For the purposes of this post, the children are Bear(7), Bug(4) and Mouse(1).

Bear: MUMMY AND DADDY. Bug wants company in the bathroom

Me: daddy will do it, I’m cooking dinner and I’ve got Mouse!

Mouse: (standing on a chair furiously screaming at the kitchen sink because water cannot be scooped with a sieve)

(Keeping Bug company in the bathroom usually involves reading The New Complete Guide to Self Sufficiency to them for about 15 minutes, boringly)

Dr Glass: I have a mysterious toe-related injury.

Me: I’ll do it! You make chicken piccata with Mouse!

Mouse: (still cannot scoop water with a sieve and making this everyone else’s problem)

Dr Glass: … I’ll do Bug.

Me: we really need to give Bug more confidence to be alone in the bathroom before they go to school

Bear: (in an infinitely world weary tone) I’ll say!

Dr Glass: (halfway up the stairs) hey that would be a good project for you Bear, you could give Bug your confidence

Me: yeah Bear! Be the change you want to see in the world.

Bear: the change I want to see in the world is having EVERYONE BE TREATED EQUAL AND NO DIFFERENCE between POOR PEOPLE AND RICH PEOPLE

Me: oh wow.

Bear: it would be a waste of my WISH.

Me: what a good wish…. Where did it come from?

Bear: (infinitely world weary) I have lived in this town for SEVEN YEARS!!!
