The Essential Guide to Assassin Fantasy Tropes
So, you’ve met the colourful ensemble of assassins in the realm of fantasy literature. Now let’s talk about the tropes that make these deadly darlings as predictable as a soap opera plot twist. You might think assassins are all about shock value, but let’s be honest—they’re as full of clichés as a politician’s promise. The Untraceable Poison The quintessential tool for anyone wanting to…

Not so explicitly thinking about that but now I am. 😭 Also, I think it's so interesting how Izzy as a mentor/father figure has come up via David Jenkins and accordingly fan analysis. Ed's dad was obviously his original attachment disturbance/trauma and Hornigold I think is undisputably an actual father figure (where Ed gained even MORE trauma, learned what being a pirate and captain was, where he eventually apparently fratboy-style trauma-bonded with crewmates like Calico Jack) but I really don't see Izzy as a "father figure" based on what we see of their relationship. I think the TRANSFERENCE is there but very different dynamics from the first two.
The idea of transference through a trauma-lens is what really makes sense of the mechanics of Ed & Izzy's relationship, in my opinion. Ed technically holds more power in the relationship as the boss, and Ed & Izzy were friends and maybe even equals at points in their past. But Izzy's demeanor and treatment of Ed really REMINDS Ed of his father/Hornigold and brings up those old feelings (if even subconsciously) and that's what's REALLY triggering for him. We see this in Stede with the Badmintons' verbal/emotional abuse paralleling his father's as well. And I don't see people saying the Badmintons were "father figures" to Stede.
Transference is also why when Ed really starts letting loose on Izzy with violence, in his Kraken Era, I think Ed is partially (A) giving Izzy what he asked for and it backfires on Izzy spectacularly AND (B) Izzy has triggered Ed badly enough (in the wake of a break-up that has already predisposed Ed to be heartbroken and vulnerable and struggling with his identity more than ever and absolutely REELING emotionally) that he's become a "surrogate" father of sorts, through transference, that he finally has the power to fight back against. Izzy has opened the door for all that anger at his father and Hornigold (and himself) to really come out, and I think that projection comes on top of the very real anger Ed feels toward Izzy for his tangible and emotional betrayals. But, in reality, given their ACTUAL power dynamic, Ed is really just beating up on Izzy, who doesn't fight back. To Ed, in pure despair and self-hatred and survival mode and emotional dysregulation, feeling like he has zero access to (doesn't even feel like he DESERVES) emotional safety and comfort, however, I think he really may be seeing it as protecting himself from Izzy's original threats because he just feels SO emotionally unsafe and puts up that wall of numbness, and violence, and indifference to hide it. (Then ultimately gives up and starts goading the crew to put him out of his misery.) BUT Izzy there becomes a sort of placeholder for abusive father figures from Ed's past because Izzy's treatment of him was awful and made Ed FEEL similarly, not because Ed actually sees him as a father. Hence, "I loved you the best I could," given those circumstances.
I don't really see Izzy as Ed's "mentor" figure either. I think, thematically for the show, he kind of falls into that archetype because it's one of the closest tropes available but it doesn't capture the full nuance of the complexity of their relationship at all. Like I've said before (agreeing wholeheartedly with another one of @asneakyfox's posts on the matter), I truly TRULY believe Stede saying "Blackbeard said you taught him everything he knows" is 100% Stede kissing ass to get pirate skill lessons and I don't think Ed ever told him anything like that at all. Maybe that he's learned some things from Izzy, sure, but I'm positive nothing about teaching him "everything he knows" ever fell out of Ed's mouth. As others have pointed out too (definitely saw @stedebonnetsbignaturals's comment in the tags), Izzy says he was "honored to work for the great Blackbeard" indicating the Ed was already at his peak before Izzy became his first mate, so..."mentor"...? No.
Izzy is ultimately the second half of Blackbeard (keeping Ed tethered to the role beyond when he grew so tired of it) and, while giving Ed permission to "just be Ed" may come off as father or mentor-like without full context, it doesn't ring true to actually describe his role in their dynamic. Izzy was Ed's friend, first mate, second half of the Blackbeard role/persona, and per Ed's words, a part of his "family." They were also VERY unhealthily/toxicly enmeshed and co-dependent, a dynamic that doesn't begin to resolve itself until they fully split apart emotionally post-gravy basket and develop more as individuals. Izzy finally sets Ed free to be himself after repeatedly dragging him down into a role he'd grown to really despise.
So we see Izzy very purposefully paralleled to Ed's dad and Hornigold (and even Pop-pop I guess??) but he's overall really a very unique figure in Ed's life compared to all the others.
you ever think about how the felix story was thrown into 2x03 just to make it clear that harming people ed cares about in front of him while ed has to watch is something all three of ed's shitty father figures have done?
have you ever tried rewatching 1x06 - not just the flashbacks to ed's childhood but also specifically the duel scene right afterward, where izzy is about to kill stede and ed just sort of freezes up strangely and stands there looking away kind of stimming - with that in mind?

