Thank the Gods the great dragon never reappeared, what a blow it'd have been...both Camelot and Arthur, because killing a dragon is big thing, especially one who harmed their city so much, imagine them seeing the Dragon again and thinking their king lied to them, imagine Arthur... :(

i know for a fact i have made this post before but for me it's very important that bbc merlin is a pointless tragedy. it wouldn't be good (it's frequently not good anyway but it would be a lot further away from good) if it wasn't a pointless tragedy! it's simply not arthuriana if it doesn't go past the high point of the heroic/legendary/high medieval romance stuff and end with detailed rundowns of exactly how everybody got betrayed and died like that is what makes it real arthuriana to me and not just a silly show about a wizard

Are there any fae-like creatures in french myths?
I know about the story of a giant black wolf that terrorized France back in the day, but that’s all I can remember.
Legends and stories including wolves are in fact really widespread in european culture since middle age ! But yeah the most well known in France is the Beast of Gévaudan which was described as massive ! (and the one from Le petit chaperon rouge/Little red riding hood)
Tumblr media
Concerning other creatures and fairies/faes in french legends and stories, we do have
Mélusine : fairies mentioned a bit everywhere in France, they are mostly described as women with a scaly tail lower body and are sometimes associated with mermaids or vouivres. (far from how they look like in genshin impact)
Vouivre : not to be mistaken with wyverns, vouivres are creatures described as snakes with bat wings, sometimes they are depicted having rear legs and wings (and they look very goofy like that imo). These creatures can be aquatic and in some descriptions, possess a big jewel on their forehead.
Tarasque : a creature from provencal legends, which lived in a swamp near Tarascon and terrorized and ate people. It's most popular description was of a big creature with a spiked turtle shell, six bear legs, horse ears, bull chest, lion head, a human face and a twisted tail. Legend says Ste. Marthe tamed the beast. (I swear they were just being attacked by bowser this is the same creature)
These are the one I depicted roughly in the pic above but there are many more creatures depending on the different regions of France ! (There's a lot of fairies and fantasy like creature in stories from bretagne/brittany) Some others that I find either fun or cool are :
Meneurs de loup : which translates to wolf leaders are people told to be able to talk to wolves and even transform into one, either because they are werewolves or they made a pact with the devil. (it's kinda giving spice and wolf vibes and I love that story sm)
Jambe crue/Came-cruse : Roaming in the Pyrénées at night, this thing is a single leg with an eye on the knee that eats people and runs very fast. (Idk why this one is so funny to me but oddly terrifying as well)

My hot take is that if Merlin didn’t love Arthur, the Disir episode would have still gone exactly the same.

Consider: Arthur keeping his word about making peace with the Druids (*side-eyes BBC*) and the next time they come across one of those small shrines, he's a lil uncomfy still but is doing his best like, "what's this one for? Should we go around or...?" Because this one isn't as subtly creepy as the last one, there are no "def haunted" vibes, it's just a kind of rough cairn of stacked stone and branches, and it's got flowers all over it, candle stubs and incense sticks, little jars of honeycomb, sweetmeats, preserves, etc.
And it's Percival (hc he was raised in a Druid camp, even if he doesn't have magic) is like, "No, it's fine, this one is for Emrys."
Cue Arthur asking about Emrys, and Percival explaining he's supposedly the living son of the Triple Goddess, born to heal the wounds of the Old Religion (he's tactful enough to not mention who made those wounds *coughcough*kingcunt*cough*) and the offerings are made to show kindness and peace, and to aid him in his duty (sure enough, those flowers and herbs are all medicinal).
"Why's it so important to keep him happy?" It's Gwaine who asks, irreverent and curious.
And Percival tells them the story of the High Priestess Nimueh, who tried to turn her power against Emrys's through the magic of life and death. So Emrys created a great storm over the Isle of the Blessed and called down the wrath of rain and lightning to unmake her.
They're all so absorbed in storytelling that nobody notices Merlin sitting off to the side and sweating like a hooker talking to a beat cop.
-
Bonus points if Merlin sneaks over to take some of the offerings, against his better judgement bc he should not be encouraging this but he's got a killer sweet tooth and nobody in Camelot can make decent sweetmeats, apparently, and some of these herbs are pretty rare.
Double bonus if Percival or Elyan sees him do it and are like, "bro you gon be so cursed," and Merlin doesn't know how to explain that no he's not sacrilegious, these are for him, they're offerings, they were offered, and not entirely realising he's being paid the magical equivalent of ye olde protection racket.
*also side-eyes bbc* yeah...this would have been awesome to have...excuse me while i go sharpen my knives, completely unrelated to this ask i assure you

