Thank the Gods the great dragon never reappeared, what a blow it'd have been...both Camelot and Arthur, because killing a dragon is big thing, especially one who harmed their city so much, imagine them seeing the Dragon again and thinking their king lied to them, imagine Arthur... :(

i know for a fact i have made this post before but for me it's very important that bbc merlin is a pointless tragedy. it wouldn't be good (it's frequently not good anyway but it would be a lot further away from good) if it wasn't a pointless tragedy! it's simply not arthuriana if it doesn't go past the high point of the heroic/legendary/high medieval romance stuff and end with detailed rundowns of exactly how everybody got betrayed and died like that is what makes it real arthuriana to me and not just a silly show about a wizard
#'why did he die at the end! why did they make us miserable? why can't we have nice things!'#BECAUSE IT'S ARTHURIANA OKAY .that's what HAPPENS#if you're doing arthuriana you're not doing it right unless when you finally get to the end of this endless string of knight adventures#the main guy is like. dead and you're like well . what am i supposed to do now#like when i first read the great illustrated classic abridged king arthur in third grade and got to the end ofi t#and guinevere had been sent to a nunnery and half the nights had died in this battle or that one and merlin had been stuck in a cave#and then arthur dies and bedivere chucks his sword in a lake and then the book just ENDS#and i sat there consumed with emotions id never felt before. well i would've been disappointed if the end of bbc merlin had#NOT made me feel those emotions again#but it did. to me that is in fact its greatest success#merlin#q#like. dont get me wrong i like a fixfic as much as the next guy and in fact i plot them out all the time#but you cant DO that if the original material is. like. already happy#or meant to be

Immortal! Merlin Merwaine AU
They've known for a very long time that Merlin would outlive Gwaine, as soon as they realized he wasn't aging. Merlin put an aging spell on himself and for awhile they could pretend they were growing old together. In his last moments, all Gwaine wants is to remember Merlin as he truly was.
Whoever said immortality was a gift had clearly never experienced it.
#bbc merlin#merlin#merlin emrys#gwaine#merlin gwaine#merwaine#i swear i do draw things other than Merwaine#they just have a choke hold on me#also everyone be so proud of me#i was so brave here#i drew HANDS?#and for the first time in awhile attempted to age a character???#like not WELL but I did it#AND i spent literally two weeks on this#which is a lot for me#because im a weakling that uses to quick sketches that just take a few hours#also#fuck backgrounds#who needs em right?#anyway#i have more information about this if you want it#I have a lot of time to think of angst on my long drive to and from work#is it an AU if Merlin is actually immortal in canon?#idk

Are there any fae-like creatures in french myths?
I know about the story of a giant black wolf that terrorized France back in the day, but that’s all I can remember.
Legends and stories including wolves are in fact really widespread in european culture since middle age ! But yeah the most well known in France is the Beast of Gévaudan which was described as massive ! (and the one from Le petit chaperon rouge/Little red riding hood)
Concerning other creatures and fairies/faes in french legends and stories, we do have
Mélusine : fairies mentioned a bit everywhere in France, they are mostly described as women with a scaly tail lower body and are sometimes associated with mermaids or vouivres. (far from how they look like in genshin impact)
Vouivre : not to be mistaken with wyverns, vouivres are creatures described as snakes with bat wings, sometimes they are depicted having rear legs and wings (and they look very goofy like that imo). These creatures can be aquatic and in some descriptions, possess a big jewel on their forehead.
Tarasque : a creature from provencal legends, which lived in a swamp near Tarascon and terrorized and ate people. It's most popular description was of a big creature with a spiked turtle shell, six bear legs, horse ears, bull chest, lion head, a human face and a twisted tail. Legend says Ste. Marthe tamed the beast. (I swear they were just being attacked by bowser this is the same creature)
These are the one I depicted roughly in the pic above but there are many more creatures depending on the different regions of France ! (There's a lot of fairies and fantasy like creature in stories from bretagne/brittany) Some others that I find either fun or cool are :
Meneurs de loup : which translates to wolf leaders are people told to be able to talk to wolves and even transform into one, either because they are werewolves or they made a pact with the devil. (it's kinda giving spice and wolf vibes and I love that story sm)
Jambe crue/Came-cruse : Roaming in the Pyrénées at night, this thing is a single leg with an eye on the knee that eats people and runs very fast. (Idk why this one is so funny to me but oddly terrifying as well)
#french folklore#we also have fairies and mages that come from arthurian legends because i don't know how/why but some of the stories took place in france#it is said in France that Merlin used to live at some point in the forest of Brocéliande that is said to be either in brittany or normandy?#and there's that whole lancelot du lac thing as well#idk if I can choose a favorite creature in general french or not but kelpies are cool and rusalkas as well#medieval unicorns that look more like goats are dope as well#most man eating beings or creatures that use appearances to lure people are soo cool tbh#katsura otoko is an example from japanese folklore guy on the moon that feeds on your life essence the more you stare at the moon#if i recall it right..#Oh ! and Powerwolf did a song in french about beast of gevaudan ! if anyone likes power metal#the whole band’s aesthetic is priest werewolves idk why but hey half of it is right in my alley

