French Politics Update

Since the 2024 French elections earlier this year, we left off with a more balanced National Assembly. Left-wing politicians became the highest population at 188 seats with centrist Emmanuel Macron still the president. The centrist party is not far behind with 161 seats and the right-wing party with 142.

Many networks at the time discussed the expectation of a hung parliament, as no one party holds the 289-seat majority.

Some things stay the same. In July, the National Assembly voted to keep centrist party member Yaël Braun-Pivet as speaker, winning by 13 votes. Additionally, many people have called for Macron to step down as President, but he will likely stay for the rest of his term until 2027. 

New PM

On the other hand, there have been major changes. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal resigned in July, and was replaced by Michel Barnier in September. He is a conservative, the leader of the 2016-2019 Brexit negotiation, and his appointment was met with much criticism from the left-wing parties.

Days after his appointment, over 100,000 people participated in protests across France. Many people view President Macron’s PM choice as disruptive to democracy, as the PM is most often chosen from the dominant National Assembly party.

Macron states that he made this choice based on the belief that Barnier seemed the most capable of dealing with political deadlocks, as is expected of the Parliament with no party holding majority.

I have to wonder, though, if this was also out of spite for the left-wing parties winning more seats than his centrist party. Barnier’s politics are expected to rely on joint support from the centrist and conservative parties. If the right or center opposes him on anything, he almost certainly will face loss after loss with his proposed policies. Will this lead France backward after the left finally gained some political power?

Barnier’s Address

Barnier delivered his first parliamentary address on Tuesday, October 1st. Summarily, he emphasized the hazard of French finances and debts, and the environment.

France is more than 3 trillion euros in public and environmental debt, which Barnier addresses first. His goal is to bring the deficit down from 6% of the national GDP to 5% in 2025, with the goal of under 3% by 2029.

His outline for achieving this is reducing spending, being more efficient in government spending (addressing corruption and unjustified spending), and taxes. He phrases higher taxes as a temporary measure, and states that large companies as well as the richest and wealthiest French people will be asked for exceptional contributions.

Barnier also addresses environmental debt. He plans to continue reducing GHG emissions, and for France to be more active in the EU and in the Paris Agreements, which push for countries to collectively act against climate change. He also mentions encouraging industry transitions in energy and recycling, encouraging nuclear energy development, and developing renewable resources of energy more, like biofuels and solar energy.

He has also conceived of a large national conference to act on the matter of water, the scarcity of which is an imminent issue for France.

Additionally, he plans to propose a yearly day of citizens consultations. In his idea, doors will be open for citizens for people of all levels of government to ask questions and start discussions and debates on various topics.

Another noteworthy statement from Barnier is that the pension reform bill voted on in 2023 might have to be changed, which received a loud reply from the audience.

As someone living in a country where an entire political party is built on denying factual evidence and realities, it is surprising to hear someone who does not deny climate change, and calls for equitable taxes to address debt.

About 30 minutes into his address, though, New Caledonia comes up. This is more in line with expectations of conservatives. New Caledonia is still a colonized territory of France, and a recent bill from Macron was going to disadvantage native Kanak people for the advancement of French loyalists on the archipelago. After fatal protests, the bill has been suspended before ratification, likely to be readdressed in 2025.

Also in conservative spirit, Barnier calls for stricter immigration policies in effort to meet “integration objectives”. France faces a cost-of-living crisis and an affordable housing shortage that has buttressed the right’s stance on needing stricter border measures.

Le Pen Trial

Also straining politics, especially for right-wing support, is recent news about popular right-wing figure Marine Le Pen.

On September 30th, Le Pen faced charges of embezzling European Parliament money. The right-wing party Rassemblement National is accused of filing false employee records in order to improperly use funds to pay members of the party. Le Pen is one of many senior party members involved in the alleged embezzlement.

This trial is expected to go on for seven to nine weeks, so the final outcome is some time away. But for now we can expect this will have negative impacts if Le Pen still vies for presidential election in 2027. It will likely also decrease citizen’s trust in the conservative party’s ability to make responsible economic decisions.

If found guilty, Le Pen and the other defendants could face up to ten years in prison and lose the eligibility to run for office.

After the 2024 shock vote instigated by President Macron, the French National assembly gained a left-leaning majority, though not enough for an automatic 289-vote majority. In most cases, this would mean a left-wing Prime Minister as well as a left-wing president, though that’s because the presidential vote is usually shortly after that of the national assembly.

Contrarily, Macron went with a conservative candidate that he believed to be stronger for the job. This increases the political unrest in the country, and increases the likelihood of delays and blockages in legislation development.

While the conservative Prime Minister has stated many intentions that people in the U.S.A. might call left-leaning, regarding climate change and tax targets, his appointment has upset many. His views on immigration, especially, contrast with most left-wing groups who want integration and safety for others. Overall, this decision from Macron calls into question his loyalty and dedication to the wants of the French people.

This is SO, SO IMPORTANT! I genuinely wish I could make everyone read this and actually take it in.

As a PhD student whose work involves climate change impact scenarios, I've read many scary reports on climate change, global warming, pollution and many of their impacts on the natural environment. It's terrifying, and so many people either have no idea or have simply become numb to these constant warnings. This, I think, is where a message of hope and optimism is so important. Because the more people understand that we could overcome this, the biggest crisis our species (and many others) face, the more they might be inclined to put in their effort to help.

I do think that it is equally important to get people to understand how dire the situation really is though. And to build trust in scientific studies and the voices of scientists. And to show our governments that climate change, biodiversity loss, and poor land management are on the forefront of our concerns. Especially as we see governments continuing to back fossil fuels, oil drilling, and improper disposal of waste.

I really want to make a difference with my research, and I want to encourage those around me to be more environmentally aware, hopeful, and purposeful in their actions.

Be an activate for the environment. Tell your local government representative how you feel about their inaction (or action) in regards to climate change policies, and share with them this kind of report.

"Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated...

In the end, I said yes, but reluctantly. Frankly, I was sick of admonishing people about how bad things could get. Scientists have raised the alarm over and over again, and still the temperature rises. Extreme events like heat waves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent, exactly as we predicted they would. We were proved right. It didn’t seem to matter.

Our report, which was released on Tuesday, contains more dire warnings. There are plenty of new reasons for despair. Thanks to recent scientific advances, we can now link climate change to specific extreme weather disasters, and we have a better understanding of how the feedback loops in the climate system can make warming even worse. We can also now more confidently forecast catastrophic outcomes if global emissions continue on their current trajectory.

But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too.

I’m used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report. Human beings have put about 1.6 trillion tons of carbon in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution — more than the weight of every living thing on Earth combined. But as we wrote the report, I learned other, even more mind-boggling numbers. In the last decade, the cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent and solar has declined 90 percent. Renewables now make up 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity. Our country’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, even as our G.D.P. and population grow.

