I'm working on a fluff concept for a one-shot/short series of traffic life fics in a pirate setting where the events take place during winter. Check out what i have so far!:D
The Heart Foundation - kind-hearted bartenders of the seaside tavern, treating sailors to hot mulled wine at very low prices, providing free food and medicine to all in need, endearing them to every resident of Secretwood.
Gem & The Scotts - a wandering musical group known for their incredible talent in many coastal towns. Each year, locals eagerly await them at winter fairs, and the "Heart Foundation" tavern has a tradition of offering them free shots of spiced drinks every time they visit.
Roomies - a trio of seafaring friends traveling the world on their modest ship. Originally a duo of old friends, a third member, an avian working in the docks but aspiring to conquer the seas since childhood, later joined them.
Big Dogs - pirate friends, slightly eccentric guys, who are loved by Secretwood residents.
Mounders - a team of four friends sailing the seas on their ship "The Round Mound", earning them the nickname "mounders" in the port town where they return every winter for fairs and festivals.
Trader Scar's - a ship with a crew consisting of one person - Trader Scar, who sells a variety of trinkets from around the world. People eagerly await him at winter fairs in the port town, not just for the items for sale but also for his cheerful personality and funny jokes, despite him getting offended when people mention it aloud (Trader Scar's means a lot to him, even though there hasn't been any actual selling for a long time).
Also, there's Lizzie, a local resident of the town, Joel's wife, who lives in their small pumpkin-like roofed house.
And also there are Big B and Ren — locals of the town. Big B has a giant hole in his house.
All these people live in a tiny port town called Secretwood, named after the deity Secret Keeper, worshipped as long as locals can remember.
In Secretwood, every winter from December to late February, winter fairs and festivals take place. This tradition has been ongoing for a very long time, and over the years, local residents and people arriving in the city have formed a large circle of friends.

Friday Nights, by Autumn_leaf101
“A-Cheng there is someone I would like you to meet with this Friday. He is the successor to Lan Academies. I’ve spoken with his uncle and we shall see if you both are suitable for each other.” Said Yu-Jiang ZiYuan, with a tone of clarity and finality.
“Yes A-Niang” Having expected this he felt relieved to get it over with.
“The Lan Academies huh? The heirs are quite the handsome duo.” A cheeky Cangse Sanren pointed out. “Isn’t the younger, the pouty one you’re always talking about A-Xian?! Oh, and the older, he has the sweetest smile, doesn’t he?” She continued an excited rant, met with an equally excited Wei Wuxian.
As the conversation steered to the rumours of Jiang Cheng’s potential betrothed, he wanted to know what was being said but no amount of effort could help him concentrate. His only focus; convincing himself that a lifetime of neglect and passive-aggressive companionship wouldn’t be too bad, or maybe, just maybe he could love and be loved the way a husband and wife are meant to.

you can have the best of me, baby, by stiltonbasket
Twelve hours after Jiang Cheng and the others escape from Mount Muxi, Wei Wuxian risks wading into the lake and discovers that the underwater passage to the stream in the maple wood has been blocked behind the tortoise’s body.
“It’s sleeping right beside the opening,” he whispers, when he and Lan Zhan are safe in a tunnel of rock too narrow for the Xuanwu’s neck and head. “Judging by the current in the water, that passage was the only way out.”
Trapped in the Xuanwu's cave with no means of escape, Lan Wangji suggests a surprising course of action to strengthen himself and Wei Wuxian for battle: dual cultivation.
The session proves successful, but despite their best efforts, Wei Wuxian's golden core yields unexpected consequences for them both.
I'd Give You The Moon, by Teadrenched
Wei Wuxian is very smart, but you wouldn't think that if you saw him now, lost alone in the woods at night and being choked by a witch. Despite his predicament, all Wei Wuxian can think about is how pretty the witch looked, and that he didn't know boys were allowed to wear dresses (but after seeing Lan Wangji, definitely thinks more should)
OR
Wei Ying finds fem witch Lan Zhan in the woods and goes to bother him whenever Madame Yu has been a bit too much
Enough!, by Jeeny271196
Wei WuXian had enough of them blaming him for everything. Or say Wei WuXian snapped out!
Wei WuXian reacted differently after Lan Xichen blaming him for Lan Wangji's suffering at guangying temple. Which changed lot of things.
Explicit:
you'll find my heart on the mountainside, by lulu_kitty
After parting ways with Lan Wangji on the mountain path, Wei Wuxian takes some time to consider what it is that he wants with this new second chance at life.
The answer finds him coming back to Lan Wangji, his zhiji, but after they reunite and set forth to embark on their new life together, an unexpected surprise awaits them on their journey home.
Or, a post-canon CQL/Untamed getting together story: accidental baby acquisition addition.
The Communication Effect, by draechaeli
If only there was more communication, or the right kind then everything would be all right. Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi might be bad when it comes to talking to each other about the important things, but they are still leagues better then the older generation that use communication like swords: concealing, revealing, and striking as they please for their own gain. From apologies, to misunderstandings, to sieges, to rumours and gossip, to cold wars, to lies, to civil wars, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi navigate the world together once their brothers make sure they’re engaged before the classes at Cloud Recesses are finished.

Love in Red and Gold, by Kaytla
"If you're not happy," Wei Wuxian suddenly heard his own voice saying, not unlike an out of body experience, "you could always express an interest in me."
Lan Wangji's head snapped up, piercing Wei Wuxian with such an intense stare he scrambled to try and explain the words that had just tumbled uncontrollably out of his foolish mouth, wondering faintly if he was going to have any control over his errant tongue today.
"I mean - it's just a suggestion, Lan Zhan. If you've shown an interest in someone, there's less pressure to marry immediately, right?" Gods, what was he saying? His tongue felt like a lump of liver in his mouth, clumsy and unwieldy, but he just kept talking.

“What does it mean, that Wen Ruohan has all the Yin Iron?” Jiang Cheng asked, dragging himself up into a sitting position – her medicines must have worked quickly, because his ribs gave only a twinge when he moved.
Wen Qing settled down beside him, head bowed as she packed away her supplies, her shoulder brushing his arm when she moved. “It means that no one in the cultivation world can oppose him,” she whispered.

Truths Laid Bare For All, by Preludian_Staves
The betrothal letter comes in the Springtime with a Lan escort, changing how events happen in Wei Wuxian's life.
AKA Wangxian meets early before the Cloud Recesses lectures and slowly starts moderately sooner, some things change and others stay moderately the same. Plus WWX flourishing under the tutelage of the Lans when there isn't prickly Heir or his equally prickly mother lurking around that needs near constant appeasement and a truth serum is involved somewhere in the course of things.
If Plan A won't work, there's a Plan B!, by SplitGirl28
Since discovering the truth about his Dage's death, Nie Huaisang was pissed and dug into Jinlintai considering his brother's unusual hatred of Jin Guangyao that warranted investigation. He discovered schemes that also led to a former classmate's death, his best friend's cornering and murder via weaponized stupid idiots by the Jins...all to have access to Demonic Cultivation in Jin Guangshan's bid for power.
It was then he discovered through his spies that Mo Xuanyu, a boy who resembles Wei Wuxian except for eye shape befitting a Jin, and a rounder face, was yet another of Jin Guangshan's spawn. Taken to Jinlintai a year after his best friend's murder and made to research Demonic Cultivation as he had no aptitude for orthodoxy yet very proficient with it. He spent years befriending the boy on the sly...and made plans.
One won't give him his brother back even if he gets revenge...the second plan will get him what he wants at a huge cost. And this young boy will help him!

