Fun story: I accidentally acquired self-esteem in my late 20s/early 30s, and when I did PMS depression stopped making me hate myself.
It still makes me suicidal, but now it's only because the world is an irredeemably terrible place, not bc there is anything wrong with me.
In other words, it's exactly how I feel all the time, just with the volume turned up 50-200%.
And if that rule holds true for other people, then I invite each person who experiences PMS depression as self-hatred or self-horror or self-disgust to look carefully at how they feel about themselves the other 3 weeks of the month.
Pre-menstrual depression is always depicted as like "He He! I had a box of icecream bars and cried while watching the Titanic!" But in reality, it's more like, "I'm standing the edge of an abyss. There is nothing good inside of me, I'm filled with rage and desperation."
It's crazy that being told how to deal with that is never a part of anyone's menstrual sex education.

I wish it was easy to get help with menstration but its not.
So many people who get periods are like “Ugh it sucks that having a menstrual cycle makes you almost die every month” like no that’s not normal you need to go to the doctor

can’t emphasize enough how when you grew up in a toxic environment, being in the room with someone who’s angry or frustrated - even if it has nothing to do with you - is absolutely terrifying cuz you’ve been 1000% conditioned to assume frustration = all hell is going to break lose and be aimed directly at you

The coffee I’ve made the last few days- electing to make it hot rather than over ice- has been pulling at my guts. While reading or attending to some task, I’ll smell it and the grief makes a sucking sound. It reminds me of the coffee I’d buy from the machine in the university basement- a warm, sweet comfort while I pored over my textbooks with my highlighters. I was one of the best students, one of the most eager. I aced tests and was asked by competitive classmates with knives in their eyes, “How did you do that?”
I try to remind myself that she is still there, despite how far from academia she’s been blown. Lacking purpose, other than survival, is painful and I was just about to be able to take the training wheels off and start living again (after 15 years). I had reached that level of stability. Would I have started listening to Marina and the Diamonds or M83 again? Start my aquarium hobby back up? Ponder going back to school for another degree or my master’s? Go to some writing clubs? Bake for people again? Last week’s hypomania, subsequent depression, facing abelism at work, panic attacks in the work bathroom yesterday and resulting ocular migraine told me, “No, not yet…if ever.” I squinted while I folded clothes and helped customers- I couldn’t see anything out of my right eye except a floating, scythe-shaped anomaly, the insides of it black, white, purple, flashing. How alone I felt. And scared.

If your periods/menstrual cycle correlate with
- Depressive Episodes
- Self Harm
- Suicidal Thoughts
- Severe or Increased Anxiety
- Sudden or Intense Mood Changes
Please consider asking your medical practitioner about Premenstrual dysphoric disorder. I had no idea that the emotions I was feeling were beyond the regular levels. I was always told by media that periods made you irrational, emotional, and even depressed. While it is true that many of us who menstruate will have those side effects, they should not ever be severe. If they cause you significant distress you may be struggling with something different. I found out only after my periods were stopped by testosterone that I was never supposed to suffer that much. If you may be experiencing this speak up, you aren’t alone and you have options!

average person is not that emotional before their period. PMDD georg, who has a severe mental health crisis every month, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

Seriously though, it is NOT normal to feel suicidal, ragey, depressed to the point of incapacitation, psychotic, and feeling like you have to plan your life around your menstrual cycle. Look into PMDD if you feel like your life is being seriously affected by your PMS symptoms.

Kinda niche, but I've spent the last five days feeling like I'm losing my mind so here are some PMDD memes. However bad you think it is based on these memes, it's worse.