In the report, we were tasked with projecting future climate change. We showed what the United States would look like if the world warms by 2 degrees Celsius. It wasn’t a pretty picture: more heat waves, more uncomfortably hot nights, more downpours, more droughts. If greenhouse emissions continue to rise, we could reach that point in the next couple of decades. If they fall a little, maybe we can stave it off until the middle of the century. But our findings also offered a glimmer of hope: If emissions fall dramatically, as the report suggested they could, we may never reach 2 degrees Celsius at all.

For the first time in my career, I felt something strange: optimism.

And that simple realization was enough to convince me that releasing yet another climate report was worthwhile.

Something has changed in the United States, and not just the climate. State, local and tribal governments all around the country have begun to take action. Some politicians now actually campaign on climate change, instead of ignoring or lying about it. Congress passed federal climate legislation — something I’d long regarded as impossible — in 2022 as we turned in the first draft.

And their passage in mid 2022 was a big turning point: that's when, for the first time in decades, a lot of scientists started looking at the numbers - esp the ones that would come from the IRA's funding - and said "Wait, holy shit, we have an actual chance."]

And while the report stresses the urgency of limiting warming to prevent terrible risks, it has a new message, too: We can do this. We now know how to make the dramatic emissions cuts we’d need to limit warming, and it’s very possible to do this in a way that’s sustainable, healthy and fair.

The conversation has moved on, and the role of scientists has changed. We’re not just warning of danger anymore. We’re showing the way to safety.

I was wrong about those previous reports: They did matter, after all. While climate scientists were warning the world of disaster, a small army of scientists, engineers, policymakers and others were getting to work. These first responders have helped move us toward our climate goals. Our warnings did their job.

To limit global warming, we need many more people to get on board... We need to reach those who haven’t yet been moved by our warnings. I’m not talking about the fossil fuel industry here; nor do I particularly care about winning over the small but noisy group of committed climate deniers. But I believe we can reach the many people whose eyes glaze over when they hear yet another dire warning or see another report like the one we just published.

The reason is that now, we have a better story to tell. The evidence is clear: Responding to climate change will not only create a better world for our children and grandchildren, but it will also make the world better for us right now.

Eliminating the sources of greenhouse gas emissions will make our air and water cleaner, our economy stronger and our quality of life better. It could save hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across the country through air quality benefits alone. Using land more wisely can both limit climate change and protect biodiversity. Climate change most strongly affects communities that get a raw deal in our society: people with low incomes, people of color, children and the elderly. And climate action can be an opportunity to redress legacies of racism, neglect and injustice.

I could still tell you scary stories about a future ravaged by climate change, and they’d be true, at least on the trajectory we’re currently on. But it’s also true that we have a once-in-human-history chance not only to prevent the worst effects but also to make the world better right now. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity. So I don’t just want to talk about the problems anymore. I want to talk about the solutions. Consider this your last warning from me."

Ireland, UK to develop green corridors

NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group announced development of the first green corridors between Ireland and the UK, according to Splash 247.

The green shipping corridor project envisages that NatPower Marine, part of the UK’s NatPower Group, will develop the UK’s first commercial electric vessel charging network to support electric propulsion and cold ironing.

The global network will involve specialised e-vessel charging infrastructure in all eight UK and Irish ports operated by Peel Ports Group. The plan also includes the installation of electric vehicle, van and heavy-goods-vehicle (HGV) chargers for commercial EVs passing through the ports.

Over 3,000 ships cross the Irish Sea each year, emitting 230,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), 20,000 tonnes of nitrous oxide (NOx), and 18,000 tonnes of sulphur oxide (SOx) into the atmosphere.

Under the proposal, the first Irish Sea green corridors include Belfast-Heysham and Dublin-Birkenhead. Meanwhile, The Heysham Port has reduced emissions from its land-based plant, equipment, and vehicles by 90 per cent.

The plans mark the first step in a new £3bn ($3.81bn) global network of charging stations planned by NatPower Marine for 120 ports around the world by 2030. Stefano Sommadossi, CEO at NatPower Marine, stated:

NatPower Marine is investing to deploy the largest global network of charging points to help solve the chicken and egg conundrum facing this industry: shipping lines cannot electrify their vessels if port charging infrastructure is not available, and ports are unable to raise capital for charging infrastructure without certainty of demand from shipping lines.

The loud calls from the ocean had many of the mers excited and calling back, it was the migrating pods, excitement filled everyone as they swam. Windblade was swift towards Chromia who is very clearly pregnant, pulling her mate into a hug, her fins flared with joy. "Chromia! Look at you  radiant as ever, I've missed you so much. And the little one, they have survived oh how they've grown!" Windblade trills, her webbed hands gently caressing Chromia's swollen abdomen.

Chromia clicks and warbles happily, nuzzling against her mate. "Yes, the tides have been kind. Soon, we will welcome a new pup into our pod." Ironhide isn't far behind pulling Chromia into a hug too, excited to see her just as much as Windblade was. “We have misses you, sorry we couldn't follow the pod” 

Kup gave a small nod to Rodimus, drifting alongside the arriving pods, his fins flicking in greeting. the younger mech's called out eagerly just happy to see the older mer. "Steady, lad. No need to get yourself all worked up." Kup's gruff voice carries a note of fond amusement. "The migration's been good to us."

Ultra Magnus drifted slowly with many of the others. Making sure the smaller members of the pod could use the wading of his frame to swim closer so that they didn't waste as much energy.  He keeps a watchful eye on the younger Oceanides.

The migration has brought a surge of energy and life to the shores. Oceanides from near and far converge, their trills and clicks filling the water with the song of renewal. Full excitement takes over as Soundwave checks on Tarn excited to see his youngling who had grown so much over the years. 

Tarn calls out slowly but lets his carrier check him. " The hunting has been good, and the tides they've been kind to our pod." He explains just enjoying being back with his own small group of mers. Soundwave rumbles softly, his large fins gently caressing Tarn's frame. "I'm glad. You have grown." Tarn preens under his carrier's praise. 

Starscream mingled with the other flying fish mers seeing their own now adult pups. As he and Sunstreaker fussed over Sunstorm. "My youngling, look at you! Primus, you've grown so much. Look at you! And those fins - simply magnificent. You're going to have the whole pod chasing after you, you know." Starscream preens Sunstorm's scales with quick, deft movements.

Sunstreaker swims up, his field brimming with affection. "Leave the poor thing alone, Screamer. Let him breathe!" He nudges Starscream playfully, earning an indignant huff from the older mech. Sunstorm chirps happily, nuzzling between his sires. "I've missed you both so much. The pods have stuck together, we have had minimal losses, the ocean has been kind to us this time."

Starscream's field softens, his sharp edges melting away. "Yes, yes, we're all very proud of you. Now, have you been keeping an eye on any potential mates?" The three fall into a familiar, playful banter, the migration's excitement had nearly the whole beach swarming with Oceanides.

