Headcanons: How knowledgeable are the MI6 staff about the workplace gossip mill?
OK, just ONE more headcanons post before Fest is done!
This one is about our favorite characters and their ability (or lack thereof) to stay abreast of the hot goss circulating at HQ.
Moneypenny: THE gossip queen of MI6. Knows all, sees all, but does not TELL all. She always has the 411 on what's going on with MI6 personnel, but she's very discreet. She plays her cards close to her vest, and generally turns a blind eye to matters that do not concern her, M, important political matters, or internal security. Still, whether she discloses her knowledge or not, she absolutely knows which canteen worker spent the night with which member of Accounting while his wife was out of town. 👀
Bond: Very good at keeping his finger on the pulse and his ear to the ground. Generally very knowledgeable about the MI6 gossip mill. However, he is hamstrung by the fact that he spends so much of his time abroad. He has several key employees (well-placed in various departments) that he checks in with whenever he returns to HQ. He applies to Moneypenny as well and tries to weasel information out of her. Nine times out of ten, his sources help him stay up to date!
(After his retirement from the double-oh sector, Bond and Moneypenny develop a hand-in-glove relationship. Bond scouts around and collects gossip from satellite government offices and various London hotels. Meanwhile, Moneypenny collects intel from committee meetings and whispers in the halls outside M's office. Then she and Bond have lunch meetings to swap intel. Bond is a great asset to Moneypenny's gossip empire!)
Q: Perennially oblivious to gossip. Knows literally Nothing about who is shagging whom, or who has a workplace beef with whom. He is VERY busy and important and occupied with everything from complex mathematical equations to budget proposals! He simply has NO TIME to dawdle in the breakroom and no desire to go to after-dinner drinks with the minions! He wants to go home to his cats and SLEEP!
Anyway, this leads to awkward situations where Q attends the office holiday party and naively asks a fellow department head if her husband is in attendance...not realizing that this particular employee had a quiet (though very bitter and contentious) divorce four months prior. Oops! R and Moneypenny take to briefing Q on a regular basis to help him avoid these embarrassing lapses.
R: Extremely knowledgeable about all goings-on in Q-branch. She is, however, utterly indifferent to anything outside her own kingdom. Could not care less whether that man in Accounting is cheating on his wife. However, she knows all there is to know about what the R&D interns and ballistics techs get up to in their free time.
Tanner: He oversees literally all Internal Security business and receives regular updates from multiple people (Moneypenny included). So he is very much up to date. Not interested in gossip for gossip's sake, though. He just wants to be sure nobody is doing anything that will jeopardize national security or leave MI6 open to a sexual harassment lawsuit. When it comes to personal matters between consenting individuals...well. Tanner is very expert at turning a blind eye.
He saw Bond and Q flirting while fondling a gun that Q was passing over to Bond? No, he didn't. He happened to be looking at the wall clock, and he saw NOTHING. Thank you for your understanding!
Mallory: I feel like Mallory is always on the cutting-edge of political gossip. He knows EVERYTHING about the movers-and-shakers in the government. Absolutely everything. He is always 100% caught up on that mess. He is significantly less knowledgeable about what his employees get up to, though. Most of his time is spent liaising with foreign intelligence agencies, pushing through requests for additional funding, or fending off the interference of MI5. For better or for worse, he relies heavily on Moneypenny and Tanner to keep him caught up on internal matters.

My department at work liaises with other services, and they are so methodical it’s so funny. I was reading this meeting account to make sure I have the deets before I reach out to the guy, and the notes are like.
‘We met with ‘Markus’ today. No concerns apparent upon initial meeting. Advised Markus of outcome of referral. Markus was displeased and upset. Markus said that this is ‘an absolute fucking joke’. We suggested an appeal. Markus state that we are ‘a bunch of gaping mawed clown ass fish looking dumbasses’. Requested Markus to please not insult us as we are trying to help. Markus called us ‘snot nosed freaks.’ Meeting adjourned and rescheduled.’
It’s like. I know they quote so you know what to expect, I guess... Fwiw scenario and name and insults are made up but the vibe is the same, can’t stress that enough. It’s always just… so professional and then the person saying the wildest insult imaginable in the middle of it. there’s never any warning. Like how am I supposed to read that with a straight face in this quiet ass office. Honestly though? Get their asses Markus for real.

Professional translations & public witch hunts
For starters: If you think "TL;DR, who cares, I ain't reading all that" and are incapable of processing words for a prolonged amount of time beyond 240 character clickbait, you are not entitled to an opinion on translation to begin with.
I will take sufficient time for this one.
General:
In recent weeks I've repeatedly had the misfortune of coming across public harassment and incited hate mobs towards Jujutsu Kaisen's manga translator.
There's hordes of anti-social harassers pushing for someone to get fired from a professional job - in which he works because he is equipped with the necessary qualifications - purely due to disliking occasional translation choices in a comic.
This behavior has reached levels of exaggeration and reality disconnect, it'd be funny if it wasn't so sad due to a real person's livelihood being attacked.