Medicine - Jim x fem!reader // Part Two
I miss Jim Mason and I can’t stop writing about him, i need help. This part is loosely inspired by Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys :)
You can read part One here.
Description: After a bonfire night welcoming (Y/N)’s new family in Palos Verdes, Jim and her found themselves enjoying each other more than they could admit.
Warnings: Mention of masturbation (both male and female), alcohol and drug abuse
Word count: 3.1k+
Tumblr media
“Honey, we’re going now” the voice of her mother rang over the sound of the waves. (Y/N) looked back behind her, her arms were cooped under her legs, desperately trying to keep her body heat close to her while the drawing turned into chatter. “Okay, cool! I’ll walk home in a bit” she responded, waving the woman goodbye. A few word were exchanged between her parents and she noticed her father pulling his spouse away, the both of them wishing her a good time.
A loud escaped the teenager’s lips as she looked back to Medina who was sitting in the sand next to her. Then her gaze fell upon the body of her sibling, sprawled on his back, a soft snore escaping his nose. The conversation picked up again as the flames burned down to embers.
The artist’s shivering body was not left unnoticed by her blonde friend while they discussed travelling plans. Waking up her twin who had falling asleep, she mumbled to him to go upstairs to finish his night in his own bed. “I don’t want to go in alone” he whimpered, his voice tangled with sleep. “Okay well let’s at least bring (Y/N) home, come on” her hands pulled his larger frame while he groggily.
Without asking anyone’s opinion, Medina hooked her fingers around Jim’s shoulder, peeling off the jacket from his back. “Hey, that’s mine” he jokingly whined noticing the quivering hands of their guest before the denim covered her small frame. Rubbing her arms quickly to help the cold dissipate. His twin just gave him a look as if to say “She has been freezing for the past 45 minutes”. They had always had that telepathic like connection and, more often than not, no words needed to be spoken. He shrugged it off as they made their way up the slope.
“Go up, I’ll take care of the fire”, he mumbled, practically jogging back to the embers. (Y/N) raised a curious eyebrows, looking back at the figure before sheepishly turning the way at the sound of his fly coming undone. “Well that’s one way to do it” the girls giggled as they climbed up the mound of sand.
Interest peaked again and the teenager looked back. She couldn’t see much from where she was but she could see the broad shoulders under his semi loose fitting white tee-shirt. She could assume the definition of his back and his arms. She could definitely see him buckling his belt and dashing back to them, pushing past them and jogging to the kitchen sink to wash his hands.
“At least, I didn’t have to remind him” said the Mason daughter as another giggle passed the new girl’s lips. She could see it again. The image of his tall frame as his back was facing them. She could also see the look in his eyes as they stared back at each other, the faintest bit of concern as he looked back at her. It only lasted half a second but his features were burned in her mind.
His gentle Roman nose, the definition of his cheekbones and his soft chin. His full upturned lips. His narrow, bright and very sad eyes.
Like a carbon copy, it was embedded in her head and the only thing that pulled her out of daydream was Medina gently pulling her towards the front of her house, readying herself to escort her home. Jim quickly joined them, quiet yet smiling. That was something else she could keep in her head. His smile.
Trying to keep some small talk on the way back, (Y/N) thanked the twins for not letting her get lost in the streets of Palos Verdes. Quicker than Jim and her had hoped, she noticed her house, and then she was due to give back the warm coat, hoping the faint smell of cigarette and body odour would linger on her skin.
But it was her scent that hung in the Sherpa and denim. Medina launched forward, embracing her new friend quickly. Her shy gaze met Jim’s and he offered her a soft smile, toothy this time. It felt like her heart skipped a beat as the blonde pulled from her arms.
Would it be appropriate for her to launch herself in his hug? No, it wouldn’t. Maybe he could just read her mind or maybe the look she gave him made her desperate. His arms snaked around her. It felt like butterflies erupted from his touch as his fingertips gently grazed the surface of her skin. Her hands rested awkwardly on his back and for a second, he was scared she could feel his halting breath staggering in his chest.
A silent queue pushed them apart and (Y/N) climbed the short flight of stairs before opening the door of her house, quickly waving the twins goodbye. She pressed her back to the front door after twisting the lock. He could still feel her hands nestled between his shoulder blades. She could still feel his fingertips grazing against her skin.
Like the lingering taste of a cigarette, they kept this reminder in the back of their minds as he mumbled to his sister on his way back while she considered asking her father if they lived close enough for his to count as the neighbor she had a crush on. She slumped on her bed after kicking her clothes off and wrapping herself in her pyjamas, ready for the night to take her.
The high pitch ringing of her alarm pulled Jim out of his slumber, his hand still tugged beneath his boxers, his digits still sticky from the events that transpired the night before, tangled around himself still. Cold sweat burst across his skin as the sudden realisation slapped him. He couldn't keep his mind still, all he could think about was the way (Y/N) crinkled her nose as she focused on her paper, how she kept on blowing her (Y/H/C) locks away from her eyes, how she smeared her lead on her forehead in a attempt to keep the strands at bay. But Medina had beaten him at rubbing it off in a fit of giggles.
The reminder of her soft face burned his lower stomach once more but before he could try and relief himself at the thought of the gentle girl, his twin barged in the room in a huff, turning off his alarm.
“Y-You should really knock next time, he blabbered, pulling the heavy duvet over part of his legs and chest in a poor attempt to cover up his own mess.
- Maybe you should turn off your alarm when it's blaring for 15 minutes straight! She defended herself, already dressed and nearly ready to go to school.
- Sorry, his raspy voice whispered, I just had a weird... night.
- I could hear you, Jimmy. You forgot some here, she pointed at the remnants staining his chin.”
Hiding her annoyance was not in the cards for Medina. Jim was the most charismatic one from the duo and now that she had finally managed to make a friend, she was livid at the idea that her twin would swoop in and take her away. She envied how easy it was for him to touch people and keep them around. She had a much different experience with bonding.
He quickly pulled himself together under the cold shower he chose to endure. Barely sinking in his bowl of cereal, he avoided the nosey questions his father was cooking him with. Yes, he had a good time. Yes, the “new girl” seemed nice. No, he didn't like her. A lie his sister could read through.
What was wrong with having a small crush on her? Was it the fact he his so called relationship with Heather had just ended? Or the fact that he promised himself he wouldn't let himself  like a girl as easily as he was finding himself right now. A little crush never hurt anyone though, right? He slipped his backpack and shoes on and grabbed his and his twin's bicycle and camped by the door while she sunk her feet in her sneakers.
And it only took him a minute for (Y/N)'s soft features to slip in his mind. If the feeling of her fingers pressed between his shoulder blades subsided and the soft fluttering of his heart did too, would it be so bad? If he told her that the only way he managed to pull himself to bad was to wear himself out while repeating the images of her in his mind. If he told her he thought he liked her, would he care to know if she thought she liked him too? Would she mind watching him kill himself slowly in drugs and alcohol?
Medina quickly made her way to her new classmate as soon as she could dismiss her brother. It looked like she had not had much sleep either but was it simply because she had retrieved her bed much later than usual or was it because she had participated in the same sort of activities she could hear her twin partake? Her gut clenched at the feeling of betrayal nesting in her stomach.
Despite her best efforts, (Y/N) could not wrap her head around her classes. It wasn't due to the fact that she could not help but dig deeper in her friend's mind in whispered conversations or the fact that she had simply joined the school two months before the end of the school year and she had shifted to a totally different program. It was the pair of narrow blue eyes that would fall upon her when she walked down the halls. The goose bump that covered her soft skin when his fingers brushed it. The soft sound of his laugh that she could hear from the other side of the cafeteria. To have a crush was something. To be constantly reminded of him in her daydreams was something else and she did not know how much of that slight obsession she was ready to explore.
It was her father who noticed her lack of appetite first then the fact that she was always sitting on the rocks by the back of the house. He noticed how she would stare at the horizon, secretly wishing her eyes would fall upon the twins who had decided to surf nearby.
But she didn't know anything about surfing and never saw anyone riding the waves in the stretch at the cusp of her backyard. All she knew was that the days passed and her notebook was nearly full again but this afternoon of June, she had miraculously kept her phone with her instead of clumsily leaving it on her desk like most of the time.
And, as if she had been waiting for some sort of sign, her phone rang, the screen brightly lit up with “Medina” scrolling across it. A deep breath filled her lungs before she picked up.
“Hi! Is this (Y/N), the manly voice asked nearly as soon as she answered the call.
- Erm, yes, who is this?
- Oh, hi, it's Jim. I didn't have your number so I borrowed Medi's phone.
- I see, she nearly whispered. How can I help?
- Well, I'm kind of calling for my dad, he's trying to plan some sort of gathering and wanted to know if you guys wanted to come and join?”
He bit the inside of his cheek. Wouldn't it have been easier to ask her if she wanted to come see him instead? Sure, his father did have a gathering. Sure, his father wanted to know if he wanted to invite his friends. But she wasn't his friend, she was Medina's friend.
“Sure! At what time do we need to be over?” she replied, leading Jim to release a sigh of relief he was unaware of. Quickly rethinking his father's words, he invited them to join at 7pm. The call shortly ended to his dismay. He had thought of calling her when he had a few over the length of time she has crawled in the dark corners of his mind.
Practically sprinting to his sister, he dropped her phone next to her as he sat on her bed. “So, you're sure she's single, right?” he asked the blonde for what felt like the 100th time. Her eyes rolled as she repeated herself. “Once again, she has never mentioned any boyfriend or girlfriend”. She had pried him open when he noticed how he would shift in his seat when she tried to help him with certain homework the rare moments (Y/N) would come back to their house after class. She felt it. When her name came on the table for any reasons possible, she would find his eyes turning into the most glittery starry night sky and his smile would grow wide.
Despite her trying to keep her friend for herself, she could not pass up the sad look in her brother's eyes. Deep down she understood what made her stick in her mind. She was pretty, smart, creative and talented. She was respectful and poised. Damn she really was pretty. He told her how he could feel a small spark in the darkness when he found himself sitting on the harsh rocks next to her while his twin excused herself to retrieve something inside.
It felt meaningful to have her around. And he wanted to help fix the glimmer that the broken girl had twinkling in her eyes. He wondered if two wrongs could make it right sometimes. That's what one of the songs she played one night they stayed late next to a bonfire was about. And he played it on repeat as he fell asleep, his dreams picturing the both of them fixed and running away.
Maybe running away would help him stop his reckless behaviour? Maybe he was the one who needed fixing and she was the help he desperately needed. The doorbell rang as he finished spraying one of his body sprays, making him jump our of his bones.
The voice of her father was invited in by Phil. Jim's heart fluttered when her light voice called out for Medina, the two girls starting a whispered conversation. Gripping all of his courage, he shook off the sweat that accumulated above his brow, opened the door of the bathroom and made his way to his sister's bedroom, gently waving and the  two peas in a pod sitting on the bed.
His clammy hands helped him decide on his next move. He left the bedroom and nearly jumped down the flight of stairs, meeting the adults in the kitchen and sneaking a pack of beer down to the usual spot where he sits.
It felt like he waited for ever when the two figures showed up but he failed to notice the lack of clothes covering her. Dashing for the water, his sibling and crush crashed in the cool water and Jim knew if needed to dive straight in it too. Not to be with them as they apparently were having enough fun together, but to ward off the thoughts in his head. He cursed himself for feeling driven by his hormones as he opened the first bottle of beer of the pack, hoping it would be the last one.
But it wasn't. Another one followed, then a spliff and another one. He laid against the rocks, looks at the changing sky when an icy pair hands wrapped around his ankles. Shouting in surprise, he looked down to see her angelic smile, laughing happily at his squeal. Drops of water soaked her hair and rolled off her body. She leaned towards him, nearly whispering in the shell of his ear. “Medina told me your secret” she giggled and his heart nearly dropped to his knees. He tried to suppress the uncomfortable pain in his chest and he leaned in too, failing to notice the colours blossoming in her cheeks as his breath, scented with weed and beer, reached her ears “and which secret would that be, missy?” he attempted to tease before she sat back when her blonde friends told them to “get a room” at the evident proximity of their bodies. “She told me about the booze” she whispered before Jim's body slumped back.
She had never touched a drop of alcohol however she could not imagine a safer environment to try it out, with her best friend and the boy who constantly sprouted red across her cheeks or blossomed butterflies in her stomach. “Can I try some?” she sheepishly asked as he brought his half empty can. He gave her a small nod, holding the drink towards her. His eyes fell in hers as she gulped on the sour liquid, wincing a bit before getting used to the taste.
“You can finish it” he mumbled, Medina agreeing that he probably had enough already. She excused herself, claiming she was going to fetch some burgers.
But she never came back. She left the two of them to discuss and get intoxicated. She watched from the pool side as the gently drifted closer and closer, their shoulders rubbing. She swore she could notice how he was constantly on the cusp of kissing her and how she drunk his words.
“You're really cute (Y/N)” he surprised himself, her lips parted in a soft laugh and his eyes were glued to them, watching closely what he wished to make them his next target. But she was the bold one and her lips crashed first, smacking against his cheekbones to his dismay. He took his lips between his teeth, his feet happily and quickly moving from left to right. “You're such a dork, James” she whispered against his cheek. His heart skipped the heaviest beat.
He side eyed her lips and started to turn his head. She looked at him and for a second, she rejoiced herself, practically begging for his lips against her but her mother's voice pulled their attentions to her. Home time it was and he calmly prayed and hoped she would stay. But if she did, she wouldn't stay for him, she would stay for her best friend but he was happy with that.
And that night, like every night he got the chance to watch her bloom in the moonlight, he would wear himself out by wrapping his hand under his boxers hoping it was her fingers, imagining her doing similar things to herself. If only he knew it wasn't just his imagination and that she would wake up with a similar mess in her pyjamas, it might put his broken mind at ease.

Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian roleswap AU.... I have....... a lot of ideas
(with potential for ningsang, wangxian, or ningxian. nothing set in stone yet)
Introducing Wen Ying, known by most as Wen Wuxian, the prodigious brother of the just as highly regarded doctor Wen Qing.
And also introducing Wei Ning, sometimes known as Wei Qionglin, the meek martial brother of Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli.
Jiang Yanli is very protective of Wei Ning, and defends him whenever possible, but he receives little attention. He's just a servant's son, even though Jiang Fengmian still spoils him. His timid nature makes it difficult for Yu Ziyuan to be so furious at him, seeing how he really does his best to avoid trouble.
Wei Ning's cultivation skills aren't too bad, but it's certainly below Jiang Cheng's level. The only thing he's better at than his shidi is archery, where he shines at competitions due to Jiang Cheng's encouragement.
Things that are different: Wei Ning and Jiang Cheng have a much better sibling relationship, even though Jiang Cheng is still sometimes jealous of how his father coddles and spoils him. But he himself can't help but want to do the same for Wei Ning. There is much less competition, and they're simply good friends. As well, Wei Ning would act as a damper for Jiang Cheng's temper, instead of aggravating it like Wei Wuxian does.
Meanwhile, Wen Wuxian catches the attention of Wen Ruohan and even some people outside of the Wen sect. Because of this attention, Wen Qing gets even more recognition. The two of them are like a power sibling duo: the prodigious healer and the prodigious young cultivator. Wen Ruohan is quick to harness Wen Wuxian's power for his conquering plans. He is made to lead armies and given similar ranking power as Wen Xu and Wen Chao. But soon, after seeing the carnage that Wen Ruohan wants him to further cause, and coming from a healers' branch, he boldly tells Wen Ruohan that he is quitting the battlefield. He summararily gets kicked out of the Wen sect.
Meanwhile, when they go to study at Cloud Recesses, Wei Ning still goes with Jiang Cheng. His cultivation level is significant enough to be allowed to go. I imagine that he possibly either was discouraged from, or was not very encouraged to do a lot of cultivation practice in canon, so being so close to the main family this time, he could have a higher cultivation level. After all, he would've spent less time learning healing and medicine from Wen Qing. I think he would've instead learned a lot from Jiang Yanli, like cooking.
Anyway, there's definitely no attraction from Lan Wangji. Instead, Nie Huaisang is the one that falls for the sweet Wei Ning of Yunmeng Jiang, Wei Ning who is far too innocent to indulge Huaisang's dirtier interests, but would gladly listen to him talk about art. Wei Ning makes a completely opposite impression on Lan Qiren: what a perfect guest disciple of the Gusu Lan Sect! He never once punishes him to copy rules. Instead, he and Nie Huaisang study together, and while Wei Ning indulges Huaisang's more innocent artistic interests, he encourages him to study hard too. Huaisang would confess a lot of his family troubles to Wei Ning, who would do a bit of the same. They become easy friends, and if the relationship ever moves further, I imagine it would happen in the trope style of "but he's my best friend; I can't tell him I have feelings for him or it'll ruin the friendship" on both sides.
Back to Wen Ying, a now kicked-out Wen Wuxian escapes to Gusu Lan Sect for refuge......
He's refused at first. He was not the one that burned down Cloud Recesses, but certainly, that did happen. But eventually, he is accepted when he proves his sincerity and well, there's also the fact that he's already kicked out of the Wen Sect.
That reminds me, Xuanwu cave...... Wei Qionglin would not aggravate Wen Chao like that, but he would protect and defend Mianmian. He'd probably manage to escape with the others, and thus no one stays behind nor slays the Xuanwu.
ALTERNATIVELY (I like this version better), Wen Wuxian is sent in place of Wen Chao (if this is before he protests and gets kicked out). Wen Chao (along with Wen Zhuliu) are sent elsewhere. The prodigious Wen Wuxian is thought to be enough without needing Wen Zhuliu. Wen Wuxian follows along with Wen Ruohan's orders for the most part, but clearly reluctantly. (note: yes, Wen Chao's girl is still with Wen Chao and not here in this case. there's no replacement. it's just Wen Ying with some other Wen cultivators.)
He doesn't want to be leading the other cultivators to the Xuanwu cave without their swords either. But at least he still has Suibian (I imagine Wen Qing could've helped name it in this case). When the beast awakens, he actually leads the other cultivators to try and defeat it. "Even if you don't have your own swords, we can still try our best!" he insists, and it's here that Lan Wangji first meets him. He's a Wen, and Lan Wangji hates him at first. But he sees his reluctance, his heroic nature, and when, some months later when Wen Ruohan's orders become too cruel for Wen Wuxian to go on and he shows up at the entrance to Gusu Lan sect......
Well, we all know wangxian is just destined to happen, isn't it.
But meanwhile, there's ningsang, look at the ningsang!!
When the Wens destroy Lotus Pier (Wen Ying had already defected by then), Wei Ning finally becomes tougher. It was like a wake up call. Despite it certainly not being his fault, he's convinced that if only he was stronger, he could've done more to stop this. As Jiang Cheng clings to him in a hug and sobs and grieves, Wei Ning vows to do better, he vows to protect his shidi even at his own expense. Jiang Cheng can't hate Wei Ning, can't blame him, because look at him, how could he? He was the opposite of a troublemaker.
Anyway I'm kinda skipping around but, archery competition. Wen Wuxian wins first place, earning much prestige for the Wens despite them having no one else who scored even in the top 10. Wei Ning, who certainly has no nervousness when shooting since his shidi actually encouraged this talent of his, wins 4th, beating Jiang Cheng who lands sixth.
(the ranking was Wen Wuxian, Lan Xichen, Lan Wangji (who didn't forfeit this time), Wei Qionglin, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Cheng. This earns him a bit of ire from Jin Zixuan...)
I like to imagine that, since Wei Ning would be very close with Nie Huaisang from when they studied together, at some point he might even seek refuge with the Nie sect. I'm not quite sure where/when this fits in yet, though....
Wen Wuxian might still be the one to invent demonic cultivation. Furious at him for defecting, Wen Ruohan sends Wen Chao and Wen Zhuliu after him, and he still gets thrown into the burial mounds.
On the other hand, I haven't decided on a lot of things for this AU. Who saves Jiang Cheng when he runs back to Lotus pier and gets his golden core destroyed? Wei Ning would go look for him, but well, would Wen Wuxian still be there? And how would Wen Wuxian know Wei Ning, even if he is?
I'm not sure. This is a really wild idea but I wanted to see where it goes and now I'm stuck.... I'm not even sure who'll invent demonic cultivation anymore. Could Wei Qionglin be the one to do it? I don't know. I really don't know, ahaha! Speaking of which, I'm also hoping to have more NHS interactions in this AU! I promised ningsang after all~!