Elita swims proudly as she sees the pods, but her eyes land on Optimus who is back away from the group with Bumblebee clinging tightly to him in worry, the yearling pup's eyes darted around anxiously. Relief washes over Elita the moment she sees Optimus and Bumblebee, knowing that he had survived, the little pup that so many had been worried about had survived and he looked healthier than ever. But concern fills her when she doesn't see Bumblebee's carrier. 

 "Where's the carrier?" He mumbles softly, not upset but just a little grumpy at not having his human carrier while everyone greets the migration. Bumblebee seems much stronger than the very sickly pup that everyone feared for after his carrier's demise. 

Elita swims up to Optimus, she was so relieved to see them. "Optimus! It's been too long. And little Bumblebee, look at you, all grown up!" The young pup clings tightly to Optimus, his eyes darting about nervously. "Where's Bubba? I want Bubba."

Optimus rumbles soothingly, his large frame shielding the youngling. "Easy, Bumblebee. Your Bubba is safe, I promise. They will be here soon." He explains to his pup, but a soft smile breaks across his face seeing Elita. “It has been a long orn my friend,” he says while pulling her into a gentle hug. Both their fins flicking in greeting. 

Elita's brows furrow in worry. " Has something happened? And where is...?" She trails off, the unspoken question hanging between them. Optimus's eyes drop with a deep, profound grief. "...she's gone. The tides were unkind, and I..." His voice wavers, the pain still raw after all this time.

Bumblebee's eyes go wide, sensing his sire's distress. Elita surges forward, enveloping Optimus in a tight embrace. "Oh, Optimus. I'm so sorry. I had no idea..." "It's been difficult," Optimus murmurs, his frame trembling slightly. "But the humans  they've been a blessing. They've cared for Bumblebee as their own. They are the only reason he lives"

Elita's eyes widen in surprise. "A human? Caring for one of our young?" She glances over to where Bumblebee clings to Optimus, the pup's chittering and looking to the sore as if trying to find something. "It's a long story," Optimus admits. "But the human has become part of our pod. Bumblebee sees them as his carrier."

Alita nods slowly, she hadn't expected that, of all things a human had taken Bumblebee in as their own, it was almost unheard of. "I see. Forgive me, just a lot to take in. I'm just glad your pup survived,  I know how erratic you were when he was born " She offers the pup a gentle smile, her webbed hand reaching out to affectionately ruffle his fins. “I'm so happy to see you sweet little bee” 

Bumblebee leans into the touch, some of the tension easing from his small frame. Optimus's shoulders visibly relax. The migration celebration continues around them. Arcee swims up her fins, flicking excitedly. "Elita! Did you hear the news? Bluestreak has taken a human mate! Can you believe it?"

Elita-One trills in surprise. "A human? Bonding with one of our own? That is certainly...unexpected." Nearby, Ratchet grumbles as he tends to a youngling's injured fin. "Crazy younglings, always causing trouble. As if we don't have enough to worry about with the migration and all."

Ironhide rumbles in agreement, his massive frame dwarfing the smaller Oceanides around him. "Eh, let 'em learn the hard way. Bluestreak should've known better than to go sniffin' around Prime’s human."

Wheeljack swims up, his field alight with scientific curiosity. "Fascinating! I wonder how they communicate, how the, uh, mating process works. We should study this development further! It could give us valuable information on cross species relationships, imagine the possibility "

Jazz darts between the gossiping pods, " primus Jackie ya been here less then a cycle and already tryin to examine em!, plus dont been Prowler trying to rip our pups gills off, the past few cycles have been tense enough "

Perceptor looks over in curiosity, his eyes gleaming with interest. "A human? The integration of a human into our society will undoubtedly present new challenges and opportunities. Perhaps Wheeljack isn't wrong in wanting to observe."

Megatron's ever imposing figure, rumbles a warning. "I wouldn't recommend it, they are not like us and prefer to keep those matters private" he states while passing by to greet more of his own pod. The chatter and debates swirl around, the Oceanides abuzz with speculation and conflicting opinions. The human has certainly stirred up a school of piranhas among the pod.

“Wait, wait you're saying Bluestreak, Bluestreak took a human as a mate!?” Brainstorm was more shocked than anything,  it wasn’t what he was expecting to hear. 

“Yes!, the human who is currently Bumblebee's adopted carrier” Jazz confirms before even more questions are thrown at the other mers. 

"Optimus, is it true that humans have taken Bumblebee as their own? And that they've been caring for our pod during the colder seasons?" Optimus nods, "Yes, Chromia. Humans have been a blessing to us all. They nursed Bumblebee back to health when he was gravely ill, and have provided food and shelter when the tides were unkind."

Ratchet grumbles as he attends to a youngling's wound. "Hmph. Normally I'd be suspicious of a human meddling in our affairs. But the ones here have earned our trust,  and I doubt anyone wants to argue with Optimus or anyone else about it. They have cured our wounds, treated us for sickness and saved Bumblebee."

Ironhide rumbles in agreement. "The little one's lookin' healthy as a turbofin. And the pod's been well-fed, even through the lean cycles. Gotta hand it to the humans, they know how to take care of us."

Wheeljack's fins are a light curiosity. "Fascinating! I must learn more about their methods, their means of communication. This could open up all sorts of possibilities for our kind! Plus the fact that one has now mated with one of ours"

A loud call from on shore has Bumblebee looking up and calling out, he knows that voice too well. Bumblebee's head snaps up at the sound, his small frame wriggling with excitement. "Bubba!" he trills, darting out of Optimus's hold. The young pup darts towards the shore, his fins propelling him with surprising speed. Chromia watches with curiosity, her field pulsing with interest.

"Bubba? Is that the human caretaker Optimus has mentioned?" she asks, turning to windblade with a questioning trill. She nods with a smile, her fins flicking with a hint of delight. "It sure is, the little bug has taken a real shine to them, and I cant blame the pup, they are all he knew for a very long time. They nearly went Prowl the other day because  him arguing made Bumblebee cry"

Bluestreak perks up hearing their voice off the shore, his fins flaring eagerly. He starts to swim towards the shore, only to be stopped by a stern look from Prowl. "Bluestreak, you will stay here. Your actions have already caused enough disruption, they are here for Bumblebee not you" Prowl rumbles, his field radiating paternal disapproval.

Megatron chuckles, his deep voice rumbling through the water as he watches the younger mer shrink at being scolded, at least this time Prowl was being civil, the best he could be. " Let the youngling be." Prowl's lip plates peel back in a reluctant snarl, but he concedes, watching as Bluestreak darts towards the shore, eager to catch a glimpse of the human.

