10 More Character Types the World Needs More of
Part 1 was specifically character dynamics, but I’m considering this a sequel anyway.
1. Fiercely independent character’s lesson isn’t to “trust people”
I’m not projecting. You’re projecting. There is a divide wide enough to fit the Grand Canyon between “trusting that someone isn’t lying” and “trusting someone to follow through on a promise”. Most dumpster fire attempts at these characters (almost exclusively women) rely solely on mocking them for the former because “not all men” or something.
Being consistently let down in life makes you hesitant to a) gain friends, b) pursue romantic interests, c) maintain familial relationships, d) get excited about any event that demands participation from someone who isn’t you. None of this is simply a bad attitude—it’s a trauma response. There is no lesson to be learned, and not even exposure therapy can help because it’s a real, legitimate, and common stunt people pull, whether they mean it or not.
So write one of these characters and legitimize their fears, give them someone who proves the exception to the rule, but do not let the lesson be “well they just haven’t found the right person yet”. Even the “right person” can let them down. It's about not becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy by sabotaging a good thing to prove it will inevitably go bad.
2. Conventionally attractive men who aren’t horndogs
I’m going to find every way I can to tell you to write more aces. This is to fight the stigma that attractive people must be attracted to people. Give me gorgeous aces and demi’s, men, women, enbys and everyone in between, who put a crap ton of effort into looking their best, and yet happen to not have a very loud libido. They look good for themselves, and not to impress anyone else.
Give me someone who could have anyone they wanted, gender regardless, and just simply has no interest. Or, they do actually have a significant other, but sex, how hot their partner is, or how horny they are, isn’t their internal monologue. I don’t even care if it’s unrealistic, it’s annoying to read.
And, you know, giving men male characters who aren’t thinking about sex all the time can be good, right? Right?
3. Manly warrior men who also write poetry
A.K.A Aragorn, Son of Arathorn. Just give me more Aragorns, period. This dude is either covered in filth, blood, guts, and the last 30 miles of rugged terrain, or singing in Elvish at his own coronation while pink flower petals fall. A man can be both, and still be straight.
A man can also drink Respect Women juice, you know? He ticks off all the boxes—he’s gentle when he needs to be, not afraid to hide his emotions, kind to those who are vulnerable and afraid and need a strong figure to look up to, resolute in his beliefs, skilled and knowledgeable in his abilities without being arrogant or smug, and the first boots on the battlefield, leading from the front.
4. Characters who are characters when no one is watching
This is less a specific type and more a scene that doesn’t get written enough. This whole point comes from Pixar’s Cars. I. Love. This. Movie. It’s not Pixar’s best, for sure, but this is my comfort movie. The best scene, one that’s so unique, is when Doc (aged living legend) thinks he’s alone when he rolls out onto the dirt race track and comes alive tearing around the oval.
This character’s unbridled, unabashed glee and euphoria at proving to himself that he’s still got it, when he’s completely unaware of his audience, is perfection. Not enough credence is given to characters to just… enjoy being themselves. He’s not doing it to prepare for the climactic race, he’s not doing it for the plot, he’s doing it just to do it, not even to prove Lightning wrong—just for himself.
Give your characters a “Doc Racing” scene. Whatever their skill is. Maybe they’re a dancer, a skater, a swimmer, a painter, sprinter. Just let your character love being alive.
5. Characters whose neurodivergence isn't “cute”
A.K.A. Lilo Pelekai from Lilo and Stitch. Really, her relationship with Nani is peak sibling writing. But Lilo herself is just so realistic with how she interacts with the world, how she interprets her relationships with her so-called friends, how she organizes her thoughts and rationalizes what she can’t quite understand, and how friggen smart she is for an… 11-year-old?
But she’s not “cute”. As in, she wasn’t written by generic Suits who were trying to cash in on the ND crowd by writing what they think will sell, but also making her juuust neurotypical enough to still be palatable by the rest of the audience. Lilo’s earnestness is what endears her to everybody. But also, she doesn’t get a free pass for her behavior, either. Her “friends” aren’t forced to accommodate her and Nani isn’t written as the cold-hearted villain for trying to discipline her.
6. Straight male characters with female friends
Am I double-dipping a bit here? Yes. While I completely understand how tempting it can be, this type of character is in dire need of exposure and representation to prove it’s possible. No weird tense moments, no double-glances when she isn’t looking, no contemplations about cheating on his girlfriend (and no insecure jealous girlfriend either). Just two characters who enjoy each other’s company and are able to coexist in a space and be in each other’s spaces without hormones getting in the way. Peak example? Po and Tigress from Kung Fu Panda.