Every few hours, a nurse would come in to check Virgil’s vitals and blood pressure and to ask questions about his mental well being. Each time a nurse entered, Virgil tensed. He was terrified that he could say something wrong--that one tiny misstep could see him shipped away to some mental facility where he’d be poked with needles all the time. Luckily, Patton was still there, keeping him grounded and in control of his thoughts. He was extremely grateful for that.
After a particularly intense meeting where they’d asked about self harm and pushed far too hard for his comfort, Patton pulled a small gift bag out of his backpack.
“I had Logan and Roman pick this up from the gift shop yesterday, but I decided to save it until you really needed it.” Pat placed the bag onto Virgil’s lap and watched expectantly. Virgil pulled away the tissue paper and gasped. There was a tiny cat plushie inside, which he took out with careful hands.
“This is awesome, Patton. Thank you.” A hint of a smile spread across his face.
“It’s no problem, kiddo! Now, why don’t we listen to some of that sweet music of yours? I know it calms you down.” Patton reached for the phone, but Virgil stopped him.
“Aren’t you missing a ton of school to stay here, Pat? Don’t get me wrong; it’s nice to have you around as moral support, but I don’t want you to fall behind.” He rhythmically squeezed his new plushie in an attempt to stay calm.
“Roman and Logan will bring me my school stuff tonight, and I can access lessons online for most of my classes. Don’t worry about me, kiddo. Worry about yourself.”
“Alright…”
---
Over the days, Patton and Virgil fell into a simple rhythm. There were three check-ins before lunch, three before Logan and Roman showed up at around 4, one before dinner, and two before Logan and Roman left for the night. Even though they had to stay an extra half-day “just to be sure,” the schedule stayed the same, and Virgil didn’t really worry about it. When he was finally discharged on Saturday morning, the doctor had offered to prescribe antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication.
“It might help with your suicidal ideations,” he’d coaxed. He had the same sugary sweet twinge in his voice that the nurses had as if he was trying too hard to be genuine.
“Um, that’s okay. I don’t think I’ll need them.” Virgil’s voice was shaky. He didn’t want to take any medicines that messed with his brain, especially ones that had a higher chance of addiction. He didn’t need anything like that to top off his pile of problems.
“Alright, but if you ever decide you do, here’s my extension so you can get a prescription.” The doctor handed him a slip of paper. Virgil just nodded as he watched the doctor leave. He’d already changed into his normal clothes and makeup, though his normal hoodie had been swapped out for a deep purple one because his normal one was had been covered in blood and deemed a “biohazard.”
Virgil pushed himself off of the hospital bed and cringed at the loud smack his high tops made when his feet hit the ground. He grabbed his backpack from the floor and waited for Pat to gather all of his things. Roman and Logan had taken the suitcase back to Patton’s house on Thursday, so there were only a few things left to be taken. When Virgil glanced back at Patton, all he saw was a pile of blankets and cardigans walking towards him.
“Um, Pat? You need some help?” Patton’s head popped up from behind the pile.
“Nope. I just need you to push the buttons of the elevator and open the doors for me!”  Virgil opened his mouth to say something but stopped himself. Better to not ask any questions.
As soon as they hit the ground floor, Virgil let out a sigh of relief. He didn’t have to be in this damn hospital anymore, nor did he have to answer the invasive questions from the staff, and he certainly didn’t have to eat the gross hospital food (that soup definitely wasn’t made with chicken). Plus, he didn’t have to take the elevator whenever he wanted to get anywhere.
“Hey, Young and Menace,” Roman greeted as the duo got into Logan’s car.
“What’s up, Fancy Pants?” Virgil quipped. It wasn’t his best remark, but he cut himself some slack after being in the hospital for four days.
“Logan,” Patton whined, ignoring the squabbling. “Can we pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaasssseeeee go get pancakes? Pleeaaaaaassseeeee?” He sounded like a toddler who was trying to beg his parents to buy him a new toy that he seriously did not need.
“Didn’t you just have breakfast an hou--”
“But Logan! It’s a special occasion!”  Logan glanced back at his friend in the rearview mirror, and it was obvious from his face that he’d caved.
“Fine.”
“YES!” Patton screeched and hugged Logan around the seat, much to the latter’s dismay.
After stopping for takeaway pancakes, Patton and Virgil were delivered home. Once again, Pat took a giant mound of things in while Virgil only carried his backpack. He’d had tried to convince Patton to give him some of the items, but he was only met with refusals. Defeated, he shrugged and made his way into the house.
“I had my parents set up a room for you near me. I think it’s all ready, if you want to head upstairs! It’s the door across from mine,” Patton said with a strange hint of excitement. Something was definitely up, but Virgil couldn’t quite think of what could be waiting for him.
Together, they maneuvered around the maze house and climbed the stairs. Before Virgil could open the door, Patton shyly said, “I should probably warn you that I have a surprise for you. It’s nothing big, so don’t worry about it at all, but I wanted to make sure.”  Virgil highly doubted that it was “nothing big” since nothing Patton did for his friends seemed small, but he turned the knob anyway. He looked back at his friend before pushing the door open.
Virgil wasn’t much of an exaggerator (okay, maybe he was sometimes), but he literally lost his breath for a moment when he saw the room. Inside, the room had been painted dark grey, with black and purple sheets, a metal desk, a black dresser, and even a few movie posters hanging on the walls. It was incredible.
“Patton, you had this done for me? Seriously? That’s so fucking cool!” Virgil walked in and sat down on his bed, discarding his backpack on the floor.
“Of course, kiddo. I have one more surprise, so wait right there while I get it.” Patton literally dropped all of the stuff in his arms onto the floor and ran into his room. Virgil rubbed his hands on the blanket on his bed, and he found the sheets had an incredibly soft texture no matter which way he ran his hand across it. He was so busy examining the blanket that he hadn’t realized Patton had returned.
“Here’s your last surprise, Virge!” he exclaimed. Virgil snapped his head to look at what Pat was holding.
“Is that… a paper chain?” The teen on the bed was thoroughly confused.
“Yeah! While we were in the hospital, I was researching things about depression and anxiety, and I stumbled upon this thing called the Paper Chain Project. Basically, you add colorful rings for every day you go without self harming, and if you relapse, you add a white chain, but continue the chain each day after without self harming. It’s supposed to show you that if you’ve resisted before, you can resist again.” Patton held out the three-link chain to Virgil, who hesitantly took it.
The first chain was made of light blue construction paper and had “Wed, April 26. To Virgil, From Patton. I hope your journey continues with happiness and success.” The other two, made of purple and pink paper, had nothing on them. Tears welled up in Virgil’s eyes
“I… I…” Virgil’s voice trailed off into a sob. He was so lucky to have been found by Patton that night. For once, he actually saw a pinprick of light at the end of the tunnel.
The mattress next to Virgil sunk down as Patton sat. “I know, kiddo. I know.” Patton’s arms wrapped around him, anchoring him. He took his arms and returned the hug, crying softly into the other’s shirt.
“’When Rome’s in ruins, we are the lions,’” Patton sang. He must’ve been subconsciously learning the songs Virgil had played during their time in the hospital. “’Free of the coliseums. In poison places, we are anti-venom. We’re the beginning of the end.’”
Patton sang until Virgil’s tears had finally dried out. Virgil pulled away and hastily wiped at his eyes with his sleeves.
“Thank you, Patton. For saving me, twice, actually, and for staying with me and for doing all of these really incredible things for me. You’re an awesome friend. Like, the best ever.”
Patton’s normal smile only grew larger. “That’s what friends are for, Virge! Now, I’m sure you want to spend a little time alone, so you’re free to roam the house if you want to, or you can use our extra laptop to go online or do homework. It should be in the desk drawer.” Patton stood up and gave a quick wave before heading to his own room.
Virgil sat on his bed for a few more minutes, twisting the paper chain around in his hands, before standing up to find the laptop. He hadn’t contacted a single one of his teachers about his absences, and he dreaded having to explain that he’d been in the hospital for four days. He pulled the laptop out of the desk, along with a pen and a few sheets of looseleaf paper.
There was no password on the laptop, luckily, so he easily booted it up and opened Chrome, signing into his school email account. He had about fifteen emails from his teachers. Most of them were “Hey! I’ve noticed you haven’t been at school for the past few days, and you hadn’t been planning a vacation, so here’s your homework you’ve missed,” but the ones from his Graphic Arts teacher really stood out.

Hey, Virgil! I noticed you were acting a bit down today and wanted to make you’re doing alright. I’m really excited to see your design for the banner project, by the way!
See you tomorrow,

I noticed you weren’t in class today, so I hope you don’t mind me checking up on you, Virgil. After yesterday, I’m just a little bit worried about your well being. I hope to see you tomorrow; you always bring a good dose of sarcasm to class, and I’m beginning to miss that.

Hey, Virgil. You’ve been missing for a few days, and it’s starting to worry me. I tried to call your parents, but neither would pick up. I’m sure you’re okay, but I just want to make sure. You’re a really good student, but I’m sure you know that. It’s been very hard to keep class on track without your witty remarks.

Virgil, although it’s against my better judgement, I’ve decided to stop emailing you after this one. I’m very worried about you, but sometimes people just don’t check their emails. The lessons from these past days are linked below. There hasn’t been any homework since we’ve just been working on banners. There isn’t a lesson for tomorrow, so don’t worry about that.
Mrs. Miller
Virgil immediately clicked the reply button on the last email.

Mrs. Miller,
I’m really sorry to have left you hanging these past few days. Yes, I’m okay. I had an accident on Tuesday that put me in the hospital for a few days. I’ll be back tomorrow, but I might be a little out of it. I’ve had my living arrangements be mixed up as well, so I’m trying to get used to the change. I might need a few days to catch up as well, since I don’t know if I’ll be able to do 16 lessons worth of stuff in two days.
Virgil Thomas
Send. Virgil let out a breath that he hadn’t even realized he’d been holding. It had completely slipped his mind that Mrs. Miller would be worried that he’d suddenly disappeared, especially with how close they were. It left a little pang of guilt in his stomach, but he knew there wasn’t much he could do about that. At least he’d eventually gotten back to her.
He clicked around through the emails, collecting assignments and downloading lessons. Virgil was already feeling overwhelmed by the work. He had at least thirty math problems for each day that he’d been gone, plus the ones he’d neglected on his birthday, fifty pages of reading for AP Gov, and he needed to make the set designs for the upcoming show for his Theatre independent study, since they were beginning production soon. He decided the set designs would be the easiest, so he started on that.
They were doing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella Enchanted” for their spring musical, which was really exciting. Although Virgil was all doom and gloom, he really enjoyed making fantastical sets for the shows that really packed a punch for the whole atmosphere. He’d been told they’d have backdrops for the village and ballroom, but they’d need wall pieces for the house and the outside of the house in the garden scene. He needed to pick out furniture when he could actually see what they had in the shop, but pieces they definitely needed to build were a fountain for the village center, the carriage, the pumpkin patch, and the flower arch for the kiss scene outside of the palace. It wasn’t too intense, but it was still a lot. Virgil made rough sketches of some basic layouts, adding labels for clarification.
When he was finished, he felt very accomplished, even though the plans were pretty plain, and the more definite details would need to be discussed once building began. Virgil looked over his work and set them to the side. He checked the time on his phone and was shocked to see that it was already 3:30. He had been so sure he’d spent only an hour at most on the designs, not three. A sigh escaped from his mouth. Might as well go to check in with Patton.
He tidied his desk just a bit before heading over to the opposite room. Virgil lightly knocked on the door and waited to hear a response. After no reply, he knocked again, slightly harder this time. He heard some rustling behind the door, and then the door suddenly opened to show a slightly disheveled Patton standing in front of him. Virgil was slightly taken aback.
“Um, Patton? Are you okay?” He made a sweeping gesture of Pat’s messy hair and clothes.
Patton smiled. “Of course! I’m just having some trouble with some of my Physics homework.” It seemed to be more like a lot of trouble, but Virgil really couldn’t blame him for struggling. Missing four days of school would be hard on anybody.
“Do you need help? I had physics last semester and got a pretty good grade.” Virgil didn’t mention he’d gotten perfect scores on every test, nor that he never missed an assignment due date or extra credit project.
“Oh! Sure, kiddo. That’d be very nice of you. Thanks.” Patton stepped out of the way and gestured inside his bedroom. The two took seats at Patton’s white desk and worked on trajectory and resistance problems until Pat’s dad had come to tell them that dinner was ready.