Captain Marvel being a Girl Dad (Raven)
Captain Marvel should have a mentor/dad brotherly relationship with Raven, Zatanna and any of the Wonder fam. In this Essay, I will-
Actually I will. Starting off with Raven.
She deserves a magic mentor and non evil father figure in her life. Swoops in Cap who offers to transfer Trigon to the Rock of Eternity / the Monster Lands, both able to hold Trigon his end of demonic life.
Are you telling me Raven would see this happy Pitbull of a man and not get attached? Are you also telling me Billy wouldn’t jump at the chance to show her the Rock? Lend her books from the Library of the Rock, which might as well be the magical Library of Alexandria, at the first hint of interest?
Although Billy would see it as having friend to talk about his special interest (magic) and sharing it with them. Raven sees is as a new mentor figure.
Captain: And this book is one of my absolute favourites (it’s a book given to a past champion and remembers it like it’s his own)
Raven: Thanks Dad
Captain, is used to people calling him dad (dad Marvel au): anytime 😁😁😁
Raven, inwardly: this confirms it, I have a new dad 🥳
which I’m pretty sure would have this
Captain, noticing a really good book but it’s in a forgotten language: do you want me to read this book to you?
Raven, who never had a bed time story in her life: I’m winning
Also this
Captain: oh no, I lost my (league communication device) phone
Raven, unashamed: sure
Phone rings: Dad, you’re my Dad! Wookie Wookie Wookie
The rest of the Titans:
Raven: smug
Captain: Thanks :)
If Billy gets an apartment from his Whiz Job, with a hidden portal he made to the Rock and it has spare rooms so he gives one to Raven, that’s their business
Dad Marvel AU: everyone fighting on who’s the favourite child
Raven: well at least I get to live with him
Everyone: …
Raven: And he reads to me, and cooks for me AND helps me with my extracurricular (magic training)
Everyone: *definetely not crying*
Bonus:
Beast Boy is like a son-in-law that turns son figure. Or is he a son figure turned son-in-law?
Beast Boy: I can turn into a tiger
Marvel: Welcome to the family
Beast Boy:
Beast Boy, tearing up: happy to be here
If this is before or after he started dating Raven, that’s up to you.
Bonus 2:
Captain Marvel and Raven meditating next to a magic waterfall cause Billy knew a good spot to help relax
Random explorer, who was searching for said waterfall for years cause it’s rumoured to have magic properties: I-
Takes a picture and captions “tracked down a site for seven months, took 3 months to find location and one more to get to it. This is what I fuckin find.” #Capesknowtoomuch #pleaseshareinfirmation and #gatekeepingisntheroic

I love the relationship between Ra’s and Tim in the Red Robin run because it reads fundamentally as an unrequited crush. Between an old man who is so rich he will never spend all his wealth, a man who is considered to be charming in the same way a snake is, a man who is more powerful than the majority of other villains just on the strength of his legacy alone.
And.
A seventeen-year-old boy who has not slept in three days since the last time someone drugged him, has not showered in three weeks unless you count being thrown into a river, has not cleaned his room since he was three and his parents still payed attention to him.
And when I tell you which one has the crush on the other, that’s it, that’s the ultimate punchline, DC may never reach these peaks of comedy ever again.

"The visual script [of Revenge of the Sith] shows the moment where 'burnt' Anakin is rescued by the Emperor—whose gesture echoes that of Obi-Wan touching Luke's forehead in Episode IV."
Tumblr media
So the sheer number of allusions between Lucas's work on the prequels and the original trilogy is so satisfying to me. His whole philosophy of "it's like poetry, it rhymes," influenced the prequels on both a macro- and micro- scale. From mirroring themes and large structural choices, to tiny visual beats like this. The prequels are in open dialogue with the originals, and imho it's different from how the Force Awakens recycled and reused story beats, it's not mere reference out of nostalgia. It's very intentional and the meaningful connections that improve both sides of the conversation by virtue of the link.

