Invisible Forces, Visible Effects: The Power of Thoughts and Emotions
The power of words, thoughts, feelings and emotions
In our everyday lives, we often underestimate the profound impact of intangible elements—words, thoughts, feelings, and emotions—on our physical well-being. These seemingly immaterial aspects possess tangible power that shapes not only our mental state but also our bodies. Exploring this unseen force unveils a deeper understanding of how these…

Finding a soulmate is a deeply personal and subjective experience, and it can be different for everyone. While there is no foolproof method for finding a soulmate, here are five approaches you can consider:
Self-Reflection and Personal Growth: Before seeking a soulmate, it's important to have a clear understanding of yourself, your values, and your goals in life. Engage in self-reflection, explore your passions, and work on personal growth. When you know yourself well, you are more likely to attract someone who aligns with your true self.
Socialize and Expand Your Circle: Put yourself out there and engage in activities that interest you. Attend social events, join clubs, or take up new hobbies where you can meet like-minded individuals. By expanding your social circle, you increase the chances of connecting with someone who shares your interests and values.
Open Communication and Authenticity: When you meet someone new, strive for open and honest communication. Be authentic and genuine in your interactions. Share your thoughts, dreams, and vulnerabilities. This openness fosters deeper connections and allows you to find someone who appreciates you for who you truly are.
Patience and Intuition: Finding a soulmate often requires patience. Allow the relationship to unfold naturally and avoid rushing into commitments. Listen to your intuition and pay attention to how you feel when you're with someone. Trust your instincts and seek a connection that feels right and harmonious.
Compatibility and Shared Values: Look for compatibility and shared values when getting to know someone. While differences can be enriching, a strong foundation of common values can help build a lasting and fulfilling relationship. Consider qualities such as trust, respect, kindness, empathy, and shared life goals.
Remember, finding a soulmate is a journey that may take time, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Stay open-minded, enjoy the process, and focus on building a strong connection based on love, trust, and understanding.

The backlash against globalisation - Stefanie Walter (from annual review) 🤍
In recent years, the world has seen a rising backlash against globalization. This article reviews the nature, causes, and consequences of the globalization backlash. It shows that, contrary to a popular narrative, the backlash is not associated with a large swing in public opinion against globalization but is rather a result of its politicization. The increasing influence of globalization- skeptic actors has resulted in more protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist policies, some of which fundamentally threaten pillars of the contemporary international order. Both material and nonmaterial causes drive the glob- alization backlash, and these causes interact and mediate each other. The consequences are shaped by the responses of societal actors, national gov- ernments, and international policy makers. These responses can either yield to and reinforce the global backlash or push back against it. Understanding these dynamics will be an important task for future research.
The causes and consequences of urban riot and unrest - Tim Newburn (from annual review) 🤍
This review explores those varied bodies of work that have sought to un- derstand crowd behavior and violent crowd conduct in particular. Although the study of such collective conduct was once considered central to social science, this has long ceased to be the case and in many respects the study of protest and riot now receives relatively little attention, especially within criminology. In addition to offering a critical overview of work in this field, this review argues in favor of an expanded conception of its subject matter. In recent times, scholarly concern has increasingly been focused on ques- tions of etiology, i.e., asking how and why events such as riots occur, with the consequence that less attention is paid to other, arguably equally impor- tant questions, including how riots spread, how they end, and, critically, what happens in their aftermath. Accordingly, as a corrective, the review proposes a life cycle model of riots.
Parenting and it’s effects on children : reading and misreading behaviour genetics (from annual review) 🖤
There is clear evidence that parents can and do influence children. There is equally clear evidence that children’s genetic makeup affects their own behavioral characteristics, and also influences the way they are treated by their parents. Twin and adoption studies provide a sound basis for estimating the strength of genetic effects, although heritability estimates for a given trait vary widely across samples, and no one estimate can be considered definitive. This chapter argues that knowing only the strength of genetic factors, however, is not a sufficient basis for estimating environmental ones and indeed, that attempts to do so can systematically underestimate parenting effects. Children’s genetic predispositions and their parents’ childrearing regimes are seen to be closely interwoven, and the ways in which they function jointly to affect children’s development are explored.
More than a penny’s worth: left-digit bias and firm pricing- Avner Strulov-Shlain (from MorningBrew) 🤍
A penny saved. What’s the difference between $2.99 and $3.00? Basic math says one cent, but you probably perceive the difference to be about 22 cents, a new paper by a University of Chicago business school professor estimated. The research explores left digit bias—the phenomenon where consumers’ perceptions are overly influenced by the leftmost number in the price—and it brought receipts, analyzing retail scanner data on 3,500 products sold by 25 US chains. And while it might seem like every price you see ends in .99, the paper argues that retailers are leaving money on the table by underestimating this bias when setting prices.
Hi, I’m trying to change industries to my dream industry. I’m on my 30s but I couldn’t do it before because of personal reasons and taking care of family members and mental health.
My friends, some of them, think I’m wasting my time and they don’t support me and my mum is trying to let me know in a not subtle way that she’s expecting me to grow up of this idea. But I really want to go for it!
However, because all of this, I’m getting anxious that maybe it’s late, that I should have done it before, that because I don’t have experience in this industry I won’t get hired and because it’s a new industry and my city is small (not small us but small village in a country in Europe) I can’t do networking but in LinkedIn and it’s hard because I don’t know someone. And im starting to second guess myself and thinking I’m eating my time but I really hate the industry I’m working now, so I feel really stuck and I can’t move forward with the industry change because all of this. Do you have any advice? Do you think it’s late? Thank you so much <3
Hi love! I believe there are two important points to be made here.
The best time to start is years ago. The second best time to start is now. Time will continue to pass for several more decades, so consider whether you want to "what if" yourself about pursuing your dreams 20 years from now. In my opinion, it's better to go after what you want and fail fast. Living with regrets, at least for me, feels worse than pursuing something I wanted and it not unfolding as my expectations lead me to believe.
While going after what you want is important, especially with your career, you need to be practical and a little more methodical (even a bit conservative) in your approach to ensure you don't run into financial trouble. No dream is worth struggling with life-hindering debt – at least in my opinion.
With these two considerations in mind, I would consider beginning to pursue this career path as a hobby in the meantime while maintaining whatever stable employment you have at the moment. Prioritize your time engaging in this "hobby" like it's a mandatory appointment with yourself.
Consume articles, books, and podcasts. Take courses/build skills in your dream industry/role. Create a portfolio of your own spec work to demonstrate your commitment and talent within this field. Use LinkedIn/virtual conferences to network strategically. Follow people in your dream industry and key leaders. Comment/engage with their material. Send them personalized messages with praise/feedback on posts or insights they shared.
Message people attending the same conferences to connect. Set up informational interviews/coffee chats if possible (offer to pay for a virtual coffee, etc.). If there are any gig/job opportunities, share this spec work to demonstrate your skills and frame your background as a series of transferable skills.
Also, never underestimate the power of your second-degree network on LinkedIn, but mainly IRL. Let your trusted, supportive friends and acquaintances know you're interested in the field. You never know who knows someone.

