Out U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg explained the federal response to Hurricane Milton during an appearance on MSNBC’s Chris Jansing Reports Thursday afternoon, highlighting the government’s efforts to assist affected communities while condemning the spread of dangerous misinformation about disaster relief. The hurricane, which made landfall south of Tampa as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday evening, has left millions without power and caused at least six confirmed deaths in Florida, the Washington Post reports. As of midday Thursday, the storm had moved off Florida’s east coast into the Atlantic. “There is an enormous federal response helping the people of North Carolina and all of the states impacted by Hurricane Milton and Helene,” Buttigieg said, responding to accusations from former President Donald Trump that the federal government had failed North Carolina. “If you talk to mayors, if you talk to governors, by the way, from both parties of these states, they are repeatedly saying that everything they have sought from the federal government, from the federal response, they are getting,” Buttigieg added, dismissing the criticism as political rhetoric.

Federal hurricane relief response realities

Buttigieg emphasized the scale of the federal response, noting that thousands of federal employees, including personnel from FEMA and the Department of Transportation, are on the ground. In response to a question about whether there is sufficient funding to meet ongoing disaster needs, Buttigieg emphasized that while immediate needs are being met, additional funding will be necessary for long-term recovery efforts. He pointed out that Congress must act swiftly to replenish FEMA’s disaster relief fund.

Misinformation hampers relief efforts

Trump and several Republicans, including billionaire X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, have been at the forefront of spreading misinformation about the federal response to the storms. On Wednesday, ahead of the storm’s landfall, President Joe Biden called disaster relief lies “un-American” and accused Trump of misrepresenting the federal efforts to support impacted communities. Biden singled out Greene, who claimed the government could control the weather, calling her comments “beyond ridiculous” and “like out of a comic book.” Buttigieg expressed concern about the growing spread of misinformation surrounding the relief efforts. “This is not an academic exercise. This is a life and death response operation,” he said, condemning the false information circulating online. Following Helene, false information about FEMA relief payments and eligibility spread across social media platforms, leading many residents to fall prey to scams that delayed their access to government aid. Buttigieg and FEMA officials had to correct these rumors repeatedly.

Owned Press equals Owned Reality

Reality has more in common with clay than stone, it's more like a poem than a definition. Reality is no truer than what is printed in our newspapers, transmitting across our devices, and even misinterpreted through our own ignorance. Individuals, entities, and even ideas can change how we as a people interpret the world.

The free press was tasked with maintaining a unified version of reality based on truth. Through this lens, western society was able to centralize their societal beliefs, views, and nationalism. The Fairness Doctrine (1949-1994) required that opposing views be provided on all topics of public interest and any individual or group attacked by a report was provided opportunity to respond on the same program.

Congress attempted to codify this FCC regulation twice, but both Regan and George H Bush threatened to veto it. In 2009 the Obama admin came out against reviving it as well stating, "I believe as President Reagan did, that the electronic press—and you're included in that—the press that uses air and electrons, should be and must be as free from government control as the press that uses paper and ink, Period." In 2009, the GOP controlled senate attempted to pass legislature that would prohibit the reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, it did not pass the House.

Keep in mind, the corporate control was never a problem for any of these administrations. Need I remind the reader, that there are ways to hold the government accountable, but there is little to no citizen control over corporations. These admins placed our news in the hands of entities completely unaccountable to the people. Entities whose sole reason for existing is to make money.

Political reasonings on both sides of the aisle for abandoning the Fairness Doctrine are Orwellian in nature, that somehow providing a regulation or law that requires opposing viewpoints will polarize the media or provide control over their reporting. This is of course, a fascist dog whistle. Fascism requires maintaining only one point of view, normalizing no longer hearing opposing viewpoints is the first step towards that end.

A Free Press is only a threat to those who wish to limit the people or hide the truth. There is nothing lost from free reporting unless you are ab individual or organization that wishes to hide their actions from others. To this end, the Free Press is one of the first things to be lost in societal collapse. The people can't learn of the collapse if those tasked with reporting on it are owned by those very people bringing about the collapse.

In late 1994 the Fairness Doctrine was struck down, in 1996 Fox News began broadcasting. It's politically biased and often angry reporting quickly found its target audience. Rather than report reality, Fox News reported what its audience wanted to watch and hear. The news had become subjective - at least on the right side of the aisle.