The various Oceanides continue to observe, a mix of curiosity, protectiveness, and no small amount of speculation. Some even follow behind but not getting too close to the shore, they don't want to interrupt. Laughter escapes them as Bumblebee launches himself at the human, basically tackling them into the shallows, both of them landing in the water with the pup sat atop their chest as he eagerly chatters to them in his mix of broken words. 

" Yes, hello baby, my God you're cuddly today" they laugh. Pressing soft kisses to his forehead, the young pup's webbed paws clutching at their wetsuit. The Oceanides watch from the water, their frills and fins flickering with interest as the human and their youngling interact. Bumblebee chatters excitedly, his broken words a mix of Oceanide and the human tongue. "Bubba! Bubba, missed you! So big now, see?" He wiggles in their embrace, showing off his sharp little teeth in excitement flashing a bright toothy smile.

They chuckles, gently running their fingers through Bumblebee's frills. "I can see, look at those pearly whites." Bluestreak swims closer. He trills a soft greeting, his eyes fixed on the human. He doesn't want to interrupt Bumblebee's time with the soft one but he is happy to see them again. 

They look up, catching sight of the approaching Oceanid. They offer him a small smile, their hand gently stroking Bumblebee's back in a soothing gesture. “ Hello Angelfish,  you're not getting yourself into trouble again are you?” It earns a huff little noise from him. 

The other Oceanides watch the interaction with varying degrees of curiosity and unease. Prowl's fins are still flared, his field laced with disapproval, while Megatron rumbles a low, possessive note. And it makes most of the new arrivals realise that more than half of the pods that stayed back were rather protective if not possessive of this fleshy. 

Optimus drifts closer, He trills softly, drawing the human's attention, and gestures towards the slightly deeper water, as if inviting them to join the pod. The human's gaze moves between the Oceanides, their expression uncertain but intrigued. Bumblebee clings to them, his chirps and trills a mix of joy and contentment trying to tug them further into the water. 

"Bubba, stopped fighting!" he chirps, his broken words a mix of Oceanide and human speech. "Blu happy to see you." The young pup nuzzles against the human's side, webbed paws gently caressing their arm.

Bluestreak drifts closer, a soft purr leaving him as he floats around them just happy to be close. He warbles softly, his tone a soothing melody as he conveys his affection and gratitude to them.

They chuckle, amused by the Oceanides' behavior. " you lot finally stopped fighting huh, good dont need you all upsetting baby" they hum, their tone light and playful as they continue to play with Bumblebee’s frills. 

Bumblebee chirps excitedly, his small frame wriggling in the human's embrace. "Papa! Papa is there, Bubba!" He points a webbed paw towards the towering Oceanid. 

Optimus swims closer, a low rumble leaving him as he makes his presence known. He trills a gentle greeting, his gaze softening as he locks eyes with the human. “helo” his voice is rather scratchy but it bright a smile to their face. 

"Hello, Big blue. I'm glad to see you and the others have finally settled down. I was worried there for a bit." They explained but in all honesty they were just happy that there were no more fights. 

Bumblebee chatters away in his mixed language, eagerly translating best the little one can for Optimus. The large Oceanid rumbles in response, he's content, happy that his pup is happy, even if a small part of himself wishes he had been the one to claim them, he knew that Bluestreak was right, he had been distancing himself from them due to the season. Even now their sweet scent of them was tempting but he knew better. 

Prowl drifts closer, his fins still slightly flared. He clicks and warbles, his tone laced with a hint of frustration. Optimus raises a webbed hand, silencing Prowl with a firm look. He turns back to the human, his field radiating gratitude. He trills a soft response, his movements slow and measured but he doesn't stay at their side for long before drifting back into the deeper water, continuing to catch up with other mers. 

Bumblebee beams in delight. "Papa, happy you're here, Bubba." They are snuggling bumblebee. "That's good baby, he's not avoiding me now" They coo softly to bumblebee. Bumblebee chirps happily, rhythmic waves of the waves seem to make everything feel unreal as he snuggles closer to them. He tilts his head curiously at their words.

"Bubba... Papa?" he babbles, his small fins fluttering as he tries to piece together what he wants to say. "Papa big. Papa... there!" He gestures vaguely toward the deeper water where Optimus watches, his massive frame drifting on the gentle waves in the distance.

a warm smile graces their lips, brushing a hand over Bumblebee's head frills. "That's my clever boy," they coo softly, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Who's that there?" They ask while pointing at Bluestreak and then Megatron followed by a few other mers. 

Nearby, the other Oceanides continue watching the interaction with intense curiosity. Chromia swims a little closer. "They speak so gently to the pup," she murmurs to Kup, her fins flicking thoughtfully. "It's fascinating... the bond they share. I'm so glad he made it, everyone was so worried about the little pup"

Kup grumbles, though his tone is less defensive now. "Aye, I'll admit it. They're good with the little one. But it's still strange, them bein' here, part of all this."

"Papa!" Bumblebee cries, wiggling out of the human's arms to paddle toward Optimus. The little pup chirps excitedly, trying to relay what the human said. "Papa! Bubba... talk! Bubba talk you!" Optimus rumbles warmly, scooping Bumblebee up and giving the human an approving nod. His deep, resonant voice carries a sense of gratitude and calm as he gestures for the human to come closer.

As they speak, the other Oceanides linger nearby, and quietly chatter. Bluestreak, still buzzing with excitement, is surrounded by a small group of mers who pepper him with questions. 

"How did it happen?" Sunstorm asks, his fins flicking with interest, the gold flyer watches with bright eyes rather fascinated over the fleshy and the pup. "I mean, how did you choose them? Or did they choose you?"

Bluestreak flutters at the question. "It just...happened, they are very sweet, were rather reluctant due to our differences but they seem happy" he exclaims, his tone almost giddy.

Chromia tilts her head, her fins twitching curiously. "But...a flesh one? Aren’t they fragile? How do they even understand you?"

Bluestreak chuckles nervously, his fins fluttering. "Well, uh, they were teaching Rodimus, sideswipe, sunstreaker and myself.  A Lot of it is hand gestures, their language isnt hard to understand, just very hard to replicate due to our vocals. Bumblebee seems to do better with it due to him being a pup. And, uh, we’re figuring it out, you know? They’re...different. But it's a good different."

Kup grumbles from the side, his fins flicking in skepticism. "Hmph. Different is one thing. Mating with a human is somethin’ else entirely. Don’t you think you’re rushin’ into this, kid?. Why a human of all things?” 

Blurr wipes closer to watch for a moment. “Yea why a squishy of all thinks I doubt you would even fit with them” he states with a tilted head only to get slapped by Chromia. 

