Feelings on the LDH Girls Battle?
Honestly... I have a LOT of feelings that I'll babble about below. To keep it short my feelings are pretty mixed. It's exciting but also... kinda suspicious.
I'm not particularly surprised that LDH jumped into the arena of an audition show. They actually have a long history of them between the boys auditions for EXILE TRIBE new members, Vocal Auditions (both male and female), even IconZ. Notably, the members of iScream were selected via LDH presents THE GIRLS AUDITION. The only difference is LDH Girls Battle will be more widely shown - international fans will need to keep eyes peeled for Youtube streaming.
Given the crazy success of Produce 101 Japan the Girls, and No No Girls specifically it makes sense to jump onto the more widely available trend. They have a ton of talented female artists still on their roster to pull experience from - i.e. Sato Harumi who is hosting. I would not be surprised if other artists like Dream Ami, or Dream Shizuku come on as guests. The will most likely, avoid bringing on Girls2 for reasons mentioned below. Not to mention their back catalogue of music to pull from is huge, and they won't need to jump through licensing and permissions unlike other programs... I'm personally hoping they will dig out and dust off some of LOVE's music but that probably won't happen lmao.
That being said, I'm side-eying the whole thing given their track history with girl groups in the past six-ish years specifically. IconZ was their last audition program and the resulting group - Moonchild, was disbanded after less then a year of activity (May 2023 - April 2024). Flower (disbanded 2019), E-Girls (disbanded 2020), SAYY (disbanded 2020) and Happiness (disbanded 2023) were all disbanded within a very short period of time as well. SG5 to F5VE was a great rebrand, but the lack of follow up after this first album release is... not instilling confidence at the moment.
Due to F5VE's schedule, iScream haven't promoted or performed much if at all this year. The trio had two digital singles, and Yuna and Hinata got an acting gig. Lucky2 seems to be doing okay given their current audience and expectations. Sweet Revenge is very much on the rocks. They were in development from 2019 to 2024, but only debuted last year. They had on success with 'Mu-chu', but don't seem to have capitalized on that or gained a stable enough fanbase to really secure their continued success. Girls2 is not looking great either at the moment. Ran left in 2023, and joined ME:I in 2024. Now Toa has stated she's leaving Girls2 in order to participate in the LDH Girls Battle. There's no way to say this nicely, but it's just not a great look for Girls2. Loosing two members to audition programs just makes it feel like Girls2 is a sinking ship and that's just not true.
Not to mention Toa's situation is kinda a lose-lose no matter what she does. If she auditions and makes it - fans will claim it was rigged. They'll claim she's just copying Ran, etc. If she auditions and DOESN'T make it, it'll look bad for Girls2, EXPG, etc. She has modeling to fall back on, but it's not something she'll be able to just brush off career-wise. I don't blame her for wanting to pursue things beyond Girls2 but I don't think LDH really thought through the implications of her doing so.
It looks a bit better for Momo former No No Girls participant, and Coiro whose a dancer from THE DANCE DAY - a Japanese special highlight program. TL;DR - if you want updates on this check here: https://x.com/ldh_girlsbattle
I will be watching, but I just don't feel right about the whole thing. It's a weird grey zone of stuff.