The first battle for America's democracy was lost as news stations were purchased by corporations that were not in search of objective truth or societal knowledge but ratings, ad revenue, and market share. With the 4th estate in shambles, with multiple versions of every event being reported, all seeped in audience-favored bias, societal reality splintered.

Politicians no longer need to be justified or hold the moral high ground; they just need to have a media mouthpiece say they are right and just. But, with all things in the USA, nothing is free, and so the politicians find themselves returning the favor of favorable reporting with favorable legislature. This tit-for-tat cycle has been going on for over 20 years. But a system under constant abuse will fall apart, we are witnessing the unraveling of societal reality every day.

This manipulation of reporting, this control over our perceived reality, has broken almost every pillar of democracy the United States Representative Republic had to offer. When those in search of power couldn't break the system because of the people, they broke the people's ability to recognize the damage being done and shattered their chances to organize against these domestic and external threats to society.

When I just saw this information I couldn't stop crying thinking about it, and now my heart aches. They were the same age as me, I know for a fact like any other teen they dreamt of their future, who they would want to become, what to achieve, create, wondering if they meet those in the future they can call friends, wondeting if it'll get better when they grow up, maybe wished to leave that terrible place or maybe wanted to stay. How could anyone let this happen, why were they discharged from hospital so easily? And the school, we all know why. I hate to think about how, even with all the progress made, these things still happen.

I hate everyone who have ever committed such vile hate crimes, I wish them in prison and hell. But i would never go down to their level. But I also blame the government, the school, and even those bigoted online accounts that teach their followers hate. In this case LibsOfTikTok, who targeted the teacher of this school, who supports lgbtq+, so they had to leave their position. It must have been the push for this to happen. I think their tiktok account has been thankfully deleten. But i have no idea about Twitter or any other. Please check and mass report them if it still exists. Hungary's investigation of Scientology results in indictments of 11 for tax fraud

As part of a 2017 police raid, the National Tax and Customs Administration (i.e. the Hungarian IRS) seized a large amount of documents as part of an investigation into Scientology.

Scientology is registered in Hungary as a religious association and chose not to adopt Value-Added Tax – this means they do not charge VAT (i.e. sales tax) but they can’t reclaim it either. The problem is, if you are providing business services and you are engaged in commercial operations, you can only do that if your annual income is a maximum of $34,000 USD. Scientology in Hungary claims that all they do is for the public benefit, that they are selling religious services and artifacts, so therefore this does not apply to them.

The Hungarian tax office launched an extensive investigation, looked into their books, interviewed suspects and witnesses etc., and determined that Scientology operations were commercial in nature. They calculated a sum of $1.7 million USD in tax debt, which is basically the sum of all the VAT they did not charge for the Purif, courses, auditing, books, E-meters, etc., for the fiscal years between 2012 and 2017.

Eleven executives and treasury personnel of the Church of Scientology Budapest have now been charged with $1.7 million USD tax evasion (VAT fraud) committed in a criminal conspiracy. The prosecutor is asking for actual prison time to be served and appropriate fines.

According to the investigation, the Scientologists fraudulently and knowingly reported fees paid as part of business transactions (training courses, purification programs, books, CDs etc.) as tax-free charitable donations in order to avoid taxes.

So, the tax authority considers this a knowingly committed tax fraud, executed by the defendants as a part of a criminal conspiracy.

There is no statement from the church yet, but the apologist journal Bitter Winter, perhaps anticipating today’s news, in October criticized the Hungarian government for investigating the Scientologists.

“Tax laws were weaponized to discriminate against religious and spiritual minorities and violate internationally recognized FoRB (freedom of religion or belief) principles,” the journal complained.

We will see how it develops. There will be a trial, appeals, Supreme Court petition etc. So it will take a few years to see the end results.

