A stunning poster for The Tale of Zatoichi (1962), the first of the 26-film series starring Shintaro Katsu as the wandering blind swordsman.
The poster also features Shigeru Amachi as Miki Hirate, the ronin with whom Zatoichi befriends and, tragically, must duel; and Masayo Banri as Otane, the woman who falls in love with Ichi. Otane has the distinction of being the only character to appear in three films in the series.
Man o man, I gotta get me one of these for my wall.

Review originalmente postada: 09/Fev/2023 no Letterboxd.

Amagi Pass, 1983 dir. Haruhiko Mimura

status: complete download here **notes**
- there are a few Japanese cultural concepts that play a key role in understanding some of the story’s main plot points:
・the film heavily references Yasunari Kawabata’s “The Izu Dancer”, wherein a young boy traveling by himself through the mountains of Izu comes across a small traveling theater group. One of them is a young girl, whom he becomes subtly attached to, but never has a chance to get very close to her. It’s a beautiful, short story - definitely check it out if you liked this movie.
・’zouri’ are lightweight Japanese sandals, usually made from straw, that are a lot cooler to wear in summer and a little less formal than the traditional wooden ‘geta’. The ‘takageta’ that Kenzo speaks of are wooden geta that have elevated slats, common footwear for highschool boys at the time. (they’re also not so good for hiking.
・the villagers up at Amagi talk in a very thick Izu dialect. It’s very hard to illustrate the differences between the villagers’ way of speaking and the semi-regular Japanese the Shimoda city folk speak, and I’m not a big fan of English approximation, so I kept it largely subtle (not to mention the acting kind of does a good job of illustrating the difference in character) - but it should be noted.
・”yoroshiku” is a very difficult word to translate, and depends largely on context. It’s a very common word to say in japanese, when you’re asking a favour of someone, or just trying to encourage formal repartee. “~~o yoroshiku” is a common shorthand phrase that usually means something like “I hope that you’ll (take care of this)”, or “I’m counting on you (to...)”. However the instances in the film where this film appears - and it does have a large role in the plot - move too quickly to proper convey the nuances implied in the situation, so with my translation I tried my best to convey the casual frankness of the way it’s used, plus a translation note to add information about its more formal usage/nuance.
・Foot sizes during the period the film is mostly set in were measured in a unit called ‘mon’. The foot size that keeps being mentioned in the film is pronounced as ‘9 1/2 mon’, but I opted to use the modern equivalent of 22.8 centimetres as I thought it’d be easier for modern audiences to make the connection with current foot sizes.
・The traditional song featured heavily in the film is “Ōtone Tsukiya”, or “Moonlit Night in Ōtone”. Originally perfomed by Yoshio Tabata and released on record in 1939, it was probably popular around the time certain parts of the film are set.  The song tells the story of a fencer ronin by the name of Miki Hirate, who came to the aid of a gambler friend in battle by the riverside at Ōtone one night, only to be felled while his friend survived. You can listen to the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-0j58U0M7o

ZATOICHI MONOGATORI aka THE TALE OF ZATOICHI
Released April 12, 1962.
The first of a series of 25 films that ran from 1962 through 1973, followed by a 100-episode television series, and a final film in 1989, all starring the inimitable Shintaro Katsu as Zatoichi the blind swordsman.
This film is more deliberately paced than the bulk of the series.  However, It does a wonderful job of introducing Ichi and the world he lives in.  Many of the mainstays of the series are seen here for the first time: Ichi winning at dice despite his blindness, Ichi’s intolerance for yakuza who trod all over the common folk, Ichi’s lightning-fast swordplay, and his strong sense of justice.
The film is loosely based on a short story from 1948 by Kan Shimozawa.  That story gave the reader just the barest details about Zatoichi,; he’s more of a mystery than anything else.  Luckily, Katsu-san was up to the challenge of fleshing the character outing bringing him fully to life.
The film - and Ichi himself - proved to be so popular that the sequel, The Tale of Zatoichi Continues (Zoku Zatoichi Monogatori) was released exactly six months later.

The Tale of Zatoichi (Zatoichi Monogatari) (1962).
This is the one that started the 26-film series, along with the 100-episode television series.
We are introduced to Ichi, a lowly anma (blind masseur) and yakuza with an uncanny ability to fight with a sword. He's also amazingly good at gambling, as he can hear how the dice fall.
Ichi gets hired to help out a yakuza gang in a brewing war with a rival gang over territory. The opposing gang, knowing Ichi's reputation with the sword, hires the ronin Hirate to aid their side. And, as fate would have it, Ichi and Hirate meet and become friends, despite knowing they are on opposite sides.
Ichi also meets Otane, a young woman engaged to a yakuza, but wishing to escape her fate. Otane finds in Ichi a man she truly loves and admires, and she's willing to leave her village and travel with Ichi for the rest of her life.
This film is much more deliberately paced than the rest of the series. That's understandable, as there's a lot of story to present, but the pace also helps to ramp up the tension. This film plays more as a drama until the gang war finally erupts, and then there's sword fighting a plenty.
Ichi himself is such an interesting, likable and engaging character that you don't mind the lack of action, because you're spending time getting to know him. And as the climax approaches, with the odds continually getting stacked against him, you're worried that there's no way he can possibly survive.
There is no colossal battle featuring Ichi in lone combat against a small army of enemies. That would be introduced in the sequel, The Tale of Zatoichi Continues, six months later. That set piece would become the signature of the series, with the stakes - and amount of enemies to fight - growing with each subsequent film.
