Met a new neighbor tonight, started talking about work.

Me: So yeah, I'm trying to work my way toward something more stable, especially because I have a queer nibling in Texas who might need a place to land.

Neighbor: NIBLING?

Me: Yes?

Neighbor: Is that one of your millennial words?

Me: (wondering what age I look rn because "millennial" sometimes means "kid" and it's too dark to see the gray in my hair) Not ... really? It's a gender-neutral term for, like, nieces and nephews. Like sibling, you know? If you have a brother and a sister, then you have siblings?

Neighbor: Yeah, but what's a nibling?

Me: In this case, it's one of my brother's kids. He has four of them.

Neighbor: ???

Me: One of them is ... kinda figuring some stuff out, gender-wise, so I'm using gender-neutral language for them until they ask me to use something different. Just giving them space, you know? They're a kid, they need some time. So: my brother has four kids, and I have three nephews and a nibling. (Decides not to mention bff's kids, whom I have also adopted as niblings.)

Neighbor: That's...

Me: (smiles desperately)

Neighbor: That's really kind of you. I've never even thought of that. That's a really good way to let them figure it out for themselves, you know?

Me: Exactly! It's not like I can figure it out for them, right? So I'm just holding space for however it shakes out.

Neighbor: They're lucky to have you.

Me: I'm trying. That's all I can do, right?

Neighbor: Nibling. That's a GOOD word.

Me: Yeah, I like it.

My nieces (2 and almost 4) have to use tiny cups and bowls and stuff and it always gets me. Like I'll see one of them cradling a shot glass full of juice with a lil straw and I'm just like 🥺 they are tiny because they're small.....

My nephews are likely neurodivergent and like to have their faces squeezed. Therefore, I sometimes call them "Squish" and "Squeeze." Squish is eldest. I also say, "squishhhh" or "squeeeze" in a weird, gravelly voice as I gently-but-firmly crush their little faces.

They love it.

My nephew turned 18 today. I’m so excited to watch as his future unfolds. Though I do miss the little 4 year old who called me on the phone so often that I had to ask his dad to limit it to every other day instead of every single day. But I’m so happy for all the things his future holds. And I will love him every single day, in every single one of those futures, no matter which one this multiverse plays out as.

i had the idea to crochet my soon to be little nephew a bunch of little farm animals. then I thought, oh what about instead if I just make a stuffed animal of some kind (that i definitely hope will become his favorite. poor kid's got expectations and hes far from born yet lmao). did some thinking last night, and settled on a monkey and found the cutest pattern for a nearly 18inch monkey.

now have i crochet at all recently? nope. I did a few stitches in high school and that was pretty much it. But i also had the same level of sewing ability and then i was able to make a cape so I'm feeling quite hopeful.

but just the idea of this little guy being a part of my nephew's life when I cant be because i'm just so far away, and knowing that my sister is probably going to really appreciate it (bonus that she always had an obsession with monkeys). god im genuinely already bawling from the future happiness I can expect this little monkey to bring. (it definitely helps knowing they are not the type to allow an abundance of pointless toys,plus theyve got very little space right now)Might even make those little farm animals for his first birthday, since I already wanted those to be a more educational thing rather than just a snuggly.

The Nephew (18) has moved into our basement “apartment”. I peed with the door open for the last time today. 😭

Is there a set of pronouns for familial relationships? My niece is having a baby, so I'm going to be a grand-uncle - but that raises a bunch of questions because family relationships are gendered. What is the nonbinary term for a grand-niece or -nephew? Grand-neuf?

My 8yo nibling was confused about why the Miraculous Ladybug movie was so different from the show.

So I paused it and explained the movie happens in a universe that’s a little different from the show. It’s what would happen if things were a little different.

“Oh! Okay!” No problem at all conceptualizing that.

And then the running joke was “are they gonna kiss yet?” and my constant response “that would be too easy” which led beautifully into the final shot of the movie and had us all giggling.