Let these two rely on each other for emotional strength in times of need, let them share inside jokes, let them have a night alone together at a bar, at home, cooking dinner, getting takeout, talking on the patio in a porch swing… with zero “will they/won’t they.”
7. The likable bigot
I’m actually on the fence with this one but it’s something I also don’t see done often enough and I’m adding it for one reason: Bigots aren’t always obvious mustache-twirling villains and the little things they do might seem inconsequential to them, but are still hurtful. So showing these characters is like plopping a mirror down in front of these people and, I don’t know, maybe something will click. They don’t have to be MAGAs to be dangerous, and only writing the extremes convinces the moderates that they aren’t also the problem.
Example: I have a “friend” who recently said something along the lines of “I have lots of gay friends” followed up shortly by “I don’t think this country should keep gay marriage because it’s a slippery slope to legalizing pedophilia.” You know. The quiet part being that she *actually* thinks being gay is as morally abhorrent as being a pedo. But she totally has lots of gay friends. Including one who was driving her during that conversation. (It’s me. Hi. I’m apparently the problem, it’s me.)
She’s absolutely homophobic, but the second she stops announcing it, she’s a very bubbly person. She’s a ~likable~ bigot and thus thinks she can distance herself from the more violent ones.
8. The motherly single father
I say “motherly” merely as shorthand for the vibe I’m going for here. “Motherly” as in dads who aren’t scandalized by the growing pains of their daughters, and who don’t just parent their sons by saying “man up boys don’t cry”. Dads who play Barbie with their kids of either gender. Dads who go to the PTA meetings with all the other Karens and know as much if not more than they do about the school and their kids’ education.
Dads who comfort their crying kids, especially their sons. Dads that take interest in “feminine” activities like learning how to braid their daughter’s hair, learning different makeup brands, going on nail salon trips together. Dads who do not pull out the rifle on their daughter’s new boyfriend and treat her like property. Dads who have guy friends that don’t mock him and call him gay. Dad who does all this stuff anyway and is *actually* gay, too, but the emphasis is on overly sensitive straight men’s masculinity here.
Wholesome dads: a shocking amount of single-parents to female anime protagonists.
9. The parent isn’t dead, they’re just gone
Treasure Planet is an awesome movie in its own right, but what’s even better? This is a Disney movie where the parent isn’t dead, he’s just a deadbeat who abandoned his son and isn’t at all relevant to the plot beyond the hole he left behind for Jim to fill. The only deadbeat dads Disney allows are villains and those guys are very vigorously chasing an aspiration, that aspiration just doesn’t include quality fatherhood. Or motherhood. Disney has yet to write a deadbeat mom, I’m almost certain.
I just wrote a post about the necessity of the “dead parent” cliche, but what is perhaps more relatable because it’s more common, and what earns even more sympathy and underdog points for the protagonist? The hero with the parent who left. Then there’s a whole extra layer of angst and trauma available when your hero can now plague themselves with the question of if the parent leaving is their fault. Death is usually an accident. Choosing to abandon your kid is on purpose.
10. Victim who isn’t victim-blamed or told by their friends (and the narrative) to forgive their abuser
Izuku Midoriya lost so much support from me the moment he told his friend, bearing the consequences of domestic violence across half his face, that Midoriya thinks he’ll be ready soon to forgive his abomination of a father. I am firmly in the “Endeavor is a despicable human and hero” camp and no I’m not taking criticism. I audibly gasped when I heard this line and realized Deku was serious. Todoroki needs friends like the Gaang to remind him that he's allowed to hate the man who's actions caused the burn scar across his f*cking face.
I understand that the mangaka apparently didn’t anticipate the vitriolic backlash toward Endeavor during his debut and reveal of his parenting tactics but the tone-deafness of telling a fifteen year old with crippling emotional management issues and a horrible home life that his abusive dad in any way deserves and is entitled to forgiveness on the grounds of being related is disgusting.
Take it back further to a more famous Tumblr dad: John Winchester. Another despicable human who got retroactively forgiven by his sons after his death in a “he wasn’t so bad, he really did try” campaign. It’s one thing if the character believes it, it’s a whole different matter if the narrative is also pushing this message.
