Starlight Rose

And it's a huge symbol in Umbral. As a romantic, of course their unique beauty enthralls Elu. But for the story, the roses offer beats of traditional romance as well as something a bit more nuanced—fragility: Elu's cosmic curiosity, her eventual Void transformation, and sexual identity, and overall, the theme of her story arc with Zevvie.

The flower's petals twinkle like the stars at night, hence its name. If not handled carefully, the flower dissipates into dust.

Before Elu came to Netherlight, she read up on the history of The Broken Isles and the unique things it had to offer, including flora. When she meets Zevvie for the first time in the Netherlight library, they immediately bond over a love for books and languages, particularly Shath'Yar, and of course the mysteries of the Isles. But the connection starts to really bloom when Zevvie surprises her with a late-night adventure to Meredil, where a lot of the roses are found.

By this point, Zevvie is already seeing Elu with curiosity and feeling—something that starts with their first interactions in the library. But in true Zevvie nature, with her overall themes of honor, she isn't going to push. Especially because even with hints of reciprocation, Elu is only starting to grapple with her identity. And in Zevvie's mind, Elu's presence already carries a significance that transcends the need to define it. I love her.

The scene definitely has romantic energy, and the roses symbolize not only her feelings and Elu's own growth, but also inspire them to create their secret language, Lunaris.

And that is just the beginning—basically the biggest understatement ever.