💜🎂Happy Birth-Date, Pythor X Reader for @anti-cosmofangirl (Part 1)💜🎂
Bright sun and cool breezes gently swept through the village of Jamanikai. Excitement abounded as happy couples strolled through the streets, while the fountain in the center of the square peacefully bubbled away. Meanwhile, merchants from all around were setting up their stalls for the Valentine's Day festival.
It would be hard for anyone not to feel giddy amid the chattering and joyful bustle, but this afternoon was extra special for you. That's because today was your birthday!
This was the first time you ever celebrated your day outside of Ninjago City, and you couldn't wait to see what the festival had in store. Your friends who'd been here in past years had only hyped you up farther, with tales of rose petals floating down the village's waterways, to talented kabuki street performers, to the sugary delicacies in the window of the sweets shop!
However, according to the schedule pamphlet you'd picked up, there'd still be a while to wait before the festivities began; so you decided to check out some of the area's natural beauty in the mean time.
You found a small trail leading into the nearby forest. As you maundered up it, the songs from the birds that perched in the pines sounded crisply through the air; while the last piles of snow seeped into the earth. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath of contentment, barely remembering the last time you felt so calm....
...that is, until you took just one more step forward!
"AHHHHHHHH!" You screamed as the ground gave way from under you!
Even though you'd braced for the sudden impact, it still stung immensely as your body landed in the soil. Slowly cracking your eyes back open, you could see the hole you'd fallen through and hazily estimated that it'd been at least a ten foot plunge! Turns out, the melting snow had made the ground more than a tad unstable.
"Great," you thought as you dusted some of the rubble off yourself, "how do I get myself out of here?"
Turns out the answer to that question was just a few feet away, bickering amongst themselves!
"Now remind me," Skales hissed, "why are we taking the mountain path back to Ouroboros? There's much faster routes..."
"To throw those troublesome ninja off our trail!" A certain Anacondrai replied matter-of-factly, "I've heard tell that their patrol's have been rumbling directly over the tunnel to the desert!"
Suddenly, the loud crash and scream from your fall boomed through the cave! The duo slithered quickly ahead towards the source, expecting that they'd spoken of the devil and would soon be doing battle with a particular team of Spinjitzu masters!
But as they neared the cave-in, some of your struggles to get un-stuck from the earth could be faintly heard. Pythor signaled Skales to halt as they examined the situation from a safe distance.
"Excellent," Pythor exasperatedly said, "now I'll have to divert some Constrictai to fix this mess before it's discovered..."
"A bit late for that, with a land dweller down here." Skales snarked back.
"Well at least it's not a Ninja!" Pythor replied.
The Anacondrai turned his attention to the mound of rubble.
"Hello, you there!" He called, "Are you alright? Can you stand?"
"I think I'm OK!" You called back, happy that some kind of help had found you.
You'd finally managed to wriggle free enough to stand, using the cave wall for support. However, when you went to take a step, a sharp pain shot from your right ankle! You let a yelp of discomfort and lost your balance; though you reacted quickly enough so that you leaned your back onto the dirt wall versus falling flat on the ground again.
"Just what I thought..." Pythor muttered as he slithered into view.
Your heart nearly stopped when you got the first glimpse of your mysterious savior. The deep purple hue of his scales glistened in the small rays of light that filtered in, with his gold and gemstone laden ornamentation only adding to his regal appearance. His keen eyes glowed an arresting fuchsia, and they were unwaveringly fixed on you.
"Y-you're, you're, an Anacondrai!" You mustered through your shock, quickly realizing just how dangerous your situation had become!
"An astute observation," the Serpentine said, curving his long neck so that his face was now level with yours, "now, are we going to just stand around talking about the obvious, or would you like some help for that leg?"
"I guess I could use a hand..." you said, trying to bite back your nerves.
"Well, we should be on our way then!" Pythor said as he held his arms open. "No need to be so frightened, I don't bite."
He couldn't help but let a small chuckle at his own joke as he scooped you into a bridal carry. At this point, Skales had also emerged from the shadows, shaking his head at his ruler's antics. You couldn't believe what was happening!
"Why would any Serpentine soldier, let alone an Anacondrai, be so nice to a human?" You thought, now a captive as the three of you continued your course.
The truth was, Pythor had no clue why he felt so generous towards you. Land dwellers like you were too far beneath him to be of much concern; yet your pathetic state was oddly..... endearing..?
He wasn't quite sure what was happening, but he'd decided to just go along with it for the time being. After all, this could prove to be a golden opportunity!
"Perhaps I'll be able to bribe some intel out of her on the Ninja," Pythor schemed to himself, "worse come to worse, we could just use her as bait for a trap!"
The silence in the tunnel had began to get awkward by now, Skales's occasional glares not helping matters.
"Apologies for not introducing myself sooner," Pythor said, attempting to break the ice, "I'm Pythor P. Chumsworth, who might you be?"
"I'm (Y/n)," you replied, "(y/n) (l/n)."
"I should've guessed you were called something so lovely." He said, hoping his charisma would charm you just as had done with that brat Lloyd.
"Oh," you stammered, feeling your cheeks begin to flush, "thank you."
~~~~~
In no time, the three of you had arrived to the legendary lost city. Skales took his leave, apparently fulfilling an order to gather some Constrictai and begin construction on the cave-in.
The ancient pillars took your breath away with how they glittered against the sand; your anxieties slowly being replaced by curiosity with your new surroundings. It was definitely a relief for you to be above ground again, as that tunnel was starting to get claustrophobic.
"Where are we headed?" You absentmindedly asked, trying to soak in each passing alleyway of the mysterious city.
"To the infirmary, of course." Pythor replied, "The Venomari are some of the best when it comes to medicine, you'll be fixed up in no time!"
He'd taken notice of your wide-eyed expression and couldn't help but smile. He knew the Serpentine's ancestral stronghold was truly a marvel to behold, and to a human who might've believed it all to be a myth, it must've been like walking into a fairytale. He somewhat envied the innocence and pure wonder that shined in your eyes.
Soon enough, the two of you made it to the infirmary. Your nerves were starting to return as Pythor gently laid you down on the stone examination table.
"Great, are they going to spit their poison in my eyes?" You thought, "What if this is actually some kind of trap!?"
Before your thoughts could fully run away from you, however, a Venomari healer slithered into the room. They gasped in shock when they saw you, clearly taken aback by the sight of a land dweller.
"Oh, she's no enemy," Pythor reassured the other Serpentine, "she's my guest. The poor thing took quite a spill on our way is all."
"I see," the healer replied, having regained composure as they examined your ankle, "that's pretty twisted up, but as long as she doesn't put any weight on it for the rest of the day, it should be fine by tomorrow morning."
The healer then rummaged through a nearby cupboard, producing a small jar of lime green cream.
"This is going to be cold," they warned as they scooped out some of the substance, "but it'll take away most of the pain."
You tensed up as the cream made contact with your skin. You shut your eyes tight, expecting to soon be higher than a kite from whatever crazy venom was surely in the foreign substance....
But instead, your joint felt pleasantly numb.
You tentatively cracked an eye as you flexed your ankle, breathing a sigh of relief. Pythor couldn't help but to snicker at your reactions.
"Anticipating something a bit more....hallucinogenic?" He teased.
"Was it that obvious?" You replied with a sheepish smile as the healer helped you onto a set of crutches.
~~~~~
Finally discharged from the infirmary, it quickly became obvious that there wasn't any way you were going to get back to Jamanikai in time for the festivities.
Despite this, you weren't disappointed. In fact, you actually weren't fully sure how you felt, especially in regards to the charming snake at your side. Lost in thought, you let out a small sigh as you and Pythor slowly made your way back through the crowded streets.
"Is something wrong?" Pythor asked, sensing how you'd become distant.
"Nothing really," you replied, the butterflies in your stomach growing worse, "I guess this is a far cry from how I was planning on spending my birthday is all."
This development was a curveball, but one that Pythor knew he could work with. Now was his chance to impress you!
"Well then," he replied, "this calls for a Slither Pit! After all, that's how we celebrate most things around here."
"Sounds good." You said, without a single clue as to what you were in for, yet kind of excited all the same.

Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, Serene. I love the Yumeng duo but I rarely read this siblings bond. I also need more Jiang Yanli :)
((sorry I wrote this and in the end it is heavy angst no serenity sorry…))
Take place after Jiang Cheng and Wei WuXian faked their fight at Burial Mound.
"I had no choice," said Jiang WanYin, Sect Leader of YunMeng Jiang, as soft hands applies medicine to his injuries.
Jiang YanLi quietly hummed.
"He just had to shelter the Wen Dogs. The nerves of him. If I didn't cut him off, YunMeng Jiang would be the target of everyone's hatred. I won't stand for that. I can't."
"I know, A-Cheng,"
"He's always like this. Always doing things his own way, meddling in other people's businesses. What can I do? What can I do?
"I don't know how to protect him"
His sister paused, and started to change the bandage on his arm.
"You did your best," she said, "you're the Sect Leader, A-Cheng. I trust you to make the best decisions for our Sect."
"Why aren't you angry at me? Shouldn't you be taking his side? You've always taken his side. You and father both. Don't you have more to say?"
"I am angry, A-Cheng."
With four words, spoken softly, Jiang Cheng felt all the air in his lung punched out of his body.
"I am angry, at the both of you, at myself, at everything. But you're both my little brothers, and you're the only family I got. You've both grown up, and you've made your own decisions.
"I know how much you loved A-Xian. I know how hard you tried."
Jiang Cheng's entire form sagged.
"I don't know if I made the right choice, A-Jie," he croaked, "I don't know."
"It's alright, A-Cheng. You made a choice, that's what matters.
"You've done your best."