My hot take is that if Merlin didn’t love Arthur, the Disir episode would have still gone exactly the same.
#he didn’t do it strictly because arthur’s his friend. he believes in the prophecies.#kilgharrah literally instructed him to prevent mordred from killing arthur to fulfill the prophecies (long-term solution vs. easy out)#how many times has merlin tried to interfere only for shit to down spiral? look at 4x03. or even merlin saving morgana’s life in 2x12#but also. most importantly. merlin’s opinion is not the ultimate decider on this. arthur is the one whose opinion actually counts here#and frankly he made his decision here without any convincing from merlin#merlin did not provide any real argument or counterargument to arthur’s points#arthur only did it because he believed it was right (or rather it’s easier for him to believe that magic corrupts people)#like genuinely. rewatch the scene. merlin did not provide any reasons for his stance. he just answers ‘no’ to a ‘yes or no’ question#arthur could have easily acquiesced to the disir#merlin missed an opportunity to attempt to convince arthur otherwise sure but arthur’s shown to ignore merlin if he thinks it’s the right#thing to do (think back to 5x01 for example)#genuinely merlin does not make a difference here. he’s just a witness who has the misfortune of knowing the possible outcomes#both the favorable and destructive#with a penchant for blaming himself#merlin emrys#arthur pendragon#merlin and arthur#merlin meta#my meta#bbc merlin

random merlin moment that lives rent free in my head: when those bandits who killed the knights to impersonate them made merlin move their baggage around the bed implying they were supposed to share it...
... just for them to not be seen sharing the bed (only one of then was using it at night, the other one just spawns in the room in the next scene 💀), so I'm choosing to believe the knights (dead, unfortunately) were supposed to be sharing it
#merlin#bbc merlin#merlin bbc#i believe its the first episode with gwaine in it which is season 3 ep 4#wow merlin and its queerbaiting n bury the gays again right 🙄🙄🙄 (IT'S A JOKE)#but srlsly what did they mean??? like one of them makes merlin move their things on the other side of the bed bc it will be in his way#just for another one to say now it's going to be in HIS way. which is on the other side of the bed. ?????

unpopular opinion but I think they should've let Gwen cheat out of her own free will
#no one ever finds out she was enchanted#and that's tragic in its own way and a valid narrative choice I guess#but it was a last minute addition#it's entirely for the benefit of the viewers so they can go 'oh she's not a bad person'#but good people do fucked up things sometimes!! even merlin!#what if she WAS a good person AND she did choose to kiss lancelot#because he was her first love and she thought he was dead and then he was alive#and right in front of her#and she couldn't think straight#I mean have you seen santiago cabrera?#let a girl cheat is all I'm saying#at least leave her some agency#merlin#gwencelot#unpopular opinions

