Reading Daomu Biji as a non mainland Chinese would make you feel like, "Why so racist?"

But actually, NPSS might not be as racist or eccentric but in fact, truly a good writer who understood the way his characters and their setting would think.

The somehow racist part of Daomu Biji, perhaps is the subtle prejudice about their own Ethnic Minorities and the subtle Han Chinese supremacy, and unsavory comments about their bordering countries.

But If you're looking at it from the characters' POV, meaning, from a (somewhat average) mainland Chinese dude, it's actually quite natural. That's what they get from their history and the information from their media.

The way Daomu Biji put any extreme culture, such as sacrifices etc, to Ethnic minorities is actually quite justified, since in other countries too, that's what happened. And it's also quite logical or accurate, historically. Even today, some ethnic minorities are still continuing their "strange" customs. So it's not entirely racist.

In fact, Daomu Biji also wasn't merciful to their own Han Chinese ancestor's past incident. For example, by telling that King Mu of Zhou was fabricating history. Instead of being warmly welcomed by XiWangMu, he's actually there to invade but failed. In embarrassment, he fabricated history about him being entertained in XiWangMu's territory.

Next, the beef with other countries.

But in reality, it's not just Chinese, but other countries' citizens too, in Asia, particularly, would have beef with their bordering countries. And some (rather uncultured) people would also call them using nicknames. For example, in JP media, we often see how the Yakuza are always either connected or having dispute with Chinese Mafia. In SK media, we often see their Mafia connected or in a hostile relationship with Yakuza. In China too, their Mafia/other underground forces would often either connected or have enmity with Vietnamese Gangster.

In Daomu Biji, we can see that Wu Xie 's perspectives would always go neutral. Either citing the history or telling the informaiton that was told in China to general public like Wu Xie.

Pangzi or Pan Zi, on the other hand, are characters who aren't as "cultured" as Wu Xie. So their POV would often be quite racist. And that's actually rather in character and accurate, considering their background and character setting.

This, also applied to XiaoGe or Men You Ping. We can see that someone like him who cares a shit about the world, will turn out to never give zealous Han Chinese supremacy or racist comment about anything or anyone.

Surprisingly, Daomu Biji actually also isn't subtle to the actions of their Han Chinese or the past action of their government. For example, whenever the book was discussing about various people who smuggled Tombs goods overseas, the book didn't try to gloss that even among Han Chinese there were people like that. There's also when the book was describing the cruel reality during the purge of Superstitious and Religious forces in China, to strengthen their government's influence. At that time, people didn't even dare to say they know a little about Chinese ancient divination technique (Qimen Dunjia) for fear of being arrested or worse, eliminated. But most of all, Daomu Biji too, isn't merciful when it came to the protagonist's perspectives. The book isn't trying to beutify or justify Wu Xie's actions as a grave robber throughout.

But what I want to say is that, Daomu Biji is a series written from the perspective of (quite) average Chinese citizens, who aren't Overseas returnee (to be able to see more perspectives from the global history or information other than their government propaganda). While some topics were probably quite sensitive, but if you stop for a second and consider where they're taken at, you will understand why the Author wrote it that way.

“Xiao San-ye, carry my things. Pangzi, you take the lead.”

“What are you going to—” Wu Xie’s question is cut off by Pan Zi scooping Zhang Qiling up from the ground as though he were a small child. He has no choice but to wrap an arm around Pan Zi’s neck to keep himself balanced.

“Good idea,” Wu Xie says with a bright smile as Pangzi moves in front to lead them to the spot where they’ll be making camp.

It is far from a good idea. Pan Zi is their second best fighter and now both his arms are occupied with carrying Zhang Qiling. If something attacks them, the few seconds it will take to set Zhang Qiling down could be the difference between life and death.

“I can walk,” Zhang Qiling insists. Firmly. But Pan Zi doesn’t listen and neither do Wu Xie or Pangzi who are chattering away, this time about what Pangzi will cook for dinner.

This is foolish and reckless. Zhang Qiling should be at the front of their group acting as the first line of defence for anything that tries to attack them. Like this he’s a liability, and he’s made Pan Zi into one too.

Personal Impression: Adventure Behind the Bronze Door (Tibetan Sea Flower).

I was caught with life when I had to skipped this series, and so I was late to watched it.

Please welcome, the newest of The Iron Triangle!

They look great! Welcome!!

I thought this series was after "Tomb of the Sea", since Wu Xie was quite old and wrecked. It reminds me of Wu Xie from "Reunion". XD

This one was actually before "Tomb of the Sea", before Xiao Ge enters the bronze door, replacing Wu Xie who was supposed to guard it. But, Xiao Ge couldn't let him, so he was the one who guard it instead. This made Wu Xie feels so bad.

While waiting for Xiao Ge returns, Wu Xie and Fatty were caught up in another adventure, a task that was assigned by Xiao Ge since he can't do it by himself (for guarding the bronze door for 10 years). In this adventure, Wu Xie and Fatty also found the truth about Xiao Ge's past life which he always seek his memories.

Xiao Ge's life was pitiful. He only wanted to know about his birth, about his mother, but he was forced to be the family leader if he wanted the answers. He has also to shoulder the curse of having memory lost, while the other family members were free from it. And it seemed, no one could understand him.

"You all Zhang family is so stupid," said Wu Xie to Zhang Haixing. He was right. The righteous family has been declined for generations and they were fighting against each other for mundane purposes. While in other hand, they "sacrificed" Xiao Ge for their own goods. To be honest I've lost my respect for this main family. XD

Maybe it's faith that Xiao Ge meets Wu Xie and Fatty. His brothers who always think about him, care for him, and will know if he's gone. That's why Xiao Ge willing to replaced Wu Xie to guard the bronze door, and that's also why Wu Xie willing to look and remembers Xiao Ge past so he could tell him when he lost his memory again.

They have a strong bond, and that bond that made Xiao Ge still remembers Wu Xie when he finally comes out after 10 years. And that strong bond that made me love them so much: both pingxie and the iron triangle.

I haven't read the novel version so I don't know if there's any differences with the series adaptation. The adaptation story was okayish to me. I can follow the story line quite well. The pace was also okay. The plot, the characters and the acting skill (I even like the biologist foreigner, Feng), the action scenes, and of course the comedy and bond between Wu Xie and Fatty. As always, Fatty is the last stand for taking care of Wu Xie when Xiao Ge wasn't around. If Xiao Ge was there, Fatty would still be responsible for the two of them. Fatty is such a "mama" for both Wu Xie and Xiao Ge. That's why for me, in whatever adaptations, Fatty is the real MVP. XD

Through this series, I can finally understand about some of the mysteries, especially about Xiao Ge's life: the truth about his life, his mother, and his burdens. Also, this is the starting point where Wu Xie finally changed not to be as naive as in his younger times. He's ready to be scheming in order to fight the Wang family in "Tomb of the Sea".

Episode 32 is a must watch episode! Wu Xie and Fatty came together to pick up Xiao Ge, and Xiao Ge said the famous line to Wu Xie, "You've grown old."

Now, there's still missing parts after Ultimate Note till Xiao Ge enters the bronze door. When this adaptations really comes out, it will definitely a tear jerking.

Until then, let's enjoy the peaceful life that the iron triangle could have (before they go to their next adventure).

Xiao-ge you better swoop in and save him first thing next episode. You were seriously slacking in your 'save Wu Xie' duties this episode. You just stood there when the lead corpse eater came after him and did absolutely nothing when he decided to almost blow himself up.
