OST
Hajin - We all lie
Sky Castle stands as a sharp critique of South Korea's education system and society's relentless obsession with success. The series delves into class disparities, family dynamics, and the societal impact of individual ambitions through the lives of residents in an affluent neighborhood. These residents have built their lives around securing their children's academic achievements and maintaining their social status. However, this relentless pursuit of success often leads to tragic and destructive outcomes.
At the heart of the story is Sky Castle, an exclusive community where only the wealthy reside. From the outside, it appears flawless, but inside, it is a world filled with suppressed anger, fractures, and secrets. The narrative focuses on the family lives of characters such as Han Seo-Jin (Yum Jung-Ah), Lee Soo-Im (Lee Tae-Ran), No Seung-Hye (Yoon Se-Ah), and Jin Jin-Hee (Oh Na-Ra). Each of them is embroiled in the struggle to get their children into prestigious universities, a journey that forces them to question their family bonds and individual identities.
Han Seo-Jin, who outwardly appears to lead a perfect life, employs questionable methods to ensure her daughter Kang Ye-Seo (Kim Hye-Yoon) gains admission to a top university, exposing the dark side of the system. In contrast to Seo-Jin's authoritarian nature, Lee Soo-Im stands out with her sense of justice, challenging the established order of Sky Castle. Jin-Hee provides some lighter, comedic moments as a more superficial and fun-loving character, while No Seung-Hye's story emphasizes the importance of family ties and equality in marriage.
The younger cast delivers equally compelling performances. Kang Ye-Seo (Kim Hye-Yoon) portrays the rebellious daughter, Hwang Woo-Joo (Kang Chan-Hee) embodies the idealistic youth from a free-spirited family, and the mischievous twins Cha Seo-Joon (Kim Dong-Hee) and Cha Ki-Joon (Jo Byeong-Gyu) add depth to the narrative. Their older sister, Cha Se-Ri (Park Yoo-Na), and the enigmatic Kim Hye-Na (Kim Hye-Na) further enrich the story, while Woo Soo-Han (Lee Yoo-Jin) and Kang Ye-Bin (Lee Ji-Won) represent a younger generation caught in the crossfire.
The series evokes a sense of familiarity with other productions that tackle societal critiques within a dramatic framework or explore themes of individual ambition and family dynamics. However, Sky Castle carves out its own unique space with its unflinching critique of the education system and its deeply layered characters. The performances are as compelling as the story itself, particularly Yum Jung-Ah's portrayal of Han Seo-Jin, which leaves viewers with mixed emotions. On one hand, she embodies a mother willing to do anything for her child, but on the other, she reveals the selfish tendencies that come with being part of a flawed system.
The story's harsh and unrelenting nature is one of its most striking features. While some scenes may feel overly dramatic, they do not detract from the series' overall impact. Opinions on the finale may vary, but it effectively brings the story to a satisfying close. Additionally, the director and writing team have emphasized that the series is not just meant for entertainment but also serves as a tool for raising awareness.
Sky Castle is more than just a drama; it is a thought-provoking commentary on modern society. Its critique of the education system and society's fixation on individual success makes it both unforgettable and deeply unsettling. The depth of its characters and the intricacy of its storytelling elevate it to a powerful narrative. For those seeking an epic tale, this is a work that should not be missed.

You should smile. I like to see you smile. I never smiled that much. I just realized you don’t know yourself that well. You’ve always been a gentle guy who likes to smile. You’ve been like this since you were little. You always liked to smile and you were gentle. Even so, how can I smile now? I’m not a crazy man. I haven’t smiled in a long time. It’s nice to smile like this.

Doom at Your Service: he need to hold her hand every day before midnight to recharge her so she won't feel pain from her brain tumor.
Tumblr media
My Demon: he need to hold her wrist to use his power since his tattoo (the source of his power) is now on her wrist. Ergo, if he doesn't hold her wrist, he cannot access his demon power.
Tumblr media
So, these 2 dramas have similar vibes, but different mechanism on how this holding hand/wrist works. And believe me, I ache for BOTH.

Best New Actress (Park Ju-Hyun)