Merlin but Merlin loses it when Arthur dies and instinctively starts a time loop and every time Arthur dies it automatically resets...for angst purposes it could stay tragic..no matter what he does to change the past kilgharra was right. no one can change their destiny nor can they escape it. or by starting this time loop at all he's doing is preventing the rise of the once and future king so by staving off Arthur's death he's actually preventing anyone from ever really living again. a never ending story with one character aware of the narrative but powerless to change it. a puppet with a brain but no autonomy to put it to use. A tragedy of his own making instead the one prophesized
#so that it doesn't work on the first try maybe morgana remembers and interferes or#maybe future Merlin is a sort of apparition that can only act if his old body lets him. he talks to past him like a ghost or demon even#so what he's saying directly contradicts kilgharra or gaius so present merlin probably distrusts him like crazy#merlin becomes another old annoying person in his own ear#who he doesn't even know if he can trust#OR he ends up sending arthur back by accident and arthur is in the past trying to fix shit#and this CHANGES something because now there's warnings of a great ending of all things coming for Camelot and by extension albion#and arthur knowing about Merlin's powers after keeping his knowledge to himself (cos he died RIGHT after learning about the magic)#finally understands the burden merlin had without having to try and understand based on Merlin's summary of an explanation alone#he understands morgana and mordred even nimueh like he GETS it gets it#anyway time goes on canon events are rewritten and the 'great evil' rips a giant hole in space and time and it turns out#future merlin was the cause. because he was smashing alternate realities to pieces looking for arthur is desperation#not knowing where the hell he even sent him breaking any known laws of time and space and reality consequences be damned#arthur cannot kill merlin. he cannot do it. not even for Camelot#so this can be angsty too like merlin loses himself completely in the search for arthur (paralleling the og timeline where Merlin ends up#singularly focused on Arthur's safety instead of his true mission)#and it literally swallows him and their entire known world up#or they get through to him. arthur AND past merlin. seeing that past him was able to diverge from the set path. live more for himself#than just arthur or for the sake of camelot be a PERSON outside of that. and have knowledge that he DID change arthur's mind.#not just as a useless deathbed confession but as something that actively changed and SAVED albion redeemed him of the mistakes he made and#proved that arthur is the man the KING he told every antagonist he was#future merlin sacrifices himself to destroy the black hole he made and it's like that future never even was.#just a bad nightmare you can't really remember.#just thinking about Merlin god bless#bbc merlin#fic ideas

IDK how much you know about D&D, I just want to put this out there bc it's hilarious to me.
Throughout the whole show, Merlin is called a warlock, and is the only one called that, but there's no explanation given as to why.
In D&D, a warlock gets their power from their patron, sometimes a god. And one of the gods in the D&D pantheon?
Balinor.
👀
what
#idk whether to laugh or scream#my knowledge of d&d is very small but i did know that warlocks are similar to clerics in that they both have patrons (that’s it tho right?)#but i never put much thought into Merlin’s title as warlock lol#and idk what’s more hilarious: bbc unintentionally having Merlin’s dad be his magic patron or bbc intentionally doing so lmao#like if it WAS intentional then it was subtle and prob only an Easter egg for themselves????#wait i lied i think it’s more hilarious for it being unintentional#even funnier if none of them played d&d and searched up Balinor and a definition of warlock and thought ‘yeah I’ll use that’ 😂#But imagine merlin post-series believing that his conversations with his dad is like a ghost thing. Like just him finding the most magic-y#place and communing with the dead and having fun father/son bonding time bc it’s what he deserves BUT NOPE ITS BC HIS DAD IS HIS PATRON LOL#even better: Balinor doesn’t know he also thinks it like a dragonlord thing to have a ghostly connection or some shit#idk this is funny to me#bbc merlin#merlin emrys#just another thing on the list if isleldir to geek about after merlin tells him (i think i spelled his name wrong :( )#asks

Gods but the way people think Arthur was stupid, trusting Agrvaine so much, first, Agravaine was a manipulative bastard, who came just after Uther died, a time when Arthur sorely needed parental support, seeing as his Father died and in a way, his whole family was gone. Mother, already dead, father, his king, dead, his sister betrayed him, forgive him for thinking, someone who was his last link to his mother, who was manipulating him on daily basis into thinking that he's the only one who had good intentions and cared for him. At a time, when he was most vulnerable. Forgive him for thinking that person won't betray him. Forgive him for thinking he had little of his family left. Forgivr him for thinking, even after all that has happened he was still loved by someone of his family.
Gods but I hate agravaine more than Uther, more than Morgana, more than any other villain. The way he manipulated Arthur, Gods, that's legit breaking the whole man, I wonder how Arthur managed to trust people after such deepest betrayal. Nobody talks about it,
But to think even after all of this, he still accepted Merlin and loved him so much!
#Naah man Arthur is too brave#I'd have let go every connection after Agravaine#Turned into something bitter#Too good man#bbc merlin#bbc arthur#arthur pendragon#King Arthur#Bbcm#Merlin BBC#Agravaine#BBC aggravaine#?#What's the right spelling?#Who cares#Silmy bastard#I hope uther did one good thing while he was alive#And it was because of him Agravaine didn't come while uther lived#Foook him#Fuck him

