i think my most insane non-important mdzs conspiracy theory is that nie huisang could've done the whole plot against jin guangyao, could've avenged his brother's murder, could've become chief cultivator from exposing jin guangyou all WITHOUT bringing wei ying back to life through mo xaunyu. i truly think that bring wei ying back to life though mo xaunyu was just nie huisang really really wanting to play matchmaker after seeing lan zhan pine after this fucking dead idiot for over a decade. he knew since the cloud recess study arc that lan xhan had a 💫phat💫 crush on our sweet oblivious wei ying and has been trying to get them together the entire time but simply didn't have the means to do so until he became clan leader nie. this is his fun little side quest and he is having a great time with his results.

It’s the way that Lan Xichen could only see the good in Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue could only see the bad, and never fully acknowledge or accept the other half of jgy hence why things ended the way they did.

Cause the way those two both made sooo many excuses to justify their perspective of jgy, Lan Xichen always defending him and Nie Mingjue always accusing him.

Funny enough it was Nie Huaisang who saw both good and bad, and was the only one who accepted jgy. Even in his revenge he held jgy as an equal, almost tender in his destruction of jgy. The care he put in to kill this man is too much to say that Nie Huaisang didn’t still hold some type of love for his Yao-ge.

nhs and jgy are too much alike not to feel some type of way for each other. A twisted sense of respect and love and hatred.

Endlessly gutted by the fact that in a world only *slightly* different than the one he got, Meng Yao could have been one of the most righteous and good characters in all of MDZS instead of one of it's worst villains.

If *one* person had helped his mother, if *one* person had been more vocal about his inherent worth as a person instead of what he can do, if *one person* actually articulated and expressed their trust and love.

And it's *torture*, especially in a reread, to see how close he was to getting that and the consequences when he didn't.

AU where Meng Shi was just a bit more cynical and spent her hard-earned on buying Meng Yao study materials for the Imperial Examination instead of dodgy cultivation manuals. Cultivation is for his father to teach him, after all.
