Hey guys, just in case you wanted some half-headcanon, half-canon stuff!
[Link to the object-human height comparison poll for context]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Source (for the first tweet, the rest are in the replies)]
Transcript:
"This isn't canon to BFDI, but I always operated on the idea that BFDI's doors are the same height as doors in the real world, and that Roboty barely fits in doorways (so, his height minus antenna). Other characters' heights relative to Roboty are therefore relative to IRL doors"
"So most of the characters are somewhere between 2 and 3"
"This makes sense to me because in-universe they have normal human-scale items like pencils and tacos"
Tumblr media
"so sure, a lot of them would be "taller" than an average person, but because their faces tend to be so low, for a lot of them youd still have to look down to have a conversation"
"im sure ive brought this up before but this is why the doors in the EXIT and in the tpot hotel were designed to be extra wide and to have handles extra low"

object lifespans?
OK so I'm going way too deep into this, but, lifespans
My original idea was objects dont age but can die from literally anything else,
But then there's the question of objects that rot, objects that decay, corrode, or fade over time, resulting in, either I give everyone age immortality and see how that effects things, or go more of a different objects have different lifespans, and see where that takes things
For the no aging route
I don't think it effects too much until maybe their veriant of the late 1800's (not accurate to humans btw) when enough advancements and regulations are made that disease, injury, and workplace accedent deaths become much less common, and it becomes noticeable that people just, aren't really dying anymore, advancements start taking a very long time sense the sense if urgency isn't really there anymore, mortality isn't much of an issue now, so maybe that section of the story could be the objects figuring out, well, what now? What's the point of anything now that we literally fixed death and already explored almost the entire planet and its connected realms? Do they go stagnant? Do they regress as older generations refuse to allow change and try to bring back the "good ol days" back when life had reason? Do they try to skip to the space age and go beyond their own planet?
But then there's also the aspect of object fragility, there will still always be death as long as fragile glass, paper, food, and clockwork objects exist, this might balance things out a bit, or cause a societal issue as weaker objects are either babied or seen as lesser, maybe even both, characters like thermometer and red light are at a higher death risk than characters like motorbike helmet and skeleton key, now the conflict is less on a race against time and more on the device between sturdy and fragile objects.
For the some age some don't route
Different objects have different lifespans, in early time periods also resulting in a bit of a power gap as those that don't age seize power that they can't lose unless they're killed or overthrown manually, while objects that do age have to try and ensure stability while making more of their own kind to try and ensure their legacy's continue, likely food, paper, and some plant based objects have the shortest lifespans, followed by likely furniture onjects, clothing objects, and things like books, that need matinence to survive, followed longer lasting plant based objects, and ending in metal objects (elements might be a bit wonky) then things like stones, crystals, gold, and some silver objects being immortal,
This could lead to inturesting long lasting arcs, like the crown siblings, Goldie is literally immortal, she will never die of age, tarnished and their father are also potentially immortal if tarnished doesn't start corrooding, but then there's copper, copper is already corroding, out of the three siblings he is mortal, he's already dying and will die in what feels like nothing more than maybe a few months to Goldie and tarnished,
Tarnished is almost immortal, but compass and hook aren't, they will both die before him without proper matinence and he has to live with that knowledge that his lovers won't last as long as he will.
The fragility thing may still apply here as well
I'm probably going way too deep into this but it's fun thinking about how these things work, how an object based society would develop over time and function, what is their rate of advancement, what are the horrible fuck ups that show up in their history books? The misconceptions that continue for generations before its realized that it's been wrong the entire time? There's so much to work with!