Round 4: VS Alolan Meowth - Legends Part 4
Edit: Sooooo, I had a whole plan for Jasper's arc...and then world events happened lmaooo sooo, I made the chaotic decision to switch it up! So I changed the ending of this chapter and propelled it into a new direction!
And boom! Chapter 4! This one came along much smoother than I thought it would. Once I had a clear idea, everything fell into place. Of course, a little midnight inspiration helped a lot too
Oh, and I probably should have put a disclaimer before. For returning readers, the first 3 chapters are a rewrite so please go back and read so you don't get confused
Now, we meet Jasper in his newest form! I'm happy with how he came about. Before he was just a rough idea of a person, but now he has some much better character. I like it.
For this chapter, I had two albums helping me out. The first write up, I was listening to 11:11 Reset by Keyshia Cole. The best song for this chapter had to be Unbothered. Its a mood lol. Buttttt, then inspiration came a few days later after I wrote this! And I was struck by Something New by K. Michelle. And at that point, I just had to listen to the whole All Monsters Are Human album  It helped a lot tho lol
Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy it!
Pokémon Adventures: Turquoise, Jasper, & Ammolite
Round 4: VS Alolan Meowth – Legends Part 4
Location: Veilstone City Date: August 4th, 3000 Time: 8:45am
Veilstone City had its own lore. Albeit strange with convoluted plotlines. Baryte had read up on them on the way there. The most popular of them claimed a meteor shower granted people the power to carve out the mountain! An awesome tale if it were true. Too many conflicting accounts, however, made it impossible to know. If only he could time travel or something—that was possible, right?
Probably a pokémon capable. Pokémon possessed many astounding abilities. Time travel couldn't be too hard. Maybe an ancient pokémon helped make Veilstone City? Oh! What if it fled to outer space?
Now that was a theory Baryte liked. There had to be tons of pokémon out there. Some even lived amongst them like clefairy. Someday, he proclaimed with clenched fists and burning passion, he would encounter them all.
Someday soon, he hoped.
For now, Baryte settled for handling his delivery. He arrived in the city at dawn. And as sunlight bled through the parting clouds, scientists rushed through the streets with mounds of paperwork clutched to their chests. Led only by the dimming streetlamps illuminating their path. The life of his dreams. Baryte sighed. Someday he would be amongst them—a famous scientist with discoveries sealed into the paperwork by ink.
Studying all the fossils he scavenged—just like Papa!
No time like the present right? Baryte mused. All the best scientists found their start here. Perhaps he should give that meteorite field a visit? Professor Kapok wouldn't mind so long as I deliver it today anyways.
With a confident grin, Baryte took off. The meteorite field wasn't hard to find—on the eastern side by the residential area. Deserted, even at this hour. No surprise there—many scientists spent their internships studying here. Still, a fresh pair of eyes never hurt.
"'Sides, I got the perfect research buddy," grinning, Baryte tapped the dusk ball on his belt and summoned his rough and tough cranidos to his side. "Cranyte, ready for some research?"
She grinned. Always eager to help regardless of the task at hand. Unlike a certain rockruff he knew…
Baryte took his time examining the craters. Scribbled notes in his favorite fossil themed notebook. A good scientist always kept one handy.
Yet, he didn't observe anything bizarre. Just the average meteorite sight. Although, the did glow heavenly in the morning sun. Even—Whoa! A strange burst of energy smashed into his gut! Chilled his bones as he shivered. Had to be from this meteorite. It glowed different than the others—a powder blue instead of white.
Better get in closer.
He stepped closer…only to roll away as his senses rumbled. Barely avoiding a slash that severed the stone where he stood! His assailant—a gray cat with a golden coin on its forehead—sidestepped a rushing Cranyte and purred.
It wore a slick smirk as it wagged a paw in his face!
"What's the big idea?" Cranyte rushed it again, but the cat backflipped and struck her with a nasty kick to the butt! "Cranyte!"
The cat just smirked and shrugged off Cranyte's angry snarling. It shook its head, eyes darting to the crater.
The crater— "Hold up, Cranyte." Baryte followed its gaze and found a group of floating rocks circling the meteorite in a strange dance! "Are those pokémon?" If only he brought his camera! The cat purred and its smirk turned smug. "Thanks for the heads up!"
It shrugged. And, with one final smirk, it strolled off.
Odd little pokémon. Smart though—Baryte hadn't even seen these pokémon!
Probably used to blind humans like him. Some scientist I am, Baryte chuckled. Next time, he would pay better attention. Now, he had a delivery to complete. Hopefully they stuck around—he would love to catch one.
"Maybe Professor Kapok knows 'bout 'em." With a smile, Baryte walked away. Cranyte took to his side with ease. "C'mon girl, let's deliver this package."
Scientific studies could wait just a bit more, he reasoned.
The residential sector looked much blander than he thought. Elevated above ground level like much of the city. But had the dullest houses in existence. The parents brought some life to it. They rushed out of the area—morning toast clenched in their teeth and briefcases swinging. Baryte laughed. Just like Papa in the mornings.
Though, one parent stood out. Somewhat portlier than the rest with a full bread and gleaming yellow eyes. Dressed like a scientist, except he opted against the glasses and kept a spoink-themed briefcase. A Porygon floated by his short afro while a grumpig—with a messenger bag slung across its chest, no less! —took up the rear. He shot past Baryte, muttering something about medicine as sweat beaded his nutmeg skin.
Seemed like an unreliable guy. And a slob if the coffee-stained tie was any indication. Not the best role model, he sighed.
Shrugging, Baryte went on his way. The house was another easy find. It stood out with its cosmic paint job and star-shaped mailbox. Even had a satellite dish on the roof! Not a bad place to live, he decided.
He rang the bell and waited. Waited…and waited. Yet no response followed. Frowning, Baryte glanced at his pokétch. 10 am—someone had to be up!
Guess I'll leave it the mailbox. Baryte shrugged. Easy enough. Now to find a diner. He knew he should have made some soup when he woke up. Papa always said never to miss breakfast. Maybe that was how he missed those pokémon.
He turned to the mailbox and…found that cat staring back at him! Perched on top with another cocky smirk.
"Err, hi?" The cat huffed and turned up its nose! The gall— "What's that for?"
Cranyte didn't appreciate it, either. She snarled and kicked at the ground. Not that the cat cared much.
"Kito, you done antagonizin' 'em?" A handsome guy walked over with his arms folded behind his head. As Banou would say, a real snack! With skin carved out straight from the night sky and twinkling pale yellow eyes. Silver hair worn in a tapered afro. A truly cosmic guy—ewww, Baryte cringed. Well, would be if he didn't reek of sweat! Still…it made his tight, star-themed tank top and short shorts cling to his well-toned body.
"This your pokémon?" Baryte raised an eyebrow. "It's rude. What is it?"
"You get used to it," Cosmic Dude mused with an easy grin. "And it's a meowth—from Alola, of course."
Baryte pursed his lips. "Not something I'd ever want to get used to." Honestly, Cosmic Dude couldn't be much of a trainer with an attitude like that. Or was it just these meowths? Better look into it later.
Cosmic dude didn't seem phased though. He looked ready to speak when the door finally opened.
"Jasper?" A sickly woman walked out with a cacturne behind her. Her floral housedress and fuzzy green slippers didn't match the energy of her dull ebony skin. Nor the frizzy mess of her massive silver afro.
"Did you ring the bell?"
Cosmic Dude flinched. "Mommy—why are you up?"
Mommy? Come to think of it, they did look alike. Cheekbones and skin tone matched. Although Cosmic Dude didn't inherit those eyes.
Pretty selfish of him to leave her home alone. All for a run? Baryte never left Mama home like that. Good thing that cacturne came with her. It kept her balanced and sent a strange glance his way. Almost protectively—like it didn't know if he posed a threat yet.
Its questions went unnoticed by the duo, however. Locked in their conversation of hush whispers. Only pausing when the mother dissolved into a harsh coughing fit! Yet all Cosmic Dude did was wince and nag her through it. Rude, much like his cocky cat.
They're made for each other, he snorted.
Wait a minute. Did she call him Jasper?
"Sorry to interrupt," he interjected softly. Cosmic Dude gave him a halfhearted glare before nodding. "Are you Jasper Korinaztu?"
Cosmic Dude smirked and folded his arms behind his head. "Yeah, that's me. 'Sup—you a fan?"
Baryte rolled his eyes. "Hardly," he retorted and pulled out the package from his knapsack. A neat box wrapped in yellow paper. "But I have a package for you from Professor Kapok."
Jasper accepted the package and muttered a quick, "thanks," before glancing over his shoulder. "Kito, stop buggin' that cranidos."
Sure enough, that cat had Cranyte chasing after it! Damnit—when did he miss that? Baryte called out to her, but she ignored him. Instead rushed the cat for a vicious headbutt! Well, it would have been if that cat didn't jump over it.
Baryte slapped his forehead with a groan. "Seriously? Train your cat, dude!"
Jasper laughed. "Believe it or not, that's him on a good day." A good day—Baryte huffed. No sense arguing with a lousy trainer. "Tell ya what. Come have breakfast with us. For your troubles, ya know?"
Have breakfast with his cocky jock? Please. Baryte opened his mouth to retort. And his stomach interjected with a vicious snarl.
"Sure, I guess…"
Some free food never hurt.
Baryte expected the house to be a boy's den, like his cousin's. Clothes flung around and the pungent aroma of sweat-stained furniture. The usual. But, he walked into a clean house filled with posters, awards, and trophies! Not just sports trophies—like the track trophy on the mantle. There were science trophies and medals too! Awarded to a Darnell Korinaztu. Hmm, the father, perhaps?
Still cool! He should have expected this from the outside. However, Jasper didn't pin him as a science guy. Well, he didn't think highly of the dude anyways. Couldn't be too bright with a pokémon like that as his partner.
The mother led him to the dining room while Jasper brought over the best food ever! Sickly or not, this lady threw down in the kitchen. She made oran berry pancakes better than his favorite diner in Oreburgh! With a satisfied sigh, Baryte leaned back in his chair.
"Satisfied?" Jasper sat across from him and grinned, brushing his thumb against his nose. "They're my specialty, ya know?"
"Wait, you cooked?" Baryte glanced over to the mom. She seemed satisfied nibbling on his pancakes. Not that it stopped her cacturne from dotting over her. "I thought that—"
"—Mommy's sickly," Jasper cut in with a forced grin. "So, I do the cookin'."
Oh, that made sense. Papa did the same when Mama got sick too. Still weird to hear a kid picking up the slack. Didn't she have a husband? A woman as beautiful as her couldn't be single. Not with eyes like hers. Now those put a sea of shining stars to shame!
"I'm sorry to hear that, ma'am." Baryte confessed, but she waved him off. "I hope you get better soon."
Her soft smile lit up her skin better than the sun ever could. "Thank you. Jasper takes good care of me."
With practiced ease, Jasper waved her off with, "Nothing you wouldn't do for me."
"But it's more than you should." She spoke softly. "Latched to my side like this."
"Mommy," an eerie tension filled the room with Jasper's frown. Something about it sent chills down his spine. "It's fine. I promise."
What an…odd relationship. "Hey, Jasper—how old are you?"
Jasper responded almost instantly, eyes beaming as his cool grin returned. "Thirteen!"
Just as his file indicated. Athletic and paired with a pretty rare pokémon. Shouldn't be hard for him to a trainer. Plus, that cat defended those pokémon with precision. Maybe it had reason to be cocky. Shame it ate like a tepig. Goggling down its pelts by the fridge as a few fell to the clean tiles.
Gross, he scoffed, so much for trained. The cat in question locked eyes with him and smirked. Even slid a claw across its neck! That rude, mannerless—
"Have you started your journey yet?" Baryte interrupted that train of thought before it got worse. "How many badges do you have?"
Jasper only winced and toyed with a strange bracelet on his wrist. Star-themed like his clothes but had a peculiar charm Baryte couldn't make out.
"Jasper hasn't left just yet." His mom intervened with sadness in her eyes. "He's been taking care of me since I fell ill."
Ah. More pieces fell into place. Yet no matter how he split it, Cosmic Dude wasn't suited for his mother's caretaker. An admirable effort though—Baryte loved seeing caring kids. Especially when, years ago, he almost found himself in the same predicament. Thank Arcues Professor Kapok found him on that magical blue moon night.
Professor Kapok, Baryte smiled, taking a sip of his drink. He worked hard as an assistant for months and gained friends and support in Paxton and Banou. All thanks to that sweet human being.
"I can tell you love your mom." Jasper nodded eagerly but his eyes never left his bracelet. A nervous tic, perhaps? Daddy has a similar fixation with his goggles. Something Baryte picked up as well. "However, I think you should give the journey a chance."
Jasper raised an eyebrow. A strange emotion filled his eyes as he tore his gaze from that bracelet. Fear, Baryte guessed, but it didn't fit his aesthetic.
"You should really open this package. It might change your perspective."
His lips twitched before settling into a frown. Brows furrowed and his hands tightened into fists. Thoughts must have raced through his mind, Baryte knew.
Jasper fell silent with a heavy frown frozen on his face. But those eyes fell to his mother. Locked in another of their silent conversations. Baryte couldn't understand how they did it. Even Daddy couldn't read his mind like this—were they psychic?
"Ight," Jasper finally said with a smooth grin. "I'll take your word for it."
I hope you're proud of me, Mom. Baryte grinned and pulled the package from his knapsack. I did good.
How'd y'all like this? I really enjoyed playing around with Baryte. He's a fun guy if a bit critical. I wanted to be sure he sounded a bit different from the jaded Paxton and I think I did a pretty decent job. If not, it'll definitely be different down the job. They're my newest characters so I'm still learning about them and their kinks lol.
For Jasper, I did make a change for him from the OG stories. Starting with a new partner pokemon! At first, he had a munchlax and it was cute and all, butttt low-key uninspired lol. so, Alolan Meowth came along! He was already written getting a meowth anyways so I just switched it up. This was pre-sun and moon so once I discovered Alolan Meowth, everything just fit. I was tempted to do Galarian Meowth, but this felt right.
Next chapter we'll be seeing more of Jasper and his mom so stay tuned!
As always, feel free to leave a review or PM me with your opinions!