random merlin moment that lives rent free in my head: when those bandits who killed the knights to impersonate them made merlin move their baggage around the bed implying they were supposed to share it...
... just for them to not be seen sharing the bed (only one of then was using it at night, the other one just spawns in the room in the next scene 💀), so I'm choosing to believe the knights (dead, unfortunately) were supposed to be sharing it

Merlin realizing that if he'd listened kilgarrah half of his future problems could've been solved in s1
Tumblr media
but he didn't and now things are getting so much better and he's no assassin and did the right thing by not listening him
Tumblr media
But Arthur and every single person he cared about died or suffered for it

Merlin but Merlin loses it when Arthur dies and instinctively starts a time loop and every time Arthur dies it automatically resets...for angst purposes it could stay tragic..no matter what he does to change the past kilgharra was right. no one can change their destiny nor can they escape it. or by starting this time loop at all he's doing is preventing the rise of the once and future king so by staving off Arthur's death he's actually preventing anyone from ever really living again. a never ending story with one character aware of the narrative but powerless to change it. a puppet with a brain but no autonomy to put it to use. A tragedy of his own making instead the one prophesized
#so that it doesn't work on the first try maybe morgana remembers and interferes or#maybe future Merlin is a sort of apparition that can only act if his old body lets him. he talks to past him like a ghost or demon even#so what he's saying directly contradicts kilgharra or gaius so present merlin probably distrusts him like crazy#merlin becomes another old annoying person in his own ear#who he doesn't even know if he can trust#OR he ends up sending arthur back by accident and arthur is in the past trying to fix shit#and this CHANGES something because now there's warnings of a great ending of all things coming for Camelot and by extension albion#and arthur knowing about Merlin's powers after keeping his knowledge to himself (cos he died RIGHT after learning about the magic)#finally understands the burden merlin had without having to try and understand based on Merlin's summary of an explanation alone#he understands morgana and mordred even nimueh like he GETS it gets it#anyway time goes on canon events are rewritten and the 'great evil' rips a giant hole in space and time and it turns out#future merlin was the cause. because he was smashing alternate realities to pieces looking for arthur is desperation#not knowing where the hell he even sent him breaking any known laws of time and space and reality consequences be damned#arthur cannot kill merlin. he cannot do it. not even for Camelot#so this can be angsty too like merlin loses himself completely in the search for arthur (paralleling the og timeline where Merlin ends up#singularly focused on Arthur's safety instead of his true mission)#and it literally swallows him and their entire known world up#or they get through to him. arthur AND past merlin. seeing that past him was able to diverge from the set path. live more for himself#than just arthur or for the sake of camelot be a PERSON outside of that. and have knowledge that he DID change arthur's mind.#not just as a useless deathbed confession but as something that actively changed and SAVED albion redeemed him of the mistakes he made and#proved that arthur is the man the KING he told every antagonist he was#future merlin sacrifices himself to destroy the black hole he made and it's like that future never even was.#just a bad nightmare you can't really remember.#just thinking about Merlin god bless#bbc merlin#fic ideas