if they do make new merlin content, what do you want it to be?? a new season or a reboot?? modern merlin and arthur just appearing at the lake?? reincarnation?
deeply seggsy ask to just hit me with completely out of the blue bestie. but i must confess: the character i am least invested in in merlin is……..merlin. the characters i MUST see again would be gawain, morgana, and gwen
so i’d probably go for reincarnation of everyone in the modern day (or in the future! merlin IN SPACE) with old man merlin who has been living and waiting all that time. they’d be facing some threat which has caused them all to come back, and it would address the fact that the prophecy Was Not Fulfilled the first time
#merlin#a merlin reboot for me would center around morgana#how she was right and how she was wronged#and yes some redemption there too i GUESS if i HAVE to admit that she did some evil things. like twice#she did evil things exactly twice#i have some ideas floating around about how i’d do this#and yeah new characters based on unused characters from the legends i’d introduce#but at the end of the day a reboot under my power would not be about merlin so at this point just create a whole new show lmao#also i’m sorry but i have no interest in merthur sorry#actually now i’m thinking about this a mix of reincarnation#old man merlin#and the people who died in the final episode just walking out of the lake as if it was yesterday#would be Real Fun#still in space tho#arthur is the once and future king so set it in the future

Begging you all to watch the show without the m•rthur lens, because all sense of who these characters even are has been lost here.
#bbc merlin#merlin meta#tag meta#my meta#fandom critical#arthur critical#woobify much?#you will all just see whatever you wanna see huh. even if it is this disturbing. even if it is this dehumanizing. and all of it romanticized#also arthur doesn’t trust too much. or else maybe he’d legalize magic 🤪 his trust clearly doesn’t extend to the people he’s oppressing#arthur’s problem is nepotism! his problem is that he always trusts what is most comfortable for him to believe!#and most of the time he only looks as far as he is affected on a personal level!#he cares if someone /shows/ him the effects but it’s as gwen says… he shouldn’t need someone to hold his hand through being a decent person.#he’s not a child. and as prince he is supposed to have an even greater responsibility in this area.#anyways arthur has absolutely disagreed with people he trusts and stood his ground when he thinks it’s right. he has a mind of his own.#if he believed that his actions were truly wrong then he simply wouldn’t do them. we have seen this in action.#and this isn’t even touching on the merlin side of things. merlin did not cause arthur’s death.#you can scream it all you want but arthur’s bigotry is his alone. he chooses to lean into it again and again. arthur always has a choice.#it’s not that merlin didn’t ‘do enough’ to ‘fix’ him. wiping clean any accountability for arthur and putting it all on merlin’s shoulders#simply because merlin is one of those oppressed people and so ‘knows better’ (arthur already knows that magic isn’t inherently harmful-#-he chooses to believe that it corrupts people because it’s an easier guilt-free explanation)#…blaming merlin for arthur’s preference towards anti-magic sentiment is sick. arthur and merlin are their own individual people.#merlin is loyal to arthur because he sees his potential for the goodness that will unite albion and give his people a future.#arthur is his only hope. he’s battling tooth and nail with all these prophecies. ffs.#you cannot understand this series or these characters or their relationship dynamics in any way that matters#without first recognizing them as individuals and as people. people with different values motives approaches etc.#also the fact merlin is arthur’s servant and ‘happy’ to deal with his classism is inextricable from this#tw eye sore#tw hypnosis#tw unreality#tw delusion bait

if i were trying to stop arthur from killing his dad, i simply wouldn't blame magic. rip to merlin's dreams of magic being legal in camelot but i'm different
#'it's not honorable arthur' 'do you really want to start your reign as king with blood on your hands arthur'#<- like that would have worked idk#we could've talked him down other ways. dammit to hell#merlin's first big fuck up. ohhhh he betrayed himself#bbc merlin#even gaius tells him he did the right thing as if merlin didn't literally set back progress likeeeee fuck off
