Today's park adventure was...the boat ride!
The boat sets out:
Tumblr media
The safety briefing explains that lifejackets are available on each side of the boat, but since the water is only four feet deep--five in the tunnel--only very small passengers have to wear one.
We approach the tunnel:
Tumblr media
My inside-the-tunnel pictures didn't come out very well; I'm not 100% sure whether this one was supposed to be flowstone or tool marks from when they built the tunnel. I think flowstone?
Tumblr media
I don't have a clear photo of the tool marks, but they are very visible inside the tunnel. The canal--and tunnel--was built in the 1820's. They had to take a big iron bar, pound it into the wall with a sledgehammer to make a hole, then fill the holes with black powder--dynamite wasn't invented yet--light the homemade fuse, and run. It took them two years to cut the tunnel. (In case that date has got you wondering, we are north of the Mason-Dixon line, so these were paid workers--immigrants, mostly--who had chosen to take this job, though perhaps from a limited range of options. They got six dollars a month, and four were killed in accidents.)
Here we emerge from the tunnel:
Tumblr media
Passing some cattails on the bank...
Tumblr media
A little ways past the cattails, we turn around and head back into the tunnel...
Tumblr media
Another interesting thing you can see in the tunnel, which I do not have a photograph of, is a place where the layers of shale turn at an almost-90-degree angle to their usual orientation, which apparently geologists say is evidence of an earthquake about 130 million years ago.
Now back on the main side of the tunnel, here are some lilypads:
Tumblr media
Turtles were sighted in this area, but I didn't get any pictures of those, either.
A little ways after the lilypads, our Captain begins maneuvering us back to the dock:
Tumblr media
And that concludes the boat ride! Stop back at the ticket desk for souvenirs, bottled drinks, and ice cream sandwiches.
Sadly, dogs are not allowed on the boat--and Sophie isn't wild about either confined spaces or unstable walking surfaces, anyway--so I went home and picked her up after the boat ride. We walked along both sides of the canal and did some good wildlife spotting. Do you see the turtle here?
Tumblr media
I also played with my nature app and identified some plants, and then we got ice cream sandwiches.

See that white layer in this hillside? That's an extremely important white layer. 680,000 years ago (give or take), a large volcanic system in what is now Wyoming erupted catastrophically, spewing ash and debris across the North American continent. You might have heard of it, it's called Yellowstone Caldera. You may notice that these pictures in no way resemble the verdant forests of the Rocky Mountains and that is because they are from Death Valley, California, located more than 620 miles (1000 km) away from the Yellowstone Caldera!
Tumblr media
But... it gets cooler.
The hills this ash layer is exposed in, the Kit Fox Hills, have been uplifted. The mudstone and sediments here are ancient valley fill, meaning that they used to be the bottom of the valley and are now about 400'/120 m above the current valley floor. This is the action of the Northern Death Valley fault zone, one of California's longest active faults. In this area, that fault has some excellent outcrops as seen below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next door to Death Valley to the west is Panamint Valley. It's not quite as big or dramatic as Death Valley but it has many of the same sorts of geologic features which have formed over a shorter geologic timeframe, interestingly. The faults in Panamint Valley just move faster than those in Death Valley so things are a little more youthful over there. In the middle of Panamint Valley, we see this same Yellowstone ash layer but with a caveat - instead of a mere 400 feet, in Panamint Valley that ash is more than 500 feet above the valley floor! That suggests that the valley subsidence of Panamint Valley is about 20% faster than Death Valley. The true story is more complex than that, but it's good as a reference point. Let's see what that looks like.
Tumblr media
It's hard to see in this aerial imagery, but near the top of this steep escarpment is that same volcanic ash layer. It's a bit thicker here because this big pile of material I've outlined is an ancient delta. Panamint and Death Valleys have repeatedly hosted large lakes during cooler and wetter times. This huge delta deposit is over 1.2 million years old at the base, and about 600,000 years old at the top (above the Yellowstone ash). As the Panamint Mountains (background) rose and the valley subsided, huge amounts of eroded rock and gravel were dumped on this delta. So what you're looking at is a 1 million year-long record of the floor of Panamint Valley! How cool is that?

We're thrilled to announce that we've wrapped principal development work on Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut. We'll be releasing it this Fall (date TBD) so we can simultaneous ship the update with both the game's console release (surprise!) as well as official subtitling support for 11 new languages, all with the help of our wonderful new partners at Serenity Forge (who you might know from their publishing work on Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!)
There's a lot for us to share about The Pristine Cut, but before we get into the details, please check out our new trailer!
Here's what we've got coming for you: Content
For those of you who are just now hearing about The Pristine Cut, it's an entirely free director's cut of the game that adds about 35% more content on top of the initial release.
This includes massive expansions to The Den, The Apotheosis, and The Fury routes, each of which is over three times bigger than their release versions, with tons of variations to discover across multiple playthroughs.
On top of this, we're adding three brand new chapter three routes that will add even more depth to your stories with The Damsel, The Prisoner, and The Spectre.
And we're adding a new ending.
All in all, these additions come to over 2,500 new voice lines, over 1,200 new hand-drawn illustrations, and over 15 new tracks of music.
We're also adding an extensive CG gallery with over 400 unlocks to help all you completionists track your progress, complete with cryptic hints to help you discover some of the game's more obscure and buried interactions.
Tumblr media
Languages
And all of this is coming with a giant wave of localization support, covering the following languages: Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, German, Russian, Spanish (Latin American), Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, and Polish. These localizations are just going to cover subtitles, so we can be as thorough as possible about maintaining the quality of Jonny and Nichole's performances.
Consoles, Physical Release and New Merch
Tumblr media
With the help of Serenity Forge, we’re bringing Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut to every major current console — Nintendo Switch, PS4 + 5, and Xbox.
And these won’t just be available as digital downloads. You’ll also be able to pick up a physical edition for the Switch and PS5, with an exclusive sticker sheet and a download code for the game’s soundtrack.
And if that’s not enough we’re also doing a Collector’s Edition, complete with a 7 inch statue of the Princess, a mirror with a lenticular lens, an acrylic standee, and more.
And finally (for now), we’re launching the first wave of new line of sticker sheets, featuring chibi art of the Princesses as seen in The Pristine Cut’s new gallery. Pre-order them now at Topatoco!
Alongside these developments, we've also launched a new website for the game: check out slaytheprincess.com where you can order the physical editions, check out merch, and more!
Thank you so much for your patience while we've worked to make The Pristine Cut the definitive version of Slay the Princess. We can't wait to share all of the game's new stories with you this Fall.
Until then, we're back to working full-time on the next Episode of Scarlet Hollow (and have been for about a few weeks now!)
Best, Abby and Tony