don't you want to be a cult leader? - danyal al ghul au
this is mostly a joke post but i thought it was funny and had to share so--
his first mistake was, obviously, inheriting his father's inability to see an injustice and stand still. -- actually, danyal's first mistake was his lair being so big. a mountainous island with a large temple in the center resembling his old home in Nanda Parbat? With sprawling foliage and rivers and streams and waterfalls galore? What was he going to do with all that space? Let it go to waste? He had plants there! Native trees of the ghost zone growing from the soil! He couldn't let it all be left unchecked!
So naturally after helping a fellow teenage assassin ghost -- who he later learns is named Akihiko, -- from Walker of all people, he sent them over to hang low at his lair until it was safe enough for them to wander around the Zone. Walker couldn't get through Danyal's astrofield if his life depended on it, and trust him -- he's tried. Danny was clearing out debris from his stupid transport vans for weeks.
Honestly it wasn't so bad, he and Aki really quickly became fast friends and Danny loves having a sparring partner close to his level again -- he hasn't had this much fun fighting since he left the League. Aki was very dedicated and levelheaded, the both of them clicked really well because of it.
Nonono, the real trouble began after Danyal met some long-passed League members and allowed them to come join his island as well. Apparently they had made a few enemies of the zone, and maybe Danyal still felt some loyalty to the League. He couldn't just let them be left to rot. Their zealotry could be overlooked so long as they kept it contained and helped him take care of his island.
And it.. snowballs from there? He meets a teen squire aptly calling himself Ambroise -- whether that was his living name or not is yet to be seen -- who died during feudal france, who is just about as dramatic and passionate as every french stereotype makes them out to be. He calls Danyal "my moon and great muse" -- which is both flattering and little uncomfortable, but Danyal's grown up in the League as the Grandson of the Demon Head, he is used to mild worship. he passes it off as nothing more, nothing less. -- and while his energy is overwhelming on the worst of days, he helps Danny draw out of his shell more in ways that Sam and Tucker still struggle with.
Him and Aki butt heads a lot, but the two seem to hold the other in at least some positive regard, so Danny doesn't worry too much about them fighting while he's gone. It only becomes a mild issue when Aki also begins calling Danny "my moon". It's a little sweet, so Danyal brushes it off.
Then he takes in a troupe of ghosts some time after he defeats Pariah Dark and they begin calling him "great one" just as the yetis do in the far frozen. This is where he meets the twins -- a pair of sibling ghosts who call themselves Trixie and Missy (short for Trick and Mislead) -- who aren't quite as passionate as Ambroise but more energetic than Aki. Eventually they also start calling Danyal "my moon" and attach themselves to his hip, even within the living. They like to hide in his shadow and cause trouble for the rest of the students. He makes sure they don't hurt anyone.
He's pretty sure Aki is jealous, same with Ambroise, but he can't be too certain other than the fact that they become much more lingering (re: clingy) whenever he visits the island.. Something he's trying to do much more often these days due to the increasing amount of people living there now. Since when did he become so popular?
Then there's Pēnelópeia from the Greater Athens, who ran away from home and joined his Island after he ran into her while she was being chased by Skulker -- and he's pretty sure the reason was because of her chimeric appearance. Her strange eyes and mismatched wings and lion's tail and talons. She assimilates into his friend group very easily, she gets along well with Ambroise and Trixie and Danny usually finds the three of them climbing the trees to pluck the most fruit from the top. They can fly and he knows it, but they prefer to climb.
Then finally there's silent poet Akkara who comes from ancient mesopotamia, who gets along most with Aki -- which is no surprise there considering their similar personality dispositions. he watches Aki and Danyal fight each other and leaves comments on this or that that he notices. He writes Danyal poems on clay tablets and leaves them by his room.