Sorry for not posting for so long. There was no real reason, other than the fact that I just didn’t feel like it. This household is made up of four supernatural friends and their government handler, (who happens to know how to use magic, but that’s got nothing to do with not being human, right?). They live in Isla Paradiso in one of the EA houseboats. I’m actually looking for a better house, but I haven’t had any luck. Mostly because it has to be on the water somehow. They’re going to university. Well, not their handler. He already has an degree. This is incredibly long, so don’t say I didn’t warn ya! :P I think before I place a ‘read more’, I’m going to state their species. Going clockwise from the top right corner we have a plantsim, a merman, a werewolf, and a vampire.
The order this time is for their descriptions to make the most sense, so we’re starting with the werewolf in the lower left corner. His name is Elliot Lane. He hates the name, so he usually only answers to Wolf. Although he has always been werewolf, the rich family he ran away from weren’t. Their handler, Oscar, who had to investigate his charges’ origins, will only say that his origins were scandalous. Wolf doesn’t really care. He is only thankful for his wolf form, after all it was incredibly helpful when he ran away at fifteen. Wolf is very possessive of everything he has, which weirdly includes his friends. They aren’t allowed to have friends that he hasn’t chosen to be his friend. They put up with this, because Wolf protects them. Despite this, everyone wants to be his friend or girlfriend. He tends to take advantage of his new ‘friends’, but he really doesn’t want to have anything to do with romance. He knows how to make people do what he wants, and is very good at knowing just how to talk to someone. He is studying physical education at university, but that’s mostly because his friends were going and he didn’t want to be left with Oscar. His traits are: Mean-Spirited, Charismatic, Athletic, Rebellious, Brave, Irresistible, and Hot Headed.
Next is the vampire in the lower right corner. His name is Thaddeus Bradley, although he usually goes by Bat. He was born an odd kind of mutant human. Oscar investigated and found that Bat’s mother was a scientist that was working with vampire bat dna. Needless to say, an accident happened while she was pregnant. His mother died when he was ten, leaving him alone since his father had abandoned his mother and him when Bat was born, because he blamed Bat’s mother for Bat’s mutation. The government had no idea Bat existed, since his mother kept him a secret, so Bat was left to fend for himself. Unfortunately distant relatives inherited the house he was living in, so he ended up on the streets. Bat lived on the streets for awhile, but didn’t have the strength to feed off of random passersby. He would have starved, but Wolf found him and decided that Bat was going to be his friend, so assisted in getting blood for him. Bat met Wolf when Wolf was sixteen, and is Wolf’s first and closest friend. He loves messing around with machines, so he is studying for a Technology degree. He’s very good at guessing what kind of person a person is, so the others always ask him what his opinion of people is. Random fact: Despite the fact that his mutation is comes from bats, most people think he’s some kind of wolf-man at first sight.  His traits are: Over-Emotional, Handy, Perceptive, Eccentric, and Friendly.
Corey North is the plantsim in the upper left corner. Wolf saved Corey after the forest where he was living was sprayed with some kind of poison, which left Corey unconscious. The next day immediately after Corey came to, he ran to find a dirt mound and buried himself in it. He didn’t emerge for a couple weeks, which left Wolf and Bat worried about his well being, so Bat went over to him and just started rambling. Eventually Corey emerged to tell him to shut up. Having nowhere to go, Corey stayed with the strange duo, and started his long search for art supplies. He hates being around people, and tends to get angry if anyone talks to him. Most of the time he’s outside painting or drawing, which he hates to be interrupted when doing either. Corey’s going to get a fine arts degree.  His traits are: Brave, Loner, Loves the Outdoors, Artistic, and Hot-Headed.
Caiden Moss, the merman in the upper right corner, was part of a very rich and influential family under the ocean. He’s now on land against his will. Oscar has questioned Caiden many times about this, but can never get a straight answer. In Oscar’s opinion, Caiden was either exiled or cursed, but most likely exiled, since Caiden still has his merman tail. Caiden washed ashore unconscious and hurt. The others rescued him from the beach and nursed him back to health, because Wolf, who was the one that found Caiden, had taken a shine to Caiden. Caiden at first really doesn’t like living with these ‘street urchins’, but they saved him, and to tell the truth he couldn’t live on his own. Caiden was the last to join the, besides Oscar, so he isn’t as close to the others as the others are to each other. Caiden hates being alone and is constantly looking for someone to talk to. Unfortunately that usually backfires tremendously, due to Caiden’s uppity attitude. It doesn’t help that Caiden’s a genus, and uses his knowledge against them. They get back at him by making fun of his clumsiness. Technically he’s only clumsy on land, but he can’t seem to get this argument to stop the teasing. He’s going to university for a science and medicine degree. His traits are: Social Butterfly, Clumsy, Genus, Proper, and Snob.
Oscar Briggs is the one in the bottom picture. He works for a government organisation trying to understand the recently revealed supernatural population. He was assigned to this group of supernatural creatures as their caretaker. Oscar has the same level of authority over them that a parent has over their children. He doesn’t like kids much, which as everyone knows includes young adults, and he’s usually in a bad mood, but he warms up to his charges... eventually. Oscar isn’t scared of any supernatural being. He’s usually just annoyed at any show of power. At first the kids didn’t know about his magical abilities, but they found out after he used them to protect Caiden from Monster Hunters. His charges knowing allows him to use his powers to discipline them, but it also means they have some dirt on him, which they can tell the Organisation, which really wouldn’t be a good thing for Oscar. Oscar definitely isn’t stupid in any way. He’s very good at reading his charges and figuring out their secret terms. He also had no trouble collecting the information about their pasts, which he did without the parties involved knowing.  His traits are: Dislikes Children, Grumpy, Perceptive, Brave, and Genus.