This is not normal and tolerable behavior. It is equal to drumming up a hate mob in front of a café and threatening some employee inside, throwing rocks at the window and demanding for a barista to get fired because you didn't like the coffee beans they chose, or sure, maybe because they put actual sugar instead of sweetener into your coffee.
This is not a normal and acceptable way to behave.
If you think it is, there is something deeply wrong with your perception of society and what's respectful conduct towards another human being. When you encounter another person, you act respectfully at the very least. Kind, ideally.
Feel free to imagine yourself at work, making a mistake and thousands of people starting to call, email, shitpost online and harass you over it, dragging you publicly, shouting on the parking lot for you to be fired. Please reflect on yourself.
Now:
This dude does comic translations.
He did not authorize biochemical weapons in a war. He did not pass a law to deport all migrants and close the borders. He did not accidentally kill someone during a surgery. He did not hack & rob the annual employee bonus' account.
He wrote a word you don't like in a comic.
Planet Earth to Werry hater: Please come back down to reality and dial it back a few notches. This is a non-issue. Whether he makes mistakes or not, this level of hate and harassment is ENTIRELY out of pocket.
Moving on to translations.
Translations/criticizing translations:
Opinions on translations are like assholes - everyone got one. But that doesn't mean you need to pull them out in public. And especially not that you have to shit into random people's lives with them.
I've been reading manga and playing games in private for 27 years. I speak 4 Western languages and A2.2 Japanese. I've been working in the international entertainment industry with a focus on Asian to Western markets for over a decade, including Chinese, Japanese & Korean.
A lot of my time at work is filled with liaising between East and West, internally as well as externally. In my career, I've spent a lot of years supporting and later on consulting on localization.
I know what it is like to be a fan, and I am fully aware of the work reality behind translation.
I'm also intricately aware of the difficulties one faces when interpreting (!) from a source language as abstract and contextual as Japanese to a spelled out language such as English, French, Spanish, German, etc.
You cannot do a 1:1 translation. The nature of these languages is so different, you have to decide on one of many ways to translate something. And oftentimes, the content is so vague with so few indicators, the only thing you can do is guess and hope for the best - unless you happen to hit a rare jackpot of a person who has a guide with additional info and is able to provide this within the short deadline you are left with.
Even the most basic words already illustrate this difference.
Look at the example of
元気ですか / げんきですか = Genki desu ka
Genki is an adjective, "desu ka" is a question particle similar to "is it".
Genki already has many similar variants in meaning: "lively; full of spirit; energetic; vigorous; vital; spirited"
It is commonly translated as "How are you?" but that is not what it literally means.
Since "Genki desu ka?" is commonly used after the initial greeting when meeting someone, "How are you" is the closest equivalent to it in EN, due to it's function and usual placement within a dialogue.
The literal translation would be "Energetic is it?", or "Lively is it?"
That is obviously is no proper English.
Adjusting for grammar, it could be changed to "Are you lively?" - but the "you" is already a "fictional addition" to the sentence, as the original JP has no adress like this.
And asking someone if they are "lively" is also out of place. So more changes are needed.
Further adjusted for "natural sounding" would be "Are you doing good?" which now has 2 additional made up words, to transfer the question from JP to EN - "you" and "good".
This sentence does not necessarily have to mean "Are you good/How are you?". If I tell you my aunt Emma sends her regards, and you reply "Ah. Genki desu ka?" the translation would be "Oh. How is (Emma) doing?/Is Emma doing good?" JP's grammar works without these precise indicators who is talking about whom and is highly contextual whereas - Western languages need those.
Concluding, depending on who is talking to one another, who was mentioned on a page before, etc. a simple "Genki desu ka?" can be anything from "How are you?" to "Is (Panda) doing good?".
There is no literal 1:1 translation possible. The languages are too different.
The reality of translation is unclear source material open to multiple interpretations, once you settle on an interpretation having another dozen options to decide on for the specific wording, then having to adjust that to character and spacing limitations and doing all that with little turnover time.
On top of that, official translations work with styleguides and glossaries.
There could e.g. be a kind of character bible with notes about all characters and their peculiar ways of talking and what character traits those convey and an instruction to use approach XYZ to convey that.
"Speaks in a very poetic way, very roundabout and meandering" which could e.g. lead to overhauling the literal translation to add "personality" based on that.
Going by "(O) genki desu ka?" suddenly "How are you?"for the "poetic trait" becomes "How has life been treating you?"
Again - at the end overhauled again to make room for character limits and such, so maybe it becomes "How fare you?"
This change could have been added not because this particular line offers the exact context, but it is rooted in a style instruction to work with a certain speech pattern/type for a character - since the JP indicators at another spot might not offer satisfactory EN translations, so you have to add the "personality" elsewhere.
Translations of ongoing works utilize glossaries and you cannot use new terms if there is already a term established and submitted. Else it would be a mess of e.g. Cursed Energy in Chapter 2, Jinxed Force in Chapter 25, Hex Flow in Chapter 112, Curse Power in Chapter 156, Hex Energy in Chapter 287, etc.
Even if some months or years in you think another translation would be better suited, you are obliged to keep consistency with previous mentions and cannot just change these.
This also means if you take over translation work started by someone else, you have to work with their groundwork and established rules and terms and cannot change them.