Bluestreak bristles slightly but doesn’t lose his enthusiasm. "It’s not about rushing, Kup. It’s about..They’re part of the pod now, and we had a theory over them. And they seem rather happy to help us, and well mating with one has helped cross some other bridges. But the other issues is our pods have been having fertility issues or not been able to carry and humans don't seem to struggle as much as us"

Nearby, Wheeljack’s fins vibrate with excitement, his field practically crackling with scientific curiosity. "So, how does it work?" he asks, his voice tinged with genuine intrigue. "The communication, the bonding—what’s it like? Have you learned anything new from them? This could be groundbreaking for relations!"

From a distance, Megatron watches the scene unfold, his imposing frame partially concealed by the shadows of the deeper water. His optics narrow slightly as he observes the human, his field carefully guarded but unmistakably focused on both them and Bumblebee. Despite his usual air of menace, there is something protective in the way he keeps his gaze fixed on them.

He didn't want to disturb them despite how his scales felt at the moment, he knows if he holds off on seeking care again he will be sedated to check his injuries. Less he gets put in isolation for the season due to his own stupidity. but for now he'd rather just rest and watch them with the pup. 

As Bumblebee chirps happily, splashing water in their direction, and Bluestreak beams under the weight of so many curious questions, the pod begins to settle into a new rhythm. Tomorrow he decides. Tomorrow he will go to the large building, and hope they could help fix the gashes and the burning from the rogue shark that had attacked him. It had made a decent meal but he can feel teeth still in his side.

Marooned: Chapter 52

Kid x FemReader x Killer

Deliverance

All Kid could see when he closed his eyes was your broken body. He was afraid to sleep. He was shut in his workshop, sick with worry, while they pursued you. Kid tried not to think about what could be happening to you and funneled that energy into making something that would eviscerate your tormentors. Killer had brought him meals every now and then, only to find him clutching your jacket on his desk with his face buried in it, in a restless sleep. Whatever remained of the white on your jacket was smudged with the black and red of Kid's makeup. He was in this position when he got the news they had found where you were being held. From the second he heard it to the second his feet touched land, the Kid Pirates were preparing to raze the small marine base and everyone inside it until there was nothing left. 

Every Kid Pirate was raring to wreak havoc, but before Kid released them to do so, there was one rule: Warthin was to be taken prisoner, as was anyone who was still alive at the end. They cleared the few ships that were docked, making sure you weren't on any of them before Heat lit them up. There would be no escape for these marines. Kid had swapped his regular arm for the one he had been working on. It was bigger, stronger, and tipped with monstrous claws. Killer's punishers had never been as sharp as they were now. Minerva was pawing the ground and snorting, waiting to guide the two of them with her nose. 

The boar took a wide stance, bucking her head a few times before lowering it. Her red-brown fur started to turn a silvery-gray. It was something that you had been working on with her. If any animal was going to learn how to use haki, it would be something as smart and stubborn as a boar. Maybe it had been wishful thinking and a bit of boredom in the beginning, but the more you had trained with the boar, the more it seemed like it was possible. Minerva had only been able to achieve partial armament the last time you had trained. Now, the enraged boar was fully coated in the metallic gray of armament haki. 

On Kid's order, Minerva surged forward toward the main building of the base, haki protecting her as she smashed through walls. Kid and Killer were on her heels, following her path straight to you. They expected to have more resistance on their way to you, but they never expected the boar to have armament haki. Mini had been bowling over and trampling most of everything in her way. She was stopped only by a thick concrete wall, too thick to break through. 

"We'll take it from here, girl." Killer slapped Mini's flank, giving her the go ahead to run wild. 

Kid's massive clawed arm easily passed through the concrete, rendering it into ribbons and revealing a large stairwell. Mini had done most of the hard work for them, rocketing through all the outer walls and leading them straight to you. Every marine that they ran into on their way to you turned to run and was instantly smashed into the wall or crushed by Kid's arm. Killer had the wherewithal to grab keys off the bodies if they had any. He knew you had seastone restraints, which could not be removed any other way. They ran down flights of stairs. The base was deceptively small with a large portion being underground. After what seemed like nonstop running, they finally made it to the bottom of the staircase. There were a few different hallways stemming from the main opening. They were about to split up when they heard the faint echo of what sounded like your voice. They looked at each other, as if verifying that they weren't simply imagining that it sounded like you. 

Both Kid and Killer had renewed energy, that small echo giving them hope that you were still alive. They tore through the guards, the dungeon-like surroundings getting more damp and smelling more like decay as they went deeper. They approached the last cell in the corridor, at first, thinking the only contents were four dead marines. Killer was the first to realize that it was three dead marines and you. In the dark, he couldn't see the rise and fall of your chest to indicate that you were still alive. All he could see was glass held tightly in your grip and the marines you had felled with it. Kid's chest tightened when he recognized the wounds Warthin inflicted upon you. It tightened further when he saw how limp your body was. Maybe they had been mistaken. Maybe they hadn't heard you after all. Neither of them said a word, too afraid that there wouldn't be an answer if they called out.

Killer opened the cell with one of the keys they grabbed from someone. There were already tears in Kid's eyes. He could tell you were dead. There was simply no way for someone to survive in this condition. They squatted down by you, Killer reaching out to feel for a pulse with some hesitancy, not sure if he was ready to know for a fact if you were still there. He pulled away swiftly and caught your wrist as a reflex as he sensed malice oozing from you. He watched the glass fall from your hand, only to be caught in your other hand, and aimed at him once more. This time, Kid stopped you with his devil fruit. The shackles around your wrists were ordinary metal. 

You thrashed against their hold, trying to break your hands free. The tears in Kid's eyes fell over his cheeks. Seeing you like this reminded him of the time all four of them had to restrain you because you thought you had been recaptured. Now he realized why you had been so afraid. Kid tried to snap you out of it gently at first, though quickly escalated to yelling when it was clear it wasn't getting through to you. Killer didn't know what else to do since you couldn't see them, so he placed your hand on his mask, something that would feel familiar and recognizable. He saw relief flood your features as you accepted that the two of them were truly there. 

As Killer went through his key collection, trying them on the seastone binding your ankles, you took off the marine jackets you had put around yourself and struggled to put one of them on properly. You didn't even complain as Kid helped you. As much as you didn't even want him to look at you like this, you needed help. To protect your last shred of humanity, you didn't want to be bare. It was a miracle that you had the energy to slash at them when they first came to you. You were sticky with sweat and your breaths were rough and ragged. You were unsure if you could even stand up on your own. 

There was a clunk and a feeling of heaviness being lifted from you as one of the keys eventually took the remaining shackles off. You immediately tried to use your powers to heal some of your wounds. You didn't want to completely heal them, as it would trap the infection in. You only wanted to heal them enough that you weren't in agonizing pain every time you moved. Nothing happened, your body too tired to function. Through tears, you tried to push yourself up. Against the wishes of both Kid and Killer, you tried walking out yourself, only to stumble from sheer exhaustion and the inability to see where you were going.

"Look at you, girl. Your flesh is rotting from your bones, just like ours. As good as dead. Once they realize that they'll leave you there."