Katara is a perfect example: She lets go of her grudge for her own peace of mind and stops blaming Zuko for something he had no hand in, stops blaming him simply because he’s a firebender and he’s around to be her punching bag. She doesn’t forgive the man who killed her mother, because that man doesn’t deserve her forgiveness. Katara heals in spite of him, not because of him, and had she let him off the hook, she would have gotten an apology for getting caught, not for what he did (which is exactly what happened).

Are those constellations? Drawn on the wall, supposedly in Lilo’s room? With Hawaiian names?
No. It is important to me that people understand. No.
Lilo has carefully decided-upon interests. Don’t you guys think it’s interesting that in the original movie they could have said, “hey, the little girl is going to have her life invaded by outer space aliens; why don’t we make her an outer space enthusiast?” but they didn’t?
Have you ever wondered why that is? Because again, somebody had to choose what would decorate her room. People had to decide what her interests would be. Ever wondered why they picked what they did?
Partly it’s because Chris Sanders likes fun creepiness and dark silly stuff.
But also, Lilo is a character who’s wrapped up in wanting to have someone who stays.
So she takes pictures of tourists, as if they’re “fascinating creatures” even though they’re people like her. Why do you think that is? It’s because she knows they’re leaving. She’s 7 and she knows that there are people who come to her town specifically to leave. So she treats them like exotic anomalies. Because she doesn’t want the “norm” to be “people leave.”
Also, she’s supposed to add onto her desire for people to stay a certain characteristic called “loneliness.” She doesn’t have friends. Why doesn’t she have friends? Because she’s bizarre. She’s a little weird. She likes making voodoo experiments and she makes up stories about fish controlling the weather and she makes up wacky names.
So the two ingredients you have that make up this little girl are:
Is lonely and wants people to stay in her little world.
Is a little weird and has weird interests.
Her room’s not decorated with “OUT THERE, AWAY FROM EVERYTHING SHE KNOWS” stuff because Lilo doesn’t have an interest in the “world outside of Hawaii,” as a place. Lilo loves her own little world. Her favorite singer isn’t a flashy new one, it’s Elvis, ol’ reliable. Her room is decorated with fish. And fishing nets. And seashells.
She’s not a Hawaiian bored with Hawaii but excited about the literal-furthest-place-you-could-go-from-Hawaii, OUTER SPACE. She’s NOT.
She loves her own little world, and she wants everyone she loves to stay in it, because her parents just died. Just left, out of her life, forever. When we meet her, she’s not a character with dreams who needs someone to believe in her or validate her. That’s other characters. It’s not LILO. Lilo is a character who needs Stitch because she’s lonely and she’s lost people and she’s not easy to love, herself. She’s not a character who needs Stitch the way Ariel needs Eric. Jeez.
She’s a desperate-to-STAY-faithful-and-have-others-STAY-with-her character. Not an “Out There” character.
And that stuffed animal? Lilo does not do pink poodles.

Thanks for writing this essay so I didn’t have to! :D
Just one addition: even in the original English, not all 9 books are by Enid Blyton - three of them were written by Pamela Cox. So using the ‘Enid Blyton’ author name as a brand thing even when it’s not true anymore isn’t exactly a German invention… but the rest definitely checks out!
I’ve been (re)reading the St Clare’s books last week, and now I’m continuing with the books that only exist in German, and it definitely took me a book or two to get over the jarring differences!
St. Clare’s vs Hanni und Nanni
Being reminded of the St. Clare’s book series by a post about the Chalet school book series, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and have a look at the Enid Blyton books of my childhood. Which made me discover quite some interesting (well, at least to me) facts about the original works of Enid Blyton and their German ‘translations’. In this essay I will...
Yes, I actually wrote an essay nobody asked me for on a school series.
Let’s take St. Clare’s as an example, even though you may take almost every series Blyton wrote and discover it being handled the same way in Germany.
St. Clare’s was and still is published as the “Hanni und Nanni” series in Germany. Which brings us to the first pressing question: Who the heck are Hanni and Nanni?
Apparently the German publisher, Schneider, didn’t really care for British names (and places, but I’ll get back to that later) and decided to almost completely rename every character involved. Goodbye Patrica “Pat” und Isabel O’Sullivan and welcome Hanna “Hanni” and Marianne “Nanni” Sullivan. Seems like getting rid of the O’ made their last name perfectly fine to be perceived as German. (Fun fact: It’s not. Not at all.) Surnames, especially those of the teachers made it almost unscathed - Ms. Jenks is Fräulein Jenkins, but most of them kept their names as they were.