Official translations commonly aim to make a foreign work accessible to local readers. If there is a bunch of teenage characters going to school, they should be relatable to local teenagers. As a result, regional and current slang might be added to make it sound more natural whereas the JP might just have "informal" indicators but less variance in vocabulary. The goal of a translation is to make a work accessible to a whole new language audience, hence the focus lies on making it readable without a prior 8 year degree in cultural studies. Things get simplified or changed for that reason.
Usually translators for a work consult with each other what the difficulties translating are, what possible options are, and what each language will run with. These considerations take a lot of time.
Having fans work out occurences deviating from the OG and explaining the specifics behind is it AMAZING community content and something for the people passionate about a story and about learning more about a culture. But it's not needed for the average joe buying a comic at a gas station.
This kind of deep dive is fandom! Enjoy and share and get excited! Enrich each others lives and understanding of a story! It's one of the best things there is.
Finally, a translation has to be timely & approved. There are multiple people involved in this.
It is not on poor John alone to make all decisions as he fancies and send it straight to print after going rogue, but he works within the guidelines & constraints this jobs brings with it. It's his name on the page but there are a lot more people involved in the final result.
Publicly claiming things like a translator "brutally butchers" a story or "is incapable of doing a job" because in a sea of solid translations of a very vague source language, every few chapters there's a specific word deep fandom who spends all their free-time on this particular story would have translated differently, is wildly inappropriate.
Interpreting differently is not doing a wrong job.
People on social media love attention and shitstorms. You get one narcissist with a following pointing out a debatable translation in a snarky smartass way and everyone wants a piece of the smartass cake.
What I struggle with is how people who don't speak a second language & often barely speak their own language with literacy above elementary school, feel entitled to an opinion here. What makes you an expert on cross-cultural art interpretation? What makes you think your opinion holds any weight here? Oh you read a Tweet by s/o else? *clap*
What makes you think you have the right to go after another person's job for no reason other than spite and some internet gotcha over a comic?
If you really value the creation of near perfect translations that much, be the change you want to see in the world.
Learn another language. Get that degree. Get that job in animanga and do your best.
Or for a start, send a polite mail about your concerns to VIZ instead of starting a personal witch hunt for some guy doing his job.

For @deadheaddaisy. 🎁🥰
It did not surprise T’Pol that Lieutenant Reed wished to meet with her. As First Officer, one of her duties was to liaise with the division heads, and she had found that he was most attentive to that aspect of the chain of command. That was something she appreciated about him, actually – he approached his duties with an admirable dedication to procedure. She also knew some of his fellow humans found that a tiresome trait, and she could not help but have a sense of fellow feeling towards him for that.
He had asked to meet in the armory, and that was where she found him. “Lieutenant,” she said. “You wished to see me?”
“Yes, ma'am.” He folded his hands neatly behind his back. “Though I must preface this by saying that what I am about to ask is not an... operational matter," Reed said. "Though I suppose a case could be made that it is."
T'Pol mirrored his stance, placing her clasped hands behind herself, and inclined her head. "Then proceed, Lieutenant."
He took a deep breath, squaring his already straight shoulders with mathematical precision. "Commander Tucker is my best friend," he said simply. "He's the best friend I've ever had. And in the interest of that friendship, I feel it necessary to ask what your intentions are regarding your relationship with him."
Her right eyebrow lifted in what she felt to be a frankly excessive display of surprise, but of all the questions he could have asked her, she had certainly not be expecting that one. Reed coughed slightly.
"If I am out of line, Commander, I apologize. But...I would like an answer, none the less."
It was within her rights to rebuff the question, and reprimand the lieutenant for asking it. But that seemed a course of action that would only breed unnecessary ill-will. And Trip and Malcolm Reed were good friends; it was an important relationship, and it would be very poor form on her part, she judged, to treat it lightly.
“Your loyalty to Commander Tucker is commendable, Mr. Reed,” she said. “It has been my observation that he inspires such a reaction in those who serve with him. Myself included.” She swallowed minutely. “I would hope that my intentions towards him would be considered honorable. I have no desire to cause him unhappiness.”
Reed shifted his weight slightly. “With all due respect, ma'am… your relationship with Trip has caused him unhappiness in the past.”
That stung, but it was also deserved. “That is a… fair observation,” she admitted. How to explain to him that this time would be different, because it had to be? “I do not intend repeat the mistakes of the past.”
To her surprise, he smiled. “That’s a relief. I don’t think I could stand another drinking session with Hank Williams.”
She peered at him in bewilderment. “Who is Hank Williams?”
“Oh, of course he hasn’t done that to you.” Reed sighed. “Hank Williams is – was – an Earth musical performer. Mid Twentieth Century. Country and western genre. His oeuvre can be somewhat...maudlin. Which means he gets a lot of play when Trip is feeling maudlin.”
She was well acquainted with Trip’s tendency towards sentimentality, and the thought of him engaging in it because of her was horrifying...and strangely flattering. “I see.”
Reed looked thoughtful for a moment before he said, quietly, “He’s very taken with you, ma’am.” She glanced at her boots.
