If you're a veteran and hate the current push towards authoritarianism and anti-immigrant / anti-minority fervor taking place, please take a look at this group and consider participating. We cannot assume nothing bad will happen and sit on our hands doing nothing. The best defense is a strong offense. Every one of us (excluding native-Americans) descends from immigrants (voluntary or involuntary), many of whom underwent pushback from those who preceded them. Yet they stood strong and we are here because of them. Let's help prove that they were right to stay in place.

Arpa Keun: McCarthyism in America
. Source:The New Democrat  McCarthyism in America deserves at least one long blog and probably several of them. But to give you a summary of McCarthyism. It was about one U.S. Senator from Wisconsin Joe McCarthy who was anti-communist to the point that he didn’t believe democracy or liberal democracy could survive in the United States with any link to it. Especially inside the United States…

I live in one of the sketchier neighborhoods of my big city's downtown area. Like, "I go multiple homeless encampments just walking to the grocery store" sketchy. I have been verbally accosted by people who were definitely not right in the head - maybe mental illness, maybe drugs, maybe they were just a jackass who knew they could get out of there before a cop could show, I don't know. I don't care. I'm short, weigh like a hundred pounds, and I'm a cis woman (and look it). There have absolutely been situations where I felt anxious or uncomfortable, but even when walking down the street in the middle of the night, I don't I've ever felt a fraction as scared for my life as suburban white women sitting in their own homes seem to. I also routinely have people telling me to never walk in my own neighborhood at night, or calling me brave for living here without a car, or insisting they drive me back home because they don't want me walking around in the dark. But honestly, staying safe is not nearly as difficult as some people make it out to be. +90% of it is just basic situational awareness. I've said before that privilege is sometimes best understood as the luxury to not know or comprehend things, and I find myself wondering how many wealthy or comfortable white women are reacting to losing the privilege of walking down the street without paying any attention to their surroundings. This is NOT to victim-blame people who actually have been assaulted on the street, nor to dismiss the very real threats some people face when walking around alone at night. This is just to highlight that while there are very real risks in the world, many of these risks are vastly overstated and overblown for political or sociopolitical purposes. (And often downplay far realer threats. A lifetime of walking around Los Angeles on my own, and the only times I genuinely did fear for my safety were when I was approached by middle- and upper-class white men, especially in their cars. I was WAY more scared by a middle-aged white guy in his bougie sports car asking me for my number even after I told him I was only 15 than I ever was by any of the homeless black men screaming at me from across the street or on the bus.)

I must not watch election coverage. Election coverage is the mind-killer. Election coverage is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will cast my vote. I will permit the result to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the election coverage has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

One of the most bizarre feelings imo is finding out about a prejudice you didn't know existed
Like. I only recently found out that there's areas IN MY OWN COUNTRY where discrimination against Italian people is a genuine problem
Like
I definitely know WHY I always assumed Racism was a prejudice more dependant on differences in skin colour but holy shit damn yeah okay so there's also ultraviolet racism too huh, we're all just drinking the shitty bitch water then

TBH in the original Hellblazer it's not that all of John's friends died, lot of them did, for various reasons, (plus there's the Newcastle incident and all that personal trauma), but lot of the time the old friends John reconnects with have either abandoned their anarchist/leftist principles or revealed they never had any particularly solid politics and John is like 'wow this sucks we're all going to die' and then wanders around for a bit depressed until satan tries to kill him again

Most of new 52/DC stuff with John just refuses to interact with the political elements this way. so it is what it is and can't even really answer the question why john is depressed

As Election Day begins in the U.S. there will be a huge rush of anxiety and emotions for many of us. This is an incredibly difficult time to be hopeful and resilient, but we must. Please remember that the polls will not accurately represent the outcome until well after polls close, and it could take days before the race can truly and unequivocally be called. Instead of checking every ten minutes to see who is ahead, or feeling trapped by two bad outcomes, today I urge you to care for yourself and your community. This election will matter, but what will matter the most is the human resiliency and compassion that overcomes the greatest of obstacles. Think today about how you can strengthen your heart or honor and fight for those who need it most. Election Day will pass, and whatever the outcome we will continue to live in a world filled with people of kind hearts and hard working hands. Don’t fall for despair, prepare to roll up your sleeves and do what you can. All is easier said than done, so start by taking a deep breath, think of something you love, and carry on on step at a time.

to anyone who is still considering not voting at all or voting third party in November, i need you to make the time to sit and watch this video
i need to you to really seriously weight the cost of choosing to note vote in protest, and the potential (incredibly scary and dangerous) impacts of that choice on marginalized folks, including immigrants and trans people
please

I haven't been interested in how the pantheon of gods in recent Dr Who have been done, but I do like that Sutekh explicitly kept his Osirian origin story, and he became the god of death due to all his vortex exposure/tardis-jacking/whatever. Which means the Pantheon of Discord (to use the Trickster's name for it) isn't intrinsic forces of the universe, they're powerful entities who have gained some form of connection. I think the Pantheon of Discord is just some powerful aliens' discord server.