While they were at it with changing all the first names, they noticed that German kids might actually not be able to relate to school books taking place in Cornwall and so Schneider called in the movers and transferred the whole boarding school to Germany. Much more relatable that way! Welcome to “Lindenhof” (TIL that the English word for Linde is “lime tree” and my brain stopped for a moment, because I read about lime trees before and always thought of the green citrusy fruit bearing type of tree. That sometimes happens if you’ve learned big chunks of a language without any translation at all, but still.. mind boggling. Ok, going back to the school named “Lime tree yard” again...)
The Lindenhof is placed somewhere in Southern Germany and while I can’t remember if it is an actual castle in the books, it is depicted as one in the films. (Yes, there are films. Several of them.) I can’t find out if the original series takes place in something like Caerhays, but the Germans, obviously fond of the posh castle school look, definitely went for it.
Now we have Hanni and Nanni, sent against their wills to a castle like boarding school in southern Germany. Time to start translating the actual storyline Enid Blyton wrote, don’t you think? Actually... no. You see, moving the boarding school took some time and while the original books started out in the 40s, by the time the Lindenhof got placed in Germany, we were in the 60s. Gone are the ugly grey school uniforms, changed to bell-bottoms and striped shirts (no school uniforms in Germany). No gramophones, but record players. No jazz music, but Schlager (pity, I say!). No Lacrosse (most Germans won’t know a thing about this sport even nowadays), but handball.
Picture this... we now have books that clearly claim to be written by Enid Blyton, that use different names, places and a completely different era. Can’t get worse, can it?
It can. While there are only nine original St. Clare’s books available in the UK, there are twenty-seven of them published in Germany. This isn’t done by the fantasy literature way as it is often done in Germany - one English book is published as two German ones (this will forever bug me when talking about the GoT books with Germans), it was done by simply getting another author (still doing research on them) to write additional German books for the Hanni und Nanni series. The additional ones where published between the books that are - let’s say loosely, because there are whole chapters missing - based on the original ones and all of them are published as Enid Blyton’s works.
I’m taking a break now.
tl;dr: The German Enid Blyton books that children all around the country came (and still come) to love and grew up with are actually fanfiction. If someone from Germany would have the chance to speak to Enid Blyton about her books, both would probably end up very confused.
Thanks to @fortytworedvines for making me fall into the rabbit hole of Enid Blyton books.

Hello Miss Raven! I always enjoy reading your thoughts and explanations on various twst topics! I'm not sure if someone asked before since I'm relatively new to your blog.
Do you have any speculations or wishes for the setting in the next Helloween event? Like which movies have a higher chance to be a part of Twisted Wonderland. My personal wish event would be based on the "The Black Cauldren" from 1985 or on "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" from 1949.
I hope you have a nice day/night!
Hello and welcome to my blog~ :DD
I definitely feel like the next Halloween event (for JP) might be another Lost in the Book in order to mirror the one we just had, which was Lost in the Book with Nightmare Before Christmas. Popular speculation right now is that we might get part 2 of Nightmare due to how the event ended with "The End...?" and Boogie's boys scampering across the screen. (More details on that theory here!)
Between Nightmare and a recent Tangled inspired event in the JP server, Wish Lantern: The Road/Journey to Freedom, we know that Twst is not limited to just 2D films anymore. Stop motion and 3D animated films are also now fair game. That opens the floodgates for many more possibilities as to what could be referenced or integrated into Twst's world!
We also know from previous Halloween events that Halloween events don't necessarily need to be "Halloween-y". Glorious Masquerade, while taking place around Halloween time, had nothing to do with the holiday. Playful Land similarly didn't have anything to do with Halloween, even if it did incorporate horror vibes in its later acts. So really, I get the sense that Halloween events could be inspired by literally any movie under the Disney umbrella at this point. I don't think that one really has a higher chance than another, though there may be a bias for more "iconic" and well-known films just because we all know how Disney LOVES to capitalize on nostalgia. I recall that Yana has shared that one of her favorite Disney films is Treasure Planet and she'd love to do something with that for Twst?? (I might be misremembering the second part of that statement, so don't quote me on it.) Actually, looking at Yana's top Disney films, Twst has actually incorporated 2 of them already as Lost in the Book events (Lilo & Stitch and Nightmare Before Christmas). The other two, Treasure Planet and Beauty and the Beast, might also be strong contenders for future Lost in the Books or perhaps another story event, though not necessarily Halloween.