Had this fun ask and tbh had more fun considering it more in the Ashwinder AU I did during MCtober. Also I hadn’t thought of anything outside the regular game canon of everyone babying you all the time
Ashwinder AU - he’d definitely prank Rookwood and be such a wind-up merchant
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though they’d be wary, he still has his violent tendencies that would’ve otherwise had been tempered and morality instilled by Fig and Hogwarts professors and friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Corrupted ancient magic user and volatile mood swings the Ashwinder’s can put up with a few pranks I’m sure

Hey! I was wondering if I could request Aventurine, Ratio and maybe Jiaoqiu with an S/O who has a little sister (like, let's say 7 years old) and just them interacting with her and being adorable?
In the Smallest Moments, We Find Our Light

Aventurine had never been particularly good with children. His life had been one of strategy, manipulation, and high-stakes gambles—none of which were qualities a child could appreciate. But when he found himself in the presence of his partner's little sister, a soft smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He wasn't sure why, but there was something about the way she looked at him with wide, curious eyes that made him feel both disarmed and strangely protective.
"Can you teach me how to play cards?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she fidgeted with the edge of her sleeve.
Aventurine chuckled, a sound that was both amused and warm. "Cards, huh?" he mused, flicking his earring absentmindedly. "Well, my dear, you're in luck. I am a master of games."
He motioned to a table, where he set up a small deck of cards. As he dealt the cards with an almost theatrical flair, the little girl watched in awe. "Now, here's the first rule," Aventurine began, his tone shifting from lighthearted to serious. "Life is a gamble, and every decision is a risk. But not all risks are worth taking."
The little girl blinked, processing his words with a furrowed brow. "So... you don't always win?"
He gave her a sly smile. "No, not always. But it's how you play the game that counts."
She thought about it for a moment, then grinned. "I think I'll win this time," she declared confidently, her small fingers holding up a card.
Aventurine's smile softened as he glanced at her. There was something about her optimism—her ability to approach the game with such pure determination—that reminded him of a time before he'd learned to guard his heart. He caught himself, quickly masking the thought with another playful comment.
"Careful, young one," he warned, "I'm a formidable opponent."
The game continued, but Aventurine found himself genuinely enjoying it—not because he was winning, but because for the first time in a long while, he wasn't calculating every move. Instead, he was simply… enjoying the moment.

Ratio had always considered himself a man of intellect, a man above the trivialities of childish things. His life was filled with books, studies, and research, and he never entertained the thought of interacting with children. But when his partner's little sister bounced into the room, a gleam of curiosity in her eyes, something strange stirred in him.
"Dr. Ratio!" she called, her small hands tugging at the sleeve of his vest. "Can you tell me a story?"
He looked at her, mildly annoyed by the interruption, yet his tone softened slightly. "A story?" he repeated. "What, precisely, is it that you wish to hear? A tale of wisdom? A recount of one of my brilliant discoveries?"
"Noooo!" she giggled, shaking her head. "I want a funny one!"
Ratio blinked, momentarily thrown off by her sheer innocence. His gaze shifted as he considered her request. "Funny...?" he muttered under his breath. "You wish for me to be 'funny'?"
"Yes! Please!"
For a moment, he stood there, his hands at his sides, pondering. Finally, after a dramatic pause, he sighed, relenting. "Very well. But understand this: humor is a delicate art, and my style may not be to your taste."
He cleared his throat and began, albeit in a scholarly manner, "Once, there was a very wise owl who—"
She interrupted with a delighted giggle. "Owl? Like your shoulders?" she pointed to his shoulder pieces shaped like owls.
Ratio's lips quirked up slightly. "Ah, yes, exactly. This owl was... let’s say, much like myself—blessed with an intellectual superiority far beyond that of any common bird." He paused dramatically. "However, one day, it made the mistake of—"
"Made a mistake?! A smart owl?!" she gasped, eyes wide with disbelief.
Ratio paused, realizing he had lost her attention. But when he looked down at her face, so innocent and full of wonder, he couldn't help but feel a small chuckle escape him.
He continued the story, weaving in absurdities and gentle humor, and as the little girl laughed uncontrollably at the owl's misadventures, Ratio found himself more relaxed than he'd ever been in her presence. Maybe, just maybe, there was something to this whole "funny" thing after all.

