side of hotel management. Not the sweet older man I thought he was but much more in line with the absentee father we know he used to be. It's no wonder Maximo loses his better qualities working under him at Las Colinas.
Reginald the Vampire 2x01 The Pompatus of Love
Reginald goes big or goes home; Maurice is the new Deacon; Nikki is a Killer Diller.
Ashley, next episode probably: I sword fight my ex in a Slushie Shack parking lot. 🔥
Extraordinary Attorney Woo Ep 1
On her first day at a new job, Woo Young Woo meets an ally, a skeptic and an old acquaintance. She takes on an assault case involving an elderly couple.
I wasn't too optimistic about the show not infantilizing her as it started with her when she was a kid. But it soon proved me wrong 🙏. And ofc there was ableism, as expected, but some of it was called out, owned up to, and apologized for. I had a whale of a time tbh.🐳

On average, what is the total MONTHLY amount that you spend on dining out*?
*(This doesn't only count going out to restaurants, but also stuff like picking up fast food to bring home, getting a coffee on the way to work, getting a premade sandwich from a grocery store deli during lunch, buying a quick snack from a convenience store or food cart whilst walking somewhere, ordering a pizza or any other food to be delivered to your home, etc.)
*(If you often dine out in groups/as a household: calculate and divide the costs so that you get a Per Person average. This is for YOU individually, NOT the total household/group costs)
(I'm sure polls similar to this have been made before (very common topic), I just haven't personally seen one that I can remember, so, I was curious to do my own! I was discussing this with a group of people today and it was very interesting to see how widely the number varied between individuals. :0c )
(Reblog for bigger sample size if you can, and feel free to explain your answer in tags if there's anything extra to add!)
#polls#tumblr polls#I'm mostly in the 0/1 - 25$ category. Maybe the rare month is a bit over $25 if there's something specific going on like birthday.#Which I'm NEVER eating in an actual restaurant (erm... covid... plus I just hate restaurant environments. i would rather pickup#the food and bring it home to a peaceful quiet environment that I control lol). But more typically like stopping by a grocery store deli#section or something. I don't have coffee that much. And I can't eat fast food much due to my health issues/diet restriction stuff#so if I'm out like coming back from an appointment and I start feeling really sick and weak. I know that a hamburger will just#blow up my system and cause nausea or something. So I try to pick the breadiest most#neutral looking turkey sandwich at the safeway deli to eat during the hour ride home or whatever lol#I actually kind of wish I could do stuff like get food more often vecause it would take the burden of cooking everything off of me#but.. alas... Money... and Health Things... T o T#I still wouldn't do it ALL the time but like... once a week instead of once a month or something.. or maybe turning into a coffee#person.. I do love drinks A LOT .. i am a drink person who will have 5 different drinks sipping on at all times#But i just have to make them all myself mostly lol#And I cant really have too much coffee since it will make me sick. so like.. teas and juice mostly#When I inevitably become a millionaire by never using social media never networking and only finishing one#sculpture every 5 months which I dont even post about or sell - then I shall... get more drinks..#I will somehow wean my body onto coffee and drink one a day solely for the ritual of it#Though even then... I would still probably just like.. buy the mateirals to make it at home or something#Like if you had a million dollars you could just buy a kitchen grade ice cream machine and other stuff to make your own milkshakes and#coffees and smoothies and bubble teas. Genuinely I think even if I were a BILLIONAIRE I would still look at playing likr $8 for a single#coffee and go .. uh.... I could just buy the equipment to make this and then save that money. PLUS. its in my house now so no need to#have to leave. I can make my own drinks in the comfort of home. .. ideal..#Like no matter how rich I ever got I would still have the lingering scroogey stinginess. like i am NOT paying for that. I will jus#make it myself. Especially if it was an Everyday thing. Anythign thats part of my routine I try to optimize and make as efficient as#possible... ANYWAY.. In an IDEAL world I would get treats. but probably not that much. as on a daily basis it would start to get#to me and I would just save up to buy kitchen machinery if I was rich lol

How many physical books do you own?
In honour of the people who misread my last poll question about the number of standalone volumes by a single author... How large is your collection of books?
For the purposes of this poll, it would only be books that would be a pain in the ass if you were to move (ie no e-books, but ttrpgs, cookbooks, art books, etc count)
#books#book poll#poll#bookblr#booklr#I was profoundly conflicted on the number distribution btw and have no idea if it will work at all so please be kind lmao#mine is 103#though thats only the books that live with me and not with my parents... but the collection at my parents is from when i was a kid/undergra#so they won't all eventually make it into my collection. probably would add about 70 books though

2024 US Election June Update
Hello, I'm a Communist. I prefer Dr. Cornel West as he's the best candidate for the 2024 US election.
Dr. Jill Stein is not only an excellent backup, but also has a significantly better chance of winning the election.
Here's some data:
270toWin demonstrates that current polls show 235 Republican electoral votes, 226 Democrat, and 77 toss-up. Biden will lose the election; Trump is very likely to win.
Dr. Jill Stein has ballot access in 22 states + Washington, D.C..
If only Green Party and the direct specifically Jill Stein ballot access states win Green with no further ballot access, the results are: 279 Green, 139 Democrat, 101 Republican, 19 toss-up. Green wins by a landslide.
If only Green Party wins in Democrat, toss-up, and 2020 US election swing states (minus Florida due to a right-wing wave), the results are: Texas is a critical state for the election, 202 Green, 139 Democrat, 176 Republican, 19 toss-up. Green wins.
It is highly unlikely that Dr. Cornel West will gain enough ballot access, which is unfortunate, but Dr. Jill Stein currently already has enough ballot access to win the election.
Don't vote for genocide.
Vote for Jill Stein. Convert your friends.
Biden literally does not have enough support to win the election.
Vote for fascism and you are a fascist.
Vote Green.