"Stop," you whimpered, clutching your ears to block their voices.

"No one wants a broken toy. That's all you ever were anyway. Just a toy."

Everything was overwhelming you, the taunting, the near-relief, the exhaustion, the pain, the doubt that this wasn't real. "S-stop," your voice cracked.

"You can leave but you will never leave us behind. Just drop dead. It's better for everyone."

"SHUT UP!" You felt your knees buckle under you as you gave in to full-on sobbing, your dignity and pride fully eroded by shame. 

You were swiftly caught by Killer, who scooped you up for the second time since you'd known him. "Hush, darlin. I've got you now. Rest." And just like the first time, you felt safe enough to black out.

"Killer, take Y/N back to the ship," Kid's voice was low, barely counting his seething, boiling anger. The only thing that was more dangerous than an angry loud Kid, was an angry quiet Kid.

Killer nodded, but paused. "I've got just as much of a right to revenge as you." It was almost a territorial type of warning to Kid, not to leave him out. Of course Killer wanted to make sure you were safe. He also wanted to make sure these assholes got what they deserved.

A sick smile took over Kid's face. "Let's slaughter these fuckers." Kid stomped on the head of one of the already dead marines on his way out, completely flattening it with a meaty squelch. 

Killer handed you off to Heat, who had already had his share of destruction. Heat's face softened into one of reassurance as he realized that you were still alive. Killer didn't need to tell him anything. Heat took off towards the ship with you firmly in his grasp. When Killer was sure that he had gotten you there safely, he returned to Kid's side. From the corner of his vision, he watched Minerva flatten a man between her head and a brick wall and rip open another with her tusks. She had the right idea. Killer presented the blood from Warthin to her and asked her to find him. 

Killer sliced marines left and right with his punishers, running through them as her followed the boar. Kid was beside him, using the claws of his arm to rip open the bellies of marines they passed. His devil fruit sent any bullets shot at them, back into the shooters. Kid pulled the nails from nearby furniture and walls, sending them into some of the marines that came after them, pinning them to the walls alive. He was going to save them for later. Killer cut down the door that Minerva led them to, just in time for Kid to yank the gun from Warthin's hands. The man had it held in his mouth, about to leave the earthly plane the coward's way.

"I don't fucking think so." Kid pulled metal pipes from the walls and coiled them around Warthin. "Yer gonna get a much slower death." 

As the pipes immobilized him, Killer leapt forward and landed a solid punch to his jaw, knocking teeth to the floor. 

Warthin spit blood. His speech was strained from the tight grip Kid had on him. "All this for some used up fucktoy." He didn't think that they would come after him, let alone find him. He had severely underestimated how much they valued you. At this point, he knew he was fucked.

Killer hit him again, this time hearing a crunch in his nose. He wanted to do so much more. He wanted to bludgeon Warthin until he was a sludge of unrecognizable meat. Both he and Kid knew that you would never forgive them for taking your prey, even if it was revenge on your behalf. They would make do with every other marine that was left. 

Warthin coughed. "She's already dead. Why do you bother?" His voice rasped.

Kid laughed. "As if she would go out that easily!" 

"She's gonna be real happy to see you when she wakes up." Killer put emphasis on his words as he punched Warthin a third time, watching his eyes roll back briefly. 

"Huh?" He was incredulous. "She- she's dead! I saw her! She has to be!" The blood drained from his face. "You're going to kill me now, right? You're not going to leave me with her, r-right?" He was becoming more frantic as he realized his grand fuck up. He knew what you were capable of before the devil fruit, and with it.... he hoped Kid crushed him until blood spurted from every orifice, because that would be preferable to whatever you would do if you got your hands on him.

Even Killer laughed this time. "I can't wait to see how she takes you apart."

Kid crushed him harder within his metal cocoon. "Ya weren't very nice to our girl." Kid snarled, "I'm gonna watch as she turns ya inside out. Then puts you back together. And does it again and again." With every sentence Kid squeezed slightly harder. Warthin's ribs splintered inside his chest, like green branches being snapped in two.

The man screamed, blood leaking from the corners of his mouth. "Kill me! Just kill me!" 

"PITIFUL!" Kid spat. He smashed Warthin against the wall until the man lost consciousness, barely refraining from turning him into a flesh pancake. "YER LUCKY I DON'T PEEL YER FUCKIN SKIN AND USE IT TA WIPE MY ASS!" 

The two men continued their rampage on the way back to the ship with their prisoner. They took their time on the return trip, Killer let his punishers rest, preferring to use his fists so he could feel the meaty crunch of facial bones breaking under his punch. He and Kid grabbed opposite limbs of a marine and pulled until they felt the joints dislocate. He was added to the group of prisoners suspended behind Kid by metal restraints. Kid sent metal flying, impaling several men and lifting them from the ground with his fruit, adding to the prisoner count. The particularly weak ones, Kid shredded by bombarding them with metal shrapnel. They weren't worth keeping. Kid and Killer kept on long after everyone else had finished, chasing down every last person living at that base and killing them.

A wet nose prodding your hand woke you up. If not for that, you might have woken up in a panic. Mini's presence had immediately calmed you. You could tell you were in the infirmary because of the familiar smell of antiseptic. It was just you and Mini. You dragged your hand weakly across the fur of her head and she licked your hand softly. You let out a long breath, relieved that you were finally safe. Though you were shortly taken over by a suffocating humiliation, slowly sliding yourself over the edge of the gurney and lowering yourself onto the floor so you could be closer to Mini. You buried your face into her coarse fur, grabbing it with your hands, and released the sobs that had been building up, grateful that her fur muffled your cries. 

There was a mixture of anger, disgust, and shame leaking out through your tears. Your skin crawled with the touch of unfamiliar hands. The unwanted memories bubbled through the gouges in your skin where the flesh was beginning to rot. Your entire body ached and burned with various infections and bruising. You reached under the medical gown you were wearing and touched the burning on your chest. It was hot against the pads of your fingers and your hand was sticky and foul-smelling when it came away. The other wounds were the same. You couldn't risk healing it and trapping the infection inside to fester. You could fix the flesh, but couldn't get rid of the infection with your fruit. 

However little sleep you had gotten gave you enough energy to crawl over to the counter and pull yourself up. Your legs and arms shook with exertion and a fine sweat broke out on your body. Mini stood behind you so you could hold onto her to stand and move. You felt around for the various bottles in the cabinets, trying to remember what each one was, either by where you had placed it or the shape of the bottle. They all felt similar. The smells of each didn't help either, as you had never bothered to commit the smell of each to memory when you had eyes. Hot tears reappeared on your skin. You placed your hands over where your eyes had been and willed them to appear. Without even a scarred portion remaining, your devil fruit couldn't heal them. You couldn't make matter, just manipulate it, and eyes were too complex of an organ to render from any other flesh. You slammed your fist on the counter in frustration. Useless. You're fucking useless. You grabbed all of the small tinctures and took them like shots, whipping each one across the room where they shattered, after you had drained them. Fuck it. I don't care. 