Jiaoqiu had always been a figure of quiet strength, an observer in the background, finding solace in the rhythm of his healing work. However, today, he found himself in a moment of unusual vulnerability as his partner's little sister gently tugged at his sleeve, her voice ringing with innocence.
"Jiaoqiu, can you help me?" Her small voice was filled with curiosity.
Jiaoqiu, who was blind, couldn't see her, but he could feel the gentle tug, and he could sense the slight excitement in her voice. He was used to navigating the world without sight, relying instead on sound, touch, and the subtle energies around him.
"Of course, my dear," he said softly, his voice calm and warm, though his thoughts always lingered on the futility of it all—the constant struggle between healing and death. Still, he couldn't turn away from someone in need, especially not a child. "What do you need help with?"
She placed something small and delicate into his hands, and he carefully cradled it. It was a flower, its petals soft and fragile, but its form was still unfamiliar to him without sight. His fingers traced its outline with practiced precision, and he could sense its delicate beauty despite not being able to see it.
"I think it needs medicine so it can be happy again," she said, her tone full of hope and innocence.
Jiaoqiu smiled gently, though the weight of his own internal struggles hung heavy on his heart. He knew all too well the fleeting nature of life. As his fingers moved over the flower, he focused on its pulse, the slight vibrations of energy it gave off. His expertise in alchemy and food-based medicine had honed his ability to sense the health of an object, living or otherwise, through touch.
"Sometimes, little one," he began softly, "healing is not about what we can see. It's about feeling what is needed, understanding what the heart of the matter truly is."
His hands moved to his pouch, where he kept various healing herbs and potions. He could sense the small vials through the slight metallic sounds of their contents shifting within, and he selected the one that he knew would provide the right remedy for the flower.
He poured a few drops of the potion onto the flower, his movements careful and precise. "Like this," he continued, as he gently cradled the flower in his hands, "healing isn't about making everything perfect. It's about giving something the chance to thrive, even if it's just for a while."
He handed the flower back to her, the slight tremor of her small hands against his own providing a sense of reassurance. "There. Now you must be patient. You must nurture it with care, just like you would any living thing."
The little girl hugged the flower close to her chest. "Thank you, Jiaoqiu! You're the best healer!"
Jiaoqiu's heart fluttered with a mix of tenderness and sorrow. In his mind, he knew that the flower, like the many souls he had tended to, might one day fade away. But for now, in this moment, he had done something good. Perhaps that was enough.
He listened to her soft footsteps as she skipped away, and for a brief moment, he allowed himself to let go of the burden that always weighed so heavily on his heart. The world might be full of pain, loss, and uncertainty, but moments like this—moments of connection—were what kept him moving forward.
Jiaoqiu smiled softly, feeling the cool breeze on his face and the warmth of the little girl’s gratitude filling the empty space inside of him. Healing, after all, wasn’t just about mending the body—it was about healing the heart, and sometimes, that was enough.

Damian was 10 when he was shipped off to his father.
He was 10 when he finally decided enough was enough, packed his stuff, called Mara, and the ball went rolling.
The moment Talia left the mansion, the DNA test confirmed, and Bruce emotionally compromised, did he finally move.
He'd stared his father down, felt nothing when he stood up and mild annoyance bloomed when his father asked– demanded– where he was going.
"You're a fool if you believe I will stay here." He spat, eyening the man in disdain.
It became very apparent that Damian wasn't what Bruce thought he'd be, what Talia thought he was.
"Your mother entrusted me with your safety–"
"I don't need protection. Mother wouldn't care if I stayed or not." He blinks. "Where is the cave? I wish to use the computer, I have people to contact."
Reluctantly, Bruce shows him the way, questions of who and why, and the plans he apparently had were asked.
Damian answers with vague wordings and enough open spaces for interpretation. Words greatest detective, he can figure it out himself without damian spelling it out for him.
When they do arrive in the batcave, Tim Drake— Robin— was sitting at the computer.
Huffing, Damian shoved the entire chair away from the table, taking its place and started typing.
"W— hey! What—? Who?" Tim looked between Bruce and Damian, despite being sleep deprived his eyes caught on the similarities, mouth dry and mind calculating.
"Does Dick know?" Is all he asks, leaning back and watching the younger boy work.
"Not yet."
A heavy sigh.
"Silence," the boy huffs, annoyed. "I'll have to make a call."
Glaring daggers, he pulls out a old burner phone, pressing the single number saved inside and waits.
"Damian."
"Hello, brother."
('Oh. Did he have another?' Tim wonders, watching Batman's face, blank like a paper sheet. Nothing. It feels like all his efforts of bringing the man back were just flushed.)
Or in simpler words:
Danyal al Ghul, the first successor of the demons head, born with his twin Athanasia al Ghul, to be the future of the league.
They were reborn with their former memories, stuck in place, constantly watched and trained. Manipulated. Weaponized.
All for a man playing immortal.
They'd only started planning when two more children came into the picture, Damian and Mara Al Ghul.
Danyal now Daniel "Danny" and Athanasia now Eleanor "Ellie" Nightingale took matters into their own hands and separated to take the kids in and end this.
End the league. End the cycle of whatever this, this cult is, and take over.
In many universes, Ra's al Ghul does not die, always returns, wielding his people like mere weapons.
In this universe, Danyal al Ghul is acknowledged as a traitor, killer of the Demons head and Older Brother, borderline father even, to his tiny brother Damian al Ghul.
In this universe, he raises Damian instead of Talia, shows him the cracks of this careful manipulated picture and listens when Ellie tells of her travels to this tiny child with a sad sad fate.
In this universe, Ellie takes in their tiny cousin, shielding her from the cruel eyes of a man not worthy. She trains her, shows her the ropes and takes her along when she leaves.
In this universe, Damian al Ghul and Mara al Ghul live a good live, protected by the twins of old souls and have a somewhat normal if not very complicated childhood.