They're one big mismatched group of outcasts, and Danny's got the other ghosts on his island to tend to, because they're living on his island and he wants to be hospitable even if he struggles with that. But he spends the most of his time with them.
Sam and Tucker are making fun of him. Tucker jokingly tells him 'careful Danny, at this rate you're gonna start a cult'. Danny really wishes he had taken that joke more seriously.
He just. keeps. collecting people. Wayward souls lost in the zone, looking for shelter or refuge from something or other -- whether that be another hostile ghost, or a past afterlife, or just a purpose. Danyal finds them, he takes them in, offers them a place on his island until they are ready to leave. Many seldom do. He's not complaining -- he has the space, and it feels like it's only ever growing.
His close friends, his "inner circle" as he's heard the others call them, keep insistently calling him "my moon". He starts calling them his stars, because then it only feels fair. They're his stars, this is his constellation. It becomes a thing; little star halos begin forming behind their heads, picking them out from the rest. He loves them so much, it's hard to place. Sam and Tucker are also his stars, but they reside in the living realm, they're his tie to Life. Meanwhile, his friends here know what it's like to be dead, and sometimes its nice to relate.
Those living on his island keep calling him "Great One" and he's beginning to notice zealotry in their care for his island. He really, deeply appreciates it. His close friends gain nicknames -- as his stars, it's only natural for him to pick them out from the cluster in the skies. Akihiko, his Sirius and bright star. Trix and Missy, Castor and Pollux, the twins and troublemakers. Ambroise, his zealous Antares and close friend. Penelopeia, chimeric and loyal Vega. And Akkara, his Arcturus and strength.
It's ridiculous how long it takes for him to notice; he is, of course, a deadly trained assassin. He is meant to be observant -- and normally he is! But somehow this becomes a blind spot. One that becomes too big to be dealt with by the time he realizes it.
He should've noticed when Aki, his Sirius, stood beside him one day while Danyal looked over his island and saw the sprawling spirits carrying on about their afterlife and bowing to him as they saw him, and said: "I looked down into the depths when I met you; I couldn't measure it." They aren't one for flowing prose, it took him so off guard he was silent for over a minute before he finally spoke.
Danyal should've recognized devotion for what it is, and yet he didn't. He should've recognized it when Antares began spouting praises about him, crowing about his radiance and resplendence to the heavens. He just brushed it off as Ambroise being Ambroise. He should've recognized it when Trix and Missy nearly broke Dash's leg after he knocked Danyal's books out of his hands, he excused it as them being protective. Of them coming from times where such violence may have been customary -- after all, that's what he used to be like. What he was still like, sometimes, when his emotions nearly got the better of him.
He should've noticed it when the people living on his island followed his word like gospel, looked at him like he hung the stars in the sky. When his friends gifted him a shawl with the moon phases delicately embroidered into it, with silver, shimmering thread and moving stars lovingly stitched into it. Their constellations seen clear as day in the dark fabric. When he found small shrines dedicated to him -- but they lacked any image of him beyond stones carved to look like moons, so he ignored it. When the religious imagery began popping up.
He really, really should've noticed it when a bunch of cultists accidentally summoned Antares, and Antares had turned to him when he arrived and called them heretics. But he was so centered on the fact that they had kidnapped one of his stars, that he hadn't paid much attention to what Ambroise had said.
Sages say that faith is blind, they should also say faith in you is even blinder.
It really only hits him one afternoon while he's sitting in Sam's room studying with Tucker, Missy and Trixie lounging at his feet, Aki sat on his right, Penelopeia braiding his hair, Ambroise draped against him, and Akkara lurking over him. Its one of the rare few times they're all in one room together.
It hits him like a bolt of lightning. He looks up from his textbook. "Oh Ancients," he says in no amounting shock. Everyone looks up to him.
"I've become my grandfather."