You leaned into Mini and walked to the small infirmary bathroom with a few things you grabbed from the cabinets. Gritting your teeth to keep from crying out as you felt the wounds tear open while you moved, you made it to the bathroom. Your breaths were heavy and you felt lightheaded.

"No one comes in." You were shocked by the sound of your own voice, how raw and strained it was. 

Mini snorted her understanding and sat in front of the door. No one was going to see you like this any more than they already had. You pressed your hand to the back of the door after closing it, using your fruit to make it vanish into the wall. Eliminating the door was the only way you felt secure and protected. You sank to the floor and crawled into the tub, turning the shower head on. You curled into a ball on the cool ceramic, letting the warm water seep into the flimsy medical gown and soothe your skin. Now even you couldn't tell what were tears and what was water. Several hours passed before you were ready to proceed.

After removing the gown, you felt around for the scalpel you had brought with you. The two main wounds were the ones on your leg and chest. The skin around the wound on your leg was tender and tense. As you felt it, you could feel pieces fall away. You made a rough mental map of the extent. Before beginning, you shoved part of the gown in between your teeth to bite down on. You could use your power to cut off the nerves to your leg so that you wouldn't feel it, but without your eyes, you needed to guide yourself somehow. First, you couldn't feel much as you began to remove the dead flesh from the wound. As you started to get deeper into living flesh, twinges of pain soared up your leg. Every stab wound had coalesced into one large one during your time in the cell. You groaned and bit down as the pain blossomed. The blade had made it into the living flesh. Staying at that level, you carved out the rest of the degenerating tissue. Each stroke of your blade cut away evidence of your torture and sent a fresh searing pain straight into your heart. Even though you were only cutting your leg, your entire body was reacting. Your muscles clenched and you could feel snot and tears soaking your face. After successfully concealing most of your pain, the gown fell from your mouth as you let out a final shrill cry. You could feel your hands shaking and you put them on your thighs to calm them. The warm rush of blood oozing into your hand was a reassuring sign that the deeper tissues were alive. You steadied your hands enough to tear strips from the gown and tie them around your thigh. Your chest would have to wait until you recovered from this first round of debridement. It was heaving with the breaths you sucked in trying to dull the pain. Using your fruit, you started healing the edges of the raw area, though it was too tiring to continue. 

You sank back down into the tub, the steady patter of water dimming the ache. Whenever fever took hold, you turned the water cold and when the chills returned, you made it warm again. Before you could heal yourself further, you needed to regain more strength. Your appetite was non-existent and you took small sips of water when you could stomach it. The medicines you ingested were tearing your insides up, making you feel queasy and crampy. The exhaustion of feeling like shit, non-stop weeping, and your body trying to repair itself took over and carried you into a motionless slumber. 

Your dreams were haunted by the visage of the last person you saw, just as he had threatened. Warthin's face and voice echoed in your mind and tormented you all over again. Then they would morph into Kid and Killer, saying the same awful things. It wasn't the nightmare of Warthin laying his hands on you that woke you up, but the nightmare of the two people that cared for you the most telling you that you were nothing to them. Familiar voices calling you a worthless slut transformed into the same voices calling your name and you were startled awake, breathing hard and disoriented.

"IF YA DON'T ANSWER ME I'M BREAKIN THE WALL DOWN!" Kid's voice was tinged with worry rather than anger.

You cleared your throat. "I'm- I'm fine." 

"LIKE HELL YA ARE!"

"Just leave. Please," you replied weakly. Your heart rate was picking up. 

A lower, calmer voice answered, "Darlin', let us help you."

"You can help by leaving me alone." Anxiety was building in your chest.

"Are you sure-"

"Leave me the fuck alone!" Your voice was shrill and cracked and the vicious tone shocked you as it left your mouth. 

You heard muffled arguing followed by silence. The sobs returned as you immediately felt guilty for screaming at them when they were only trying to help. Something about the threat to come in had triggered you. This thin wall was your only barrier protecting you from the world and you weren't ready to face the world. You hugged your knees and forced yourself to stop hyperventilating. The water that had been calming was now overstimulating, so you shut it off. Taking a deep breath, you reassessed your injuries. Your leg was raw and achy, but the overall feel of it was better. You shivered at the thought of starting on your chest and decided to do something else. Your face was swollen, no doubt due to the fractures within it. It wasn't noticeable compared to the magnitude of the other injuries until you yelled. There were other aches too, deep ones, in your mid back, where your kidneys sat, in your stomach where you don't remember being kicked but it felt like you had, and between your legs. It was difficult to banish the feelings of disgust and to keep from heaving. All these things were easily healed with your devil fruit, providing instant relief, yet still left you feeling drained. 

You felt around for a towel and dragged it into the tub with you, pulling it over yourself like a blanket. You were going to have to leave the room soon for food and more medicine. The fever was finally starting to break. It wouldn't fully dissipate without you first getting rid of the still-infected tissue on your chest. The tiniest pangs of hunger were developing, a sure sign you were headed in the right direction. You struggled to reminisce on more pleasant times with Kid and Killer, not for lack thereof, but because the most recent nightmares kept clawing back to the forefront of your mind.

The next time you woke up, you were drenched in sweat, shaking, aching so intensely it felt like your bones would snap. The grotesque 'W' engraved in your skin was being seared into your soul. Millions of molten-hot needles were being pressed into your skin. The infection had definitely would its fingers around you again. Maybe you should have rid the wound of the necrotic flesh when you had the chance. 

You blindly searched for the scalpel with your hand, finding it where you left it. Taking a deep breath, you used your fingertips to find the edges of the bad skin. The breath was almost instantly let out in a shaky yelp as you stuck the blade in. This was far more painful than the leg. Your hands were quivering so much, there were hesitation marks where the blade bounced off the skin as you shaved away the dead tissue. You took many breaks this time, respiring so fast that you became lightheaded. Consciously, you slowed your breathing rate until it was safe again to cut. This cycle repeated over again until you were halfway through. With the next cut, you were rushing because your mind was threatening to fade. The blade was brought down too quickly against your collarbone, causing it to glance off and go off course. It was an amateur mistake to point the blade side towards you. It should have been facing slightly away. The blade was beginning to dull, in spite of that, it was still sharp enough to slice into your neck. 