I had a really tough week last week, between my neck hurting so much and just all the stress of my loan. I know I’m not the only one who thinks that if there was just a specific day or holiday that came along everything would be so much better, but the bad part of that is having to WAIT for that day and then just putting everything on that day to make you feel better. The last day I had, where I really just took a time out and relaxed from everything, was a few days after my 30th birthday. I spent the whole day just doing everything I loved that made me feel relaxed and making plans for my new year.
I didn’t want to wait for another special day or holiday to come along (like Thanksgiving, Halloween or Christmas), so I decided to make every Sunday sort of a ‘Mental Reset Day’ to unwind from the stress of the week. I started by writing myself a letter (much like I did for my birthday) and writing about how my week went, and how I could make it better the following week and just my general goals. Then at the end of the day, I wrote in my journal about moments that I really enjoyed and what my favorite part of the day was.
My favorite part was just taking the time to unwind and really focus on the things I want to do in life, like writing and exploring a career as a bookkeeper (something I’d tried to get into once before).
I really enjoyed having special time with Lucy (my cavapoo) on the bed. It was one of the rare times she behaves anymore and having her sleeping next to me on the bed really made my heart happy.
I’d say watching ‘The Finest Hours’ was one of the most meaningful moments. Not many movies can make me emotional enough to cry, but that one sure does. It didn’t mention God, but you could just see His hand at work. It was nothing short of a miracle and He put a spirit of courage and hope in those men that couldn’t be tamed. It was supposed to be an impossible situation, but He made it possible, and He brought the men and a community together, and I can’t help but wonder if that’s part of the reason God allows horrible situations to happen – not only to prove His power through ordinary people, but to draw them closer and inspire hope in others. (And yes, Chris Pine is INSANELY cute! I'm just mush when it comes to blond-haired guys, lol!)
If you don’t already have a day dedicated to just focusing on your mental health, you really ought to consider it. I’ve only had one mental health day, but I can tell it’s already making my week better and I look forward to next Sunday when I can have another.
