Beth hadn’t intended to really make much ado about her birthday this year. However, she was absolutely clued in to the fact that something was happening when Andy insisted in ushering her out of the door as soon as she was showered, dressed, more-or-less awake. A fact further confirmed when she caught the sometimes oppressive silence as Jay and Andy traded nonchalant glances while getting breakfast. Not one to spoil a mood, she let her brother guide her along and keep her out for most of the day. The party went off without a hitch, fun and joy was had with her closest friends, and Cory’s efforts were exquisite. She loved every bit of it and maybe had more of the shave ice than she might normally consume. She was grateful for the bridge of gifts between dinner and cake, which itself was the best. She still has no understanding how anyone makes graham cracker sand. It isn’t long before she gets to Cory’s gift, and she begins looking through the photos with curiosity and glee. She laughs. “I do have plenny vacation time save up.” A glance at Andy, at Jay, at Cory herself. “We’re not really takin’ time off from work types, are we? But au rite. So we lookin’ a’ Hawai’i, yeah? I can work wi’ dat.”

“Oh! I know dese guys. Well, by reputation, if not personally. Dey do amazin’ work.” The idea of a new board gleams in her eyes and for once Andy doesn’t complain about the five that already adorn the walls, interrupting his preferred decor. In her mind, she can already see the glossy wood body, more than likely a short-board designed for manoeuvrability and speed... “Yeah, yeah dis is really sweet and kind of you.” Beth, with the soul of a raccoon in the moment, finds the earrings and immediately puts them on and gives them a little shake, sending the sharks swimming against the currents of her hair. “Pure aloha, dese.” “I mean, if you nevah been, you should stay at Turtle Bay resort, Nor’shore. It’s everykine bes’ about O’ahu, an’ it’s gorgeous dis time of year. Or, if ya like, we could all just...” An inscrutable look passes between the siblings.  “Our house still dere, sittin’ empty excep’ when groundskeeper an’ house keeper come by. Bes’ of bo’d worlds...you could live local an’ use it as a base camp t’ explore all of my island.” She reaches up and hugs Cory tightly for a minute or two, before breathing softly and then pulling back, her eyes damp. “Mahalo, Cory, I don’ know I deserve everyt’ing but know I feel it here.” She touches the spot on her chest where her heart hides.