Defending the Perimeter: Farmers and Sharp Sticks
Herding cats. That’s what this was. Shahin heaved a heavy sigh as he pored over the seemingly endless mound of reports that had piled up on his makeshift desk during his absence, detailing everything from progress on the defensive emplacements to contact reports on patrols (which boiled down to “we didn’t see anything”) to letters from the few farmers in the outlying reaches of Silverbrook they had not yet convinced to seek shelter in the safety of the town proper. Many of the younger farmers, particularly those with families, were easy enough to get through to. The Sunguard simply did not have enough soldiers to cover such a wide berth of land.
A knock on the door perked his ears and pulled his attention away from the mountain of paper. Reflexively, he scowled at the thought of yet another complaint. There was not enough food, there were not enough weapons, there was not enough medicine, the list wore on and on and on without end. Heaving a sigh, he pushed himself to his feet and straightened his tabard and - still glowering at the door - made his way across tiny upstairs room he’d commandeered as his command post to see what the problem was now. He took a moment to pause, breathe deeply, and put on a less unpleasant face before he pulled the door open. On the other side was a tall, broad shouldered Blood Elf adorned in the same crimson and black regalia as Shahin. He was fair skinned and stern looking, facial features low and thick cut. It took Shahin a few moments longer than it should have to recognize him.
“Ah. Knight-Sergeant Heartwood.” At first, he was relieved to see another one of his own kind; soldiers he understood. They made sense. He could talk to them. Then, another thought struck him. “...if you’ve brought me more paperwork, I swear I’m going to throw you out a window.”
“Sir. I have no reports, sir, but there is an issue in the town square.”
Jolly as ever, thought Shahin as Heartwood grumbled in his usual monotone bass. With a sigh, he gestured for the walking statue of a man to take the lead and pulled the door closed behind him. Whatever was going on couldn’t be nearly as mind numbing as sitting behind that desk. Silver lining! Probably! Both men descended down the staircase and trod through the living space of the small house, doing their best not to even more inconvenience the family that was hosting them. Outside was a bustle of activity; villagers scurried to and fro, led by the nose where they would be needed by militiamen. Children ran and played in the street, their jovial laughter a bizarre contrast to the otherwise dour mood that had settled over the town. As a group of children passed by them playing some kind of game involving a stick and a loop of wood, Shahin was certain he saw the slightest hint of a smile tug at the corner of Heartwood’s mouth.
Down the road, closer to the middle of town, Shahin spotted what he felt was likely their destination. Someone had parked what looked like an alchemist’s shop on wheels right in the middle of the road and that had drawn quite a crowd. As they drew closer to the cart, Shahin was better able to make out the details. At the center of the crowd, standing on the cart proper, was a tall woman with a mane of crimson curls who looked to be gesturing to the many plants scattered on her rolling alchemy shop and explaining them to the villagers. The armor she wore was intricate and looked to be expensive, the silver detailing shimmering in brilliant contrast against the dark red backing. She wore a wide smile as Shahin and Sergeant Statue passed by, too engrossed in her work to give much notice to either of them. Though he didn’t recognize her face, her tabard indicated she was Sunguard.  Clearly there was no need for his presence here; all seemed quiet.
He made a mental note to speak to her later.
Both men rounded another corner and wound deeper into the small village. The nearer they got to the square, the more apparent the problem became. Dissenting voices shouted over one another loudly enough that even a street over Shahin could hear them clearly enough to get an idea of the situation. He breathed in deep through his nose and exhaled slowly through clenched teeth, bracing himself for the argument he knew was literally around the corner. Sure enough, they made the final turn that spilled them out into the town square and were greeted by another small crowd of people standing back toward the fountain at the center of the square while two men stood toe to toe, each shouting over the other. Off to the side, in crimson and gold, was Knight-Adept Autumnlight. She was pinching the bridge of her nose and squeezing her eyes tightly shut as the two men argued, clearly fed up with the both of them.
Thankfully, Shahin and Sergeant Heartwood arrived before she murdered anyone.
Her head snapped up and around at the sound of approaching footfalls, heels clicking together and arms rigid at her sides. With drilled precision, her right hand thumped against her chest in salute as she barked “Sir!” at their approach. Shahin returned her salute, albeit a little more half-hearted, and gestured for her to stand down. Immediately, the blonde woman’s posture relaxed and she brushed a stray strand of hair from her face.
“Adept,” Knight-Sergeant Heartwood rumbled, “status report for the Emberward.”
“That won’t be necessary. I think I’ve got an idea of what’s going on here.”
Shahin approached the two arguing men, whose shouting had reached a pitch he was certain only dogs could hear at this point, and drew in another deep breath.
“Gentlemen.” Neither of them answered. Annoyed, he tried again. “Gentlemen.” Still, neither man would stop shouting. Shahin turned over his shoulder toward Heartwood and gestured forward.
“If you would please, Sergeant.”
“That is enough!”
The man’s voice boomed like a bomb had been dropped in the middle of the square and all heads swiveled immediately toward him. Shahin was certain he could have heard a mouse cross the street in the now deafening silence. He smiled warmly and gave a nod.
“Thank you, Sergeant. Now then.” He turned his focus back to the arguing villagers. “My name is Shahin, Emberward of the Sunguard and commander of the Blood Knights presently protecting your village.” Both of them turned toward him and opened their mouths at the same time to try and speak over one another. Shahin held up a hand to silence them. “Let’s keep this civilized, if you please. One at a time.”
The man on the left glowered at him. He was older, thin, and looked like a genuinely unpleasant fellow. Between his callused hands, simple choice of clothing, slightly stooped posture and all around grouchy disposition, Shahin placed him as a farmer.
“What’s your name, sir?”
“Wiarrin Firevale. I own half the farms that feed this village.”
“And yours?”
“Jaeth Silversun. I run a store here in town.”
Shahin smiled at the two of them and folded his hands behind his back.
“Much more pleasant. Now then. What seems to be the problem?”
Almost immediately, Wiarrin got right up in Shahin’s face and jabbed a gnarled finger into his chest, making sure to repeat the gesture every few words.
“You are the problem! You and your Blood Knights and your Sunguard! You killed a bunch of those bandits, and now they’ll be back- only this time they’ll be out for blood!” Shahin arched a brow as the old man practically shouted at him. “And now- now that you’ve made this mess, we’re going to suffer for it! You’re asking us to abandon our farms, our livelihood! We’ve spent generations working this land and now these bastards are going to destroy it because you stuck your noses where they don’t belong!”
Before Shahin could even start to open his mouth to speak, Jaeth stepped in.
“Oh, come off it you old goat! They saved our lives and risked their own to do it. These people aren’t the problem, the bandits are!”
“And what would you know about our problems, city boy?! You may be safe here behind your walls, but we ain’t got that! It’s the farmers that suffer most from raids like this. If it wasn’t for them-” Wiarrin jabbed his finger right in Shahin’s face now “-they’d have done what bandits always do. They’d have taken what they wanted and left us alone.”
Clearly this was going nowhere. Shahin cast a sidelong glance at Knight-Sergeant Heartwood, who was unreadable and stoic-faced as ever, and Knight-Adept Autumnlight, who looked somewhere between embarrassed and apologetic. Slowly, his attention shifted from his two Knights to the assembled crowd of townsfolk. In their faces he saw the same things he’d seen his entire life; fear, dismay, sadness, anger, and some smatterings of hope. As the two men devolved into an argument again, Shahin pushed his way in between them and decided to address the group as a whole.
“Listen to me, all of you.” He was having to project a bit to ensure he could be heard over the bickering duo behind him. “You do not know me, but I know you. I have seen your faces before because I was one of you.” Suddenly, the arguing behind him died down. “I was born a farmer’s son in the south of Quel’thalas. I know what it is to live as you do, to live in a state of constant fear. Fear that the crops will not yield enough harvest, fear that the rains will not come, fear that one day a roving band of Trolls will decide that your family suddenly looks appetizing.”
All eyes were on him now.
“Your elder is correct. We bloodied the bandits and now they will be sure to return, angry and seeking revenge. It is the Sunguard’s intent to safeguard your village, but we lack the resources to protect the outlying farmlands. For this reason, yes, we have asked you to relocate. Yes, it is likely your farms will burn and your crops will be destroyed.” A quiet murmur rippled through the crowd. “But farms can be rebuilt. Tools can be mended. Crops can be replanted. Your lives and the lives of your families, however, are not so easily replaced. We are confident we can hold the village against any reprisal.”
“Then why,” demanded Wiarrin, “are you asking our people to fight?!”
Shahin sighed.
“Because the Sunguard won’t always be here to defend your village for you. With all the woes of the world, we cannot keep a permanent force stationed here. Not even a token one.” He leveled his gaze squarely on Wiarrin. “If you learn to defend yourselves, you won’t need us ever again.”
The old man sputtered for a moment, looking indignant as anger rose to his cheeks. “And with what, exactly, are we to fight? Pitchforks? Shovels? We’re farmers! We have no weapons!”
A smile crept across Shahin’s face. He reached toward the Knight-Sergeant with his left hand and silently gestured to his colleague. Within a moment, he had what he needed gripped firmly in his hand.
“With this,” he said, holding it above his head, “the simple spear.” Shahin offered the spear to Wiarrin and gestured for him to take it. The old man warily accepted.
“The weapon you have in your hand has won more wars than any cannon, any siege weapon, any magic, or any knight ever has in the history of warfare. The spear is effective and it’s inexpensive, ranging from something as elaborate as a halberd or a ranseur to something as simple as a sharpened piece of wood. We will teach you to march. We will teach you discipline. We will teach you to fight.”
His attention fell again upon the silenced crowd before him. “Those of you who wish to help form the Silverbrook Militia and learn to protect your homes and your lives may speak with Knight-Sergeant Heartwood and Knight-Adept Autumnlight. We will accept any and all volunteers. If you want a place, we will secure one for you. Those of you who do not wish to pursue this path may do so without reprimand. No one will conscript you.”
The murmur had elevated to a low roar now as the crowd began to talk amongst themselves now. Already a few villagers had begun to step forward and approach Autumnsun, who now looked as much relieved as she was happy. Satisfied that the situation was now resolved, Shahin exhaled a breath and began to casually stroll back the way he and the Knight-Sergeant had come.
“Keep me posted on recruitment numbers, if you please. The Knight-Commander will be keen to know what resources we have available to us.”
Heartwood nodded and, as Shahin rounded the corner and disappeared out of sight, added:
“I thought you were going to throw me out a window if I brought you more paperwork.”