“And I am taken with him.”
“Does he know that?”
“Yes.” She raised her chin. “Despite our past... difficulties, he has granted me his trust. And I do not wish to betray that trust. It is... very meaningful to me.” She swallowed, her voice feeling stronger. “That is what I mean by honorable intentions, Lieutenant,” she said. He nodded crisply.
“Thank you, ma'am.”
He was apparently satisfied by her answers, and she felt her confidence buoyed by that realization. But there was one thing…
“Has he truly listened to maudlin music and overconsumed alcohol on my account?” she asked.
“Oh, not officially,” Reed said. “He's never come out and said ‘I’m wallowing in self-pity because of T'Pol.’ But it was always pretty obvious that's what he was doing.”
“Oh.” She considered that for a moment. “His self-pity can be… trying. I apologize for those times when you have had to suffer with it as a result of my actions. Or inactions.”
He shrugged a little. “It's what friends are for, Commander. He'd do the same for me.”
That, she was sure, was absolutely true. She nodded. “Was there anything else, Mr. Reed?”
“Only that… he seems happy. Very happy. And if that is because of you, then I’m glad.”
T’Pol nodded again, and moved to take her leave. Reed's voice stopped her a step from the doorway.
“Actually, there was one other thing.”
She turned.
“If he… stops being happy, if… if you hurt him, ma'am, I will be forced to discharge my sidearm, and it will not be set on stun this time.”
She lifted an eyebrow. His mouth was pursed uncomfortably, but his eyes remained resolute. Their gaze held, and she dipped her head.
“Understood, Lieutenant. I will bear that in mind.”

“And lo! Here approaches my best knight,” the king announces to the jester as the knight squeezes through the door. The poor jester looks thankful to see her as he hurries out of the king’s gaze. “Come, show me your skill.”
The knight throws a few carefully angled swings for the king. He watches with a delighted expression, but she can see the soullessness in his eyes. Her stomach flips uncertainly.
“You are an excellent swordsman, knight,” he says flatly. “Now, tell me, why should I allow you to stay within my walls?”
The jester averts his gaze awkwardly. Is she about to get fired? “… Because I’m an excellent swordsman and your best knight,” she tries, and the king huffs in his telltale way of saying WRONG.
“Perhaps that was on me for being unspecific.” He picks up a wine glass from the golden table next to his throne, swirling it idly. “I hear you liaise with dragons.”
The knight’s attempt to keep her expression neutral fails miserably. The king watches with keen interest as her eyes widen and her mouth moves in an abysmal attempt to form some sort of defence. She’s acutely aware of the jester watching curiously too—whatever she says next will be the castle’s gossip for the next month. Maybe two if nothing of interest happens before then.
Well shit. Might as well fall into treason headfirst.
She reaches a hand into the front of her breastplate, earning a soft squeak from something inside. The king leans forward on his throne. The jester peers as close as he dares.
Her hand comes back with a short purple string laced around her fingers. Or she does at first glance, and closer inspection reveals her ribbon to be a tiny dragon, yawning and digging tiny claws into her fingers.
The king roars so loud the dragon startles. The knight and the jester don’t fare much better. “Beast!” he howls.
“Beast! Beast! Beast! Beast!” the room echoes back to them.
“You bring this creature within my walls?” he demands. “You slander my name—my rule—with your disregard to my kindness for you?”
“She’s harmless!” the knight cries over him. The dragon isn’t a fan of the racket, and is making a great effort to slip up her sleeve. “She looks after my finances.”
“Disgusting beast,” the king spits.
“The dragon,” the jester says quietly, valiantly ignoring the way the king’s stare snaps to him, “is your accountant?”
The knight fishes a coin from her pouch, gently tapping the dragon with its edge. Its gaze snaps to her gold, its past endeavour with her sleeve forgotten as it grapples for her coin. It twists its body around it excitedly, gnawing at the edge like a toddler, a quiet hum emitting from it as it does.
“That noise it is making,” the king shrieks, “it is going to attack!”
“No!” the knight shouts over him. “It’s like a cat—she’s purring. It means she’s happy.”
“Dragons do not purr,” the king retorts, but the dragon is undeniably making a noise that sounds remarkably like purring. The jester takes a cautious step closer.
The knight tucks her finger under her chin, giving it a hearty scratch. The dragon’s humming gets louder, her eyes closing blissfully at the touch.
“How does it… work?” the jester asks. The knight offers him a smile that she hopes conveys how grateful she is for his interest in the face of the king’s disgust.
“She takes my coins—my salary, my earnings, anything.” The knight adjusts her hand so the dragon sits more comfortably in her palm. She doesn’t seem to mind, too busy clamping her jaw around the gold to notice. “She keeps a hoard no one but her can find. I earned her trust, and whenever I need money she gives it to me.”
“She is a thief,” the king spits, but the rage is losing momentum in the face of such a cute little thing. The knight doesn’t miss how she’s suddenly not an ‘it’.
“I give her all the money she has. She’s just better at keeping money than most humans,” the knight says with a grin, “because she doesn’t spend it all in a tavern.”
