Came across yet another person online who insists that corporeal punishment is necessary to raise and discipline a child - and uses the argument that "gentle parenting" doesn't work because it creates brats. What they think gentle parenting is, is in fact permissive parenting - which is very much not the same.

So, allow me to share this metaphor here:

Parenting is like gardening. If you neglect your plants entirely, letting weeds grow unchecked, they’ll become overrun and struggle to thrive (permissive parenting).

But if you’re too harsh, constantly hacking at them or overwatering, you’ll damage their roots and stunt their growth (corporal punishment).

The key is balance: you support your plants with trellises or ties when they start to grow crooked (guidance), pull weeds to keep them on track (appropriate consequences), and prune gently to correct mistakes while still allowing them to grow naturally.

Discipline isn’t about force—it’s about providing structure and teaching your children how to thrive.

I just feel like, "kids are people with feelings and should be treated accordingly" and "some parents fail to supervise their children, therefore I get the existence of childfree spaces" are two statements that can coexist.

People seem to mistake gentle parenting for permissive parenting. Gentle parenting requires boundaries, but you hold them with kindness and compassion. Rather than just “do what I say because I say so” you give reasons. You explain WHY. You allow them to understand your reasoning. Just the other day I had to tell my kid no kicking the soccer ball in the house and when he got mad, I explained why I didn’t want him to: it’s not an indoor toy, he could very easily break something, there are better games to play inside, and if he still wants to kick the ball around he can take it outside. When he continued to pout I asked him “Do I ever tell you no unless there is a good reason for it?” Which he grudgingly admitted that, no, I never tell him no unless it’s justified.

But do I also have to occassionally look at him and just be like “Dude. NOT cool. At ALL. Chill.”

Yes. Absolutely.

Hold boundaries gently and firmly but also don’t be afraid to call your kid out on their crappy behavior.

I believe in gentle parenting. Unfortunately many people refuse to parent their child at all under the guise of gentle parenting. Sometimes you’ve got to look your fourth grader in the eye and say “Little dude, that was an asshole move.”

Yes, Billy getting revealed to the JL is awful when he’s a lonely, homeless pre-teen who has no friends and family and everyone hates him. I love that, it’s great.

But the humour of him either being:

An entirely healthy 14/15 year old with a loving foster family and only mild mommy/abandonment issues (plus all the other trauma from the homeless-ness and foster care but ehhh that was ages ago)

Or,

9->13 year old Billy who still shows signs of past malnutrition but is clearly healthy ATM and has a full time job. Yes he has trauma from the whole everything but he basically has a full support system and a bunch of friends. This guy has a full time job and has dinner with his sisters family on the weekend, he may or may not also own a plane

For both of them, it’s also funny if some other Shazamily members get traveled and the JL is like

“OMG do you need some help??? Can we foster you? Do you want some food???”

And there all like?

“Noo? My mum needs me home by 5 can we wrap this up?”

Just, them being in a healthy situation where the JL legally cannot stop any of them from being hero’s because they have their parents permission or literally have a Job and are their own legal guardian

On a sorta related note, the og Shazamily (Billy, Mary, Freddie) get revealed and it’s these two clearly homeless kids- plus Mary? Who is perfectly healthy and wearing brand new clothes?

They try and parent Billy or Freddie and Mary is just in the corner shaking her head, telling them that “We’ve tried, they won’t budge”

Thinking about teenage Harry severitus shenanigans. Harry getting fed up with his hair one random night in the summer and taking some kitchen scissors to just hack away at it.

Severus shows up 20 minutes later, having woken up from the bright light of the bathroom, the sounds of cutting and soft grumbling of Harry trying to get his hair right.

Halfway through Harry cutting his hair, he also decided to dye it, so he just has a bowl of developer, bleach and dye on the bathroom counter.

They stare at one another blankly.

“do you need some assistance?” Severus asked far too amused for a man who was woken up this late at night.

Harry, whose given himself haircuts since that one time with Aunt Petunia, “With this no? Maybe the hair dye- I haven’t decided which color yet.”

Of course he’s a little worried that he’s stepped over some sort of line. He’s unsure if he’s cutting his hair too short, or maybe dying his hair unnatural colors isn’t allowed in this house (similar to the Dursleys), but once Severus starts helping him with the process, all the tension drains away.

By the time they finish it’s early morning. They stayed up together talking while they waited for his hair to set.

When Harry looks in the mirror he feels like himself, less of a copy of his father, he kinda hopes Severus sees that too. While they had definitely worked through a lot of their previous experiences, he always thought at the back of his mind that Sev still sees him as his father.

He’s never had the chance to be this carefree in his expression, always worried about the Dursleys, the public or his friends. It’s freeing.

i'm not blaming anyone because there's literally no way you could know but whenever people say "i'm shocked you aren't already a fan of/aware of this pop culture thing" it always makes me a bit sad because. yeah i guess i probably would have been if i'd been allowed to have interests and casual hobbies that weren't constantly scrutinized and only deemed acceptable if they contributed towards my future academic development as a kid. maybe if i'd been allowed to use a computer or phone without my parents constantly breathing down my neck about what i was using them for and punishing me and further restricting my access to the internet if they caught me seeking out any kind of social or recreational interaction there that wasn't pre-approved and regularly checked to ensure i wasn't saying or doing anything that didn't suit their traditional conservative nuclear family sensibilities (or just, like, having fun in a way they couldn't understand tbh). maybe i would have been able to just like. enjoy things. maybe i would have had friends.

CC creators not wanting conversions

Okay so I'm hearing this is going on lately and I just want to say something about it cause it's ridiculous bullshit. When the sims 4 first came out and there was no cc for it, you know what the first thing sims 4 creators did? They converted cc from the sims 3 over to the sims 4 and a lot of it was Newseasims hairs! Did most of you ask Newseasims if you could convert the hairs over to sims 4 or did you just do it anyway? I bet you just did it anyway. The point is converting items from sims 3, 2, or 4 takes nothing from you, it's still available for whatever game it was created for it and it' still within the sims. This is in the EA Policy, we don't have to ask you for permission to convert, reupload, share, change, remodel etc. so sims 4 creators who keep harassing people about conversions or shared cc need to stop. Unless you own the sims, no one has to ask you permission for anything involving this game and that includes converting/sharing content.

If you want to have full rights to your content, then by all means go over to second life where you have full control over who uploads or shares. I'm 31 years damn old, DO NOT message me about cc being converted, cause your ass is going to get ignored or it's just going to make me convert more of your content out of pettiness. Most of you still don't follow the 2 to 3 week rule for release on your content, I know when half of your shit is from second life or downloaded off some 3d site and put behind paywall. So please don't even bother. You guys take this shit way to seriously and it's annoying. it's a bunch of 1s and 0s and you're freaking out cause someone converted some pants over to sims 3..get real. Anyway the one thing I will still continue to do is give credit and never place behind a paywall...that's it. That's all you're getting from me..anyway good talk. So guys keep sharing and converting if that's what you want to do, don't let people bully you over a game.