Gods but the way people think Arthur was stupid, trusting Agrvaine so much, first, Agravaine was a manipulative bastard, who came just after Uther died, a time when Arthur sorely needed parental support, seeing as his Father died and in a way, his whole family was gone. Mother, already dead, father, his king, dead, his sister betrayed him, forgive him for thinking, someone who was his last link to his mother, who was manipulating him on daily basis into thinking that he's the only one who had good intentions and cared for him. At a time, when he was most vulnerable. Forgive him for thinking that person won't betray him. Forgive him for thinking he had little of his family left. Forgivr him for thinking, even after all that has happened he was still loved by someone of his family.
Gods but I hate agravaine more than Uther, more than Morgana, more than any other villain. The way he manipulated Arthur, Gods, that's legit breaking the whole man, I wonder how Arthur managed to trust people after such deepest betrayal. Nobody talks about it,
But to think even after all of this, he still accepted Merlin and loved him so much!

if they do make new merlin content, what do you want it to be?? a new season or a reboot?? modern merlin and arthur just appearing at the lake?? reincarnation?
deeply seggsy ask to just hit me with completely out of the blue bestie. but i must confess: the character i am least invested in in merlin is……..merlin. the characters i MUST see again would be gawain, morgana, and gwen
so i’d probably go for reincarnation of everyone in the modern day (or in the future! merlin IN SPACE) with old man merlin who has been living and waiting all that time. they’d be facing some threat which has caused them all to come back, and it would address the fact that the prophecy Was Not Fulfilled the first time

Begging you all to watch the show without the m•rthur lens, because all sense of who these characters even are has been lost here.
#bbc merlin#merlin meta#tag meta#my meta#fandom critical#arthur critical#woobify much?#you will all just see whatever you wanna see huh. even if it is this disturbing. even if it is this dehumanizing. and all of it romanticized#also arthur doesn’t trust too much. or else maybe he’d legalize magic 🤪 his trust clearly doesn’t extend to the people he’s oppressing#arthur’s problem is nepotism! his problem is that he always trusts what is most comfortable for him to believe!#and most of the time he only looks as far as he is affected on a personal level!#he cares if someone /shows/ him the effects but it’s as gwen says… he shouldn’t need someone to hold his hand through being a decent person.#he’s not a child. and as prince he is supposed to have an even greater responsibility in this area.#anyways arthur has absolutely disagreed with people he trusts and stood his ground when he thinks it’s right. he has a mind of his own.#if he believed that his actions were truly wrong then he simply wouldn’t do them. we have seen this in action.#and this isn’t even touching on the merlin side of things. merlin did not cause arthur’s death.#you can scream it all you want but arthur’s bigotry is his alone. he chooses to lean into it again and again. arthur always has a choice.#it’s not that merlin didn’t ‘do enough’ to ‘fix’ him. wiping clean any accountability for arthur and putting it all on merlin’s shoulders#simply because merlin is one of those oppressed people and so ‘knows better’ (arthur already knows that magic isn’t inherently harmful-#-he chooses to believe that it corrupts people because it’s an easier guilt-free explanation)#…blaming merlin for arthur’s preference towards anti-magic sentiment is sick. arthur and merlin are their own individual people.#merlin is loyal to arthur because he sees his potential for the goodness that will unite albion and give his people a future.#arthur is his only hope. he’s battling tooth and nail with all these prophecies. ffs.#you cannot understand this series or these characters or their relationship dynamics in any way that matters#without first recognizing them as individuals and as people. people with different values motives approaches etc.#also the fact merlin is arthur’s servant and ‘happy’ to deal with his classism is inextricable from this#tw eye sore#tw hypnosis#tw unreality#tw delusion bait

IDK how much you know about D&D, I just want to put this out there bc it's hilarious to me.
Throughout the whole show, Merlin is called a warlock, and is the only one called that, but there's no explanation given as to why.
In D&D, a warlock gets their power from their patron, sometimes a god. And one of the gods in the D&D pantheon?
Balinor.