The jester snorts. The king raises his eyebrows. Silence falls for a moment as they all watch the dragon get comfortable in the knight’s hand, her tiny body choking her coin, a claw wrapped around her thumb as she nestles in and closes her eyes.
The jester lets out a short “aww,” that’s louder than he probably intended.
“Tsch,” the king says. He leans back in his throne like he’s lost interest. “A beast is a beast. I am most displeased you were disloyal to my word, knight.”
“I apologise, your majesty,” the knight says. It’s all she can say, really. “I will fix things.”
“You… may keep the thing,” the king continues after a moment of intense deliberation. The knight attempts to not to look too surprised. The jester doesn’t even try. “But it is your accountant and nothing more. If I discover it torching my palace I will execute both it and you.”
“Accounting is what she’s best at, your majesty,” the knight says brightly. “You’ll never have to see her again.”
The king nods shortly, though his gaze is traitorously locked onto the purple ball in her hand. “I would not be adverse, knight,” the king says slowly, like he doesn’t quite want to, “if you felt it right to study. We did not know dragons purr, or like coin.”
“Your majesty?”
“Gather your resources and come back to me with knowledge of the beasts.” He waves a hand dismissively. “I will reconsider your treasonous actions if you can prove that your creature poses no threat to my rule or my people.”
A lot of questions are rattling through her brain. “Your majesty, what do—”
“That is all. Jester!” The king turns his attention away from her and back to the jester as he takes centrestage, looking a lot less stressed than before. He gives her a subtle nod and the lightest smile—a small gesture between the servants of the castle, a simple well done.
The knight leaves the hall with the king’s uproaring laughter following her. The dragon stays curled in her hand, and she runs her thumb over it carefully, the dragon’s body warm and prickly to the touch.
A knight to a scholar in one conversation. She doesn’t even know how to write.

I think this is called a debrief? Someone mentioned we need to liaise with the field agents, specifically the 00s who are out in the field. For some reason this is done in the National Gallery (someone called Queue came up with this?). So, I had a wander yesterday to check in on them. It seems that almost everyone is accounted for except two agents, 006 and 008 (but I was told they tend to ignore communications...).
Let's see.
001 present and accounted for. It's a lovely painting.
Does 002 have a particular fondness for gothic architecture?? (Because I do, pls call me)
003 here as well and making me crave a seaside holiday...
004's meeting painting was a surprisingly small one, but boy does it make you feel things about ruins.
005 was a pleasure, mostly because it's one of *my* favourite paintings.
006 has gone dark (of course... 🙄), but...
...007 was there, and honestly? She scares me a bit.
008 is apparently in Dublin, presumably visiting the pubs while everyone here was asleep.
And we round off with 009 and a serene landscape.
So, that's my job here done, time for a coffee 🫡

------
Big thanks to anyawen for this headcanon post, which inspired me to visit these paintings in the National Gallery when I was in London for trans pride! It was so much fun, and gave me something to see beyond sitting among Turner's paintings, as I usually do.
(Annoyingly, I wanted to include The Fighting Temeraire here, but for the first time in my 10 years of going to see it, it's on loan to Newcastle, and so was replaced with another of Turner's paintings.)

I was looking for something completely different on Discord and I found this little moment I'd written out of a scene for the Rocket Killed Gold AU. I apparently wrote this on September 22, 2023; this means that it was conceived before "The Box" aired on YouTube, and has since been retconned. An early element of the AU was the idea that Mango only helps Orange rescue Chosen on the condition that Chosen remain paused the whole time. Since the AU has since been updated to better reflect the events of "The Box," much of this scene is no longer possible within the AU. But I still like the interaction here so I may as well share it.
Note: despite the name of the AU, in this excerpt I refer to Mango's child by the name Apricot. This excerpt also uses @skala's headcanon of Apricot having been adopted by Mango, after Apricot had been victimized by Dark's and Chosen's destruction whereas Mango had not; a headcanon which I may not be using in the updated AU.
--
“Oh,” the kid scowled. “That guy.”
Mango frowned. “You know of The Dark Lord but not The Chosen One?”
It wasn’t unexpected, for a stick to know of neither. Sticks who’d dwelt in the interspace, that realm of the web beyond user access, tended to be more familiar with them than any city-stick of the outernet. Mango doubted that he himself would’ve ever heard of them, if it hadn’t been for the influx of refugees. If it hadn’t been for Apricot.
But the kid wasn’t an outernet stick.
He didn’t live on the web, either, and he hadn’t been born in a game. But he lived on a computer. A computer with a user who, by all accounts, had access to such spaces, even if the user couldn’t traverse them the way a stick could. A user who, judging by the Minecraft footage and Purple’s stories, hadn’t restricted the sticks’ access to such spaces either.
One of the common threads connecting all the stories, as Mango learned what had happened to his new ward, was that The Chosen One and The Dark Lord seemed to prefer targeting sites that were frequented by users. Spaces where animations and users mingled.
No…it was simply spaces that saw a lot of user traffic; it didn’t seem to make a difference, whether animations were caught in their rampages.
Another common thread had been that they never wreaked their havoc alone. Granted, they might be separated by physical distance, but if you saw one of them then you could be certain the other was nearby.
