A decade ago, the world had a brief fascination with José Mujica. He was the folksy president of Uruguay who had shunned his nation's presidential palace to live in a tiny tin-roof home with his wife and three-legged dog.

In speeches to world leaders, interviews with foreign journalists and documentaries on Netflix, Pepe Mujica, as he is universally known, shared countless tales from a life story fit for film. He had robbed banks as a leftist urban guerrilla; survived 15 years as a prisoner, including by befriending a frog while kept in a hole in the ground; and helped lead the transformation of his small South American nation into one of the world's healthiest and most socially liberal democracies.

But Mr. Mujica's legacy will be more than his colorful history and commitment to austerity. He became one of Latin America's most influential and important figures in large part for his plain-spoken philosophy on the path to a better society and happier life.

In his stride now, Rushdie chides the radicals who have failed to distance themselves from Hamas. This is a ‘terrorist organisation’, he reminds them, and it is ‘very strange for young progressive student [activists] to kind of support a fascist terrorist group’. Indeed. It’s been mindblowing to watch the self-styled anti-fascists of the bourgeois left either stay schtum or even try to rationalise Hamas’s fascistic attack on the Jews of Southern Israel. These are the kind of people who think everything is ‘like the 1930s’ – Brexit, Trump, gender-critical feminism – and yet when there was a pogrom that was genuinely reminiscent of the 1930s they essentially said: ‘Well, what do you expect…?’

Rushdie then commits a secular blasphemy – he questions the chant of our times: ‘Free Palestine.’ He himself supports the creation of a Palestinian state, but what would a ‘Free Palestine’ look like in 2024, he wonders? ‘Right now, if there was a Palestinian state, it would be run by Hamas and that would make it a Taliban-like state…It would be a client state of Iran. And is that what the progressive movements of the Western left wish to create?’

I find myself wondering this all the time. What did it mean when so-called progressives waved the Palestinian flag in the immediate aftermath of 7 October? Was that solidarity with the people of Gaza or Israelophobic triumphalism following Hamas’s vile, bloody invasion of kibbutzim? And when activists holler ‘Globalise the intifada’, what are they saying? The only ‘intifada’ we’ve seen in recent years was the racist pogrom of 7 October. Globalise that? Rushdie is right to call for deeper thought, to muddy with pesky nuance the juvenile rage against Israel that has swept the Western world.

There is something undeniably haunting about Rushdie making his plea for reason from his battered, injured face. In the interview the right lens in his spectacles is blacked out, hiding the eye he lost to the savage knife attack he suffered in August 2022. There’s scar tissue on his face. His lower lip droops to one side. When it comes to radical Islam, this man knows whereof he speaks. The inhumanity of this ideology is literally etched on his face. These are the punishments for ‘blasphemy’ in the 21st century: a severed eye, a deformed mouth. And yet still he sees, still he speaks.

No he’s not. Don’t fall for this. Biden will never stop arming Israel. This is a lie to boost his poll numbers.

There are already US soldiers on the ground in Gaza that he’s lying to us about (which is what Aaron Bushnell self-immolated over). He may one day say he’s stopped arming them but you can be GUARANTEED those weapons will continue to pour in. Not until AIPAC is registered as a foreign agent and we have an antizionist president and antizionist congress will we be truly divested from these genocidal freaks.

It is a mistake to conceive of progressives as soft on crime. They’re actually psychotic about punishing crime, it’s just that they disagree with ordinary people about which offenses qualify. They’re the sleeping Shaq when it’s a home invasion, but they are hardliners on, say, racism. Observe that: 1) They love it when racists face consequences for racist actions. 2) They’re passionate about punishing racists to send a message to other racists that their racism is not acceptable. 3) They know that having a racist around increases the chances that racist ideas will spread, so they argue repeatedly that you have to root racists out of institutions to prevent further racism. These are straightforwardly the criminal justice concepts of retribution, deterrence, and incapacitation, respectively.

Well, the worst-case scenario has come to pass. I see a lot of you are taking this pretty rough, and that's valid. Shit sucks. It was gonna suck either way, but this way is certainly more overt. But don't let it defeat you. Do your part to keep and/or build your community's organization. Always fight for labor in your workplace. Always stand up for and support your neighbors in the face of legal authority. Healthy societies save themselves thru collective action, not elected "saviors." You make society run, not them. Build your collective power to meet fascism head-on. I know I will have many new comrades from this day forth. I can't wait to help you along.