Two of my friends just read the original HDG in a discord VC.
They seemed to enjoy the world building but were kinda put-off by Elvira and Miss Nele’s dynamic.
They commented on how Elvira was constantly unhappy and how the concept of domestication is sorta framed as a negative, at least if you’re not already into it.
I sent them both Dog of War, since I think it’s just… better than the original, especially when it comes to how it frames and executes being a pet and I think they might enjoy it more, even if it has ‘weirder’ kinks and explicit sex scenes.
They’ve said they won’t be reading it in-call (primarily due to the aforementioned sex scenes) but I think it’s generally a better read.
Yeah so TLDR; I accidentally got my friends interested, even if morbidly, in the HDG setting.

Honestly, the world building in AGOT’s very first chapter is so unserious. Like yeah there’s a penal colony that guards a magic ice wall, and there’s this powerful feudal lord who carries out the king’s justice by taking his barely pubescent sons to watch a public execution - he also uses it as a show for his war hostage ward, and there are these BIG, HUGE magic wolves that can grow as large as a horse and are super duper rare and dangerous but now six of them are suddenly here for no reason whatsoever, and today’s public execution victim claims that the ice zombies of legend are back to wipe out humanity?! And oh yeah, Jon Snow fucking HATES Theon Greyjoy!

I'm actually so obsessed with him it's not even funny if i'm not listening to a TikTok or music directly related to him I can't focus free me free me
This is @/cherubpuppet's OC for a object show [au? pitch? wip show? How do I categorize this] and I've been destroyed by the fact that ruler art is infinitely superior [and 10x longer] and i don't have a good enough grasp on lip gloss's personality to make fanfiction so I am frozen in "want make fanart but fanart takes effort :["
#also object shows are the new mlp community change my mind /ref#from what ive seen a very large part of the community is centered around death/gore or mature topics? it reminds me of the mlp infection au#that and smile hd and everybody keeps saying object shiws are kids shows - if kids are making this stuff then good for them /gen#every fandom has its toxic/proship/18+ side obviously but from my pov gen alpha needed something they coudl handle age appropriate extremes#with - its just alot harder to make compelling emotional angst/gore with newer ultra sanitized shows or w/ mascot horror#and like thats a whole nother tooic but its obvious to me younger kids have flocked to mascot horror so harshly because average kids tv is#much more afraid of tackling any big topics to the point that the ones that DO [bluey] immediately are pushed into front and center#but i mean i also rewatched a few episodes of the shows i grew up with and ngl i think we need shit like ren and stimpy and invader zim#i hate ren and stimpy and i didnt grow up with zim but i grew up with pbs kids shit and that shit looking back was hella boring i never#cared for any of the tv shows i saw aside from elmos world and even then i was hoping that something gorey would happen. at like 5 yrs old#im rambling anyway im not sure if im actually going to get into the os communitg but i AM horribly attached to tape to the point that its#maybe possibly becoming harmful to my mental health so im gonna stick around for him for like months#just know that if im not posting anything its because im obsessed with this guy#oh also DID/MALE SA REP LETS FUCKIN GOOO#I LOVE PSYCHOLOGY AND IVE HAD LIKE 4 FRIENDS WITH DID/OSDD I NEED MORE POSITIVE REP OF STIGMATIZED/COMPLEX DISORDERS !!!!!#art#tape dispenser#search for smos#talk talks#EDIT NO. NO DONT SAY IM THE ONLY PERSON ON TUMBLR WHO HAS USED THE SMOS TAG NO. OH MY GOD#PLEASE BEING OBSESSED WITH SOMEONE ELSES OC IS SO GARD DONT LEAVE ME ALONE DO I NEED TO BUILD THIS FANDOM FROM THE GROUND UP??? NOO

technically in an object setting corpses are VERY reusable
Serieously like, depending on that worlds culture it might be normal to use someone's corpse as the item it was originally used for, relative who's a bag died? Use the body as an actual bag,
(You'd probably have to check before death if they were ok with this, similar to cremation vs burial or that guy who wanted his scull displayed on the mantle but it is an inturesting thought)
I get we tend to apply human logic to objects which can also be fun, but going purely off of object logic only, no humans involved in any way, technically it could be seen as respectful to reuse a corpse after a person dies
(Thought about this when thinking of box ftom ii but ngl even with this logic what mephone did was still morbid af sense they were pretending the corose was alive the entire time xD)