So it was strange that the kid wouldn’t know about them, but even stranger that he’d know of only one and not the other.
. . .
He remembered his confusion, when the wanted posters had been printed.
Most civilians wouldn’t know better, but Mango had more information about The Chosen One than most civilians, and that was before he’d taken a job at a lab run by a stick who clearly hailed from beyond the IP-barrier and liaised with other alien sticks. So he’d asked why only one of the dreaded duo was wanted. Bating The Dark Lord with a captured comrade hadn’t seemed wise, but it was the only reason he could come up with.
He’d been informed that The Dark Lord was not a concern.
Which, frankly, was ridiculous, and everyone working here should know better. But his superiors had turned a deaf ear to any further inquiries on his part.
. . .
If you saw one of them, you could be certain the other was nearby.
Except…the refugees had stopped coming. Rumors had gone quiet.
And The Chosen One had been tracked down to the outernet. He’d been captured in the outernet.
They’d never visited their destruction upon the stick-cities.
. . .
“I actually saw his name, that’s the only reason I know.” The kid was speaking. “If he’s got lore or something, I’m gonna have to disappoint you. Though,” and here his tone changed to something rueful, as he lifted the hem of his shirt up. “I guess you could say I’m familiar.”
Mango stared. “How are you alive?”
The kid let his shirt fall again, adjusting his grip on the paused black stick and letting out a chuckle that sounded more like he was responding to a dialogue cue than actually finding any amusement in the recollection. “I have no idea. I know how that sounds, but I really don’t know. As far as I was aware, I…”
Something in the kid’s eyes went distant. “I thought I had died. Everyone else had already— I, I watched him— “
Mango held up a hand, uncertain what he meant to convey with the gesture, but it seemed to snap the kid out of his daze anyway.
“But then, it was like I just…woke up,” the kid continued. “And he was gone, and everyone was somehow fine.”
“Gone?”
“Yeah. I…didn’t really think about it, at the time, I was just…so glad everyone was back. Was okay. We went home after that.”
“And where was he, during all this?”
The kid glanced at the stick in his arms.

Toronto’s police chief is standing by the decision to appoint an officer cleared after killing two black men and accused in court of beating a third in the 1990s, even as a city councillor is asking questions about the hiring decision.
In answers to questions from CTV News Toronto at an unrelated press conference, Chief Myron Demkiw said Supt. Rick Shank was investigated decades ago by police watchdogs.
He said Shank has been performing “at the highest level” since and deserved a promotion to lead the professional standards unit, which is responsible for liaising with police watchdogs and officer accountability.
“He was exonerated and cleared. And he has been an exemplary police officer serving our public, keeping our city safe,” Demkiw said. [...]

omg you like math? i used to hate that even more than economics🥹 because i'd tear my hair out for finding x and y and for the life of me, i can't solve those kind of questions fast😩 and same! i suck in bio bcs i have trouble remembering complicated things but chemistry is so fun there was one time i remember all things in the periodic table even though i have a short-term memory aha
REALLY?!😭 wait but how, is it the same or different with the nanami memorial that's in the google?? even i'm interested to visit kuantan too if there would be a nanami shrine there!!🥹🥹
that's okaaay! my reply is sooo long too omg and i'm waiting for your reply too!🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Random but do you know why actors pay their lawyers a set percentage of their earnings? I thought lawyers were paid by the hour and this seems to be a strange outlier in the legal industry that very much benefits lawyers but not necessarily actors...i saw sydney sweeney saying she pays her lawyer 5% of all her take home pay.
and why do so many actors, including non A list ones, have business managers? it just seems a bit redundant if youre not Zendaya and another drain on earnings
Oh! Honestly, I didn't know they did. That's interesting, and sounds more like what an agent would do than a lawyer (although agents usually do [and should imo] have legal backgrounds themselves). Entertainment lawyers are generally handling negotiations, contracts and managing taxes for clients, but they can do more than that too like connect clients to each other or to different projects.
My mum's an indie producer, which I've talked about a couple of times on here, and two of her current projects were actually ones that her lawyer (who she's had for about 20 years) linked her to. He was / is the IP lawyer for those projects and when the creatives were looking for a producer, he thought my mum would be a good fit and so rang her to connect them. With those projects now he gets a percentage fee because the deals went ahead (he also linked her to one that didn't go ahead a few years ago, which he took no fee for), but it's only for those two projects and not for the rest of her production slate (he just gets his regular flat fee for those).
If Sydney Sweeny's lawyer's getting 5% of all her take home pay, I'd imagine it's probably a situation like that where they've connected her to either other clients or projects that have been important in moving her career forwards. It's hard to say though, I could be wrong.
As for business managers, I think they're pretty valuable for anyone in the creative industries and I'd lowkey kill for one, haha. Just speaking personally, y'know, I'm an author with one book out and about twenty short stories and a few optioned scripts, and even I've already got a team with an agent and an accountant.