So, the Des Moines Register, a big newspaper in Iowa, pays polling company every election to poll specifically Iowans. This polling company polls just Iowa, not just for the newspaper but in general. They're supposedly the gold standard in polling. In the last twelve years, the most their poll has been off was five percentage points in the 2018 governor's race - and other than that it's all under 3 percentage points.
Their latest poll has come out.
It has Harris beating Trump in Iowa by three percentage points. For context, Trump beat Biden by about eight percentage points in Iowa in 2020 (Selzer predicted a seven point margin).
If you plug that into the fivethirtyeight election map, the one that lets you pick which way you think a state is going to go and then incorporates that assumption into how it models the other states, it says that if Iowa goes blue, other things that are likely
Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia go from 'lean R' to 'likely D'
Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nevada go from 'toss up' to 'solid D'
Florida, Texas, and Ohio go from 'Likely R' to 'Lean D'
Alaska goes from 'Likely R' to 'toss-up'
Overall, the map goes from saying 226 likely/solid D electors, 50 toss ups, and 43 electors leaning R to saying 407 likely/solid/leaning D electors and 3 toss-ups
The last time a president won with over 400 electoral votes was thirty-six years ago in 1988
If there was a D presidential victory margin that wide it would likely put the Senate back in play, particularly vis-a-vis Ted Cruz and Rick Scott in Texas and Florida
I'm going to assume that this poll is somehow an inaccurate outlier despite the widely respected gold standard pollster because I don't think my brain is capable of processing that level of hope at this point

Ben Blanchet at HuffPost:
Joe Biden has reportedly shared “in recent days” that he could’ve defeated Donald Trump despite concerns over the president’s age, his mental acuity and cratering support with Democrats that caused him to drop out of the 2024 race. Biden, along with some aides, believe he shouldn’t have stepped aside in July, a decision that paved the way for Vice President Kamala Harris’ failed presidential bid, The Washington Post reported Saturday citing sources close to the White House. The news comes in the face of Biden’s deep unpopularity among Americans as the president hit his lowest approval rating since moving into the White House in 2021, according to a survey taken by the Marquette Law School Poll earlier this month.
His approval rating currently sits at 37.4%, a number that’s 5% lower than what Trump had at the same point of his first term, according to polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight. The Biden campaign reportedly had a grim election picture against Trump as internal polling showed the now-president-elect taking home 400 electoral votes in November, according to “Pod Save America” host Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Barack Obama.
Following the president’s disastrous debate performance against Trump in June, the Biden camp was privately “shivving” Harris to reporters and claiming that the vice president couldn’t win as he was the “strongest” candidate, Favreau said in a post-election podcast episode last month. Biden aides said the president “has been careful not to place blame on Harris or her campaign” over the loss, according to the Post. Harris — who initially appeared to outpace Trump in the fundraising department and polled slightly better than Biden in the days after launching her 2024 bid — would go on to lose every swing state and the popular vote to her opponent, who secured 312 electoral votes compared to her 226 electoral votes.
President Joe Biden (D) is delulu enough to believe that he could’ve beaten Donald Trump this election, as The Washington Post reported that he had regrets over his decision to drop out of the race in mid-July 2024.
If Biden had still been the nominee, the Democrats would have performed MUCH worse, as they would lose at least 4-6 more Senate seats, 15-30 more House seats, and even more states, such as New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nebraska’s 2nd CD, and Virginia. Colorado, Illinois, Rhode Island, and New York could have also been in grave danger. For this reason, thank God that Kamala Harris was our nominee, as she kept the House losses to a minimum and setting up a good chance to flip in 2026, the Senate somewhat manageable for future elections, and the party being still relevant.