HI. HELLO. SORRY. i heard we’re talking about hunger au + the others finding out about fucked up stuff that grian’s doing
i’m obsessed with the potions. in order to die (which he doesn’t even *want*, or at least doesnt think he wants, he just believes it’s the safest option) he has to corrupt his friends’ attempt to help him. healing potions have been like. the only thing he’s conceded on for his own comfort. tango is super excited when he learns about them bc 1. it’s something actionable and immediate thatll directly help, and 2. grian gets noticeably… not hopeful, exactly, but definitely more responsive the few times that they’re talking about the potions. which. i’m sure tango will feel really good about after the fact (assuming the plan happens).
and then mumbo overextended himself making a *gold farm* entirely for potions and pearl “got carried away” collecting netherrack. it’s so clearly a priority for them. how are they going to react when grian hurts himself using them?? when they find out that they don’t do anything notable in the first place *except* give him a way to hurt himself?? after potions almost killed him the FIRST time??????? augh. i think about it so much
(also i heard we could pick emojis so im picking 📞 ty <3)
You're more than welcome to pick an emoji!! :D i honestly love it, i love seeing regulars in my inbox its like having people wave at me from across the street whenever they send in asks hehe :]
Man, the potions..... yeah the potions are crazy dude, i can see why everyone is obsessed with them. I havent exactly made a post on this yet, but healing potions don't actually do anything for a Watcher's structural code (theyre designed for Player surface code specifically, so they arent even fully compatible with Watcher surface code), which makes him conceding on them even more painful, because the others are latching onto this single one opportunity to help and its not even actually helping. Its being used, in fact, to eventually hurt him. Nobody is gonna like that.
Im really glad how everyone's desperate attempts at getting the potion ingredients are being picked up on in fic, especially since those references been sorta randomly sprinkled in throughout the chapters (usually through dialogue). Yeah they are.. thats gonna be Fun when they find out the truth on that one >:] ive had the scene for that in mind for AGES and i cannot WAIT to finally get it out there for everyone to see, because man. Its gonna be visceral, i'll tell you that
Im so so glad you like what im doing here enough to be rotating it in your brain like this!!! :D i shake your hand we sit and spin the potions like rotisserie chicken

Here’s some thoughts I’ve had to flesh out the TCO cinematic universe. all of these revolve around 1 question: If the world as we know it was objects instead of humans, how would things change?
First, there would be more specialists in professions that involve healthcare. Instead of having a general doctor and then other doctors like a dermatologist and a psychiatrist, objects would probably need a more devised system for different types of treatment. Like dermatology would probably be split for people made of glass vs metal etc. Barbers would also have more things they would be trained to use cause hair isn’t to common, like sharpening and polishing type shit. Though like irl, they also can be done at home.
In the same vein as healthcare, emergency care would probably need to have specific procedures for treating objects of different materials. Like you wouldn’t treat a 60lb child with the same things as a 250lb adult, you wouldn’t treat a Marble the same way as a Dumbbell.
Infrastructure would probably change a lot for different reasons, hight difference and weight difference would have to be a factor in buildings. Cars would probably be built for objects with specific order.
Jails would probably be a lot different, and gyms would change a lot.
:)

re: your post about jin guangshan: i think examining him in the way you've described really highlights the absolute horrors of the gentry in the mdzs world. because to examine WHY he is the way he is highlights a society that has absolutely no interest in reigning in the desires of its nobility. jin guangshan is the end point of that, and wen ruohan is as well; the difference is that they exercise this in different ways. jin guangshan attacks the vulnerable largely on an individual and interpersonal basis, using and discarding individual people; wen ruohan attacks the vulnerable largely on a more collective basis, conquering sects and families. they both want power, they just have different methods of obtaining it. and the other members of nobility have very few methods through which they can curb this behavior, outside of an all out war!
jin guangshan and wen ruohan must have been children, once; i doubt they ever experienced any kind of deprivation or guidance and the environments of jinlintai and nightless city's upper nobility likely only exacerbated that. i don't think it's a coincidence that the characters who likely grew up with the most power and privilege, and who exercised this in the most destructive ways, are killed by the guy who arguably experienced the Least power and privilege in his early life!!!! of course jgy would be the one to kill them both!!!!!
bam 🙌 nail, head, you just absolutely hammered the shit out of it.
Tumblr media
i want to print this out and frame it. edited to add: because you know who does rein in those desires once he comes to power?
😌