… On a personal note, I would really like a Monsters Inc. Halloween event :3c I think that would really fit the spirit of the holiday and allow the devs to get super creative with the designs.

Rise Characterizations Pt. 6!!!!!!
After the turtles and Splinter, here we have the girl Ever. She's pretty spunky, I had fun analyzing her for writing.
April O'Neil Character Notes
Language Habits:
Uses bae/aave, something she could have passed on down to Raph and Mikey as they also use bae/aave
Most notably uses "mm-kay" in place of "okay"
Uses a lot of filler language, interjections, or onomatopoeia. Think "mhm", "uh huh, uh huh!", "oh yeah!"
"Ah nuts" is her go-to disappointed phrase
Grits and or strains her teeth when she's frustrated
Uses her own name (the full "April O'Neil!!!!") as a battle cry, or brings her name as a motivator i.e. "the one and only April O'Neil will solve this case!"
The more worked up she the louder she tends to be, this extends to stronger emotions such as passion or panic
Over text uses emoticons
Refers to splinter as "splints"
Refers to the turtles as "the fam"
Refers to villains/antagonists through insults rather than their names
Personality:
Adrenaline junkie, as she's often the first to jump into a fight. She also laughs in the face of danger, and was seen maniacally laughing and smiling the entirety of the gumbus episode
Jack of all trades. April has a lot of skills she's picked up from various jobs or personal adventures she's seeked out (like canoeing through the sewers in a hazmat suit and earning a crane license)
Wild and blunt. April is Loud, and rarely ever afraid to share her opinion. This can either make people draw back from her bluntness or be drawn in by her excitableness
Self-conscious. Despite her strong sense of self-esteem, April is still often motivated to impress the popular kids at school or at least fit in. She doesn't want to be seen as the weird kid, or associated with the weird kids
Persistent. April is always quick on her feet to hit back whatever comes at her. She has a good set of problem-solving skills that she's gained from all the skills she's picked up
Loyal. She's always willing to back up the turtles, and goes out of her way to keep Splinter happy with her company. Once she finds a friend it's hard to pry her away
Unlucky. Mostly in absurd or mundane ways. She has that whole curse with her birthday, but things don't often tend to go right for April O'Neil, which contributes to the disasters that cause her to get fired all the time
Miscellaneous:
Code-named "yellow submarine" by raph
Tends to have information on wifi passwords, secret exists, and access to keys from all the jobs she's been hired and fired from

Just an end note to all of you who aren't black, some offensive tropes I would stray from is making April the angry black girl. This is one of the most common stereotypes of black women in media. I wouldn't mistake April's passion or loudness for aggression. It would be a disservice to dilute her lively character into familiar but ultimately harmful tropes in media.
I am in no way saying you cannot portray April as angry, this is a powerful emotion and it should be explored with black characters, but I am saying that should not be the base of her character. Because well that's not even April's base. She's centered around fun and thrill-seeking.
Wikipedia (yes I know, But they have proven to be more dependable these past years) has a good article on the angry black woman stereotype, so that would a good place to start research on what to Avoid. In my splinter post I also provided some links on doing research on writing poc.

The fandom always says that Percy's favorite movie is The Little Mermaid or Finding Nemo. Well I call bullshit. No matter what anyone says I know that Percy's favorite movie is Lilo & Stitch.
Look me in the eye and tell me that you cannot imagine little Percy constantly rewatching this movie about a definitely autistic girl who is perceived as "weird" by everyone around her and has to watch the adult figure in her life struggle to keep them afloat but has everything turn out fine for her in the end when she gets a new found family including people who are just as "weird" as she is.
Seriously, try to tell me that this wouldn't become Percy's favorite movie of all time.
#i swear to god I need to write a fanfic where Percy shows Annabeth this movie for the first time and both of them end up sobbing by the end#percy jackson#percy pjo#percy jackon and the olympians#pjo fandom#pjo#pjo series#rick riordan#chb chronicles#pjo books#pjo book series#lilo stitch#lilo and stitch#percyjackson#percy series#percy#adhd#autism#neurodivergence#neurodivergent#neurodiversity#neurodivergencies#neurospicy#pjo percy
