Léonie loves to play hockey so much, she'll play it anywhere and any time! On winter weekend mornings, she calls all the kids in the neighborhood to tell them to bring their gear and meet her on the ice. The nearby park has a frozen pond that's perfect for some high-energy games.

Léonie writes in her journal about how hockey is a big part of her life:
"I play hockey with Les Félines du St-Laurent, my atom level team. I also play outdoor hockey, road hockey, table hockey, and floor hockey! This year I play at the Atom level and my position is left wing so I have to be fast. I still have trouble getting the pick to stay with my stick, but I am getting better."

She also says that even though she'd play every day if she could, some days it's too cold. "There is a wind that comes up off the fleuve Saint-Laurent and some days it freezes our fingers, even inside our hockey gloves!"
Léonie wears a sweater and hat by Maplelea. Skates are American Girl brand. I made her hockey stick from foam board wrapped in masking tape, and the puck is a plastic jug lid painted black.
I like to spoil Léonie and I considered investing in some hockey gear for her, but it's so rare for me to find suitable ice that I couldn't justify the cost, knowing that it might be melted the next day. So I decided to take a shot at reproducing Maplelea's pond hockey set instead.

I rlly wanna go camping, but like in a degrading way, take me on an isolated trail, strip my clothes off except for a collar, make me walk and pee on all fours, tell me im a good girl and pet me when you take a break, let me roll about, get all muddy then go paddling, and when night falls, tie me up outside so i can huddle by the fire for warmth, the rope just a lil too short to be able to reach your tent.

Early Childhood - Outdoor Creative Play
Our children love the Outdoor Classroom! Outdoor creative play fosters imagination and creativity, as seen here, when this student created a nest out of sand, for his large, egg-shaped rock, pretending it was a dinosaur egg that needed warmth to hatch. This type of play encourages problem-solving skills, as students think through scenarios and develop stories. It also promotes physical activity and fine motor skills through hands-on interaction with natural materials. Additionally, outdoor play supports social development, as students often collaborate and communicate with peers during their imaginative adventures. These activities nurture independence, curiosity, and a love for learning.

Outdoor play is more than just fun—it’s essential for a child’s cognitive and physical development. From running around the playground to exploring nature, these activities significantly impact young minds and bodies. In fact, incorporating outdoor play into the daily routine of children enrolled in child care services in East Orange, New Jersey, can lead to remarkable developmental benefits.

Quote
Why Go Out to Play? Today’s children spend half as much time playing outdoors as their parents did—a trend seen worldwide. Concerns about safety, limited access to green spaces (especially in urban areas), and the lure of screens are reducing children’s connection to nature. But the benefits of outdoor play are profound. Spending more time outdoors boosts physical health, enhances social-emotional wellbeing, and supports cognitive and academic learning. Research even suggests that engaging with nature can improve children’s language and communication skills—essential for their development, education, and future opportunities. Myopia in Children: A Global Health Crisis
A recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology reveals a troubling trend: one in three children worldwide is now affected by myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness. This condition means that distant objects appear blurry while close ones remain clear. The research shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on children’s vision, largely due to increased…