I have finished watching MR SUNSHINE, and there was so much that I loved about this prestige kdrama. The writing of the heroine was SO good in how it discussed and defied some of the worse kdrama-heroine tropes. There was amazingly trenchant and deeply nuanced social criticism, gorgeous cinematography, lots of fascinating history, the warmest and most positive depiction of Christianity I've ever seen in a kdrama, men who drink respect women juice, the beautiful and angsty Gu Dong-Mae, FABULOUS period clothing, and rivals in love learning to put aside their differences in favour of shooting imperialists.
But the show has a major flaw - a flaw that was particularly interesting to me, because it's the precise sort of flaw that I would be most prone to. The screenwriter, who does such brilliant work in so many other ways, is clearly most fascinated by the themes and symbolism she keeps bubbling away in the story's subtext. The problem is that these themes and symbolism - which delightfully clever - are not actually supported by the storytelling, and particularly by the characterisation.
And it's a really fun, rich, resonant bit of symbolism: Ae-Sin is not just a character in the story, she's the living embodiment of Joseon Korea. She's beautiful, desirable, noble, privileged, gradually awakening to a life of hardship and struggle and resistance. Each of the three male leads in the story has a different complicated relationship with her. Eugene has run away from Korea, but returning as an adult cannot help falling in love with the land and the people in defiance of the nobility who mistreated him as a boy. Gu Dong-mae was horribly oppressed by his homeland but cannot help loving it anyway; the Korea which oppressed both men also saved their lives through small acts of kindness. And finally, Hee-Sung, Korea's richest son, is her approved betrothed, but past injustices committed by his family against the people Ae-Sin cares about stand between them. The three men fall in love, not with Ae-Sin, but with their homeland. They express their love for the woman by sacrificing themselves for the homeland; in dedicating themselves to her, they cannot help dedicating themselves to the fight for freedom.
This is why the story had to have a sad ending. None of these men can espouse the whole country; they can only die for her, while Ae-Sin - Korea itself - lives on, alone and victorious, even in exile.
This symbolism is itself delightfully rich, deftly painted, and rewarding to think back upon once you see it. There's only one problem: it doesn't. make. sense.
From the very start of the show, I felt a little impatient with the writing because the relationships between the heroine and her three suitors are so poorly developed. The feelings come out of nowhere. Take Gu Dong-Mae, for instance: he last met this woman when she saved his life as children. Now, it just takes a brush of her dress across his fingers to get him pining madly for her. Hee-Sung, after avoiding her for the best part of a decade, gets one glimpse of Ae-Sin at the washing-line and just like that conceives an undying passion for her. The central relationship, between Ae-Sin and Eugene, doesn't fare much better. The problem is that the story demands each of the male leads to sacrifice himself for Ae-Sin by the end of the show, and I simply couldn't understand why they should. They all have multiple other women pining for them, and Ae-Sin doesn't give two of them the slightest encouragement to hope. I wanted them so badly to find happiness with one of the other women, and they never did.
What MR SUNSHINE needed was not primarily rich and complex symbolism - it was believable characterisation and relationship development. As it was, the lack of substance to the relationships cheapened the grand historical tragedy which was being told. When at the climactic moment the last of the three leads sacrifices himself for the heroine, it felt cheesy and unintentionally funny, rather than tragic.
I loved so much about this story, but the heart of it never clicked for me, and it's a crying shame that with all that budget and talent, it wasn't better written. And that, for me, will be the central tragedy of MR SUNSHINE.

The fight for justice starts with a little invitation...
Tumblr media
...because evil is prevalent and vehement.
Here's a reminder that Season 2 of The Fiery Priest is scheduled to air on Friday, November 8, 2024 in South Korea. The Fiery Priest is the second of Park Jae-Beom's "Justice Trilogy" as it's frequently called (Chief Kim aka Good Manager ; The Fiery Priest; Vincenzo in order of release) and I would love an invitation into screenwriter Park's brain because his creations are so very very good.
On this blog, I frequently talk about movies but dramas, specifically "kdramas," are another delight and from script to director(s) to casting to cinematography and soundtrack, this trilogy holds a special place for me. I think I could write a novel on the themes and scenes in Vincenzo alone. When not only the titular character but the entire cast keeps you watching, you know it's the good stuff. So happy all three shows were twenty episodes and didn't follow the more current trend of shortening the season. The slow character development enabled the viewer to discover individual stories without muddying up the plot too much.
I'm looking forward to watching as soon as Season 2 of The Fiery Priest is available for me to view, and if you haven't seen any of the above shows, I recommend them!
*Pictured above: Kim Nam-Gil as Father Kim (top) and Song Joong-Ki as Vincenzo. Two unconventional "heroes" fighting the good fight.

Hellbound (Season 2)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Hellbound (Season 2, 2024, South Korea)
Director: Yeon Sang Ho
Writer: Yeon Sang Ho & Choi Gyu Seok (based on their own webtoon)
Mini-review:
I feel like I'm one of the few people who loved the first season of Hellbound. It used an original and terrifying concept to showcase a fascinating exploration of themes like religious fanaticism, sectarianism and media manipulation. And this second (and final?) season delivers the goods once again. Yeon Sang Ho continues to be a master director of action scenes, plus the performances he gets from this cast are simply superb. On top of that, the CGI is much better than it was in the first one; I'm glad they made an effort to improve on that. I'm sure many people will stay mad at the show for refusing to give clear answers until the very end, but I think that makes the viewer feel the same chaos as the characters. If this is really the end, I have to say I really enjoyed what this dark fantasy had to offer.