By John Gruber
Hunter S. Thompson, writing in September 1972, a little over month ahead of Nixon’s landslide reelection:
The polls also indicate that Nixon will get a comfortable majority of the Youth Vote. And that he might carry all fifty states.
Well … maybe so. This may be the year when we finally come face to face with ourselves: finally just lay back and say it — that we are really just a nation of 220 million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.
The tragedy of all this is that George McGovern, for all his mistakes and all his imprecise talk about “new politics” and “honesty in government”, is one of the few men who’ve run for President of the United States in this century who really understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon.
McGovern made some stupid mistakes, but in context they seem almost frivolous compared to the things Richard Nixon does every day of his life, on purpose, as a matter of policy and a perfect expression of everything he stands for.
Jesus! Where will it end?
If every damn word of that doesn’t ring true to you today, you’re deaf. I have quoted this same passage once before, in the opposite context (or at least the opposite mood) — the day after Barack Obama’s election victory 16 years ago. I wrote then:
It ends here, today.
I love this country.
That first sentence sounds hopelessly naive today. I don’t blame my younger self for having written it though. That 2008 Obama win was euphoric. It remains our nation’s high-water mark. Until that day there remained large swaths not merely of the American electorate as a whole, but of Democrats and liberals, who believed they’d never live to see this nation elect a black man as president. But that happened. Barack Obama was elected, then reelected four years later, and left office and remains today a popular leader. Obama’s win in 2008 (365-173) was far larger than Trump’s win this year (312-226), measured either by Electoral College results or the popular vote. Obama’s 2012 reelection against Mitt Romney was a slightly larger win than Trump’s now (332-206).
The lesson is that it never ends.
But my god, look at the results Thompson was writing about in 1972. Richard Nixon won the Electoral College 520-17 and the popular vote by 23 percent. He won 49 of 50 states. “Jesus!” indeed. This now is not that. This is bad and dangerous and dark, but while Trump’s win was brutally clear, it was still a very close, deeply divided election. Barack Obama ran in 2008 opposing gay marriage. The Democrat. That was only 16 years ago. The iPhone was already out. Progress hasn’t stopped, but it’s never easy, and never without backlash.
It doesn’t end. Keep the faith.

In recent days, the Republican nominee for president of the United States has driven around in circles in a garbage truck, pretended to work at McDonald’s and presided over a rally in which Puerto Rico was called a floating island of garbage.
Outrageous, of course – but then it got worse. On Thursday, talking on stage with Tucker Carlson in Arizona, Donald Trump went after the former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, who opposes his re-election and has campaigned with Kamala Harris: “Let’s put her with a rifle with nine barrels shooting at her. Let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.”
Cheney characterized this as “how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death.”
Meanwhile, in the final days of her campaign, Harris continued to call for unity, progress and inclusion. In a sweeping speech at the Ellipse in Washington DC before a huge and appreciative crowd, she warned of Americans losing their fundamental freedoms if they submit to the will of the “petty tyrant” mentioned above.
With only a few days left of this exhausting campaign, the candidates’ closing statements could not be more different. There’s violent, hateful rhetoric and threats of retribution from one side. There’s inclusion, sanity and promises of good will on the other. Autocracy on the one hand; the preservation of democracy on the other.
And yet, according to the polls – if you choose to believe them – the presidential race is tied.
The oft-cited Cook Political Report issued its final projection: “Too close to call. Harris heads into Election Day with 226 electoral votes in Likely or Solid Democrat, and Trump with 219 in Likely or Solid Republican. Seven states and their 93 electoral votes are too close to call, with neither candidate having a lead larger than one or two points in any state.”
You’d think, then, that these final days would matter. That mysteriously undecided voters would finally figure things out, or that some last-minute political bomb would explode – like the Access Hollywood audio followed by the FBI’s reopening of the Hillary Clinton emails investigation in the last days of the 2016 campaign.
But no one should have bothered to wait.
At this point, nothing can make a bit of difference. For some observers, this is not a new realization.
“That’s where I’ve been ever since 2015: feeling like language is pointless,” wrote David Roberts, formerly of Vox, who writes the Volts newsletter about clean energy and politics. “Like the reality I inhabit is so far from the reality Trump supporters inhabit that discourse between us is impossible or at least futile. The divide is unbridgeable.”
And this is the background as voters make their way to their election sites, with many of them voting early to avoid chaos or danger on Tuesday. Each side is claiming the early voters as theirs.
And right to the end, the most powerful of the mainstream press keeps trying to equalize the unequal.
Both the New York Times and the Washington Post led their websites with Joe Biden’s verbal fumble in which he may, or may not, have referred to Trump supporters as garbage.
And both placed that story above the fold on Thursday’s print front pages. The Post’s hefty two-column headline dominated the lead position: “Biden’s ‘garbage’ remark has Harris seeking distance.” The Times struck the same note: “Biden Misstep Delivers Grist to Harris Foes.”
The headlines themselves demonstrate the flawed news judgment. “The news hook is literally that it provided ‘grist’ to Republicans,” and this in effect “outsources the judgment about the newsworthiness of the event to bad faith actors,” wrote Greg Sargent of the New Republic.
Sure, Biden’s untimely gaffe is a legitimate story. But this important? Certainly not when you consider how the Times handled its own scoop – that the former Trump chief of staff John Kelly, a retired Marine general, believes Trump is a fascist and a danger to the nation. That one went to page A12.
Meanwhile, Trump drives around in a garbage truck, issues death threats and says he’s planning to protect American women from their own healthcare decisions “whether the women like it or not”.
No October surprise could have superseded the media’s reflexive false equivalence or the cult-like adoration of Trump’s followers.
But, as my father used to urge, keep the faith.
If there’s any justice or decency left – and I trust there is – Harris will leave the pollsters and the pundits scratching their heads after a November surprise. Her historic victory.