A warm sensation traveled down your hand, dripping onto your chest. You dropped the scalpel and put your hand to your throat, where blood was streaming out at an alarming pace. At first your devil fruit did nothing. You were too panicked to focus. The cut wasn't that deep, it was into an artery though, which had a fair amount of pressure behind it even though you hardly had the blood pressure of a living person at all. You could feel the blood run down your arm and drip from your elbow. The adrenaline seeping into your circulation forced you to have a moment of clarity, enough so that your fruit flickered to life and healed the nick. You leaned back in the tub, head tilted up as if you were looking at a higher power. What am I doing? After a few minutes of calming your body and making sure you were still alive, you were ready to do something braver than you had ever done. 

You gathered up your towel, which now had wet spots from your amateur surgical hours, and pulled it around you. When you were sure you wouldn't pass out, you held onto the tub and stood up. The dizzy feeling lasted a few seconds and when it subsided, you shuffle-walked to the wall, resting your forehead against it. It took longer than usual, but the glow that you could no longer see for yourself appeared and brought the door that used to be there back into existence. Your hand shook as you reached for the handle and pulled it open.

With your first step, your foot caught on something large and immovable, sending you toppling to the hard floor. Landing on your side with a surprised and pained shriek, you heard Mini snort excitedly, though it was further away from whatever you tripped over. You hardly had the energy to stand up and walk at all, you surely had none left now to get back up. There were some strange noises that sounded like something being picked up and dropped, something heavy and at a low height. Every time you heard it, you heard Mini squeal. It almost sounded like she was scolding or yelling at someone. 

"Fuck OFF, pig." There was a groan and then a sharp inhale, followed by the softest voice you had ever heard Kid use, "Doll?" It was a questioning whisper. "Y/N? Y/N!" His voice grew louder with alarm as he picked up your top half into his lap. "There's so much blood! KILLER!" Kid's hand moved the towel away from your chest. "Oh shit. Oh fuck! Wake up, Y/N! Open yer eyes. Please open yer eyes."

Just hearing his voice made you feel secure, but being cradled in his arms was home. Nothing, not even death himself, could take you from your home. All of your anxieties and fear were melted away by the warmth you could feel radiating from Kid. Not physical warmth, it was the warm tenderness of his touch and the caring that laced the concern in his words. Your voice was meek and there was the faintest hint of a smile touching your lips, "I don't....fucking.... have eyes..., you asshole." If you had all your wits about you and weren't barely clinging to consciousness, his words would have stung. Right now, though, you were happy to be alive and held by him again, and that was all that mattered.

Kid exhaled the breath he was holding in a relieved half-cry half-laugh. "Thank fuck. There's my girl." He bent over you and touched your forehead with his as he rocked gently back and forth. Your tough words didn't fool him. He could tell that you were deeply suffering, physically and mentally.

"Kid?" You could feel him pull away, hovering just above your face. "I'm ready...to ask... for help now."

He hugged you to himself, murmuring into your hair. "I would do anything for ya." 

"I know."

1. Batteries Become Everybody’s Best Friend

Battery prices continue to drop and their capacity continues to rise. The cost of electric vehicle (EV) batteries are now about 60 percent what they were just five years ago. And around the world, batteries have become key components in solar-plus-storage microgrids, giving people access to reliable power and saving the day for communities this past hurricane season.

2. Americans Get Cheaper (and Cleaner) Energy

State public utility commissions and rural electric co-operatives around the country are taking steps to deliver better service for their customers that also lowers their rates. At the same time, real momentum is building to prevent vertically integrated utilities from preferencing their coal assets when there are cleaner and cheaper alternatives available.

3. A Sustainable Shipping Future Gets Closer

More than 50 leaders across the marine shipping value chain — from e-fuel producers to vessel and cargo owners, to ports and equipment manufacturers — signed a Call to Action at the UN climate change conference (COP29) to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels. The joint statement calls for faster and bolder action to increase the use of zero and near-zero emissions fuel, investment in zero-emissions vessels, and global development of green hydrogen infrastructure, leaving no country behind.

4. Corporations Fly Cleaner

In April, 20 corporations, including Netflix, JPMorgan Chase, Autodesk, and more, committed to purchase about 50 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), avoiding 500,000 tons of CO2 emissions — equivalent to the emissions of 3,000 fully loaded passenger flights from New York City to London. SAF is made with renewable or waste feedstocks and can be used in today’s aircraft without investments to upgrade existing fleets and infrastructure.

5. More and More Places Go From Coal to Clean

Around the world, coal-fired power plants are closing down as communities switch to clean energy. From Chile to the Philippines to Minnesota coal-to-clean projects are creating new jobs, improving local economic development, and generating clean electricity. In September, Britain became the first G7 nation to stop generating electricity from coal — it’s turning its last coal-fired power plant into a low-carbon energy hub. And in Indonesia, the president vowed to retire all coal plants within 15 years and install 75 gigawatts of renewable energy.

6. Methane Becomes More Visible, and Easier to Mitigate

Methane — a super-potent greenhouse gas — got much easier to track thanks to the launch of new methane tracking satellites over the past year. In March, the Environmental Defense Fund launched MethaneSAT, the first for a non-governmental organization, and the Carbon Mapper Coalition soon followed with the launch of Tanager-1. By scanning the planet many times each day and identifying major methane leaks from orbit, these new satellites will put pressure on big emitters to clean up.

7. EVs Speed By Historic Milestones

This past year was the first time any country had more fully electric cars than gas-powered cars on the roads. It’s no surprise that this happened in Norway where electric cars now make up more than 90 percent of new vehicle sales. And in October, the United States hit a milestone, with over 200,000 electric vehicle charging ports installed nationwide.

8. Consumers Continue to Shift to Energy-Efficient Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling

Heat pumps have outsold gas furnaces consistently since 2021. And while shipments of heating and cooling equipment fell worldwide in 2023, likely due to broad economic headwinds, heat pumps held on to their market share through. And over the past 12 months, heat pumps outsold conventional furnaces by 27 percent. Shipments are expected to continue increasing as states roll out home efficiency and appliance rebate programs already funded by the Inflation Reduction Act – worth up to $10,000 per household in new incentives for heat pump installations. 9. China Reaches Its Renewable Energy Goal, Six Years Early

China added so much renewable energy capacity this year, that by July it had surpassed its goal of having 1,200 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy installed by 2030. Through September 2024, China installed some 161 GW of new solar capacity and 39 GW of new wind power, according to China’s National Energy Administration (NEA). China is deploying more solar, wind, and EVs than any other country, including the United States, which is — by comparison — projected to deploy a record 50 GW of solar modules by the end of 2024.

10. De-carbonizing Heavy Industry

For steel, cement, chemicals and other heavy industries, low-carbon technologies and climate-friendly solutions are not only increasingly available but growing more affordable. To speed this process, Third Derivative, RMI’s climate tech accelerator, launched the Industrial Innovation Cohorts to accelerate the decarbonization of steel, cement, and chemicals. Also on the rise: clean hydrogen hubs — powered by renewable energy — designed to supply green hydrogen to chemical, steel, and other heavy industries to help them shift to low-carbon production processes.