I manage my own schedule though, as well as most of my contracts (my agent only reads high value ones aka book and screenplay contracts; all my short stories, freelance writing, workshop teaching, reading events and festival appearance contracts I manage myself), event negotiations and liaising, and income/outcome spreadsheets before I send them to my accountant. It's a lot of work, even at my low level of doing it, and it'd be way more intense as even a jobbing actor when you add in balancing multiple production schedules (even if they're only doing a couple of episodes of a few different shows - managing that schedule and script changes and fittings can get messy fast!) and partnerships and social media to the mix. I don't fault any of them for having a business manager at all. In some ways they're probably more valuable than a few other roles an actor might have on their team.

Whitechapel series 1 press pack
Steve Pemberton is Edward Buchan
Steve Pemberton was determined not to make his rather eccentric on-screen character Edward Buchan too larger than life for fear he would be unrealistic.
"People like Buchan, who are wilfully eccentric, can be hard to portray on screen," explains Steve.
"His language is very fruity and heightened so, alongside the director, I was really looking for ways of bringing that down and puncturing that. I didn't want him to be dislikeable or overbearing so we worked hard to find his particular journey through the three episodes. I was very conscious that I didn't want him to stand out like a character from a sketch show mixing with these characters from a dark drama. Hopefully we all inhabit the same world in the end.
"There is real progression for this character. He does get close to Chandler, in fact Chandler lets him into the investigation too much and it backfires on him."
In Whitechapel Steve plays a bona fide Ripperologist, an expert in all things Jack the Ripper.
Explains Steve: "This is a word I had never heard before I did this job. Then I realised there is still a thriving industry in Ripper books, tours and memorabilia, so when Buchan sees the location and the timing of the first murder he immediately has an inclination that this could be a copycat killing - it is exactly the day and place where Jack the Ripper's first murder occurred.
"I think Buchan would be a quite a big fish in a small pond within the world of Ripperology. Almost world-renowned. So when he presents himself to the police he really thinks they need him. As the story progresses he actually becomes involved in a real life investigation as opposed to an academic one.
"But we see him crack a bit as he becomes heavily involved. I think if you study something that happened 120 years ago it is very different to suddenly being confronted by the reality of these gruesome murders.
"I think he was fairly cocky when he started liaising with police but when Buchan sees photographs of the victims who have recently been killed he starts to realise that perhaps some of his actions may have contributed to the modern murders."
Steve admits that his knowledge of the multitudinous Ripper theories comes from old movies.
"I'd never read up on the subject but there is a film starring Michael Caine called Inspector Abberline that I used to watch with my friends from The League of Gentlemen. It's one of those films that's so bad it is good. Every ounce of knowledge I have is from fictionalised accounts. Luckily I had on my shelf a pocket guide to Jack the Ripper which someone had given me as I didn't have much time to gen up before I got the role and started filming.
"A lovely touch was being given Buchan's own Ripper book at the end of filming. My picture was on the flyleaf."
One of the most useful pieces of research for Steve was taking part in an organised Ripper tour.
"Our Ripperologist told me it was a very competitive world and as such many friendships are made and lost. There are constant accusations and counter accusations being made about stealing research and so on. He was fascinating but very respectful that this was an investigation of crime and not a sensationalist account. He did just enough storytelling but I think Buchan is far more theatrical; he does love the drama of it."
Steve found filming in the East End at all times of the day and night incredibly atmospheric.
He says: "You have the authentic Victorian architecture, gas lamps and cobbled streets then as you look around you see you are surrounded by these high rise buildings and neon lights. It is a great juxtaposition of then and now.
"When you look down some of these shadowy, damp and dingy alleys, that look as though they haven't changed since Jack the Ripper's day, you can start to understand just how these murders took place outside in the capital city of London. And you start to get a picture of what it must have been like."

How Mortgage Brokers Can Help You Secure a Low Deposit Home Loan
Buying a home in Sydney can be a challenging process, especially when it comes to securing a loan with a low deposit. Many first-time homebuyers struggle to gather the necessary funds for a deposit, which can sometimes be 20% of the property’s value. Fortunately, mortgage brokers Sydney are experts in navigating the complex landscape of home loans Sydney, and they can help you find a low deposit loan that fits your financial situation.
In this blog, we’ll explore how mortgage brokers Sydney can assist you in securing a low deposit loan and why working with the best mortgage brokers in Sydney can save you time, money, and stress during your home-buying journey.
Understanding Low Deposit Loans A low deposit loan typically allows homebuyers to purchase a property with less than the usual 20% deposit. This type of loan is particularly attractive to first-time buyers or those who haven't saved enough for a large deposit but are eager to enter the property market. While the idea of a low deposit may sound simple, the criteria and conditions that come with it can be complex. This is where mortgage brokers Sydney play a crucial role. They guide you through the available loan products and ensure you meet the requirements for lenders offering low deposit options.
Access to Lenders Who Offer Low Deposit Loans One of the key benefits of working with mortgage brokers Sydney is that they have access to a wide variety of lenders, including those that offer low deposit loans. Instead of being limited to one or two options, mortgage brokers can help you explore a range of lenders who are willing to approve your loan with a smaller deposit. This not only broadens your choices but increases the likelihood of securing a loan that works for you. The best mortgage brokers in Sydney often have established relationships with lenders, which can give you an edge when negotiating favorable loan terms. They are familiar with each lender’s requirements, including credit scores, employment history, and income levels, ensuring that you are matched with the lender most likely to approve your loan application.