Prominent right-wing influencers Dave Rubin, Benny Johnson and Tim Pool have huge followings on YouTube and a fondness for the Trumpist talking point that allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election on the former president’s behalf are a “hoax.” That’s not all they have in common: They also reportedly enjoyed lucrative deals with a content creation company that was a front for Russian propagandists. The Justice Department indicted two employees of the Russian propaganda outlet RT on Wednesday, charging them with laundering almost $10 million through foreign shell companies and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The DOJ alleges this was done “to covertly fund and direct” a media company that produced videos whose content and subject matter were “often consistent with the Government of Russia’s interest in amplifying U.S. domestic divisions in order to weaken U.S. opposition to core Government of Russia interests.” The company’s description matches that of Tenet Media, a Tennessee-based firm co-founded by Lauren Chen, a creator for Glenn Beck’s Blaze TV (which fired Chen on Thursday) and a contributor to Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA. Tenet Media publishes content by Rubin, Johnson, Pool and other less-prominent influencers. According to the indictment, the production companies of three unnamed commentators were paid $8.7 million through the scheme. The indictment states two of the commentators were deceived about the source of the funding; the trio all described themselves as unwitting “victims” of the operation in separate statements on social media. But the Tenet Media saga demonstrates once again that Russian election interference is not, as these commentators and their allies have insisted, a “hoax.” It is a fact, a deliberate and ongoing operation by the Kremlin to sway U.S. politics. And the Trumpist right’s yearslong quest to rebut that reality have ended up ensuring that their entire information ecosystem is honeycombed with Russian propaganda. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s 2019 final report conclusively documented the Russian government’s systematic effort to influence the 2016 presidential election in order to help Trump and the many ways Trump’s associates participated in that endeavor. This was an inconvenient finding for Trump and his political and media allies, who had spent years fabricating a complex alternate reality in which claims of Russian election interference or corrupt ties between Russia and Trump and his associates were “deep state” lies. They responded by falsely claiming Mueller’s report had found “no collusion” between Trump and Russia, and used that lie to brand the entirety of the probe as a “hoax.” [...] No one on the right has done more to push pro-Russia talking points than former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, a longtime defender of Russian president Vladimir Putin and opponent of U.S. support for Ukraine. Russian propaganda channels sought to gin up Western support for its 2022 invasion by highlighting Carlson’s nightly screeds against U.S. aid to Ukraine, and in turn served as a source for Carlson’s program. A Russian state TV host even suggested on-air that Carlson take a job at his network after Fox dropped him the following year. [...] But Russia-friendly narratives about the country’s invasion of Ukraine ultimately spread far beyond Carlson. It became widely accepted orthodoxy on the MAGA right that sending military aid to Ukraine is a waste of money, that the United States is responsible for Russia’s invasion, and that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the real villain of the conflict. [...] Russian interests and Kremlin-connected sources also fueled the right’s obsession with Hunter Biden’s business interests and the absurd related allegation that Joe Biden accepted a bribe from a Ukrainian oligarch — both of which right-wing media and politicians treated as major stories, with House Republicans making it the heart of their impeachment case against the president..

I've been hearing anecdotal reports from people that Republicans they know are planning to vote for Harris because Trump has gone completely off the deep end.

I'm also seeing YouTube comments from people saying they're Republican and plan to vote for Harris. (Though admittedly, a lot of YouTube comments have to be taken with a grain of salt.)

But - also - a bunch of conservatives turned out for Harris in Florida:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is pushing harder for a cease-fire in Gaza and demands that the United States send “not another nickel” to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“My view, not another nickel for Netanyahu’s government if he’s going to continue this wholesale slaughter of the Palestinian people,” Sanders told MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Friday.

Sanders’ declaration comes just days after the death toll in Gaza surpassed 30,000 people since the start of the war on Oct. 7, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. More than 100 Palestinians in Gaza City were killed and more than 700 injured Thursday, when Israeli soldiers opened fire on the people scrambling to access humanitarian aid, some media outlets reported.

Sanders, who recently voted against sending more aid to Israel for its war against Hamas, stressed the importance of stopping the “unprecedented humanitarian disaster.”

The Vermont senator argued that President Biden, who has put pressure on Netanyahu and Israel to scale back its attacks, is taking “an important step forward,” but argues that “we need to do more.” Biden said Friday that the U.S. will begin airdrops of aid to Gaza amid negotiations for a cease-fire.

Sanders said Biden should be telling the Israeli government to open borders so trucks of food, water and medical supplies that are critical to the more than 1 million refugees in the region can be delivered.

During the interview, Sanders said that “it’s totally absurd” that the United States is sending humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, but also supplying Israel with the funds and military capabilities to hurt those civilians.