Tailoring the Loan to Your Specific Needs Every homebuyer has unique financial circumstances, and the best mortgage brokers in Sydney know how to tailor loans to suit individual needs. Whether you’re self-employed, a first-time buyer, or someone with a fluctuating income, mortgage brokers Sydney can find home loans Sydney that align with your situation. They also take into account additional costs that may come with a low deposit loan, such as Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). Mortgage brokers Sydney can advise you on ways to minimize LMI costs and help structure your loan in a way that fits your long-term financial goals.
Navigating the Application Process Applying for a home loan can be daunting, especially when trying to secure a low deposit loan. There are many factors to consider, including your credit score, savings, and overall financial health. Mortgage brokers Sydney simplify this process by guiding you step-by-step, ensuring you meet all the necessary requirements. From gathering your documents to liaising with lenders, mortgage brokers Sydney handle the entire process on your behalf. Their expertise ensures that your loan application is prepared correctly, reducing the chances of delays or rejections.
Negotiating Competitive Interest Rates In addition to finding the right lender, mortgage brokers Sydney can also negotiate competitive interest rates on your behalf. This is particularly important with low deposit loans, as some lenders may charge higher interest rates to offset the perceived risk of a smaller deposit. The best mortgage brokers in Sydney use their knowledge of the lending market to secure favorable rates, saving you money over the life of your loan.
Conclusion Securing a low deposit loan in Sydney’s competitive real estate market can be challenging, but with the help of mortgage brokers Sydney, the process becomes much more manageable. From finding the right lender to negotiating the best interest rates, mortgage brokers play a vital role in helping you achieve your dream of homeownership, even with a small deposit.
For expert assistance in navigating home loans Sydney and securing a low deposit loan, reach out to Efficient Capital today. As one of the best mortgage brokers in Sydney, Efficient Capital can guide you through the entire process, ensuring you get the right loan to fit your needs. GDPR Certification in Bangalore: Building Trust Through Data Protection
In today’s data-driven world, protecting personal data is a non-negotiable requirement for organizations operating globally. For businesses in Bangalore, a city known for its tech prowess and global connections, compliance with international data privacy regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has become essential. GDPR certification demonstrates a commitment to protecting personal data, fostering trust, and opening doors to the European market.
This blog explores the essentials of GDPR, its significance for Bangalore-based businesses, and how organizations can achieve certification effectively.
What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive data protection law enacted by the European Union (EU) to safeguard the privacy of individuals within the EU. It governs how businesses collect, process, store, and use personal data, ensuring transparency and accountability.
GDPR certification in Bangalore- applies not only to EU-based organizations but also to any entity globally that processes the personal data of EU citizens. Non-compliance can result in hefty fines of up to €20 million or 4% of an organization’s global annual revenue, whichever is higher.
While GDPR certification is not mandatory, it helps organizations demonstrate compliance and build trust with stakeholders. Certification is typically achieved through third-party audits and validations, signaling adherence to GDPR’s rigorous standards.
Why is GDPR Certification Relevant in Bangalore?
As India’s technology capital, Bangalore hosts a diverse range of IT companies, startups, and multinational corporations. Many of these businesses provide services to clients in the European Union or handle data of EU citizens, making GDPR compliance crucial. Here’s why GDPR certification matters in Bangalore:
1. Market Access
For companies aiming to expand in the EU, GDPR compliance is a prerequisite. Certification demonstrates that an organization is prepared to meet stringent EU data protection standards, easing client onboarding and partnerships.
2. Competitive Edge
In a crowded market, GDPR certification sets businesses apart by signaling a commitment to privacy and data security, earning client trust.
3. Risk Mitigation
Data breaches and non-compliance can lead to severe financial penalties and reputational damage. Certification reduces these risks by ensuring adherence to best practices.
4. Alignment with Other Laws
Compliance with GDPR registration in Bangalore often overlaps with other international regulations, such as the CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), helping businesses streamline their global compliance efforts.
Steps to Achieve GDPR Certification
Achieving GDPR certification involves a systematic approach to understanding and implementing compliance requirements. Here are the key steps:
1. Understand GDPR Requirements
Begin by understanding GDPR’s principles, including lawfulness, transparency, accountability, data minimization, and the rights of data subjects.
2. Conduct a Gap Analysis
Identify gaps between your current practices and GDPR requirements. This assessment helps in creating a roadmap for compliance.
3. Appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO)
If your organization processes large volumes of sensitive personal data, appoint a DPO to oversee compliance efforts and liaise with regulators.
4. Implement Data Protection Measures
Deploy technical and organizational measures to safeguard personal data. This includes encryption, access controls, and regular vulnerability assessments.
5. Draft Policies and Procedures
Develop clear policies for data processing, consent management, breach reporting, and handling data subject requests.
6. Employee Training
Educate your workforce about GDPR requirements to ensure compliance at all levels of the organization.
7. Engage a Third-Party Certifying Body
Work with a recognized certification body to conduct an audit and validate your compliance.
